It might be worthwhile for you (and other people commenting) to take a look past Mr Horst’s results at other published Galaxy watch studies ( of which there are many), which typically involve far more participants. And as regards heart rate accuracy, I also have two chest worn HRM’s and found a much closer agreement between them and my Watch 5, than demonstrated in the video. Galaxy Watch 4 Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) measurement showed a 97-98% correlation with the two reference devices. "Next-generation smart watches to estimate whole-body composition using bioimpedance analysis: accuracy and precision in a diverse, multiethnic sample - The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" Galaxy Watch 5 ranked 2nd out of 11 consumer sleep trackers "Accuracy of 11 Wearable, Nearable, and Airable Consumer Sleep Trackers: Prospective Multicenter Validation Study - PubMed (nih.gov)" Study characterizing the performance of the Galaxy Watch 4 when measuring the estimated SpO2 during sleep. In contrast, during the awake time, AVNN and HR show satisfactory accuracy, and the other HRV parameters have high errors. "A comprehensive accuracy assessment of Samsung smartwatch heart rate and heart rate variability - PMC (nih.gov)"

Great video. Disappointed with the results for the two watches. What I look for in a watch is: 1. Hey Rob, thanks for testing and sharing the results so swiftly! I adore your work just because you are doing a great job keeping it as scientific as it can be! Looking forward seeing your next videos before I purchase the Galaxy Watch 7!
I'm 70 years old and heavily invested in the Samsung ecosystem (Galaxy Watch Ultra, S23 Ultra and Buds 3 Pro). I'm more concerned these days with monitoring my vitals than training for my next biathlon. This is a great video to let me know the accuracy of the Watch Ultra. Well done!
This chart makes me think the galaxy watch is doing too much averaging in software. That would help explain the delay compared to the H10 and the fact that it misses short HR dips. The good news is that can be resolved in software updates. Then again, your correlation charts indicate why they're using so much software averaging. The GPS data is certainly interesting considering the phones share the same hardware so you would think the only difference might be some layout changes. I wouldn't think you would see this much of it difference in GPS performance. This makes me think the 7 is making some GPS compromises in software to improve battery life. It would be pretty unfortunate to find out the 7 derates performance in software just to make the Ultra stand out as the better device.
I know some of these stats seem to be a bit inaccurate, but look at how accurtae they are as a whole. I mean if your like most runners and run 3-5 miles, a few times week, the distance will be within 0.1 miles of your milage ran, pretty great. Same for the HR tracking, most people use HR when doing steady state Zone 2 cardio, trying to stay within a certian area, these watches will achieve that.
I think most people are disappointed with the results compared to other brand watches, Samsung needs to do better, even Google has came closer in accuracy than Samsung.
@@MrSecretwest I agree, I'm also disappointed, but I'm just trying to make a point that even though these are not the most accurate, they are definitely accurate enough for most people, outside of serious athletes. With that being said, I have a hard time paying this much when I can get a Garmin Forerunner 965 or Garmin Venu 3 that is more accurate and has 90% of the smart watch capability, with 1-2 weeks of battery life.
I used all three, Garmin, Apple and Samsung, Samsung isn't even close to the other two for results. Samsung watch told me I only burned 200 calories for a 5k run, the other two had me closer to 500. Forget any type of weightlifting metrics, not even close to having any type of recorded workout. I can understand a small percentage here and there but Galaxy watches are super unreliable especially when you start hitting 10k runs or rucks.
I think most people seem to have forgotten that these watches are not suppose to be as accurate as actual medical devices. If you read the packaging it makes this point very clear.
Thanks for your super review. I'm quite sure the firmware is not mature yet. Till we don't see any update on the software, it is difficult to apprehend the results of new sensors with an unadapted software. So let's see in the future. Regarding body composition, I've a galaxy watch pro 5 that I compare with an inbody scale with their own BIA sensors and the watch consistently over estimate my body fat compared to the 8 electrodes scale (about 2 to 3 points more on the watch). Look forward to seeing more of your tests ! Vielen danke!
Keep in mind that most of the people complaining about the battery, didn't even let the watch learn your usage pattern. I'm using my Watch 7 for about 2 weeks, and clearly noticed that after the initial learning, it got much better. I had a 5 Pro, the battery life is not as good, but the advantages compensate this factor. I'm getting around 2 days battery life, with AOD, sleep monitoring and some exercises. With 10w charging, shower time + dinner time is more than enough for daily usage.
Thanks a lot for this @Rob! It's still sad to see other watches like the Google Pixel Watch 2 and Huawei watches doing much better than the Galaxy watches even with an updated sensor. I hope this changes as the watch adapts to your workouts when the full review comes out or through updates. So far I'm sticking to my watch6 because I'm not convinced of that it's worth the upgrade. Cheers and grateful for your reviews 🙏🏽
Yes, but they are so pretty close with their results so you can call them even. The more interesting thing is that how even old Apple Watch is far better than newest Samsung watches… 😮
Awesome video! Would love to see one about the sleep tracking of different wearable rings if possible 🙏 (Oura, Ultrahuman, Ringconn, Galaxy Ring, ETC.)
Thank you for this comparison. I'm not interested in Samsung watches since they've historically been worse at health tracking than their similarly priced competition, but it's always a relaxing (and an inspiring) experience to see your diligent efforts.
I think you need a larger control group, there's a lot of factors at play that are unique to you and how the sensors interact with you, you would establish a better average using a larger control group across say 3 people at least
I came here to decide whether to upgrade from galaxy 5 pro -> watch 7, but saw how accurate apple watches are. I heard there is a walkaround to use apple watches with android, so, might buy apple watch 9, instead of galaxy 7. Great to see a scientific review from a actual scientist.
@slim1857 they should've honestly putted better sensor in the ultra or they shouldn't have putted the new sensor on the watch 7 to make it more ultra, I'd say they upgrade the watch 7 a bit too much.
@@Shan_Shah this is for industrial purposes, like scale savings. For a new chip this is not unusual. They still could deactivate some functionalities as they do on computers for example. But you are right. The 2 models are close.
@slim1857 the ultra atleast should've gotten the same heart rate sensor as the apple watch, like what is the point of giving up wireless charging for this new sensor considering it's not that much better than it's predecessors.
Oh yes, been waiting for this! The new BioActive sensor didn't seem to improve the results... A disappointment. As for the Ultra being better for GPS, I'm wondering if its larger battery means programming has been tuned to poll more frequently? The body impedance measurement... if true [it's not], 2.9%, you'd have very low testosterone levels, and over time become depressive, probably. I usually take 5 or 10 measurements in a row and calculate an average because they vary somewhat. They seem to be very sensitive to how the fingers are placed on the two button sensors, also tightening the strap, and placing the watch a bit higher up on the arm. When you do gym testing, please consider testing the rep counting, too. I wish Samsung released access to this for external apps. It used to be part of all Wear OS watches in Google Fit, until Samsung entered the scene. Unless there's review data out there, I believe Samsung will rest on their laurels for this particular feature in terms of where they allocate their development resources. Looking forward to the follow up.
Thank you for test. After watching your channel, 5 days ago, I cancelled my Samsung 7 ultra watch preorder. I still have the 5 pro though but thinking to move away from Samsung due to GPS system inaccuracy as well as sleep tracking.
Rob, absolutely amazing analysis. As a fellow Engineer and Bodybuilder I commend you on the work that you consistently do. I've also been consistently using Samsung devices since 2014 and after the abysmal performance metrics you showcased with the Galaxy Watch 6 I almost jumped ship - but I stuck it out....but I'm hanging on a thread and now realizing I may jump off. With that out of the way - what do you recommend from all your previous testing that is the best SMARTWATCH for WEIGHT LIFTING only? Thank you for your time and keep up the ultra informative work you are doing! Godspeed!
If you don't mind being closed off in Apple, then yeah the Apple watch. I use it for weightlifting and honestly, flying, to measure my vitals taking Gs.
Beutiful review as always! This test was the last nail in the coffin. I hoped the GW7 would bring some accuracy, but i'm buying an apple watch, period. ROB FOR PRESIDENT

I can understand a small percentage here and there but Galaxy watches are super unreliable especially when you start hitting 10k runs or rucks.
I think most people seem to have forgotten that these watches are not suppose to be as accurate as actual medical devices. If you read the packaging it makes this point very clear.
first time watching your videos, this definitely has helped weigh in to my decision on purchasing.
Im so happy i found this channel, very informative! Can't wait for the galaxy ring test!
In regards to FTP, according to DC Rainmaker, it has to be started on the phone and not on the watch.
Thanks for letting me know . Was going to ask Ray😊
Thanks for you extensive and honest review!
Thanks, I always refer to your videos for the new smartwatches , rock on!
Dang a galaxy watch review before a scanwatch 2 review. RIP. But solid review, was considering these as well, but the battery is what pulls me away
Wow! Amazing video with lots of data - I love it!
Gonna link to this video in my review of the Galaxy Watch Ultra!
Brilliant video, so informative and love the extensive data points :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
What kills me is the first HR chart. The top 5 being Apple Watch (AW)SE2022>AW9>AW6>AW7 THEN the Ultras?…
Yes, but they are so pretty close with their results so you can call them even. The more interesting thing is that how even old Apple Watch is far better than newest Samsung watches… 😮
Because of the shape and bulk, also there is huawei watch gt3 pro in between they make really accurate watches with insane battery life
@@keepsoulfree Yes!
Awesome video! Would love to see one about the sleep tracking of different wearable rings if possible 🙏 (Oura, Ultrahuman, Ringconn, Galaxy Ring, ETC.)
Based on the test of this video, I have just cancelled my pre-order and saved a sum of money.Tks!
Wait your review for so long...many bs review in YT, .i only trust your review. Thank you and keep the good work👍👍
Thank you for this comparison. I'm not interested in Samsung watches since they've historically been worse at health tracking than their similarly priced competition, but it's always a relaxing (and an inspiring) experience to see your diligent efforts.
Everyone is waiting for the galaxy ring review!! :D
Great review would love to see the results/comparison of previous galaxy watches.
I ve been waiting for this video for soooo lonng ❤
Great job man! Thanks for such a great content!
You're the best!! Im definitely going to buy this one and give my pw2 away. Have a good one sir!
I think you need a larger control group, there's a lot of factors at play that are unique to you and how the sensors interact with you, you would establish a better average using a larger control group across say 3 people at least
I'm greatly looking forward to the full review. Do you have any idea when you will post it? I imagine they take a while to make.
Thank you for this video, Rob. You are a gem!
Thank you for all the work you put into these videos!
Thank you for doing these videos! Also, will you being doing the Samsung ring?
Samsung should hire someone from huawei or apple for creating their next heart rate algorithm
Or a medical expert instead
You are true, the main issue seem to be software related. As the hardware sounds terrific on that 7 ultra, results are really under expectations.
Thank you so much. I'm also waiting for the galaxy ring . - from korea
Coming soon! Hopefully I’ll get a contact at Samsung at some point so they send me devices sooner
I have been waiting for this.
Thank you vvvveeery much ❤
I have canceled my pre-order for the ultra watch.
gonna keep my huawei gt3 ❤
Great review and super informative. Hopefully some updates will be incoming to improve some of the tracking
Love your analysis. Always come here when I buy a tech watch. Blessings
Godspeed!
Use any Apple Watch after 6 series and you will be ok with it. Samsung HR measurements are just inaccurate
