    One thing you need to do is slow down the water runoff until the turf is established. One way would be to divert the water via ditch at the top of the ridge above the rip-rap to bypass the pond for a while until grass starts growing up hill from the pond. As it is, a heavy rain would probably cause silt to fill up the voids in the rip-rap. Good luck, everything is beginning to look beautiful. You have certainly put in the work.

    Nice job Kap. I'd take the rip-rap a bit higher up b/c that will cover areas that will not need to be navigated when the lawn cutting begins. Imagine riding the lawnmower and it's on a steep slanted angle. No need for that. I'd take the rip-rap higher up. Good work, my friend.

    you've gotten a couple of good suggestions from comments on this video, a couple have suggested sod, and one suggested using fabric and smaller river gravel above the rip rap. I like a combination of both of those. Use the river rock on the steep part right above where you stopped with rip rap, that way you're not breaking an ankle walking on rip rap, and then sod above it. Sod might be expensive, but when you figure your time and diesel, hours on machinery, you have already spent a fair amount chasing your silting issue, better to stop the bleeding now than to keep fiddling with half measures

    • @kapperoutdoors
      @kapperoutdoors  6 лет назад +1

      OK thanks. That dang sod is expensive, and I think they have a minimum order, but I'm going to check with our landscaper.

    I hope the weather works with you. Rain makes grain. Your tools geterdone right the first time. Good luck with the yard and at 211 with the beans jumping up.

    Now that your pond is full, maybe cut a swale / ditch following your access road to divert the water away from the pond to drain out in the woods.

    • @kapperoutdoors
      @kapperoutdoors  6 лет назад

      yeah I am debating on doing just that. I could make a gravel path and the water could follow right around... We'll see what the landscaper suggests when he gets here too..

    It looks like that rip rap needs to go a little higher. Also what do you think about adding rip rap under the Pier and extending it about 5 feet on the other side? I paused it at the 5:09 mark and it appers to be washing away there also. it may eventually wash aay the soil under the top where the pier meets the soil.
    You would know best as you can inspect it, im just looking at a picture.

  • @gmoncrieff
    @gmoncrieff 6 лет назад +3

    If your having so much trouble with seed washing out, maybe it's time to take the hit and buy sod turf for that area? More expensive but it will root fast and no need to worry about it washing away.

    Hi Kapper, that really looks steep above rip rap. Not sure what you going to have guys working on yard do. What would be the cost difference to go with mat and river rock up the rest of the step part or rip rap and be done with the run off during heavy spring rains before grass is growing. My project was not near as steep and every rain mud slide to drainage pipes. The mat and river rock stopped all those problems and no more nasty areas to try and mow.

  • @bretts1
    @bretts1 6 лет назад

    Kapper, I went way back in your videos before the channel cut. The water was so different. Your sure have it circulating great. I put this suggestion and then deleted a couple times in past.
    Using Kapper’s Justification process if you matted the yard and made a River Rock yard, (they do it in Florida on islands,). your have the following benefits:
    No more silt going into lake and it clear up beautiful and even be able to add some blue color like my adopted mom does.
    No muddy shoes going into house.
    Mrs. Kapper would not have to mow on hill side (safety Issue). Especially if someday you get a ZTM for her to spend less time mowing and more time on projects.
    Works great in winter I had it done between home and garage and a valley for runoff to two 8” Green PVC tiles. No slipping or falling. Hand blower blows snow away.
    If leaves fall on it easy to blow off to woods.
    You could get Mrs Kapper to design a big K or something with the flat rocks by the snake shed you videoed.
    Never have to worry about big rainstorm washing the expensive yard into lake, no dandelions in spring.
    Beautiful year round, no summer drought burnout..
    Drive your machinery and 4 wheelers right up to door no tracks.
    I sure you think I am crazy. Everyone did. Until they seen the beautiful results. I paid all that money for hydro seeding and if one has consistently run off it just flat fails. The before and after pics are incredible. My contractor just could not envision it, nor could his crew or anyone else.
    Heck you have the equipment bury a big plastic tank at top of hill, while your planning rock out and you could add boulders and recirculating line and have one beautiful waterfall in your back yard right next to beautiful lake. Look on y-tube and some of the awesome back yards folks pay a fortune to have materials to build hills add expensive rocks and slabs you got for the taking.
    Are you going to spend more time on 211 or in woods eventually rather than making a one of a Kind backyard. The deer would be playing in you water fall next to house. “How cool is that baby”
    Kapper I sure if you and Mrs. Kappers just spent 15 mins brainstorming it with a pad of paper what you two would come up with would be nothing short of spectacular. Heck with your talents do it on computer before you commit big bucks for folks to do a yard that will cost you with continuous maint and you have to be watering day and night to get it established, the fertilizer, then mowing $$$I can see it in my mind now. Lol I just had to share my experience with my mess and hope you at least think about the potential.
    Just having the lake a beautiful blue the summer would be awesome. The video I sent you of my contractor buddy doing a video for Cat was a job with private lake and the had redo hill side and add more rip rock up a hill side like yours because of Mother Nature constantly eroding away the bank.

      Brett, I don't think that is a bad idea at all! Not saying that we will do it, but it is a good idea. I don't recall getting a video though.. It would be pretty cool for sure!

    Looking at your bank above the pond I think you need to get much more grass growing there to control the silt runoff. Getting grass growing in the yard will help too. Good luck. I thought you traded the Kioti in on the new tractor.

  • @trickydicky78s3

    turf it, or sod as you call it. watered every day morning and night not during the heat of midday and within a week it will be rooted in for sure if you use a nitrogen phosphorus and potassium feed otherwise commonly known as NPK. that will help it to store energy, promote growth and accelerate photosynthesis. all of which will get it rooting in double quick and have it looking a lushious green

    • @kapperoutdoors
      @kapperoutdoors  6 лет назад

      I would love to put sod down, but no way we can swing that.... But they are going to drill the seed and straw it.

  • @garycrumrine9538

    those two runoff areas are always going to flow water. I believe your best option for now is fabric and rip rap all the way up the hill to the driveway. As you said, they are always going to flow from uphill. Coming all the way down that road. You cannot stop it, but that rock should do a good job of slowing it down and keeping the silt on shore. My only question is do you have a plan if the silting continues into the lake. With the rock along the edge of the water now, you have no place for the Bobcat to get down there to remove silt. Trying to drive down to the pond on those rocks will be sketchy.
