    Note that I realize this is not a watch Ultra feature, but a Samsung Health feature. I was able to pair a Garmin cadence and speed sensor 2 to the Samsung health app on the phone and it tracks cadence and speed. Although it does drop out in short intervals (but sill calculates the correct distance and average, guess it's simply ignoring the 0s). For outdoor cycling it would get both speed and cadence, for indoor cycling it only gets cadence (guess Samsung thinks you don't need that since you bike isn't moving) - YMMV.

    Without HR monitor pairing, it's kind of a no-go for many road / trail runners as well. That and the cumbersome GPX sync. Too bad, looked like a good watch! Particularly like the screen, and body construction (sapphire crystal, titanium). It would be great for Garmin to up it's Forerunner materials, it's the only issue I have with my 965.

      There is a 3rd party app called Gear Tracker II, which allows you to connect external sensors directly to the watch. I'm using it with Polar H7 and Stryd running pod and it works pretty good. I get all the necessary metrics.
      It also allows you to sync your workouts to various analytics platforms. Probably the only downside is that you can't preload gpx track as of now, but it might get implemented later. It can show the map though in real time as one of the data screens.
      (side note, I'm not an author of that app, just a regular user.)

    Thank you for a great review. Compare with my findings. GPS fine, battery fine. I had a very off HR on 2 outside bikerides (up to 30 BPM to much and down to 10 BPM to low), but on two other rides it was much better. Main difference was the tightness of the wrist strap. It has to be quite tight. So it corospond with your findings that I door cycling is better. Once again thanks. BTW I am subscribed 😁🥳

      Crazy I had a very similar issue but I found my band was too tight. My HR was 160ish and I was at a VERY casual pace riding with a 5 yr old. I loosened the band a bit and it came down to what seemed to be a normal range. I will admit my band was quite tight and almost uncomfortable.

I am surprised and I don’t know what to do with myself(other then subscribing) I can say your review determines if I upgrade to a Samsung watch or keep this Samsung trash on my wrist. Great video and I know it’s honest because like I said before I do not recall any time where there was anything said positive about a Samsung smart watch. Yes! I did watch this video twice to be sure I heard right! I’ll wait for that update for the power meter and cycling to be fixed before I buy, but it is good to hear they improved.

    Another Samsung Watch without the most basic feature, external hrm support. Apple was smart to Bluetooth hrm pairing. People have been asking for this ability for years. To me, this isn’t a sports watch without that. It’s something that should not be recommended for working out.

      @@AljosaAsanovic Yeah, most people don't want to do a workaround. The idea is to use it natively with Samsung's ecosystem. Yet, you have to use a different app, on a so called "Ultra" watch. Apple added bluetooth HRM support and it works well. The Apple Watch is open to both groups who like to wear a HRM and those who don't. Kudos to Apple for this. I bet the difference in GPS for the 7 vs Ultra is based on how the internal wiring for the radio is set up. If I had to guess, the Galaxy Watch 7 - since it's using the same body as the Galaxy Watch 6 - is likely using the same internal wiring setup the 6 did but with an upgraded dual-band GPS chip. The Galaxy Watch Ultra, on the other hand, is a new design from Samsung. I would bet good money that the square design of the watch allowed them to set the internal radio up in a way that was more accurate.

  • @MrJbee1982
    @MrJbee1982 3 месяца назад +6

    Why do sports watches and Samsung have to be mutually exclusive?? Why not Samsung make watches as accurate as Garmin. Giving Samsung an excuse is not an excuse. It's like telling them it's ok to be average when they shouldn't be. Especially since their phones are anything but average. 🙄

  • @JorgePereiraMiguel
    @JorgePereiraMiguel 3 месяца назад +2

    To be fair as Marco Altini said once in a podcast the scores are supposed to be "boring" and brands just play with it and throw some random things on top of scores that are mostly "useless"
    Unless you get sick or do a "really hard" workout that really throw your HRV and other metrics way down then you can acess it works or not but in my opinion complain it gives you always the same score is not fair :p they can just throw you +10 or -10 just as a gimmick if you feel more satisfied but in the end it is suppose to be boring and quite constant 😅

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  3 месяца назад +4

      Ultimately, a score is no different than a coach or anyone's own methodology for deciding whether to train or not. It's simply one companies thoughts on which factors are important in certain weighting (e.g. sleep, vs training load, vs consistency, etc...). I wouldn't call them useless at all, in the same way that a given coach isn't useless just because they have a different methodology than a different coach.

    • @JorgePereiraMiguel
      @JorgePereiraMiguel 3 месяца назад +3

      @@Dcrainmaker totally agree there :)
      i meant in a way that they don't have any context as a coach has :)
      for example if you have a late meal your temperature increases more than usual, HRV also way above specially if it's a carbo load, also on summer i get a "pay attention" from Oura on more hot night because my temperature is high and i might getting in "rest mode"
      That's what i meant as a "energy score" is not really as usefull as "training load" on garmin in my opinion
      I use the HRV and HR itself on raw data to acess that myself since i can take into account my own feeling and RPE there!
      For example in Garmin is quite nice at least for me but also notice since i run and cycle the "cycle sessions" are way lower considered in my load compared with my runs no matter if it's a HIT or not on cycle because the HR is always lower there
      But usually i get a 90-100 sleep score on garmin unless i'm traveling so it's always "boring 95 or 97 or something simillar" and if i was going to acess i would say it don't say much for me there and if i look into readiness is always less than 20 for me as endurance athlete so yeah also don't apply much.
      Oura also always put me in those 80-90 range readiness no matter if i go hard on my HIIT or longer tempo runs, if i sleep well it will always put me on that value so don't really is that usefull to say if i should train or not :P
      I think that scores in a samsung or other smartwatch and not as much a fitness watch as garmin are more usefull for general users without much context than people who want to acess if they should train or not :)
      sry the long text :) and thanks for the reply, you're always my go to on reviews before get my new garmin or upgrade any sport tech ahah

    This is the first Samsung watch that records usable data and is probably accurate enough for most. I won't be sidelining my Epix Pro anytime soon, but this is a good move in the right direction for Samsung. I do hope they add external sensor support, especially since 3rd party apps allow at least an HRM strap (e.g. Adidas Running and a few paid apps)...but they should have added cycling power meter support on the device since that was a big deal during their unpacked. IMO, the point of a watch with LTE is so that i dont have to run/ride with my phone. But now I have to ride with my phone if I want to use this feature.
    I also noticed HRV measurements being much higher than my Oura and Epix Pro. Even my Galaxy Ring records a bit lower, but still higher than the others. I feel it's probably an issue with their algorithm since the trend seems comparable to the others.
    Integration with Strava routes seems like a no-brainer move...so they wont do it unless Apple does it first.

One of the most important features is the ECG monitoring as I occasionally have bouts of AFIB that i would like automatically tracked. At $650, this is a huge price point difference between any of the Fitbit devices. However, none of the phone side functionality of the Fitbit like talk to text or on wrist calls actually works good enough for practical use. Would you reccomend moving to the ultra since I'm also a Samsung phone user, or is there an alternative device that I'm maybe missing? Any help or opinions are appreciated.

    I was really waiting for this review! Just out of curiosity: which country do you live? You seem to do your sports all over Europe! Yet, the running you do is very close to my office. And especially the runs at Zuidas are really pushing the GPS to its limits with all the high buildings.
    I was hoping Samsung would release a dual band GPS watch at some point. By how many meters is it off in the test you did? At times my Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is 40-50 meters off and it stays that way during an entire run, never picks up again. And then for example it is 40 meters off to the east, not matter what direction I run it stays 40 meters off to the east. Really annoying if you use Komoot to guide your runs.
    Can you test the Watch Ultra and the Watch 7 alongside one another a little bit more? It is really weird that there is a difference in GPS right? did you ever get that sorted out?

    Does anyone know how the triathlon mode works on a Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra and what buttons or swipe actions are required to transition through swim-T1-biek-T2-run? I'm completely lost and are actually also struggling to understand the logic of a simple pool training incl. laps and finish of the set.

      No you can't connect to a HR strap, but you can pair a HR strap to the phone. At least I could. But I don't know if it will override the watch. Haven't tried it.

    1) Proud to be part of the 20.1% 2) tired of seeing us being out-of-pocket beta te$ter$ at this point. I like the Samsung ecosystem - back to the Note 1 to my current Fold - but the Garmin crushes it for my needs. Hopefully they catch-up curve will be short and sweet and get this watch where it should be and was advertised to be. Thanks again for your hard work (You're why I bought my Garmin Fenix 7S - and why I haven't pulled the trigger on the Coros Dura yet) and open reviews!

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  3 месяца назад +5

      That’s kinda the long running joke with Samsung. They will constantly release firmware updates the first few months, always saying it’ll fix HR issues. 10 years of doing this, we’ve learned, it never actually does. It takes them a new sensor the next year to see improvements. Either way, will update both watches for my Watch7 review and see if there’s any differences.

    You said you wake up at 0855 and the clock says 0924. Maybe that’s some of the difference between sleep time and actual sleep time (0712)? The rest of the difference being when you went to sleep (the time you went to bed and the time you actually start to sleep)?

    Thanks for this, need to say that my Watch 7 44mm doesn't have this strange errors with GPS, so might be just a case during your tests cause GPS module is the same as the Ultra

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  3 месяца назад +7

      From a GPS standpoint, in 2024, the module is actually one of hte least important components. It's intsead, the antenna design. Most companies use the exact same GPS chipset across the board (literally every enudrance watch company uses the same chipset from Airoha), yet we see dramatically different results. That's because a difference of 1/10th of a millimeter in placement of the antenna (and the bezel components around it), is the difference between great and bad.

    • @zachrhonheimer2787
      @zachrhonheimer2787 3 месяца назад +1

      @@Dcrainmaker this makes sense and having a larger watch like the Ultra should theoretically allow for better antenna placement. Were you using a 40mm or 44mm GW7?

    I had the Ultra for a week and wound up sending it back. Coming from the Garmin Forerunner 965, the battery life was dismal, even after turning off most of the sensors. Charging was slow. And Heart rate accuracy was all over the place on bike rides. Not having the ability to connect external sensors to the watch was also a deal breaker. Sticking with my Garmin.
