We too have goats, they are primarily for milk and most of the kids are destined for the freezer. 😮💨 We also have a house with a 'tin' roof which would get exceedingly hot in the summer. We have added another skin over the existing, with an air gap of approximately 1 inch. This allows some airflow between the two skins and moderates the temperature in the house.
So I have though of that concept a lot recently. For both this as well as my fuel storage box. I was thinking of layering two or 3 full strips on the western slope and perhaps on the south wall. Or something that casts shade on the south wall now but allow the sun to hit in winter🧐. Stayed tuned you might just see something like this at some point 😀👍

Ahhh, now that’s a sign! We are currently looking at breeders locally and went to the fair to see the 4H exhibits. It’s been a very long continuing conversation of which breed we want. So frustrating but certainly doesn't reflect on you! Good luck staving them off.
Excellent work Joe! Where's the video of you and your daughter working together on the goat projects? Some sweat equity and life long memories with Dad!!! 🙂
Have you thought about closing in one side, and adding a dutch door to the other side? Leaving the bottom of the dutch open while closing the top, and have the other half as a wall would keep them dry during monsoon season while also letting them roam about freely between squalls.
No, I hadn’t as I planned on keeping it open on one side…BUT with that said, I think the Dutch door is a great idea for this little barn. Thank you and if I do it I’ll through the credit to you!
Nice work. Have you considered joining chronic overbuilders anonymous? I like how almost everything you build is likely to last a lifetime. Goats are really cool animals. They are rambunctious though. I was at a pool party not long ago and went in the house to change into my swim trunks and the goats were inside just chomping on the books off the bookshelf. They will eat almost anything.
Oh man that must have been a hilarious sight😂. Yeah I’ve heard they are super tenacious in trying to bust out of stuff… which is why the overbuild. But you might be right on the overbuilders anonymous too…might save me money and time😂
Thank you! As for the birds mouth…. I usually will add them when I want an larger overhang….but on these smaller outbuildings I like to keep it a bit tighter. And keeps me from hanging to add bird blocking in between.
I assume it's important that your daughter takes on most of the responsibility for the goats? Inside the feed structure you mentioned, how about a conveyor that lifts up from a ground level hopper and dumps the hay over the fence? You store it and she can take it from there. The conveyor system could use old bike parts for cranking the belt.
Yep, they are going to be part of her responsibilities. Although I’m sure mom and dad are going to fill in the gaps for a while as well get a hang of this new thing😂. And for the feed/hay thing….I’ve got lots of random ideas for that setup… but I do like the bike/conveyor idea!
Thank you! And I can assure you that Marley can’t wait to show her when we do get them. Hoping to go to the fair in the next couple days to view the show goats and then Marley will have to make that final decision on breed. Marley and I want Nigerian dwarfs but Taryn is pushing for la manchas…. And being that she is the CFO/CEO of monetary things around our house….that is a Lot of pull😂
Hard choice. La Manchas produce milk for a couple years, but Nigerians are so darn cute and have high butterfat. I wonder where the closest buck is for each breed? Are there any local bucks in close proximity to you?
Oh man…. WAY too fast! Wish I could slow it down some as these are just the best years! So much fun and she still thinks dad is cool! I know that won’t last for ever 😭😂
You can see why happened to it in my “oh hail no” video. I did a couple updates since then where I redesigned the roof and reskinned it with new panels. But I haven’t done any more updates as I want to do it when redo the shelving on the inside. Right now it looks just the same as the latest update. Had stuff growing all winter and Did starts in it this winter and spring …. But it’s something I often just forget about doing if I haven’t made anything regarding meaningful changes to its design…. Pertaining to a good update that is.
Really nice goat barn. I was wondering where did you get the solar lights. I have some sheep barns which those would work great for. Your daughter is smart on what she wants in the goat barn. You could use that horse panel for the rail on the loft. I love horse panel for a lot of projects like that. Sheep and goat mouths can't get through it. Tongues are a different story. Keep up the great work.
Yeah, I like the panel profile as well. I saved a bunch of the little cut off pieces that were one or 2 squares wide. And I’m thinking about picking up a couple more for random other projects as they have a nice look. Trellises, gabion baskets, etc And the lights are from tractor supply. Brand is called ‘red shed’. I think they are more of a seasonal in house thing at TS so if you’ve got one local to you they should be stocked up. However, I’d say the one on the outside is pretty dim. But thr inside one works rather well so far.
Great video Joe! Need to know when Joe Depot is opening in Alaska! 🤣 Hey how did you know thatI was going to ask if you made a template for the roof rafters! All the animals you have on your farm are lucky and spoiled! Goats even got their own new lighting along with a future playground! You do tend to make all these projects look so darn easy! Can you struggle a bit in your next video? 🤣 Sorry I got to this video a bit late! I usually don’t let your videos wait! 😁Thank you!
😂yes it is work….but pays off….at some point….I think🤷♂️🤪 Jk…. Any project pays off during, after and long after. We haven’t gotten the goats yet, but I did just have a camp out in the goat barn last night with Marley. And my wife came to oaky some games….so family time as the first pay off😉
you do pretty neat little projects.....it seems like your doing like a hobby farm....you ever think about getting into professional farming.....like pigs, sheep, lamb meat et cetera....god bless
Thank you! But unfortunately our water situation being that rainwater is our primary water source(no well) keeps anything larger from being realistic. But if we ever had to means to acquire property elsewhere then perhaps I would. And may God Bless you too!
Having been a goat owner, just a warning. The goats will love the second level as a play ground. jumping over fence may be an issue but that will depend on the goat. As for the shelves, the goats will love to try and jump up on them also. Smaller bred goats may help alleviate the issues.
So far my daughter and I are leaning towards Nigerian dwarfs….but my wife wants la manchas or mini la manchas. And yeah, I can only imagine they will want to get up on the loft too😂 Should be an interesting adventure thwarting their rambunctiousness and escape proclivities🤞😁
Always love your work. Great job. Are you concerned about the interior light? Is there risk of it hanging too low and goats either chewing it up or hitting it as they leap? Thanks
Thanks, I’ll look up red shed solar lights we don’t have tractor supply in Australia, tell Marley thanks for letting me live vicariously through her with the goats, apparently I need to re-home some dogs before I can get some. (Hubby’s rules)😂
I'm subscribed because of your rainwater harvesting skills. :) I always wondered if you would harvest water from every roof you put up. So my question would be are you going to harvest the rainwater off of the chicken coop and off the goat coop? Perhaps not for personal use, but for plants and animals. Nice project. Daughter would paint the inside? Haha. :) Take care! Bye.
Oh for sure! The chicken coop build has rainwater incorporated. I think it was on part 5 or 6. The thumbnail has the water barrel and stand on it. And yes, I plan to for the goat barn as well. I do it on all of my roofing surfaces..,. Even the shop. But it’s been out of service since I changed the awning setup. So I’ll have to get hat back up and running soon😉👍
Nah! Not on this one Ted😉😂. But maybe on the next one in this goat series. We are currently in a 2 days long ‘discussion’ between my wife, daughter and I on the breed….. and it’s been round and round🤦♂️🤣. Hopefully we will decide on something very soon!
Tractor supply… the brand is called ‘red shed’. I think it’s an in house tractor supply brand. They are seasonal but your local TS should have them. In limited supplies of course so go get ‘em now while they are still available 🏃♀️ 😉
@@homesteadonomics thank you! I did see some similar ones (black, that attached to the wall), and yes, they were gone by the time I made the decision to try them. I'm going to see if they offer them online. Thanks again Joe!
I dabbled with a sketchup a tiny bit about 8 years ago. Older version. But I never took a liking to it. Most often on my projects I will come up with the plan in my head and go from there. Other times I will sketch it out on paper. And sometimes like this one. I’ll have a rough idea of dimensions and just start building and figuring out the next step as I go. For example, the only thing I planned on this project was that it was going to be an 8’x8’ square footprint being that I had put my posts in that orientation. Then I decided I wanted a pitched roof, so I added the tall post in the center. Then came up with the rafter angle based on the height of those after I leveled them out. So I’m a bit she’ll I’m pretty old school about many of these projects. But on functioning ones like my travel trailer I tend to draw them out much more before hand.
Do you mind sharing the dimensions of the shed and the spacing of the fence posts? I think I'm going to use this as the dimensions of my chicken coop. Thanks!
If you can dig a 6” curb ditch around the outside of the building where predators may seek to get in. That is where they will dig to get under. You also might consider a ‘herd dog’ Anatolian that will die fighting for the herd.
Thank you! As for the heat. It is something I’ve been thinking about. We’ve been spending a bit of time out there and I think it is ventilated very well. But the concern is valid for sure. Luckily our 4000’ elevation cools off well at night. But if It does seem to not be comfortable during the day as well. I’ll probably add some panels on the west side of the roof that shade it a bit and have a space to allow for breeze to pass through. Kinda like an insulation for the heat. Stay tuned…as I’m actually planning on that concept for my fuel storage box. And then perhaps for this barn later on😉👍
@@homesteadonomics Cool beans 🤣 I'm down in the West Valley so it gets pretty hot during the day. But for you.. I was thinking shade cloth, in posts, like you did your lights. But I'm an old granny woman so I worry unnecessarily ❤
That looks to be some not account of some sort. Unfortunately it happens occasionally. I’m removing those comments and blocking those accounts right now.
Would've been nice if you had explained step by step how to actually assemble this, ya know, in case other people want to build this too! It's one thing to just sit by and watch, but I want to actually LEARN HOW to do it!
You likely have a bunch of odd shaped pieces of the metal roofing maybe use them as artistic, attached in a shingles like fashion I bet Joe would agree
Yeah, you can see on the far side of the roof I shingled a couple smaller sized pieces. But much of the ones that I cut off of these pieces were the tarred and taped ends…. A pain to scrape off. But I’ve got some smaller cut offs in my junk pile from when we originally built our house that are begging to be used on something…. And perhaps this is it😀👍
Amazon and WISH sell Brackets in the aid of building shed so there is No Measuring and No Cutting of the wood if you don't want. Get enough brackets for like a 8x8 Shed... Cost, Between $36 and $60...
@@homesteadonomics What's cool is, if you order enough of them and space them out just enough, one could build a "Tiny House" using them. That 8x8 could be 12x12 or 12x16 or whatever.. or just 8x16 or the size of my camper of 8x28 ( actual living space ). Then as Money allows, you can add on to it as needed. Adding bedrooms, as needed. Keep in mind, you have to be Outside City Limits and in the Country so No Building Permits needed. Check your own Local Laws on that. Where I live in Florida, I have NO building permits need to build on my property since I am Outside City Limits.

@@homesteadonomics Yay, the fair is done - one more step toward goat arrival day. I'm with Marley, who cares as long as she gets 'em NOW..... but I don't have to help take care of them. 😂 Such exciting stuff!!!!
Saw the bots - they tag me on IG too. So frustrating but certainly doesn't reflect on you! Good luck staving them off.
Nice work!
Thank you Becky!
Nice barn.
Thank you!
But you might be right on the overbuilders anonymous too…might save me money and time😂
it looks good , we like it good job
Thank you!
I really love the goats I just saw on Instagram. 🥰
Hey Joe, I really enjoyed. Would have been a good opportunity to practice making bird’s mouth on the end of rafters!
Thank you! As for the birds mouth…. I usually will add them when I want an larger overhang….but on these smaller outbuildings I like to keep it a bit tighter. And keeps me from hanging to add bird blocking in between.
Another great 👍 👌 project all the best
Samir
Awesome projects everytime!
Thank you Thomas!
Sooo awesome
The older I get the cooler this gets
I just love making these random little things…. Of course my wife thinks I’m trying to build a small town😂
very resourceful, I like it.
Thank you!
Love all of it !!! So cool 😎 awesome job guys
Nice little project, as usual.👍
Thank you!
@@homesteadonomics how's everything with you guys?
Sensacional !!! Parabens amigo
Thank you Leonardo🙏😊
As usual, great job!
Great job, as always Joe! Your videos and projects are very well made. I can tell you put a lot into them! Hannah can't wait to meet the goats! 🐐 👍
9:19 That "Cool guys don't look at explosions" walk 😅😅😅
Good Job
As usual a well thought out & excellently constructed project! Love watching your builds but the goat house chandelier is the best. 😂🤣😂
Thank you Annie! Yeah I was excited to find that light… and one of my wife’s and daughters favorite colors too!
Your little girl, is growing up!
Oh man…. WAY too fast! Wish I could slow it down some as these are just the best years! So much fun and she still thinks dad is cool! I know that won’t last for ever 😭😂
Cool bro! Nice!! DIY projects just make it all easy to do! ....✅✅✅✅
"Joe Depot!" That's a good one!
well built structure 🆗✅
I like it
Awesome!
Thanks Greg!
I have not seen anything about your below ground greenhouse for a while, how’s it going? Did it suffer in the hailstorm too?
You can see why happened to it in my “oh hail no” video. I did a couple updates since then where I redesigned the roof and reskinned it with new panels. But I haven’t done any more updates as I want to do it when redo the shelving on the inside. Right now it looks just the same as the latest update. Had stuff growing all winter and Did starts in it this winter and spring …. But it’s something I often just forget about doing if I haven’t made anything regarding meaningful changes to its design…. Pertaining to a good update that is.
Thks
Really nice goat barn. I was wondering where did you get the solar lights. I have some sheep barns which those would work great for. Your daughter is smart on what she wants in the goat barn. You could use that horse panel for the rail on the loft. I love horse panel for a lot of projects like that. Sheep and goat mouths can't get through it. Tongues are a different story. Keep up the great work.
Yeah, I like the panel profile as well. I saved a bunch of the little cut off pieces that were one or 2 squares wide. And I’m thinking about picking up a couple more for random other projects as they have a nice look. Trellises, gabion baskets, etc
And the lights are from tractor supply. Brand is called ‘red shed’. I think they are more of a seasonal in house thing at TS so if you’ve got one local to you they should be stocked up. However, I’d say the one on the outside is pretty dim. But thr inside one works rather well so far.
I was wondering did you just do a giveaway. Just asking
😁Thank you!
I love it! However, my husband sees work! Lol👍🏼😉💜
😂yes it is work….but pays off….at some point….I think🤷♂️🤪
Jk…. Any project pays off during, after and long after. We haven’t gotten the goats yet, but I did just have a camp out in the goat barn last night with Marley. And my wife came to oaky some games….so family time as the first pay off😉
@@homesteadonomics That’s awesome! 💜💜💜
Obrigado pela dica
you do pretty neat little projects.....it seems like your doing like a hobby farm....you ever think about getting into professional farming.....like pigs, sheep, lamb meat et cetera....god bless
And yeah, I can only imagine they will want to get up on the loft too😂
Should be an interesting adventure thwarting their rambunctiousness and escape proclivities🤞😁
@@homesteadonomics, you have a spammer in your comments!
@@johngeib thank you. I’m going through the comments right now and reporting/blocking and removing
Always love your work. Great job. Are you concerned about the interior light? Is there risk of it hanging too low and goats either chewing it up or hitting it as they leap? Thanks
Thank you so much Eric! At this point I’m not sure if they will or not. But if it becomes a problem then I’ll just adjust it up a bit
@@homesteadonomics very smart!
Nice build Joe, can you link the solar lights you installed coz their super cute, I think I need some for the pooch palace. 👍🏼
Thanks! Yep, I got them at Tractor Supply…. ‘Red shed’ brand solar light😉👍
I always wondered if you would harvest water from every roof you put up.
So my question would be are you going to harvest the rainwater off of the chicken coop and off the goat coop?
Perhaps not for personal use, but for plants and animals.
Nice project. Daughter would paint the inside? Haha. :)
Take care!
Will you be setting up a rainwater catchment system for the goats? I use one for mine.
Yep, absolutely! 😊👍
Hi Joe, Awesome build! How many acres do you have?
Hey Joe, can you share what solar lights you used in the goat barn?
Yep, I got them at Tractor Supply…. ‘Red shed’ brand solar light😉👍
what was the solar panel with an outlet attached? that you used for the inside light. that was nifty
Yep, that is for the interior hanging light.
These goats are gonna be so happy. I kinda figured you would say something like “Nah!” at some point in this video. Maybe next video.
Nah! Not on this one Ted😉😂. But maybe on the next one in this goat series. We are currently in a 2 days long ‘discussion’ between my wife, daughter and I on the breed….. and it’s been round and round🤦♂️🤣. Hopefully we will decide on something very soon!
I have to know where I purchased the solar barn lights... please let me know.
As always, great job!
❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎🐐
Tractor supply… the brand is called ‘red shed’. I think it’s an in house tractor supply brand. They are seasonal but your local TS should have them. In limited supplies of course so go get ‘em now while they are still available 🏃♀️ 😉
@@homesteadonomics thank you!
I did see some similar ones (black, that attached to the wall), and yes, they were gone by the time I made the decision to try them.
I'm going to see if they offer them online.
Thanks again Joe!
Do you have any info you would share on the goat barn lights and solar panel?
Yep, I got them at Tractor Supply…. ‘Red shed’ brand solar light😉👍
WooHoo Imade it, I made it!!! First comment....Just know this video is going to be great!!!!🥳
😂👍Awesome!!!!
Do you use SketchUp or anything like that to plan your projects? They always seem to come out good and seem to have a lot of planning behind them!
You also might consider a ‘herd dog’ Anatolian that will die fighting for the herd.
very nice sir good night ⚘🙏🙏🇮🇳 India Brother
Will you be selling a Custom Ventilated Shirt in a merch store some day?
Haha….I ought to see if that could happen. But the sales would probably be waaaaay low😂
If the 🐐 complain about their housing it will look good in my plate
Well thank you!
Who's your new model?
Good job Joe. But.. Isn't gonna get really TOASTY in there with the metal roofing
And then perhaps for this barn later on😉👍
@@homesteadonomics
Cool beans 🤣
I'm down in the West Valley so it gets pretty hot during the day. But for you.. I was thinking shade cloth, in posts, like you did your lights. But I'm an old granny woman so I worry unnecessarily ❤
What is Congrats...and text thing is? Is that true or a hacking thing or sth like that? Can you give an explanation about this, please?
That looks to be some not account of some sort. Unfortunately it happens occasionally. I’m removing those comments and blocking those accounts right now.
Would've been nice if you had explained step by step how to actually assemble this, ya know, in case other people want to build this too! It's one thing to just sit by and watch, but I want to actually LEARN HOW to do it!
You likely have a bunch of odd shaped pieces of the metal roofing maybe use them as artistic, attached in a shingles like fashion
I bet Joe would agree
Yeah, you can see on the far side of the roof I shingled a couple smaller sized pieces. But much of the ones that I cut off of these pieces were the tarred and taped ends…. A pain to scrape off. But I’ve got some smaller cut offs in my junk pile from when we originally built our house that are begging to be used on something…. And perhaps this is it😀👍
Amazon and WISH sell Brackets in the aid of building shed so there is No Measuring and No Cutting of the wood if you don't want. Get enough brackets for like a 8x8 Shed... Cost, Between $36 and $60...
Very cool!
Your next project should be a windmill to power your solar on cloudy days
Rain water capture to give to the goats. Why goats in Arizona?
That'd be 300,000.00 in California
