Ford addresses concerns on f-150 lightning winter range loss: Tips electric truck buyers should know

  • Winter came early this year. And that left a lot of electric truck buyers surprised at just how much the cold weather drains their electric truck batteries.
This led to Ford Motor Company quickly releasing their list of 8 tips that can help keep your battery full longer.
Today we will talk about the winter range loss on the ford f-150 lightning and some tips to consider when purchasing or owning an electric truck.
Ford states that: ""...all-electric vehicles experience energy decreases in cold temperatures due to battery cell chemistry. Temperatures below 40°F (4°C) cause the electrolyte fluid to become sluggish, limiting how much power is available to discharge and how quickly the vehicle’s battery can charge."

I've been and electrician all my life, so I knew the lightning range wouldn't be good in the winter. Here in Illinois we've seen subzero temperatures. Personally I wouldn't have purchased my platinum if the main purpose was to drive long distance. I drive on average 50-60 miles a day, I charge to 80% and my truck is always plugged in if I'm home. Just barely enough room in the garage for the lightning. I'll never have to worry about range regardless of how cold it gets. I'd never recommend a lightning for long distance traveling, not because of its range, but because of the lousy charging infrastructure. From what I've heard, the few chargers that are available for the lightning often don't work. And to make it worse electrify america doesn't post their out of service stations, so you're expecting to charge somewhere but all the chargers are busy or out of service. Usually the latter, but wait until the end of next year when there are more than twice as many lightnings on the road. Big trouble trying to get a charge while traveling. And if you're towing even worse, range will drop therefore a need to charge more often, but very few drive through charging stations, so you get to unhitch your trailer to charge or block everyone else from charging.

Ford needs to be a little more forthcoming about three Lightning issues:
    1) don’t expect to tow long distances, especially in winter.
    2) don’t expect to drive a Lightning in winter, in the ways you might an ICE truck.
    3) you really need to be able to garage your truck, and have enough power on your panel to charge it fully, overnight. Otherwise, EV ownership is bound to be a frustration and a disappointment.

I've seen some reports under 100 miles range on the long range model but no one using it close to this. Preconditioning makes sense, it's just an annoying inconvenience for the cost. The recharge time varies so much per charge station, and that station can vary. Ya'll go ahead and hype these things, but let's stop subsidizing them and the power stations.
