- Опубликовано: 4 фев 2025
- Today is Part 2 of the Goat Project, where I'll be building a goat pen. In the video I'll show how I mark out the fence lines, auger the post holes, assemble the fence using scrap steel and adding the utility panels. The next part in this series will be building the goat barn and setting up the watering and feed systems.... as well as some 'playground' equipment for the future goats. Thanks for watching!
-Joe

I have to say I find your videos interesting no matter what you are making, even though they are things I will never build. I just find your workmanship amazing and enjoy watching you make things.
Thank you… I appreciate that Lynne! And I’m happy you are liking the projects and videos🙏😊
13:40 I am so glad you let your daughter do stuff that some might consider risky or dangerous. It allows her to develop confidence and skill. Beautiful job on the fence by the way.
Yeah, it’s tempting to ‘hover’ parent and try to mitigate all risks. But we do think it’s important to let her experiment and take reasonable risks. It’s part of the learning process. Sometimes we will intervene if it’s something that perhaps I think she’s not considering some really obvious risk. But most of the time we let kids be kids. Sometimes success is in order, sometimes failure wins….but she grows with each one😉👍
‘ I don’t think the goats will care’ is my motto too whenever we are building something for them! Love this video!
Yeah they just need something to nibble on and something to play on it seems. Cars, clothes….or whatever is around😂
Very nice fence, good looking gate as well, nice qaulity
Thank you!
WOW... Best looking goat fencing and gate I've seen in my 75yrs.... Thoroughly enjoy your vids - All your projects are so well thought out and constructed - Your daughter will have a ball with the goats, for sure... And, the goats with her as well - I will assume you'll leave the goats horned - what I'm thinking is the fancy work on the gate may turn into a hooking point for the goat's heads/horns when they stand on their hind legs to greet you all.... Thanks again for sharing and always look forward to your next vid....
I wish you did more vids….. you have a very interesting way on how took look at things…….green house, water, shop, all very unique
I wish I did too… but I got a day job too. But the next week and a half there will be two smaller project videos coming. Stay tuned!
As usual Joe! That is a very nice goat pen! If you and the family ever fly to Alaska, please feel free to stop by and build me one! 🤨I can just see the goats in there now! All wearing their Ryobi collars. Goats may be walking the beams like your daughter was but I don't think they will want to leave the pen. It's just too nice! Can't wait to see the enclosure! 😁
Thank you! And believe me…if I ever do make it up that way, I’d love to come for a visit. BUT, one caveat….. I’ve gotta go visit Dick Pronneke’s cabin at Twin Lakes first! Life long dream!
Dick Proenneke is a legend and not just in Alaska! His cabin is literally a pilgrimage for most of us. It is definitely on my list of things to do as well!
@@AloneinRemoteAlaska Yes!!!! Im not really into watch movies or shows but his alone in the wilderness video is literally the most watched video ever for me. I read his diary compilation too. Pretty amazing man and story.
My brother had goats in CA many years ago. There was a stack of old pallets in their pen one particular male decided that was his domain. We would on occasion after having one or more adult beverages go an sit on said stack and see how long we would be allowed to remain there needless to say more often than not I ended up in the dirt...
I really enjoy the effort and care you put into all of your projects. Thank you for your service to the community as a first responder. The world needs many more people like you....
Joe, as always your craftsmanship is beyond compare...top-shelf work in every video. What you have helped me learn is to be patient in the process of the work I'm doing. I've always been too focused on the completed project instead of craftsmanship along the way. Life is a journey in all aspects and I'm trying to slow down and enjoy each step along the way even within my projects and work. Thanks for the unintentional lesson!
Thank you Darin…. But rest assured I’ve been consumed by getting the project done for many years and only recently have tried to slow down and not rush things. That’s why I’ve redone so many projects😂
Excellent work 🇵🇸
Love and respect from Palestine 🇵🇸
Thank you Adam! 🙏
The pen looks incredible...as ALWAYS... METICULOUSLY DONE!!!
Thank you TC!
To me, covering up the cement with dirt looks better than exposed cement. That is a nice-looking fence and gateway. Have good days!
Thank you buddy! I agree. Kinda blends into the surroundings better and just looks cleaner than a ‘hand troweled’ concrete pad😂👍
Another great video presentation, thanks for sharing this. I appreciate your use of safety gear and practices (watering dry grasses is an excellent reminder). Wishing you and your family a blessed week. Stay safe out there. Peace brother
Thank you! And yes…. As a full time firefighter that would be the worst…. Accidentally starting a wildfire😬. So I always try to water things down if there is a potential for sparks and hot stuff.
And you and your family have a blessed week too!
Nice use of that used 1/4" steel... i see chickens and goats loving that pen in the future! 🐐🐓
Thank you Daniel. It’s a bear to work with but I don’t think it’s gonna blow down anytime soon. 😅
Well done! The homestead is coming along nicely.
Thank you!
Good job Joe. It's a great looking fence. A lot of hard work too.
Have fun,
Chris from Missouri
Thank you Chris! A LOT more work than I bargained for too…. Told my wife it would be done in 3 days…. Then a week and a half later I told her is was finally done😂
Nicely done, from Los Angeles. 👍👍
Thank you Alan!
Awesome!! I really like goats. Wished I had them for goat cheese… which I really like!! I am so happy for this and your family! I always used scraps to build something. I wanted to live in the south Tucson area. Thanks for this view!!
I agree….I hadn’t really had much goat cheese before. But one of my coworkers started making bread with goat cheese rolled in before baking and it’s SO good!!!! Can’t wait to try our hand at making some!
Super video as always, good work. Looking forward to the goats, baby goats are a hoot. Thanks.
Great video. All the work is producing outstanding results. Looking forward to the goat shed/barn and since it has a roof then an addition the the water catchment. Thanks for sharing and your daughter seems to enjoy it.
Oh yes….you can be sure there will be a rainwater harvesting component😉👍
Joe, I think you've created the most solidly-built goat pen ever constructed! 🐐I'm looking forward to seeing how you build the little goat barn. ~Margie
Thank you Margie! I’m looking forward to the goat barn too. I like figuring out how to build a structure in a unique kinda way. I’m wanting to have a platform inside and a little mini loft for the goats and or feed/supplies. So it’ll be unique for sure😉👍
It looks really nice! Way nicer than t posts would have been!
Thank you Phillip!
IF you get goats? ha You KNOW your daughter will "win out." ha I really enjoy your presentations!!
Well, my wife wants la manchas… and my daughter and I want Nigerian dwarfs. So theoretically we should win out….but my wife is the CEO/CFO and holding the pocket book weilds quite a bit of power😉
😂 Kidd tested and waiting for Goat approved 👍🏼. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
😂
The goat pen is looking great! Looking forward to the next things to come for this ambitious project! I did say "goat pen" but maybe I should have said "Marley gym-nastics"! Amazing! Love it!
Well you did help with the early stages of the goat barn. So you’ll be invited for the first ‘camp out’ in it😉🏕🔥
@@homesteadonomics 😂👍
This is really looking amazing - so excited to see how the goat shelter turns out.
Marley's quite the gymnast! I haven't been able to do any of that for millenia, er, decades now LOL but still feel the draw of the balance beam seeing her walk that fence top. She'll be pulling "10's" in no time if she chooses to compete. 🥳🏅
The goat footage was fun, thanks for adding that in, and not stressing the mama goats with a confusing move. Seems like they sure did have fun with the girls on their various structures!
Yeah I was thinking it might be too much for the goats to get in the truck and do the whole trip, especially when pregnant…..but then I saw them hopping, jumping and playing… they probably would’ve been totally fine😂
So perhaps I will bring them over when I get the goat barn/shelter done. We don’t plan to have any goats until we have our local county fair in April….. as we are planning to visit with some of the 4H goat folks and see if we can learn just a bit more on the breeds we are considering. And or maybe even purchase a couple of them🤷♂️🤪
@@homesteadonomics Now everyone here will be waiting anxiously to find out how things go at the fair. Better take a camera! 😂🐐
The space looks fantastic and will be perfect for goats, or as another chicken run...haha! Nice of you to make a short term playground for Marley. :)
Oh yeah! Playground AND once I get the goat barn done it’ll serve as a little camp out spot until we get the actual goats!⛺️😊
@@homesteadonomics A camp out spot will be super fun! When it gets a little warmer, maybe Marley can take Aunt Jessica camping.
Great looking project. That gate is so cool.
Thank you!
It's a very nice system. Greetings for your hard work...
Thank you!
Very cool enclosure, thank you for sharing.
Thank you Daniel🙏
i am very impressed by the Ryobi cordless auger.
i have been debating whether to go with DeWalt or some other brands. It seems Ryobi is a worthy consideration.
As always, extremely NICE!
Thank you!
Looks like Marley will like it as much as the goats! Lol, it’s awesome, can’t wait to see YOUR goats in it!
nice job , after 2 years of pause watching youtube. I am happy to see you still uploading videos . Gj from romania :D
I also have my videos available on rumble and odysee as well. In case YT isn’t the best platform for you😉👍
Great looking fence and love the gate too. The sign makes it look classy. FYI there is a product called "Extend" that you can get at auto parts stores that was originally developed for oil pipelines that works great on slightly rusty steel. It comes in a spray. It actually chemically bonds with the rust. It dries in a smooth, paintable surface.
Wow! It looks wonderful. You have good vision for your projects. They turn out so neat and so tasteful. Great job.
Thank you! I’ve got to keep the projects somewhat neat so my wife will be okay with me building them😉
Joe, seeing you cut posts with an angle grinder makes me think you'd really like a portable bandsaw...something to think about anyway. For what you & I do, the HarborFreight Bauer model is a solid tool that will last for many years at an affordable price. I use mine almost daily both in my shop-made table and hand held. It cuts faster and more precisely, and there are no sparks. Pro Tip: Lennox or other brand high quality blades make all the difference in how this saw performs. All the best, Andrew
You know the irony of using the angle grinder with this video. Is that Ryobi did send me one of their portable bandsaws….but I misplaced the accessories bag that had the blade and I’ve just been procrastinating on going to buy another one🤦♂️. So I may just order the one you recommended today….so I can stop it from collecting dust🤪
You is amazing guy. I loved .
Thank you🙏😊
LOVE that GATE!!!
Thank you!
Very very nice job! Love watching!
Thank you Loren!
😂"The little pregnant goats can't visit!" That had me 🤣 rolling!
This project gave me some real nice ideas on how we could built a fence for our dogs, a much shorter fence.
Awesome work Joe, you go above and beyond! 🐐 👨🏻🏭 I am looking forward to the goat barn project.
Thank you Autumn…. I’m excited about the goat barn project too. I think it’ll be a fun little structure to build. And Marley and I will probably do a couple camp outs in it before we get the actual goats. Mom will probably join for the campfire and marshmallows…. Then opt for house to get better sleep😉

Those look like Nigerian Dwarf Goats! I love my pint sized ruminants! We had sheep here that weighed over 200 lbs each and were not cooperative! Little goats are so much easier to handle.
Yes they were. The Nigerian dwarfs are on my daughter and my shirt list… my wife really has a thing for la manchas. So we are trying to figure it out right now😂
Great video as always, Joe! I imagine goat fence is like bear fence for my bees in the mountains. Fortify best you can & put up a game camera to see how they breech it, so you'll know how to improve it. Repeat, repeat, repeat 🙂 Thanks again for all you do to teach all of us! Best, Andrew
Oh man, I don’t think I’d seen your bear fence….but that’s gotta be a chore with an animal that strong and smart too!😬
@@homesteadonomics Nothing but time on their hands, they're highly intelligent and super motivated to figure it out. The key was a fence charger powerful enough to run several miles of cattle fence hooked up to my 160ft of fence. Luckily, I'm outta that racket now with all my bees in the city right behind my shop!
THAT IS A VERY NICE GOAT PEN, GOOD JOB.
sweet setup
Thank you!
I love that gate!!!
Great video, thank you so much for sharing. I always look forward to your videos!
Thank you Rich!
Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Thank you for checking it out Michael🙏
We had goats for three years when we got them to send them to ‘freezer camp’. Their personalities are wonderful and they are very entertaining and they eat sage brush and weeds! But eventually ‘camp’ beckoned and we ended up going that way.
I always enjoy your videos.
Thank you John 🙏
Good lord brother that girl is growing way to fast, great job on the fence and gate
Hog rings are used in automotive upholstery (and probably other stuff too). 😊 That's one very sturdy goat pen!
Yeah they’ve got lots of uses. I’ve seen them mostly with things like fencing, gabion baskets, etc,. But your mention of upholstery makes sense too.
Wow your videos are very informative. We will surely share your channel to our clients to learn more especially those who wants to live in a farm ☺
Fencing in goats was an expensive nightmare for us, so we switched to miniature Shetland Sheep. So, so much easier and they have done a fantastic job of clearing overgrown horse pasture. Loved my goats, but they weren't worth the fortress fencing.
Looks like an excellent job you are doing.
Haha… that seems to be what a LOT of folks experience😂. Perhaps you’re gonna see me doing a ‘sheep series’ of videos in a couple years 🤷♂️🤪
You went all out,
Awesome job man!👍
U r an artist
Thank you!
We raise Boer goats and as far as our experience goes at Lucky M Boer Goats, you keep them fed and they won't have a reason to try to get out. Similarly, if you don't have a fence in between groups where they will fight and bend panels then mid-panel support wouldn't be absolutely necessary. I've gone through a lot of destroyed fence in the last few years and can't wait to upgrade.
Hmmm…. I haven’t even been thinking about separating them🤦♂️. But now that you mention it I may have to do a bit more research on that. Just during breeding times? Separating the boys and girls kinda thing?
….. oh okay I just went and checked my daughters research notes and saw that she had noted that. I guess I need to consult her a bit more on this project 😂
@@homesteadonomics Our dominant does will fight on either side of a fence just because they are separated as if they've never known each other before. We had some of our boer goats actually blow out a 1 5/8" priefert gate from fighting. I've never had a situation where it was breeding related, more on a "just because" basis. If I knew which video of ours it was in I would tag it but I'm not real sure. We have a mostly t-post and cattle panel fence and it has done fine for perimeters of pens.
You always do great work!
From scrap to a great looking goat pen. I was wondering how you were going to stop predators getting in I didn’t think about electric fence that’s a great idea I love your channel thanks so much for sharing
Thank you for checking it out Bradley!
Good idea. Thanks very professional lookin
Muy buen trabajo brother que Dios te guarde
Very good 👍
Always impressed with your work, is that a never ending supply of steel
Once again an example of a well designed and built project. Just one question, why do you want goats? Chickens I understand, even a cow I could understand but goats?
Thank you! As for having the goats. Lots of varying reasons. But a few include…
-homeschool project for my daughter
-milking in the future
-wildfire mitigation
-a daughter who REALLY wants them😉
Drilling in some 3" screws into the wooden posts below the ground line will help the posts hold the cement.
This brought fond memories of my childhood. I was raised on a small farm in my youth . My parents loved having a variety of garm animals. They made the mistake of buy a useless goat as anothe pet for us sibblings to raise, feed , pet ect... i will never forget helping my father lugging hand tools and material around the barn and fenced in area, every other weekend when that damn goat grew mature. My dad would curse 1/2 the time while making repairs on the barn cladding, fencing , wire fencing and just about anything that beaver toothed goat chewed on . You'd be amazed what a goat can chew threw. Best childhood memories .
Im sure you wi bring fond memories to your kids / Daughter when She or they become adults .
Fyi. Nice workmanship. Goats can easily chew through Chicken wire 🙄😆😆Ashame the youth of America doesnt want to learn the trades these days. But on a good note your daughter should try gymnastics, She seems to have natural talent. 🤣
Yeah that seems to be the thing goat owners have in common…the goat antics sometimes making things more difficult😂. It’ll be a fun process for sure.
And my daughter actually started in gymnastics fairly recently and has already gotten her front hand springs down as well as a lot of other things.
As for youth learning trades…I agree. But I fortunately I feel we are entering into a time in the not so distant future where many folks are going to have to learn skills whether they want to or not. I prefer learning them before hand😉👍
Nice work.
Good job
That's the greatest kid.
Nice, man!
Thank you!
Ah...the chicken wire is like tiny rebar :)
It all looks great...really nice job!
Will you be building play areas like the neighbor's have when you get some goats?
Oh yes, you can be sure of it. Tires, see-saw, climbing structures….who knows…. But definitely that’s what my daughter is most excited about building😂
Save the chicken wire, it isn’t nearly enough amount of steel to be helping with cracking at all and is a step that is really only costing you time.
Is that a future gymnast we are watching???
Great job , love it 👍💪🏻👈🏻😂
6:00 ... A BLIND man would be HAPPY to see that!! LOL
😂
Anyone else wishing they too had ground that didn’t have boulders the entire way down and didn’t need 42” deep frost free footings?
I just saw him using that auger and I was thinking "Wow, that would be nice"
This area of my property is really soft… and one other spot. It gets pretty rough in most of the rest of it. Rock, caliche, etc
I’d love to see your take on a more natural inspired goat/dog playground 🙏🏽
Oh I’ve got ideas…tons of them…haha. It’ll likely include everything from old tires and scrap steel to large logs, rocks, etc,. Still being designed in my head though 🤪
@ 5:29 I said Boy.... Where's your trailer at? That needs a nice edging. Then realized how satisfying the "smacking" was.🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

Pen that small you might wanna look into growing sprouted fodder, barley, corn, wheat, sunflower pretty much any seed
But very well built pen. Our lamancha can jump the fence but doesnt if we keep her occupied
We plan to move them around the property from time to time in a little portable fence enclosure that will be a future project. And yes I’ve been reading about some sprouted seeds for both goats and the chickens😀👍
Hi Joe,
The gate looks good for humans, is it wide enough for a wheel barrow or cart? Is it too late to retro fit the fence into a gate big enough for a truck? Possibly the goat barn could be used to pass large bulky items (like bales of hay) into the goat pen. When the goats arrive your going to have such great manure to put on your gardens. Cheers,
Bill
As my friend who has goats says “if the fence will hold water it will hold a goat” 😂
Yes that’s what seems to be the level of security needed😂
Phospho is a blue liquid sold at some Home Depot or a good welding shop store. It claims to freeze rust while simultaneously serving as a primer. It comes in the gallon size so I don't know how much cheaper it is than those spray cans you were using are expensive but I don't know exactly how many cans you had to use for all that metal
So I had not heard of that before. But it sounds really good. As for the cans, yes, they are really pricey for what you get volume wise. But it was more of a convenience thing. I bought two of the rusty metal primer cans and used 3 regular hi performance primer cans. I kinda focused on spots of heavy rust and or chipping paint. So I didn’t cover them completely with primer. In that case I might have needed like 10-12 cans….which would be WAY more than I’d want to spend😬
👍👍응원합니다 👍👍🇰🇷
Thank you
@@homesteadonomics Hello sir, am I one of the winners of the competition?
Will that auger work with a wider auger bit or is it too much?
Hmmm, not sure 🤔
This is an 8” bit and I don’t know if they sell a larger one. It’s got enough torque for sure. But it might rip your arms off if you hit a root with a larger bit😂
@@homesteadonomics I hear that. Just installed a deck on Central in Phoenix. All 9 holes were nothing but roots, rocks, and concrete block.
As usual, great job, and video!
This is quite a coincidence, because I was looking online for augers today.
I also have been collecting Ryobi tools, and saw that they have a battery operated auger.
How do you like the Ryobi auger?
Also, your thoughts on whether it would have enough power to handle rocky (mostly small stones)/sandy soil.
Thanks Joe!
❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎🐐
Being that they sent me the auger I can’t not like it right?!😉. BUT in all honesty I have really been impressed by it a lot. Makes post holes SO much easier. But it will depend on your soil. Sandy with smaller rocks I think this would do great. The ground in this area of my property is pretty nice for the auger. But I also have parts of my property that are decomposed granite and you need a digging bar and pick to make a dent. So it can’t plow through anything, but in those cases no other auger would be able to either. But for most ground types I think this would work extremely well. I absolutely love it!

Helper chickens 🐔😂
They always love dirt work😂
One of the future projects will have to be a goat playground. They love climbing things.
Oh yes! That’s actually what I’m most looking forward to. Definitely a bridge kinda thing… some kinda see-saw, tunnel, climbing kinda wall/ramp….haha…. Who knows😂
Are the goats 4H? Or is there another reason? Great ending 🎶 🎵. :)
Oh lots of reasons. She’s not in 4H officially but it will be part of her larger homeschooling education. And lots of the kids in our rather larger homeschool group also raise animals and also do 4H. So I’m guessing it’ll be a natural Segway into that.
Other than that, we plan to use them for milk when they are of gestation age. As well as for wildfire mitigation.
But the reality is that they will primary be pets😉
@@homesteadonomics wildfire mitigation? you mean you'll let them out of the pen to graze on dry vegetation?
@homesteadonomics you can use them for when you go hiking like the RUclips guy firebox
I guess code for checking on the goats will be let's go to the drive in.
Haha..yep! 😂
У нас про таких мужчин говорят: у него золотые руки.😊
Curious meat goats or milk goats? It is apparently common to "fatten" chickens with goat milk, just A thought.
We plan to milk once they have had kids. I’ve seen some folks selling moms that are already in milk…. But I kinda want to go through the whole process of pregnancy, kids, then milking.
As for meat… I talked with my daughter about those breeds and she was a hard no😂
So dad will just have to continue hunting deer, elk and whatever else I can get a tag for😉
@@homesteadonomics If you decide to do A cycle of Cornish or Bresse you'll apparently have goat milk for finishing them. Just got some Bresse but I intend them for eggs and the 1 rooster I'll get.
My Dad had a saying (MANY)... "Why is there never enough time to do it right the FIRST time... but there's always enough time to do it OVER"!??
That is very true… and I’m guilty of doing many things over lots of times…. Which is why I tend to go overboard now😂
