Shoutout to all the beginners wanting to learn this song. As an intermediate self taught guitar player(6+ years) I just want to say to keep going. It gets easier with time. Takes practice. There was something in you that called to learn the guitar and judging by your song choice it says a lot. Don’t stop playing. It gets better.
fazeel ashraf I absolutely agree. I think the key to AIC was Jerry’s haunting guitars, with Laynes vocals. With one missing, they would never have made it. You can literally feel Laynes pain in so many of his lyrics. Like he knew he wasn’t long for this world. He was slowly killing himself, and singing about it at the same time. To pull off the musical switch that they did between Dirt, then Jar of Flies, most bands would have committed suicide. But AIC made the swap without a hitch. Both are amazing works!!
Its not a like a pain that he can’t feel it’s like a sorrow he doesn’t know how to escape from . His burrowed resentment towards the void thats clings to his emotions is what detached his persona towards a lot of the other voids in other songs . Respect
I'm an advanced guitarist (35 years) and I've got a very well developed ear. Every now and then I hit a wall. This one surprised me because, to me, it sounds deceptively simple. For whatever reason I just couldn't nail it. Thanks for including this 'cause I was planning on performing this so you saved my metaphorical ass. Excellent teacher. I hope you continue. Thanks again.
@@lasersauceretroarchives6544 Yes it does and it's always a good thing to be reminded now and then that simple doesn't neccesariy mean easy. So thanks, I forgot I had even left this comment.

I'm 43. I started playing 9 months ago. I'm learning this solo. Thank you so much for the time and energy you've put into your lesson. You made it easy to follow. I'm learning so much. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart. Thank you so much.
Was having a hard time with this song until i stumbled upon this video. Learned the whole song in about 3 days watching this, so thank you. And this is coming from a beginner.
I was cleaning up a couple of months ago and went through all of my cd's and found Jar of Flies. I put it on and man it brought back memories, things I had forgotten. This is one of the most heartfelt songs that I have ever heard and I can completely relate to what Lane was saying in the song.
Hes so patient to break it down so far into such tiny bits for us- truly amazing feat of patience for someone who plays like he does- to bring us along like that!
Been going through some stuff, pulled out AiC, always a comfort. My daughter has a gutair never uses. Guess it's time for dad to start playing again after 20 plus years. You are an amazing teacher. Definitely going to check out your other stuff. Thank you for this.
It’s funny cuz I’m in your shoes a year later. Bought my daughter a guitar, she doesn’t play it so I took it up and am teaching myself. Found this tutorial cuz I really want to learn this song. Hope you’re still playing
Watching this song, trying to learn it. Crying while practicing and watching your video(s) 😭(life struggles). The teachings you present are 🧡 remarkable. Super grateful for your content
This is about the 6th video I've watched to learn this song and by far the best .... playing this at my brothers funeral and he used to play and sing this amazingly... gave everyone goosebumps
lil late, hope you're doing good. lost my dad 7-8 months ago on april 1st, this was one of the songs he played on the acoustic, recently just got his acoustic back from someone who had it, played it to my mom because he'd play it to her and she teared up.
Great tutorial!!!! My only drawback is that Jerry Cantrell doesn't use a 12 string on the video and the cool ringtone is because when he does the G to Dm to C9 progression he strums upwards on those three chords not down... I have been playing for about 40 years and you sir are a true inspiration for those of us who play by ear... I was a half note off until I watched your video and you shed light on the solos...thanks Carl and keep up the great work.
Thanks man! Years later and you're vids are still doing God's work. Just finished the second video and nailed the playthrough on the 4th-5th try. Feels good to finally play along with this song after so long.
The way you described how to use your strumming hand on this lesson was brilliant! I have always struggled with the strumming pattern/timing with this song! My playing is coming on massively with your help, many thanks and keep up the good work
❤ So many little jewels in here for any new guitar player or musician in general. The solo will allow you to understand how ghost notes and the the Aeolian and Minor Pentatonic scales can create some incredible phrases. Thanks for this video sir!!
Thanks Carl, you've saved me alot of precious time. Life is short and your videos have allowed me to return to playing without the painstaking "jamming to the song approach I had in my youth. You're in good company, Jimmy Herring was my instructor @ GIT/AIM YEARS ago! I started a family and have basically forgotten my theory, circle of 5ths,etc. So your my link to learn now! I build mt own guitars as I'm still no Rockafella but I'd love to show you some of my work! Just bought my 1st guitar since...Y2K? A Godin Multiac Steel String with synth access. It helps with all these alternate tunings, a floating bridge is a pain in the *** to re-tune!! The Multiac (I owned one B4)Is an AWESOME guitar! Thanks for eBay, Thanks again, YOU ROCK!
awesome to learn the subtle 7ths and add 9 that complete this for me! I was just playing straight d, g, c and e minor...which work to play along with the song, but just not quite right. Thanks for the tutorial!
I'm a beginner and a fast learner, i figured out that my guitar was tuned in a different key and since i didn't have a good tuner, i just lowered it barely and boy, was i surprised at what i was hearing. people, if you are struggling on this song, change your posture; it helps.

I wanna start but don’t know what’s a good starter guitar to get any help. The guitar has always caught my attention by the way Love nutshell by Alice In Chains could have this song on repeat 24/7
Great lesson man. I originally learnt the song this way. I then decided to take guitar lessons after playing for ten years on my own and he has me playing, e minor, g major, d major, c add 9 with the hammer ons, back to d major for the transition back to e minor. It actually give the song a darker feel with the plain e minor chord without the e and the b on the third fret. I just want to play the damn song the right way and everyone has a different take on it. I believe you are correct though. I also have a acoustic magazine with the song tabbed out the way you showed it. Maybe I need a new guitar teacher. Lol. He is teaching me theory though which is cool and he is trying to break all my bad habits. So that's good. Are we positive he actually played it on a 12 string? I have heard mixed things on this as well. Originally when I learned the song I was under the impression it was a 12 string but then I have seen other articles and shit that say otherwise. Need that boost of confidence cause some times playing for hours and still
Not feeling satisfied sucks
I started 21 years ago before RUclips could show you how. I got better and better each year and now I still suck but at least you can tell what it is.

Kinda like "mother" by Pink Floyd. It has a lazy, unconventional rhythm.
