  • In this video, I demonstrate how I load the Minolta 16-QT using motion picture film. I talk about the cartridges that can be used with the camera and the considerations you should take to get great results with them.

Good demo of the minolta 16mm film system. I have some 50d I need to try out. What's nice is, you can reload 110 carts with 16mm film too. A bit more complicated, but 50D is worth the effort.

Thanks. Yes, any 16mm film can be used with the Minolta 16QT. I got the chemicals needed to process ECN-2 film. I'll shoot some tests in the future using Kodak Vision 3 films and the Minolta.

This was a super helpful video! I have used the 3d printed cartridge with my Minolta 16ii and absolutely hated the process of loading that thing. So to hear the merits of using the original cartridge I think I might have to purchase one 😅.

Yeah, the original cartridges are better for sure, but I'm glad 3D printing one is also an option.
      Thanks for watching.

You can also cut a dummy strip of film before you go into your dark room so it is easier to cut out your strips:)

So, 36 inches for 40 photos would work fine for the take up spool? or what would be the max? (minolta 16 II)

Technically there is enough space to fit up to 36 inches of film, yes. I don't think it's a good idea to do it, tho. I load the camera with around 24 inches of film most of the time, and I feel like I have to force it to make it fit. I don't want to do that anymore. I get a lot images even if I use 18 or 20 inches of film
If the roll of film is too tight the chances of damaging the film increase. If it touches the walls of the cartridge, the plastic may scratch it, especially if it's a 3D printed cartridge.

Thanks Ruben!!! Great video and information!!! I just 3D printed my first cartridge! Also how is it going with the ECN processing at home? What kit did you get?

      That's great!
I'm very busy these days, it may take some time, but I'm going to make it for sure. I got the kit from "Conspiracy of Cartographers" They say I can use any fixer, so I'm going to use the Kodak fixer I have for black and white film. The kit included 2 small bags with powder to prepare 1 liter. I'm going to prepare only half liter for the test.

Very cool, can’t wait to see how it comes out! What do you think of the CS2 kit from cinestill? It says it’s easier and safer for home use.

@@panavision241 Safer? Interesting. I'll use a mask when I mix the chemicals.
I have never processed color film myself. I can't comment on an specific formula, but I have seen the results people get and they look great.
I have never used stop bath when I process b&w and I get great results. I guess there are several ways to get similar results using different methods. Filmboy24 shared the formula he uses. You can buy most of the ingredients on eBay. I guess it depends on the amount of work you are whiling to put in the process. You can buy the cake mix or make it from scratch.

How’s the shutter on your QT does it stick at all? Did you do any service on yours?

    • @TheCinematographyLab
      @TheCinematographyLab  10 месяцев назад

@@panavision241 It seems to be a generalized problem with the cameras. Yes, the shutter of my camera was sticky too. I bought a black camera and it had the same problem. My friend Carlos bought a camera and same problem... I like tinkering with things, so I fixed them. There is an article or two about this topic. Fixing them is easy. You just have to clean the old grease and apply a few tiny drops of oil. I'm not going to make a video about this because my channel is about cinematography. I should make one about still photo. It's a bigger market and people react better to those.
