I met Dan Kroha at Sam's Jams record store when I was 18 years old. Dan happened to swing in on his scooter. I invited him to come to be in the mod band I was putting together. We jammed for some 3 years. Dan sang. Then Dan left our band to go do The Gories thing with our friends Mick and Peg. I was sad that he left our band but I was/and am happy for them all.
@@74artgrrl hell yeah my friend I was hoping I would hear a reply from you, I wish the same we don't die we multiply was true but a lot of us who have been in the punk rock scene for many years are no longer here anymore it said it's good to see the ones that are though still flying their flag High much love to you sweetheart have a great day
@@DetroitFettyghost happy Friday darlin and I’m so glad to know other badass old school fans of the gories and such are still walking about right along side me. You’re awesome.
Such a Great doc about such a great band. Love their candid approach to the story and how, so many years later, they still rock so much. Gories forever!
Very enjoyable video .Thanks! All three protagonists come across as likeable and good people...and I think that Mick Collins ties with Jon Spencer as the Number One Rock n' Roll talent of the last 35 years...his work with The Dirtbombs is phenomenal!
i’m in my early 30s and still a punk, hardcore kid, metalhead, garage/surf rock riot grrrl at heart. my school only had like 3 punks, a handful of indie and emo kids. we were lucky enough to grow up in the midst of the philly underground scene and the music changed my life. i didn’t feel like a weirdo or reject anymore. music wax everything to me and still is. i love this documentary. y’all look so young! it’s hard to believe you’re closer to my parents age. that was another gift art and the underground music scene gave me as an impressionable young kid. there are no rules for life. we didn’t have to buy into the lie of the american dream or lose our individuality.
Raw power mix of archival tape and fresh interviews of the essential Detroit band. In the 80's as the D devolved to arson and crack, when even the Lindell AC closed, Creem and even Bookies couldn't hang on, the Gories showed how to survive: ruthlessly savage primitive R&B with that industrial power backbeat that has always driven Motor City music. Dawn Engle and Mark Norton (aka Ivan Suvanjief) inspire Mick Collins, Dan Kroha and Peg O'Neil to open up and tell all with lucid candor and nail it on tape. Brilliant must see you-tube.
About 13 years ago, I saw the Dirtbombs at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern. In the audience was Renee Zellweger (who was in town shooting the film Cinderella Man) her then-boyfriend Jack White, and Meg White as well. I drunkenly intorduced myself. They were relatively cool about it, esp. Renee. Meg seemed a little leery of me and my intoxicated approach. Towards the end of the Dirtbombs`(awesome) set, I`m crammed right up front, next to the stage, when I feel somebody behind me, trying to pull me outta the way. Now, I`m just a small guy, but when some hulking goon tries to shunt me aside, I stand my ground. This guy repeatedly tried to move me, and after about the third time, I got pissed and started driving elbows into his side. He got increasingly aggressive at that point, and after a few more thrown elbows, I looked over my shoulder to get a look at the man trying to manhandle me: it`s fucking Jack White trying to brush me aside to get up on stage. Ha ha: I drunkenly apologized for the elbows and let him pass; he proceeded to play a few numbers with Mick and the gang. And that`s my brush with garage rock royalty. Yep, I gave ole Jack about 7 shots to the ribcage. Given his somewhat ornery reputation, I guess I`m lucky he didn`t punch me.
Jack white, hulking goon. Lol. I took my youngest son to see The White Stripes in Mississauga 2003 or '04. It was his first concert. What a wall of sound for a 2 piece.
I got to play with dannys newer band demolition doll rods. Being a huge gories fan it was great what made it even better was they loved our band and told us we could stay with them if we ever went out to detroit
Yeah, it's the rough times that makes it great, most o/t time musicians love to look back at the old days where everything was still uncomplicated and wild..
That French guy probably ruined it (a tiny little bit) for the Gories in Europe because of that weird 'housey' album cover design. House Rockin had a great cover(!) these were the album covers we were looking for when you wanted to buy an album by a band you didn't know yet. The Frenchman didn't have a clue..!
A great uplifting story of a trio of true individuals - just goes to show what originality and a ton of heartfelt sincerity can accomplish in the world
Great doc! I remember this whole time, I met Peg when she worked at Sam's Jams back in the late 80's, she was cool as fuck. Mick worked at Off The Record in Royal Oak and he was cool as fuck, too.
I never thought the Gories were aweful, they give me the chills to this day, I found them at Vynle Solution in Huntington Beach , Ca. DRAC hooked me up with all my favorite music!
Absolutely brilliant doco! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Always saw their name around in the zines I read and the record shops I went to in Australia but for some reason never listened to them. Thanks for helping me rediscover them!
Awesome video. I was in a band called Zulu Brake Torque Society and we used to play those very same get-togethers put on by Rev. Ron at St. Andrew's church. One night Mick came up to me and introduced himself. It was the first occasion that I heard the name "The Gories".
Wow: Rob Tyner playing a two-hour set of songs about Vietnam veterans on an autoharp!?? I don't know if I could sit still for 120 minutes of that, but I'd surely like to hear a half-an-hour or so.
This was the most innovative band that me in my youth grew to believe a cool scene.Unlike today where the point of being is no point and the stupidity of taking bits and pieces of the past that just makes no sense.I really am dissapointed with the shit music of today. This is why i listen to independant underground.

I saw the The Gories once, late 1980s at the Stanley Tavern in Windsor Canada
Wow, they played 'Vera' in Groningen Holland, so close to my home.. Come back!!!
I think I am going to build a city now. That is one energizing story!
I wish you guys would do more of these documentaries. I'm 38 and this shit is inspiring lol.

This is one of my all times favorite documentary, from time to time I watch again!
You don't have to be "superstars" to have GREAT rock 'n' roll stories!

What kind of individual thumbs the gories down? Rock n roll royalty.
It's probably too eccentric for bored sheep..

THE GORIES....Rhaaaaa ...dans les 80's le rock voulait encore dire quelque chose. C'est juste du rock & Roll but i like it. Merci les Gories

Best definition goes for what Alex Chillton said: "What The Cramps did for the rockabilly, you guys are doing for r'n'b"

Crap music. In fact awful. Great story though
