  • In this original pilot for Emeril Lagasse's 2001 sitcom, Emeril struggles to juggle his professional and family life.
After a disastrous preview for the press, this pilot was scrapped and reworked as the episode "Whose Life is it, Anyway?" Some of the dialogue is the same, but Robin Riker (Norah Lagasse) was replaced, two new characters were added, Emeril's family faded into the background, and Lisa Ann Walter dyed her then-red hair back to her usual blonde.
Disclaimer: I do not claim ownership of this video. It's come to my attention that this short-lived series is extraordinarily rare (even amongst TV collectors) so I have shared it on You Tube as a courtesy to fans.

Thank you so much for uploading this. As painful as this show is to watch, it was really awesome of you to unearth it. On behalf of the Lost Media Wiki we thank you. It's interesting to finally see what the fuss was all about.

Considering some of the other crap on TV at the time ("According to Jim" and "What About Joan?" instantly jump to mind), I don't think it's anywhere near as painful as it's been made out to be. Walter and Shepherd have some genuinely funny moments throughout the series and Emeril got more at ease as the show progressed (though clearly no one had the nerve to correct his continuous mispronunciation of "exclamation" in this episode!). I think the big problem is that they came up with a concept and rushed it into production without nurturing it first, trying to immediately cash in on his success on the Food Network (though personally, I'd never even heard of him when NBC first announced the series). If it had lasted, the show probably would've improved by leaps and bounds by the end of the season as the cast/crew found a comfy groove. Regardless of my opinion, it was my pleasure to make a totally obscure show a little less so.

I think this show is actually pretty decent, i'd sure as shit rather watch this over say dreck like Secret Diary of Desmond Pfieffer(or however the fuck you spell his last name, too lazy to look it up right now).

      @jadedheartsz 2 года назад

@@VinnieRattolle I actually quite liked both of those shows, for me neither of them even come close to touching the sheer awfulness of Cavemen or Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer.
I agree that Emeril should've been given more of a chance.

I had given up on trying to find this years ago. I thought it had been scrubbed from human history. As a Felicia Day fan, this has sort of been my holy grail ... then to see her in both the original and the reworked pilot was pretty amazing. Thank you, sir.

I remember people making fun of this show at the time (Conan did a lot of jokes about it). Maybe I just had very low expectations, but it's not horrible, at least by 2000s sitcom standards. The show within a show, meta celebrity thing was actually a bit ahead of its time.

    • @jadedheartsz

I think part of that was people were just sick of Emeril and took it out on this show.
I'm seeing something similar with the Nick show That Girl Lay Lay which stars a popular young music artist, it got mass-downvoted on IMDB(which i'm sure had NOTHING at all to do with the lead being a young black girl which is a first for Nick)but I feel like that had less to do with the quality of the show and more adults just being annoyed at a thing being popular they don't understand.

It was drab BUT this was a pilot. It was interesting it had morality and current topics of society etc. The ending topped it off for this episode imo.
He played on how he acted in the original cooking show is how i see it.
This wasn't that bad and for 2001 this was TV Sitcom America.
It was also the end of the era 2002 for these kinds of shows. So no surprise it wasn't picked up for a full season.

Gee, I can't imagine why Linda Bloodworth-Thomason stopped having a career. Must have been Les Moonves withholding all this "talent" from the world.
In actually sad news, Robert Urich's career ended on this.

@@chatsite I was wrong, but that's not why. She wasn't in MST3K until long after she was in this show. Maybe I worded it poorly, but I was referring to what she appeared on first, not the first thing that ever came into existence which later featured her on it.
However,as I said, I was wrong. She appeared in other stuff before this, but it's really obscure and hard to find, so I didn't know about it when I posted that comment.
