Dps past a certain rank HAVE to understand how get picks in and against certain comps to get anything done.
HARD agree on all of this, Im so passive on dps bc im not used to being the one who needs to actually execute plays as opposed to just poking from the back
Totally agree. I used to be a tank main, and when I started to play more sup and DPS I was basically playing as a tank and getting completely rolled every time xD. But playing the three roles really helps to understand what the others go through. It has helped me to be a better teammate I think, not a better player, but I understand the struggle others can feel so I try to adapt and help. For example, if I see my Rein suffering because of a bastion, I go tracer or sombra to keep him in check so the rein can do his thing.
I think it's because the majority of the supports have a "get out of jail free card" that you don't get with most tanks or DPS. As bastion you can shoot, shoot grenade, and shoot faster. Meanwhile kiri gets cleanse, TP, wallclimb, healing passive and very high value headshots. Having all these tools in your kit that are specifically for your survival that other characters don't get makes it harder to switch roles
I am not great at overwatch, but I do notice that I can get used to observing my team from a specific position within the team, making it so that if my team is playing a little different than I am used to or if I play a position I haven't played in a while I can end up completely losing track of what is going on. Sometimes it still works out somehow, but most of the time I end up having a really bad game.
@@chiefinasmith it's what people tell themselves in order to deal with being outplayed and it's not supported by logic or reality. facts need to be logical and grounded in reality.
This guy is masters on support. And doesn't shoot tanks. As bastion. How is that not boosted to you? You can even tell with his extremely passive playstyle, that he hasn't learned anything about space control, forcing plays, or even positional awareness. And he is masters. If he played genji/tracer with this kind of game sense he'd be even lower.
Majority of my dps que’s I get weak support picks and it negatively impacts us. When I Que support it’s easier to climb cause it’s easy to just know what’s in meta or meshes well with the comp and we end up being the avengers. Low elo overwatch just treats ranked as quick play but with extra sass when the game goes south lol
@@Retr0DuckThat is 110% just your average dps, rank doesnt matter because they all play like sped's. I get that each role has its own unique skill sets BUT I believe you can have a basic core set of skills for Overwatch that translate to each role. Like awareness. Map knowledge. Ult tracking etc. I just find it wild that someone who is good enough to be in masters in one role can’t make it out of gold in the other roles. I would expect a masters level player in one role to be at least decent and not another role. You should be able to get into high plat/diamond if you can hit masters or higher. Or this just proves that rank is dumb and doesn’t actually mean anything in relation to your actual skill level
I have a similar rank gap between dps and the other two roles. In my case my aim is not good and I insist on maining widow because I like playing her. I also let my guard down in low rank because I know on the other roles I could roll through the rank easily. I basically wasn’t trying hard without meaning to. I also mostly play dps for fun and rarely competitively. I had to work hard to get my rank on tank and support so I don’t appreciate the idea that I don’t deserve the rank because I haven’t put time into trying to get good with dps.
what i was thinking. like they have to be a mercy pocket player or something to be hitting masters and then playing like this in gold. it's like they have no understanding on positioning or teamplay. It really baffles me

When you play dps and support they are two separate things, the person in the video still plays like a support mindset but he is still making a few plays which is awesome
Bastion needs to not be out of LOS of supports, needs better positioning and focus on tank... Its pretty obvious what they did wrong (unless youre new). Emonng doesnt have to explain it. Hes covered mechanics/tips like this for years since OW released
@@joester4251 The point of the video is to explain things from a top500 player perspective, just saying "thats on you" is something everyone already knows. And you saying "oh it's obvious he doesnt have to explain" just excuses shitty coaching habits out of what I guess to be fanboyism.
I think the biggest problem is that he's playing bastion when his playstyle doesn't suit bastion at all. Something like tracer would be better. Someone with more mobility.
He doesn't try to set himself up for optimal angles of damage at all. If he played tracer this would be exaggerated. He would just blink in from mid, 1 clip someone(maybe), get recall forced (the person would get rezzed or healed instantly) and be out of the rest of the fight cause he's waiting for blinks to come back or he's dead.
So sad for this master support to be unable to climb higher as dps. He has what you need to be plat or higher but maybe Bastion is not the best pick for his way of playing. As a bastion gold player, if he didn't not stay behind his team focusing the closest target, he may be able to get solo pick but not have the map control by staying with his team. I thinks playing Soldier 76 would be a better pick for him to climb if he want solo plays. I think that his way of blaming his allies depends on this way to play in Master as support, people don't play the same way and he will not be able to advise his 4 other mates to play like masters and win in gold.
As someone who climbed from silver to high plat/diamond this season (actually trying and putting time in helps a lot) emongg is totally right. Bastion has a role to fill, that’s to pump damage out. He absolutely can get kills. But pressure makes kills easier. The hardest thing for me was trying to do too much as well. However, prioritizing my job made it easier to do more with it working. And easier.
Emongg is really sugarcoating it, the bastion died like twice being out in the open doing nothing, and dropped his ult the moment he got it when he could've used it at a better time.
He plays like some people who say “go for the supports. Shoot the supports and we win” Yeah, not the strat. DPS role is very impactful. Knowing *when* to shoot at which target/role is hugely important. Pressure on tank, pressure on enemy dps when needed.
I think part of it is that on zen you just pop a discord on their tank and let your dps do the rest. Meanwhile on dps I didn't consider that I'M the one who has to damage tank this time instead of setting up for it
Watching this i would be so confused as to why this bastion is being kingof peeks They CLEARLY know what theyre doing Like his choice of targeting is something that a Zen or high damage support would do Rather than fucking up the tank Its just that he needs to get out of that mindset when playing dps
I'm not really sure what Emongg means by it. Somtimes I feel like it's the player overextended because they went for a play they didn't need to make. Other times I feel like it's more about cooldown management where they made 3 plays, but they can't get out because they used up all their cooldowns.
I think what Emongg means by that is that instead of seemingly swapping back and forth between two or three things you could be doing, just pick one and stick with that. Just make sure it doesn't become tunnel visioning. I think the right amount is do one thing either until that one thing is too dangerous or you succeed doing the thing.
9:05 you’re definitely just nitpicking 😭Queen was anti and getting chased by a Winston and tracer (and no she did not get that health pack) so as the bastion turns the corner they see a zen and get an elimination now if they’d have backed up immediately after shooting the grenade then JQ wouldn’t have been able to pull them so far out of position, but even still bap using immortality (8:51) on a 103hp bastion is why the immortality wasn’t ready when the bastion just got pulled, but you “understand why” (even tho the bastion already was falling back and that zen no longer had LOS) but then you turn around and blame bastion for not shooting the queen instead of zen even tho YOU can literally see characters through walls and still didn’t see JQ was only in LOS for like literally a second before she threw her knife and they literally only had 2 seconds in turret form anyway🤦🏾I’m not saying you don’t know what you’re talking about but you definitely were just trying to find a reason to complain about the bastion there.
He's pushing cart for a reason. He's not doing much. He is main all the time. No angles of any kind and when he does he gets picks. He's not doing damage. That zen is doing more than he was.
Taking high ground is good but You need healing to keep that high ground. Most range dps do not have self sustaining . Relying on the support is kind of risky in low rank. So i forced to play near my support. Mei is great for low rank 😁. Can't wait for season 9 .
Yeah, mei is great in low rank. Especially if you use her as like a brig, being a bodyguard. I often do that when we're getting dived, I go mei to protect the sups, and it really gives me a lot of value
Doesn't even feel like an mmr reset. everyone of my friends just got put exactly where they were even though we queued together and are a number of ranks apart. and my bronze friends are stuck gaining 6% a win, ranked is still ass
the intro to the vod alone explains why you are still gold on dps. every time a dps starts off blaming others, its always the opposite. change your attitude, you change your game play because you TRULY focus on yourself then
Honestly I don't know how someone could be Masters on one role and that much lower on another. Makes me believe the support role really is a bit boosted lol. I'm a masters support main, and even I don't play DPS hardly but am diamond on the role and could probably push it to masters if I grinded it
a lot of support mains get carried by the insane number of self healing abilities they get (including the passive) so it makes sense they can't play roles without that very well
I hit master support while still being gold dps because I can't carry on dps. I can play dps in a diamond setting just as well as my team, but I can't carry in gold because my mechanical skill and aim is so bad. I made an alt and placed diamond 2 on dps with it, I just can't carry out of gold that easily.
I'm masters support, my DPS was diamond for a good while but I went on a huge loss streak in one session and dropped to gold 😭 haven't touched DPS since
@@Darkstare-vs4en This seems very strange to me. How can you not carry in gold, where people have average aim and gamesense, but perform well against high diamonds who have good aim and a better gamesense
@@engineergaming3830 ? Unless you're playing Mercy with a dps friend who plays something like Pharah or Soj, it still takes skill to climb regardless of the rank or role. There is no magic trick to instantly get carried through a game on support. Baptiste with his 3 health bars fights off a Genji? Great, now those 15 and 25 second abilities are on cooldown and the tank and 2 dps have had 1 support for the entire duration of that 1v1 and are now yelling at you for not healing them.
Pretty sure it's his ego that he is masters which prevents him from progressing on other roles. He does lots of flashy and unnecessary sticky jumps which could have been used to deal damage instead. "Look, I am a flanking Bastion, which jumped with a sticky as one versus four".
If there is one thing I’ve come to realize after 30 years of gaming 20 online is honestly unless your #1 nobody cares about your rank lol and when you stop playing ow one day you’ll even realize what a waste of time all the effort was to be good 👍 just have fun with your friends kids win if you can beyond that fudge it
They just didn't play with the team which I think is strange since they're a support main. It's like a huge part of the support role so it's unclear why they wouldn't do that at all on DPS. If they were a Mercy main I could see them not knowing where to focus damage wise, but as a Zen main I would think they knew to just preassure Junkerqueeen. She's kind of fragile if you don't let her selfheal.
This guy is a masters healer, not a masters support. No "support not healer" player would play like this on a dps. My guy, you have to take off angles and pressure the enemy backline. As bastion, you have the freedom to also shred the tank if they overextend.
I play zen and do focus on damaging with him while doing passive healing. The big difference between support offense and dps is having to actually take space on dps as opposed to just damaging the other team from backline and avoiding death
Considering how flank bastion worked for him but team bastion didn't I would call this a support diff. I would have swapped to soldier after one minute.
Probably trying to do too much because a masters support has to do more than just 'click the tank' lol it's interesting for me though, the different target priorities of a dps, I can see now why supports can keep targets alive because if you're not a one-shot dps hero just peppering a few targets doesnt do anything, you really gotta commit and pay attention to whatever everyone else is shooting.
Nahhh i refuse to believe that people below plat exist, yesterday i created a new account to play with a friend and lost 9/10 ranked games on purpose (the placements) and got placed into Plat 4, not even 5

I don’t think he’s gold per se… But neither was this lobby, I mean look at the positioning they’re taking. My guess is OW put you in gold rank with a more plat MMR.
and now, maybe i am more gifter in aim part but still, that is why most of my games seems imposible to win. i go against ,, smurfing'' accounts all the time. So my road from platinum to bronze is still posible
The rank reset was so bad. Last season I was around gold 2 in all roles. This season I won 9/10 placements in every role and placed silver in all of them. How does that make sense, what else could I have done

This season sucks I was high masters in last season on healer and diamond in dps and not only does the game place me at the same rank for the two of them but despite me clearly being leagues better as a healer than a dps it is WAY easier to climb as a dps and it kinda feels undeserved whil climbing as healer got a lot LOT harder and it was already harder than climbing on dps, unless you're zenyatta (a dps disguised as a support) you're having a harder time with everything
New patch will change that. We’re going to see a lot of “masters” supports complaining about dropping into gold or lower because for the last 8 seasons supports were able to ignore half the fundamentals of the game
This is the most support-brained gameplay I've ever seen. Support rewards players who do nothing and only react to what goes on around them. This guy spent 2 full minutes standing still in the backline using bastion primary fire at walls. This is how lifeweaver for example plays every single game and it has taught support players that they don't have to do anything to win games. When you hear people claim that support players are boosted this is what they are talking about.
This just shows how lost a player can look yet managed to climb to Masters on support... The support role is just too OP that even gold/silver standard players can queue it to masters on ladder.
How is this proof support is op? This is just more proof that you can healbot your way into GM, which you can totally legit do. People who cry about supports being op don't care that they are the only reason big tank/dps plays can even exist

HARD agree on all of this, Im so passive on dps bc im not used to being the one who needs to actually execute plays as opposed to just poking from the back
Spilo has a video that explains it and why support players tend to be worse on other roles.
As a gm2 support and a gold dps. I agree with this 100%
Totally agree.
I don’t feel so bad being a bronze dps as a gold support anymore lol

This guy is masters on support. And doesn't shoot tanks. As bastion. How is that not boosted to you? You can even tell with his extremely passive playstyle, that he hasn't learned anything about space control, forcing plays, or even positional awareness. And he is masters. If he played genji/tracer with this kind of game sense he'd be even lower.
Majority of my dps que’s I get weak support picks and it negatively impacts us. When I Que support it’s easier to climb cause it’s easy to just know what’s in meta or meshes well with the comp and we end up being the avengers. @@Retr0DuckThat is 110% just your average dps, rank doesnt matter because they all play like sped's. They're playing extremely passively, oftentimes behind the *gold* supports, and it took forever for them to realise they can flank or go highground.
It really baffles me
Rank simply is your skill relative to the general population based primarily on wins and losses.

When you play dps and support they are two separate things, the person in the video still plays like a support mindset but he is still making a few plays which is awesome
Could you explain what they do wrong instead of saying "that's on you" ?

Looks like the sombra came pretty close to saving the match during that last fight.
Aint no way zombiefood guy isn’t in an opera, this dude is cracked holy shit😦💕
I think that his way of blaming his allies depends on this way to play in Master as support, people don't play the same way and he will not be able to advise his 4 other mates to play like masters and win in gold.
i didnt know a peoples rank are so different all my roles are close to the same rank support is diamond and my rest are plat 1
That was 100% Will Ferrell singing
Shoot the supports and we win”
Yeah, not the strat. DPS role is very impactful. Knowing *when* to shoot at which target/role is hugely important. Pressure on tank, pressure on enemy dps when needed.
I think part of it is that on zen you just pop a discord on their tank and let your dps do the rest. Meanwhile on dps I didn't consider that I'M the one who has to damage tank this time instead of setting up for it
Watching this i would be so confused as to why this bastion is being kingof peeks
They CLEARLY know what theyre doing
Like his choice of targeting is something that a Zen or high damage support would do
Rather than fucking up the tank
Its just that he needs to get out of that mindset when playing dps
You always say “you’re doing too much” but you don’t say what the right amount is
I'm not really sure what Emongg means by it.
I think the right amount is do one thing either until that one thing is too dangerous or you succeed doing the thing.
lol I'm a support main and I tried DPS and at one point my DPS rank was higher than support
That zen is doing more than he was.
well i'm a master 1 support and master 5 dps and d2 tank full soloQ, how explain that
Taking high ground is good but You need healing to keep that high ground. Most range dps do not have self sustaining . Relying on the support is kind of risky in low rank. So i forced to play near my support. Mei is great for low rank 😁. Can't wait for season 9 .
