    As someone who recently requeued for the first time in over 10 seasons (used to be low diamond on support) I play with my friends who are gold/silver in OW2 and by far the BIGGEST mistake I see happen, mostly from DPS but also Support players commit this way too often, is taking high risk/low reward poke fights before actual team fights.
    It happens every single game after a fight is lost, that someone who got away or spawned early will peek down main and take poke shots at the enemy team, overstay their welcome, and get totally destroyed because they did not respect the lethality of the opponents. This can be anything, Hanzo logs, Junk mine spam, a Widow shot, Sojourn railgun, Orisa spear + follow up.. there are so many things that can kill you in a split second when you're alone.
    Needless deaths is the by far biggest offender in all ranks below Plat I'd say. Deaths where you gain nothing besides a little poke damage worth a couple percent ult charge at best. You have zero practical chance of actually killing an enemy, all you do is play a suuuper high risk, suuuper low reward game. Basically the polar opposite of what you should be doing.
    If you want to do some poke damage in between team fights, make sure you do it from an off angle, and don't expose yourself to multiple enemies at a time (and don't take these risks if you KNOW the enemy team has a hero with a potential oneshot ability).
    If people did nothing to improve their gameplay, other than stop dying at times where there is literally zero reason to risk your life anyways, 80% of players would start climbing. No joke.
    Fight discipline. The one thing everyone below Plat needs to implement in their game. Nothing is more important than this.

      I'm a solo q tank hard stuck gold and I'm absolutely confused as to how all these gm do videos of bronze to gm vids by one tricking is beyond me.. with that being said I'm just having a hard time now because most dps or supports go in front of me

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir Год назад +4

      @@rez9386 Basically each role (and each hero within each role) will have a main contribution to the team's win condition in every single fight, and the better you understand exactly what your primary value is, the "easier" it will be to climb.
      On top of this, it's important to know how to adapt that primary value to the way your team is playing.
      I can however tell you this basic aspect of the game: You can one-trick literally any hero to Masters. Why? Because what keeps you stuck below Masters is not the hero you play or your team mates, but rather how many mistakes you make and how poorly you punish enemy mistakes. People tend to overrate mechanics and hero mastery and flexing, when in reality what 98% of the playerbase would benefit more from, is realizing their own mistakes and missed opportunities. Core mechanics and hero mastery just gives the base to better exploit these things thats all.
      For example, I see a lot of tank players in mid/lower ranks who don't grasp the concept of denying space, and after won fights they just default to the payload or hang around with their team, or not use that free time to take high grounds etc. TONS of wasted time that could have been spent moving up to key positions to make the enemy advances as hard as possible, make them fight for every inch towards their goal, being proactive, etc. And ofc with this also follows the discipline of knowing when to give up space, but you can't give up space if you never took any to begin with.
      The most classic example is on maps like Control Point, where the team who captures the point will often default to just hang around near the objective and let the regrouped enemy team take literally any angle they want for absolutely free. It's like saying "hey come attack us from the angles that suit you best, we'll sit patiently and wait for you! Whenever you're ready!". It's really not a matter of mechanics or team mates being in front - as long as said team mates aren't running around in the open close to enemy spawn (on hereos that aren't supposed to be there).
      Anyways, I can only throw generic advice here and hope something sticks, to give you actually proper advice I'd have to vod review+coach a game of yours (which you're free to send a replay code if you'd like). Either way, OW is a complex game. Lots of important details that are easy to miss or difficult to learn because the game doesn't naturally teach these things unless you play at a very high level.

    Hello there! So I was GM on every single role in Overwatch 1 (Pushed on 3 different accounts to make sure I have a separate SR for all 3 roles when there were no role queue).
    I haven't played FPS games in about 2 years before OW 2 dropped, took OW 2 seriously and somehow I'm hard stucked in Platinum. Stats-wise I'm most of the time outperforming my team and their team on my role but I still manage to lose. Just yesterday I went 4 win - 17 losses (Went from Plat 2 to Plat 5) although I performed well on most of these games. I got very salty towards the end and only then did I start performing poorly.
    When I first started OW 1 I went from Silver to Master on my main account playing flex naturally and I grinded my way to GM afterwards. When I picked up a smurf for each role, I grinded naturally to GM with no problem at all on each and every one of them. I guess we could argue that I'm washed up now, but I would at least expect to be able to hit Mid-Diamond low master with all this cummulated knowledge especially on roles like Tank or Support which require positioning and game sense mostly more than mechanical skills.
    Never in my whole OW experience did I ever feel like the matchmaking was this unfair until Overwatch 2. Straight up we were playing with 2 friends the other day and we played with a brand new player who was unranked and had 50 wins on Quickplay while we were plat players and he got obliterated and we had to compensate hard for him and lost in the end. I don't understand how this can actually be a thing when we have about 200+ games played already in Comp.
    I never blamed matchmaking in OW 1, the game seemed fair with 20% of the games being almost impossible to win, but now it's really crazy. I actually don't know what to do to grind.

    • @jackzaikos2498
      @jackzaikos2498 Год назад +1

      the influx of new and returning players is probably the cause of this... it should even out over the coming months, but also just because you were gm back when open q was the only form of comp does not mean you still deserve it now. im not saying you deserve plat but the gm's playing back when you played overwatch 1 would undeniably be way worse then current gm's. EVERYONE improves through practice and most people dont see that translate in an increase in rank as the players around them are getting better at the same rate they are, the only way to climb is to improve at a faster rate then everyone else in your rank

    • @jean-sebastien9498
      @jean-sebastien9498 Год назад

      @@jackzaikos2498 I get that, but I'm also performing well above my league in Platinum. I'm not saying I'm in elo hell or I should deserve more, but If by NO MEANS do I feel outplayed by people of this level, maybe the matchmaking is... bad?
      I kept GM on 4 accounts for about 10 seasons before I got finally tired of the game because of the direction it was going. I understand people improve over time but to the point of losing 17 games out of 21 in a single game session while doing very good in platinum???

      Learning when to pull out and regroup when too many teammates die is a solid start. Nothing will make your game worse than if the 5 enemy players are sitting on point and your team runs in one by one to die (because 1v5 is impossible).
      In quickplay you can do whatever you want because its casual. In comp you should work together as a team, even if you dont TALK, just figuring out when to push and when to pull with your team is crucial.
      The main difference between quickplay and comp is the teamwork, so just focus on that.

    • @vkRavenous
      @vkRavenous Год назад +2

      The first 50 in quik play really doesnt count, comp is a completely different game. Honestly i think it should be 25 wins to get to comp, even if it means more people are placed in bronze, they'll have to learn to work together if they want to rank up.
      A good tip is even if your teammates arent using comms just watch out for them, if you see a teammate getting rolled by an enemy, jump in and help.

    • @Yomush
      @Yomush Год назад

      Just jump in when you feel confident in your role. If you are completely new to competitive you'll learn the most from experience. And most importantly don't forget that it's still just a game and have fun. If your teammates are talking shit and saying that you are not good enough just mute them and do your best. If you truly aren't "good enough" then it's probably a good time to reconsider your playstyle

    Having played a lot of Splatoon in the past bit, I'm finding thinking of the roles in this game as analogues of the roles in Splatoon actually pretty enlightening. Obviously there are exceptions to this, but in general:
    - Skirmisher: Start fights, take space, be annoying, be a threat so you can't be ignored, and most importantly - do not die. It's fine if your TTK is low. This is like Tank in OW, and some DPS can accomplish this through just being rats in the enemy team and not dying (Tracer, Sombra, etc.).
    - Crossfire/support: Help hold space your skirmisher has taken, keep track of off-angles and flanks, and use your special (ultimate) to enable team plays, and most importantly - do not die. This is like Support in OW, and again some DPS can also accomplish it due to their kits (S76, Sym, Widow, etc.).
    - Slayer: Not about making plays; their job is to come in at the right time, and from the right angle to clean up any fights/plays started by Skirmishers or Supports before the enemy has time to splat (kill) the Skirm/Sup. This is like most DPS heroes.

      Also usually a good indicator of low heals is 2 things: either the positioning of you relative to your supports is not ideal, or too many people are taking damage at the same time. So a good indicator is that if you often find yourself in need of healing, you should try to expose yourself to less danger. Either play more from off angles so you dont eat 2 tons of rng spam damage every fight, don't expose yourself to more than one enemy LOS at a time, play around healthpacks first, support healing second, etc.
      Also might be the supports are excessively harassed, in which case the job as dps could be to act as their bodyguard (or at least check your supports when you need healing to see if they're preoccupied with something reasonable you can perhaps help them deal with).
      It's a team game after all, and the more each player acts like it, the easier the games become.

I’ve spectated miora’s that hold down right click while their tank is getting blasted and extremely low. Better to have a heal bot than a support that doesn’t heal anything that’s not directly in front of them. Actually even sometimes jumping directly in front of them doesn’t make them heal you. Maybe one shot that heals to to 175 and then they walk away. It’s pretty bad. Not blaming my supports or anything. I know I should be able to make plays with my 200hp only and play around my team effectively in order to get the most value blah blah mills. I can't stress enough how often the correct play to win the team fight when I played as a support was not healbotting but rather using my utility or even in some cases getting a pick on the enemy support that was distracted and out of position. But sometimes healbotting is the correct play. For example when your team is trying to push trough a choke with Widow holding angles I'd rather stay safe healing around the corners and let my tank take the hits than risk getting headshotted by Widow or killed by some stray bullets. You gotta find the balance between getting aggressive and playing carefully because your life is so the most valuable out of all the roles. If your tank is suiciding into a 1v5 don't risk your own life to bail them out. Of course you can try to help them out but the moment you see that it's a lost cause just leave them. Sure you will most likely get flamed for "not healing" but at least you are still alive and can contribute to the fights helping your dps getting picks or saving your 2nd support

It is incredibly hard to kill the enemy's support when the team has 2 defensive tanks since they either have shields that protect their team, or dive on you and win the 1v1. Now if they have 3 tanks, DPS offer nothing. 10/10 best advice for climbing as support (and imo any role in a solo queue environment...) is leaving voice comms and turning off chat. Unless you're in an organized environment, comms/chat are only a distraction or source of negativity. Anything that anybody MIGHT listen to in chat can be communicated efficiently (arguably more so due to markers appearing in the game world) using pings and in-game callouts. This is true for pretty much every team-based game where the primary ranked ladder is solo-oriented.

    • @X1erra

      Yeah, the pings are a better than saying "Enemy 1" on voice comms. And then be the one to command "Fall Back". It has saved my games on occassion. :)

    Biggest mistake in low rank console players is not regrouping or 1v5ing all the time. I can't tell how many times I watched a Lucio going in alone against 5 enemies and dying because he couldn't wait to regroup with the team. It happens in all roles in low rank. People 1v5 all the time

    To be fair to the first point, zarya with Ana is beyond easy to push the back line and grind up the Squishies. Like when I play zarya I often don't even bother messing with the other tank until I've taken out at least one healer and a DPS. Give me an ana and I'm unstoppable

    My advise is take note on witch one of they're healers is actually good at healing (Moria mercy Ana Baptist) kill them then don't worry about the other healer if they pick 2 of those people one of them isint going to be healing as much so just kill the "main healer" then try to focus tank as a group.

    If I do anything other than pocket every non support player on the team then someone will flame me. Tanks will charge into a brawl around a corner and still expect me to heal them. DPS will be a mile away on some flank spamming the "I need healing" message. Then come the inevitable insults about my intelligence after they die trying to solo the enemy team. I imagine a world where support whines and flames DPS about never getting any peel the same way players whine about not getting enough heals. If we win the game then they brag and treat the other team poorly, and if we lose then it is always someone else's fault, usually support. There is so little useful information in voice and chat, and so much bad sportsmanship, that I sometimes just silence everything so I can enjoy the game.

    As a support player I actully hate mercy and hate when people say to play her becuse there are better healers then her tbh Moira does more and does it better. I main Ana becuse her kit can litterly shut down half the enemy team. Not only that her nade BUFFS ALL HEALING FOR A SHORT AMMOUNT OF TIME. So paired with any other healer just throw a nade at the tank and u boosted ur healer ur heals and healed might of even nulled the enemy healing support players win games!!! But can't carry and still need to help with some damage and it's okay to be Moira with 31 kills as long as ur healing reflect that.

      We don't know exactly what increases it, and we never will. Blizzard won't give out that information because then people will game the system too much. There are plenty of stats you can take easy guesses make an impact (like K/D ratio, accuracy, etc.), but we don't know all the specifics.

    As a tank, when is it safe to go in for the squishies? I try to take them out as Winston, and while I can pick them off, my team ends up being solo killed by the enemy tank or a stray DPS. By the time I can get back it's too late to help, but if I stay with my team all the time I can never jump in.

      That's your job as Winston. If your dps can't peel for your supports it's on them. On the other hand, if your dps can't dive with you it's better to peel an enemy attack, get a pick and then jump into the enemy backline. Regardless, in low elo you're gonna get flamed for not protecting, not pushing, not backing, not staying on point or not killing. Just do one of those at a time.

    how do i play mercy without being a heal bot? would that be damage boosting? ik she has a gun but i don’t seem to be able to make it useful, i feel as if he ult would be better used for damage boosting and healing or i won’t get the most out of it.

    • @jackzaikos2498
      @jackzaikos2498 Год назад +2

      in my opinion the only times you use your pistol as mercy is when you have a golden oppurtunity to take out a vulnerable enemy... (e.g. if youre valking and spot a scoped in widow not being contested or the enemy ana is low health and you can finish them off). or if you are isolated and are about to be picked off with no team mates to support you its better to go down fighting

    • @Steph1
      @Steph1 Год назад +1

      In essence you should always use your damage boost unless someone needs healing, not healing as default.
      A bit like Lucio should default to speed boost instead of healboost

    • @stevenseufert2520
      @stevenseufert2520 Год назад +2

      Yep, as Mike above alluded to, you should always be damage boosting by default. Only heal when they need it.
      Unfortunately though, if you're damage boosting most of the time and your teammates aren't hitting anything, then you are doing nothing for your team since your boost only does something when they hit. By the middle of the match when this is the case, you need to swap off to try to get some value for your team.

    Why cant a dps 1v1 a tank and win?

    • @Steph1
      @Steph1 Год назад

      Because that’s not how the game was balanced. It’s possible, but you’d need either better skills or a beneficial hero pick. Eg phara vs a tank with short range. Still, a tank can usually run away before dying.
      But everything is possible, I won a 1v1 on Brig against road hog, kept blocking his hook, stunning him and healing myself. Took ages but my team took the payload across nearly the entire map
