It's more of a gameplay balance decision rather than lore. Actually the defense spending of Liberty is absurdly high compared to other houses. Their budget is calculated based on a presumed war with 2 major houses.
What they should have done is have a good Liberty fighter be available at level 8. Since you start Mission 4 at level 7, this will let the player think that if they can just get through this mission they get a very nice fighter. The fun part is that Mission 4 is the one where you have all of Liberty turn against you.
"The Bretonia, the Rheinland, the Hispania, the Kusari....the Liberty." Listening to that line as the five sleeper ships burst through the blockade of warships gave me shivers even to this day.

Star citizen will offer what you would want from a freelancer 2 (from Chris Roberts too). There are many little nods to freelancer and other previous CR's game in star citizen.
There were reports that Digital Anvil and Microsoft Game Studios worked on a Freelancer sequel called Project Lonestar for the Xbox 360 until Digital Anvil dissolved in 2006.
They probably planned a sequel because the top-tier ship was the Anubus and top guns were 7/10. Freelancer has 10/10 guns and the ship that can use them is the pirate-made Titan... things you cannot find or use in campaign mode.
Sure, as long as I'm not shot at, knocked out, held at gunpoint, electrocuted, skewed alive by giant alien shapeshifters, have to dive our windows, or fight off nomad incubi, everything should be fine.

That said, we never actually saw how the war ended in Starlancer (or how the situation went from a sucsessful push back to a complete blockade), even Freelancers opening doesn't answer it fully as they left millions of people behind who were still resisting, and the Coalitions government wasn't exactly stable.

Well. There is a fan project to rebuild the game completly in Unreal Engine. Not sure where the project is in terms of completion. Name is Liberlancer.
Freelancer remains one of my all time favorite games and it's super cool to see someone make a video about it. Absolutely TOP notch story and game world. One of the biggest sleeper hits ever that NEEEDS a remaster!
I LOVED this game and spent my youth in it. Even dipped into MP briefly. Please please please, cover the Rhineland (where I'm from IRL, ironically, not just it's synonym for Germany or a German state, but the actual region itself) as well! Appreciated in advance!
This is fun to see. Many years ago, I used to write mods for this game. Custom ships, capital ships, weapons, etc. I put a LOT of hours into this game, and used to keep a server running around the clock.
Seeing this video reminded me of two things about the game: 1) The nearly unbridled exploration available to you was incredible and kept me playing long after the main story campaign ended. By using your map to track other faction's patrol routes, you could find hidden jump holes to remote systems. It's extremely dangerous, but if you're skilled and daring enough you could even find the wreckage of the missing 5th Sleeper Ship deep in lawless space. Incredibly satisfying. 2) There needs *needs* *NEEDS* to be a viable countermeasure to anti-cruise missiles. Those things are useless to the player because your targets never manage to successfully run away, but when enemy factions have them, every mission turns into a simple "kill everything at this location" because you have no ability to escape the combat zone. Incredibly frustrating.
The countermeasures did sometimes work against the cruise missiles, but it was exceptionally uncommon. The best way to run was usually to run as fast as you could away in 1 direction, then turn and blast through the chasing fighters and cruise then. Normally worked for me about half the time.
IDK why but having a sci-fi youtuber cover freelancer gave me a very emotional crying session. I mean this game is obscure as fuck. And being plucked from it is just awesome!
I remember there was a lot of lore in each of the star systems. Liberty despite its position as an economic hegemon was experiencing hard times. Competition from the other powers resulted in some hollowing out of industry with groups like the xenos and liberty rogues formed from unemployed workers, I also recall there was some sort of cataclysm in the Texas system from a failed jump gate experiment.
I really didn't expect you guys to do this, what curveball. The funny thing is I still have the game installation file in one of my external hard drives and now I am going to fish it up.
I actually got my hands on a copy of this game a couple of years ago, had a good time going down memory lane. I'll have to look for a copy of starlancer and a working Dreamcast next.
Didn't expect to see you do a video on something as obscure as Freelancer. I wonder if someday we might get a followup to Freelancer where we find out the nations of the Eastern Coalition had the exact same idea as the Western Alliance and created their own succesor space states. Anyway, I hope you'll do more on the world of Freelancer soon.
Actually, the Coalition was wiped out by an unknown alien force shortly after the Colony ships arrive in the Sirius sector but that story was edited out of the game but if you watch the opening cinematic, the damaged ship that lands near the Liberty landing site, in fact, a refugee ship from Earth carrying the warning.
@@Gelb33 yeah i remember that, but because they editted it out it didn't remain as canon. I tbh want to know how we got from the end of Starlancer were the alliance was actually managing an effective pushback and rebuilding to the complete loss by the opening cutscene of freelancer. The tigers wouldn't have gone down without one hell of a fight.
I remember this game back when I was in high school. This was one of my favorites! I can't find a copy of it today though (I lost the copy I had back then). I've looked and looked to no avail. And it makes me sad.
If continuing on the Freelancer track, conduct an organizational look at the Gas Miners Guild (GMG), especially on their combatting of the Rhineland Navy in the nebulas. Other honorable mentions are the Hispania crime syndicates (Outcasts or Corsairs), or of course the Order
@@alfredaflatooni the ability to explore was great. Interesting exploration in the game of a narcotics bound society with the Outcasts. And given the dialogue in the Corsair home system, there was an impending Corsair invasion of the other houses which would have been real great to unpack in a proper game narrative.
Damn this surprised me! Freelancer is really a diamond in the rough. I remember playing countless hours in the original game and in the Discovery online-servers.
Factions I would like to see next: 1. The Yuuzhan Vong Empire - Star Wars 2. The Chiss Ascendancy - Star Wars 3. 3rd Street Saints - Saints Row 4. The Vulfer Imperium - Stardrive 5. The Space Wolves - Warhammer 40K
I'm surprised the Institute missed a detail. The fifth sleeper ship did in fact arrive in the Sirius sector, light years off-course and badly damaged. The surviving colonists turned to piracy to survive, and became the powerful and highly secretive Corsairs
I got so many goosebumps and nostalgia pangs from watching this and Marc's new play through that I had to install it again. No-CD.exe is essential as well as Advanced Widescreen HUD.

Rhineland next Rhineland next Rhineland next
Also one on the "lost" Sleeper ship Hispania would be awesome
I remember this game back when I was in high school. This was one of my favorites! I can't find a copy of it today though (I lost the copy I had back then). I've looked and looked to no avail. And it makes me sad.
What memories and what an interesting twist. From a former First Lieutenant of The Elite, nicely done
Agree 100%, the Outcasts home system of Omicron Alpha was one of my favorite systems to visit.
@@alfredaflatooni the ability to explore was great. Interesting exploration in the game of a narcotics bound society with the Outcasts. And given the dialogue in the Corsair home system, there was an impending Corsair invasion of the other houses which would have been real great to unpack in a proper game narrative.
Yo this game was my favorite back in the day! Great to see it given love again!
Yesssss!!!!!
One of my favourite games from one of my favourite channels
Never thought this day would come
Love to hear anyone talking about Freelancer again
Woah where did this come from. I loved Freelancer.
Didn't really look at what I was clicking, but I recognized that fighter.
I probably have not thought about Starlancer in 20 years.
Damn this surprised me! Freelancer is really a diamond in the rough. I remember playing countless hours in the original game and in the Discovery online-servers.
God, I love(d) this game. The absolute pinnacle of video games. Thankyou. Just… such good memories
Almost 20 years later and this is still my favorite game.
Who ever chose to do freelancer lore, I thank you.
Love this episode. Freelancer is still my #1 fav game
Great video. Would love to see more of the factions in Freelancer.
Factions I would like to see next:
1. The Yuuzhan Vong Empire - Star Wars
2. The Chiss Ascendancy - Star Wars
3. 3rd Street Saints - Saints Row
4. The Vulfer Imperium - Stardrive
My favorite Server was S.C.U.M. where you started one of the Xenos bases and worked your way up the criminal food chain.
O my god, Yes!! I never tought this game will ever come to light again. this game deserve a remake more than everything!
Yeah Freelance lore! Hoping for more Templin Institute videos on them. :D
I got so many goosebumps and nostalgia pangs from watching this and Marc's new play through that I had to install it again. No-CD.exe is essential as well as Advanced Widescreen HUD.
Discovery Freelancer is still keeping the dream alive everyone
Yay! A respite from those damn Incoming videos! Love this narrator and hearing them talk about all these different things fiction!
I would love to see the Templin Institute tackle the other major houses of the Freelancer universe
YES! this game, one of my all time favorites.
Freelancer! Holy shit! Everyone should play Freelancer Discovery and Starsector
Freelancer
Oh to have this game back in my library.
Go freelancer
Awesome game.
And there are still Multiplayer servers.
The HHC Server in Germany is still active.
Wow, Freelancer, huh? That's my childhoold, right there. Good times. Good game.
AAAAA Freelancer is one of my absolute favorite games.
Great game, had so much fun playing this at a LAN back in the day.
Need a sequel of some kind in this system. By far the greatest space game ever made.
Freelancer, now that is a legendary game.
