way back in '95 I told my then-girlfriend I was leaving to hike the AT. I bought my gear, even dropped my fall semester classes before she talked me out of it... ~30 years, three awesome kids, and 25 years into a marriage to that same girlfriend, I've seen 80% of the AT, just as you described: 3-30 day section hikes at a time. Maybe someday when the last kid is independent, I'll get my thru hike on the AT or elsewhere (I intentionally haven't set foot on the AT in Maine for that reason)... but for now section hikes & morning coffee while I live vicariously through thru hiking vloggers like yourself is my preferred "fix". Thank you for taking us along - your vlog was well done & I relate to nearly everything you've said & done in your month-long adventure. Good Luck!

Great writeup, thanks for sharing! I'm glad you got something out of my vlogging that was useful. I learned a lot about myself out there, even if only in 30-days. I'll be out there again, it will just most likely be this Fall. Appreciate the support!

I’m on my third spring of 850 miles each time on the AT, this year I’ll finish my last section, I ve dreamed of doing the whole trail and I’m so lucky I’ve had my dream of a lifetime to look forward to for three consecutive Spring seasons!! No regrets at all! Now you become a LASHER and have more hikes to look forward to!!

I can relate to your story. I've only hiked on the AT for 15 miles or so total. However I've spent a lot of time hiking on the Pinhoti Trail in Alabama. Back in December 2023 I attempted a 127 mile hike from Highpoint Trailhead to Bulls Gap on the Pinhoti Trail. However I only made it 93 miles to Adams Gap. Even though I didn't make it the full distance, in my mind it was successful because I did do 93 miles of it. Success isn't always measured in miles, but in the attempt. And you attempted.

Ditto to the last response. Section hiking is a great alternative. I am slowly closing in on finishing GA-Harper's Ferry after 7 years of taking anywhere from a week to a month to do sections, including a 250 stretch of the PCT in OR-WA in 2017. On the AT I've flip-flopped all up and down the southern half of the trail the last 6 years. There are pro's and con's to this approach, just like there are with a thru hike, but one thing I really like is being able to "cherry-pick" the best times of year to be out on trail and choosing where you want to go. And you've figured out by now that in Southern Appalachia there are endless options to get on or off trail with even more options for hostels, shuttles, food, re-supply, etc., which makes planning logistics relatively simple. You won't get your trail legs, but you'll be able to give them a break by traveling shorter distances. Hike in the spring with the bubble, hike in the summer or fall to see the landscape in different seasons and enjoy less traffic on trail. Enjoy!✌🏻💛😎

Great job, Flash! It was cool watching your adventure while you were out there. I was just out cabin-camping & fishing with my dad for the past couple days. I’ve often thought it would be fun to thru-hike the AT, but the more time I spend camping & hiking, the more I realize I’m a weekend-warrior & a possible section-hiker at best. Maybe someday that’ll change…we’ll see!
Good luck with retirement & be proud of the time you did on the trail!

Well, Flash, sorry I caught you at the ending for the first video. I'll take the time to start at the beginning to see the full deal. I too ended my attempt early. I was fit enough and set up right from the beginning, but I was just so dang lonely and missed my wife and kids so much. I agree with you. See yourself as a winner. You did a ton. You are not what the world says you are. You are who God says you are. Do what you do and do it with joy. If it won't bring you joy, even in small doses, it really ain't worth it. Wishing you the very best. Take a hike, and love someone along the way. 😎

Sometimes you just have to throw yourself out there, and give it a shot. I’m glad I did, because now I know that section hiking the trail is more enjoyable to me. And there’s nothing wrong with that!

My 62 year old Father-in-law, Mossy (trail name "The Old Boy Scout"), set off in Georgia to begin his experience. Approaching Clingmans Dome he slipped on ice and broke his ankle. He made it to CD and spent the night in a porta-potty where he was found by a family who helped him out to medical. After recovery, he finished the hike in a few sections. It seemed to me that, from then on, he viewed life through the lens of "The Trail". We miss you, Mossy. (Which is a perfect trail handle in itself) (p.s. - You'll be back.)

Hey man, don't beat yourself up! Nobody said you *NEEDED* to finish it in one fell swoop - go for the sections! If you know you have one month, you'll have that feeling of seeing your loved ones in just four short weeks! You could do the whole trail in 6 years! As an added bonus, you could pick your month! You won't NEED to start early to ensure you get to Katahdin on time. Something to think about.
That was my plan...My first LASH was planned to be one month, but I needed to bail at Winding Stair Gap as I wrecked my ankle two weeks in. Long story short, I'm recovering from my 4th foot/ankle surgery. I envy anyone who gets to spend a decent amount of time on trail.

You did great! You can pick it up again later in the summer when it's better weather, a section hiker. I'm going to try day hiking sometime, it's been a dream of mine since I was a little kid and heard of the trail. Today is my 71st birthday, I think a thru hike would be very hard for me even though I'm in pretty good shape. Maybe do a week or 10 days each year. I'm glad you are listening to your heart, I wasted 3 1/2 years in nursing school and quit half way thru my sr. year. I knew in the first 6 weeks that it wasn't what I wanted to do but having so many people tell me what a good nurse I'd be and to stick with it, well, I didn't listen to my heart and gained a bunch of debt (now paid off). I should have switched to another major. Always listen to your heart!

You could finish the trail (eventually) going much more slowly, with fewer miles, and less pack weight (if you can trim it). You’re in the exact position an elite hiker like John Z or Jupiter would be in if they do 60 mile days again and again. They can’t do that. But they can bust out 40s. Whatever mileage works for you, and speed, do that, when/if you give it another shot. Start with 9 miles. Slowly build trail legs. Take zeros. What you just experienced was a long shakedown hike. A learning experience for your next hike.

The trail is hard emotionally. I was so excited last year to hike the trail I could not wait to be out there everyday with my husband. Twenty days in I was so homesick I went home, my husband Sprinter continued. I came back on in VA hiked 1/2 of Virginia and had to go home again. I rejoined Sprinter in NJ and hiked to the end of New Hampshire. I was not expecting the mental toll the trail took on me. It is not something many people talk about. All in all I hiked 1100 miles of the trail. I regret everyday that I did not finish but it’s ok. I had a great time and the people I met were amazing. Someday I will section hike the parts I missed. You did great. I know it is a hard decision to make to come off trail but the memories and the lessons learned will stay with you forever. Sincerely, Songbird class 2023 (an almost thu hiker )

One thing that people dont ever really say (but it kind of sounds like you found out) is that Thru hiking is not about having fun. because there are A TON of times that its not fun. its not fun at all. Long distance hiking is hard, and its work. What I have found is that Thru hiking is harder work than actually real life work! no joke. There are quite a few "fun" moments out on trail, but the hike cannot be about having fun because its not fun. Its filled with pain, suffering, thirst, hunger, sleepless nights, and just about any other unpleasantness you can think of. lol. Thru hikes are about commitment and dedication. If a person can maintain that focus, the fun will find them on its own.

That's interesting. Our daughter also said that she "sensed" something, even before I had made the decision to leave trail. Was it something in the vlogs that changed? Must have been, huh?! Thanks for being a supporter of my adventure! It made the effort of vlogging, well worth it.

Well I hope it was the right decision. An AT thru hike is extremely hard and not for everyone. The year I did it less than 1 in 5 completed the trail (and that's self reporting).
It shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what an AT thru hike is if you expected it to be type 1 fun. That does eventually get better as one gets stronger. I hope you'll see some more of the remaining 85% of the AT while section hiking it.
    Thanks for the video

It is a 5300m height۔ from the top of moses pea which you can see the views of the K2 world second highest peak in the world, Nangaparbat, K6 k11 and K 12 views in one frame. best time from May to October. This is a family tracked.its open Zone, one did not need a trekking permit or have to pay Royalty fee to climbed this Mountain tower

I would think financially, logistically, family dynamics, health situation, body condition, etc , few can do a thru hike. 2200 miles, on foot, in all seasons, is beyond me. Section hikes, sure, but making 2200 miles a goal? Few can finish that. Well done and maybe finish later.

Well it looks as though you liked Georgia. A lot of the scenery in this was there. For most, that’s the make or break of a through hiker. You did!!! And that is quite an accomplishment in itself. There is a reason many quit there. Among all the swamps, alligators, snakes and my God the brutal heat. I just wish I were able to enjoy as much as you did.

Thru hiking for some of us just isn’t in the cards anymore. Section hiking the entire trail is still hiking the entire trail. Think about it. You’ve got a heck of a start.

Yep. Homesickness separates the men from the boys. It's definately something to contend with. I recommend that everyone susceptible to this be honest with themselves before they start and make arrangements for a few family meet-ups along the way. I was this many times on the trail.

Just imagine if all the weeds that hitchhiked on peoples clothes were pulled and replaced with herbs, leafy greens and other garden plants that provided nutrition along the way and all towns had trails of mulch for safe pedestrian traffic even along cities and towns where we reside, creation nationwide trails interconntected by others that desire what we as a hiking community create everywhere we go!?
