Tim, when I've had to move rip rap in the past , i use the "slow is smooth, smooth is fast" approach. Start at the bottom of the pile with a level bucket on the ground, and constantly work and wiggle the bucket up and down a little at a time while moving in low range. It's takes a bit of practice, but it's definitely less wear and tear on the machine.
I was a building inspector for a county in Illinois for about 10 years and requiring riprap on a pound is just crazy. I suspect if asked ….. he could not point to a specific section in the building regulations that provide for riprap. Good example of regulatory overreach in my humble opinion.

My dad and I are ready for outdoor activities with our 3025e and new Tiller but living 45min South of Chicago the weather has been really wet cold and we had 50 - 60 mph winds yesterday. Today was decent so we went out and worked on getting our bee boxes ready for our Honey Bees, we are going to try Beekeeping. Seeing you working with your tractor has made us antsy, but you have taught us some things and we appreciate all you and your family does keep up the great work and God Bless you all

I thought for sure you were going for a slide into the pond a few times! I purchased the Heavy Hitch tooth bar a couple of years ago. I needed a custom length for my loader bucket, due to some fork tubes welded in the corners. Heavy Hitch was very helpful and got me the length I needed at no additional cost.
💥 The potential erosion on that pond is laughable. That inspector needs his head examined. 😂

Yup, unless there is water flow there is little chance of erosion.
Maybe the inspector thinks that he saw a wakeboarding boat ripping up and down the pond!

My parents have lived in the same house for 43 years back of a 10 acre lot is a pond fed from a spring its erosion over the past 40 years is actually negative

A good friend of mine lives in a house on a lake. He and his neighbor have had problems with erosion on the edge of their lawns. They were talking about having a contractor come in and build a sea wall to stop it. I suggested having a contractor come in, square up the edge with an excavator, digging down deep enough to set concrete Jersey barriers on top of stone, then backfill on the water side with rip rap then gravel before covering with soil on the lawn side. The reason for the erosion is two fold, their lawns slope toward the lake and their propertys are next to a creek that feeds into it.
Use the extra rip rap to do the base under his shop floor, or the driveway and apron to it.

no not an idiot. videos of the difficult stuff is good learning material. classic catch 22 however. a much bigger machine like your 5075 would be great but you would destroy the yard etc.

That rip rap looks nice around there. I can also see how the heavy hitch tooth bar is advantageous in digging into that pile.

Fill me in on the weight capacity of those tiny hooks? The width looked big enough to be over 2,000+ working load but those hooks looked pitiful.
I could be wrong and they could be sized right they just don't look very capable for that size machine if they spec out properly then everybody else use this to secure your stuff properly.
Maybe if you had 4 of those at four corners and one over the implement you would do fine driving. However if in an accident your equipment would ghost ride down the street. 🤣 Keep us all safe out there.
Also I've heard rumors of people cutting straps that are not properly sized and hanging them on the driver side mirror, always check your load.
It's funny that you post this video today, we were just talking about doing the same kind of rock work on the drainage going into the lake and out of the dam drain.... not sure noe that my 2025r could handle that size rock! Again great info. Have a blessed weekend....
This is 12” …maybe get 8”. It is much easier to deal with.

Hey Mark, my son and I used our 2025r to move 22 tons of rip rap that size. We had the standard bucket without our tooth bar on it it and it did great. It took about 4 hours to move and place in a ditch.

TO late now but suggest raking off the top towards you and it might be loose enough to dig easier. Just a thought - Like Robert Keime note below. Tooth bar is wonderful ! Here in East Texas, trees are blooming, Daffodils giving good show - even the Japanese version and Iris going crazy nice.

In construction, we normally use dozers to move rip rap. The office tends to cry like little girls when we bend the buckets on our skidsteers (1300 each). ;)

I tend to agree with the inspector based on the water that will run off of the roof onto the sloped bank. Lots of hydraulic force there, especially if falling from the roof line.
its called a gutter... generally you don't just let water run off a roof to undermine the building foundation. control the runoff direct it right into the pond lol
Rip Rap certainly has its purpose. I agree with you that application doesn’t seem to be one of them. Years ago I thought i missed the boat on getting a MSL. After watching your videos, I’m glad I have the non MSL that I have. Thanks for training an “old dog” thru your videos. Blessings to you and Christy.
I think the rocks look nice around the edge. Will also help keep the mower from getting to close and stuck.

If anything good about the MSL loader it looks like it kept you from over loading the bucket and sprinkling your hood. Good looking job Tim.

No. Would likely choose propane furnace if doing it again.
Tim when a pond rises up and lowers down it does erode the bank not as fast as a stream or river but it does weaken the side walls

That self-leveling loader looks to be a real PITA when doing bucket work, grapple work, ...pretty much everything except for moving pallets. Glad it wasn't an option when I got my 1025R Deere, because I might have opted for it before I saw one in real-world action.
I just don't think it's feasible on small machines. Larger machine that are going to be loading trucks, wagons etc. on a consistent basis, with either massive volume/weight it makes sense, but other than a pallet fork attachment, it actually seems like it is more of a hindrance than help on these sub-compact and compact tractors.
I used one of the larger ones , thought they worked pretty good . But that was handling bale's and silage , not earth working
I think I recall that the self leveling option actually reduces the loader weight capacity.
No, the 220r MSL proved to have 49% more lift capacity than the NSL. We did a complete test on it.
I use a bobcat with a hyd.SL at work daily . You soon learn to appreciate the JD MSL . The bobcat system will never stay level , I unload pallets from semis and just from deck height to ground it will tilt enough for the pallet to slide off .
I wanted to watch how the bucket handled that rock. But the thing that amazed me the most was how the paint stood up to the sharp edges of the rock. If only all paint was that good! ANd I sure could not make myself drive the front wheels that close to the water! I've seen too many tractors go swimming to join their ranks. 😂😂😂
My 1026R is doing its usual thing of skiving off in the shed. It has some sort of electrical issue that no one has been able to successfully fix but I'm sick of buying new AU$300 batteries for it all the time. So I bust my back time and again, shovelling by hand the flood-damaged 250m sloping quartz gravel driveway while the tractor sits clean and dry in the shed. 🥺🙄😲
Next time put fabric under the rock. it will keep dirt from washing away, rock from sinking in the dirt, and stop the weeds from growing up through the rock. Makes a much better looking job a year down the road.

That is the 1st time I have heard the name riprap, kind of a cool name for the rock. Where I am it is referred to as shot rock. I thought that you had a rock bucket. That type of material is very hard to work with but you are getting it done. Like to see the leveling system.
Jelen, it's a common term on nautical charts around bays and harbors, too. As a small sailboat owner, I want to keep my hull well clear of riprap.

Nice work! Around here if you build within 20" of a shoreline salt or fresh water all types of regulations creep in.I suspect in your case the concern is rain run off from both the land and the pole barn that's planned. Best Regards, Jay

I am doing my drainage and grading plan on my property right now, so far I've moved over 250 tons of rock so far with probably another 100 ton to go. I have a 3038E with a loader and a backhoe.
My first thought, before you mentioned it, was the limited curl of that bucket.
My Oliver OC46 has a self leveling bucket and has considerably more curl, but doesn't dump near as far as that Deere. I guess you can't have everything 😎
Tim I've found with the MSL you need to keep it as low to the ground when loading it up with material and to do the "little shake" like we usually do with it raised up. It's not ideal and it does take some getting used to. But the extra lift capacity is worth it, I think.
I thought that was quite impressive for that tractor. Be nice if it curled more however. Self leveling bucket is not always beneficial. Great video showing the capabilities of the 2038r. It’s broke in now. Lol. God bless. Len from Kalamazoo Michigan.
I found using pallet forks for moving big rocks like this works well. The key though is to use 4 forks on the pallet forks frame insted of 2 and spaced 'one notch' apart. This makes it wide enough to keep most of the rock from spilling off plus has the benifit of allowing dirt or gravel to fall through. I done this with my 2025r, the draw back is the limited uesefull weight lifting between the weight of the forks and the leaverage from more weight being farather forward. But as a bonus the forks slip under / between the rocks a lot easier and you can take rock higher up the pile to Ballance the loss of useful lift.

I have a JD 970 I bought new in 96 and the second day I tried to move a rock and bent the top of my bucket. I think JD standard bucket is weak. I had a Kubota for 10 years before that and done much harder work and didn’t bend the bucket.
There are mods from small companies that can stop that JD weakness. You can even get them for Kubota now. Not so much for reinforcement but hooks, receivers, etc.
Did a bank rehab job a few years ago. Didn't know at first about needing permit so gave an estimate. Before I started I checked with zoning officer and found that I need to go through the conservation district and get a gp3 permit thru DEP. Had to design how it was to be done, by their specs, silt fence, R4 stone. Doubled the price for the job between all the consulting, planning, etc.
I think that is for stream banks....flowing water...only right? I don't think it applies to still water (ponds). Correct me if I am wrong.
@@TractorTimewithTim It was for a 240 acre reservoir/lake in a private community, Pennsylvania. Original bank support was a 6x6 pressure treated wall.

We use a lot of rip-rap here for shoreline revetment and it is not at all easy to work with. I don't think I have ever gone into it with a tractor bucket and felt like I was doing a proper job, it's just awkward and no amount of video editing can make it look easy! So kudos for making a "real" video of a difficult task, with a shiny new bucket no less. There is a slightly smaller rock we call "gabion" that is more amenable to bucket transfer and also good for erosion control, and I tend to prefer that for tractor work. By the way, is it just me or does the right rear tire seem low on air?

Tim, I don't know the particular s of this job, I can tell you that wind driven current will erode a steep bank. The down wind bank will get long enough and flat over time.
It is true but only on a larger body of water. A small 1 acre pond simply does not have the surface area to create any force behind the wind driven waves. But hey if it pays I would do the job also.
Everytime it rains water will flow into the pond and cause erosion on the sides of a pond we built a pond in Missouri and had that problem with the banks eroding on the sides of the pond. And if they are building a building near the pond they should think about running the gutters into a down spout that will empty into the pond out past the dry edge of the rip rap .
I've never seen this material before watching today. That had to be rough on the tractor with how the material stuck together. Considering how muddy it was, did the wheel weights add supplemental ballast?
Rip rap is about the best erosion control one can have especially from a cost standpoint.
Pond banks do erode. I have a 3/4 acre pond that has seen significant bank erosion over the years. It's mainly due to the level of the pond varying over the years. As you know, in the Midwest, we have some very wet years and some very dry years.
Have you previously discussed the traction strips on the trailer ramp?
Rub some dirt on it, it'll be OK!!! Were your rear tires low on air so you wouldn't mess up the yard?
I always run them a bit low.
Try going into the pile from more of a side angle and the rip rap might scoop better. Rip rap is def a tough customer to handle. Nice work and nice video as always Tim.
Inspectors! Where I live in Oklahoma outside of a city limit in a housing addition I don't have to deal with them on my property.
I agree on the erosion. Are used to live with a lake in part of my backyard and I talked to the engineers and they said the reason for the rocks was to prevent erosion because of moving water because they allowed boating there even though they limited it to electric motors only so people could it go fast. I don’t see where ponds gonna have enough motion in there to cause enough of a wave or movement to a road even if they were to put a fountain in there. It’s not like they’re out there driving boats back-and-forth and causing little waves and I’ve never seen a pond with erosion problems, you might get areas where the end of a swale washes out a little butt those usually fix themselves eventually. I just don’t see any point to this unless the owner wants it but I think it’s a ridiculous code the only thing I can think is that because it’s so close to a road they’re just overly cautious because they don’t want the ground near the road washing out but there’s a pretty good slope there and I still don’t see it being a problem. Sometimes I think they just make a lot of this stuff up because they can. Lol
The lack of curl back with the MSL is quite obvious, but the tooth bar looks like it helps with that some.
Normally when we riff Raff we put it along the bank not in the water keep the bank from washing out the best thing to do is lay fabric down first... And yes that will be hard on a lightweight bucket and with them big teeth hanging out probably prying on it more yet

I must admit that I was thinking "why do you need rip rap to control erosion when the pond has obviously been there for years and there are no signs of erosion"

@@TractorTimewithTim I didn't think that your collection had one. You could of used it for the rip rap. Also you should of used it for separation of the dirty gravel.
Almost looks like you need to allocate one bucket to be expendable for working with Rip Rap and other abrasive gravels :) But they sell paint every day to fix up.
Great video Tim, I’ve watched many of your videos, but can’t recall if you have a rock grapple I think you probably must. The rock grapple I have has a basically a large tine bucket bottom, doesn’t have much for sides but I think it would be ideal for moving a pile of rock that size. What are your thoughts?
It would also afford you a longer each compared to a standard material bucket.

For the negative comments, Have they ever worked with rocks? It's not as easy as you think.
With the laser, have you thought about having 2, at different heights and grade, then you could have a level side, and a sloping grade.

My complaint for many years, no tractor loader rolls back far enough. A real commercial loader the bucket rolls back so the sides are level nd you have a full bucket.
Get yourself a golf umbrella or two to protect your camera equipment from rain showers.
I love my tooth bar everyone should get one what a difference and it can be removed. Hey Tim I am looking for a pair of 15 x 19.5 nhs tires at a good price new or used for my 4300. Any ideas I am SE of you. 22 years old the dry rot is bad but still round lol.
So glad I live in a state and county that does not have government agents to mandate what I can, can’t or have to do to my property.
