Obsessions give us serenity. It's good to love old objects instead of hoarding new ones.
"our hands love a camera" That sentence feeds my soul. Excellent movie!
The writing on this one is so good. Also brave to edit without music, love this.
Tell people you love that you love them. Tell people you love that the time you spent with them doing X was special to you. If there is an object that you identify with that reminds you of them and your time with them don't be afraid to say so. My object was a picture I took of my dad at work. He was testing boards for computers at his workstation ~1973, it was a weekend, he had to go away to install the boards somewhere Monday and had brought me to his office so he could work while my mum was at work. He had a "work camera" and, as a precocious seven year old I was compelled to take a picture. It didn't go over well. I think I asked about the picture a couple of times after that then time passed. Later, when I had children of my own, my dad handed me the picture. It could have been a pipe he never smoked, skates he only wore once to take me skating, a multi coloured set of nut drivers he had in his work tool box I could never touch. The picture is posted at my desk and although I have much better tools now, I would have used his. Our memories fade and sometimes it's objects that we can attach those memories to that keep them alive.
I really enjoy this art gallery style of filmmaking. Thanks for this!
If you like this you’ll love the films of Charles and Ray Eames
The chalk. I use the same, and it has kind of changed my life. I have a giant chalkboard in my study, and I think and plan out loud with it now. It used to just be there, but then I found the Hagoromo chalk, and everything changed with it. I changed with it... my kids can see my thoughts, calendar, bills, quotes, etc. I'm so thankful for this chalk.
Your videos whole heartedly cure my destroyed attention span every monday
perfectly put
There are objects in my life that I call prized possessions. Examples include: my jacket, covered with patches I've collected travelling all over the world, my official Raiders of the Lost Ark fedora, modified with a zebra-skin hatband and shoelace chin strap, and my Starbucks city-themed coffee cup from Manila, a gift from a friend on my first visit to his nation. Just about everything else I can throw away, or replace, but the handful of prized possessions I hold dear are just as much a part of my life as my foot.
that essay-like format is fascinating.
I love reading the comments and being part of your Circle of Influence
I wonder how Van feels about people saying this is the best format of video he’s ever made when he even says in the video he stole it from the GOAT Charles Eames
Bro we all just want to see you talk about tools and gadgets. Nonstop.
This was a good one Van
You had me at bags, cameras and trucks…. Everything else was spot on to the things that I cherish too. I’d add books and journals too…!
Amazing film.
Right on Van keep being yourself
This video was excellent. Fine piece of art like the tools.
Always quality 🙌🏻
Pencil Sharpeners my grandfather collected as he travelled the world. He left them to me in his will.
Make a video!
@@isabel-rj4kd i may…. Bit outside of my channels niche but could be an interesting tie in.
Every sentence is packed with wisdom. I am truly in awe of what this man does! The Neistat brothers are legends.
Needed this.
Great video! Thank you for sharing :)
well done Van
Maybe the best and most profound video you've made yet.
Interesting subject Van
So good
Great. Spirited.
Not too many people I can share this with, Thank You for your efforts 👐👣🇨🇦🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
brilliant
there is some magic to this style of videos. you cannot miss it.
Yes, like Van says, it is the magic of Charles Eames.
Loads Will Be Blown
In the calm of a dusty street at noon,
Where the houses bask in the breath of June,
Stands a man with a burden heavy and wide,
Bracing his back ‘gainst the weight of the tide.
The loads will be blown, he muses aloud,
As he looks up high at a forming cloud.
He’s learned that the wind with its wandering sweep,
Carries both the light and the heavy deep.
The road that he treads is familiar and long,
Each pebble and crack sings a time-worn song.
The breeze has a chill, though the sun is bold,
Whispering tales of the new and old.
His steps are sure, though his back is bent,
On delivering his load is his intent.
But with each stride, he knows in his heart,
The ending’s the same place as the start.
For the loads will be blown, by gust or by gale,
Over mountains majestic, through valleys pale.
What matters the weight or the heft of the load,
When the wind decides where it will be stowed?
So he smiles at the sky, at the wind's soft moan,
At the vastness above and the distance unknown.
For like Frost’s own paths in a yellow wood,
He’s taken the one less understood.
And with a deep breath, he sets his load down,
No longer a bearer in this sleepy town.
For the loads will be blown, and he finally sees,
That the greatest of weights is lifted with ease.
With a tip of his hat to the cloud-covered sun,
He leaves the old burden where it had begun.
Walking away, his heart in repose,
For where the wind takes it, nobody knows.
a spirited man indeed
I just read your DM message here (in video) and bought Syds book. Thanks!
As a Blade Runner fan, I now want to know much more about how you ended up with this chess piece!
I assume Robert is Robert Clark, and that he made all the chess pieces... but how did you meet him? How did you get into possession of the piece? It's amazing!
I love that typewriter!
Dear Van, thank you so much for your channel.
As I see, you're "professional reader". Can you please tell or make a video about your library? How can you keep balance between decluttering and saving paper books? How big is your library? How often do you buy paper books and how are you choosing books to buy? How much time a week do you spend to read and how do you find time to read being a father of little two?
Thanks in advance.
Anton.
Very unique
I would really like a whole video on that invitation dispenser? What is that. Very cool???
I believe I remember a video of him talking about when he made it to get invitations out to something a long time ago. He would tear off the details one by one when he hand delivered them
@@JakeEarpYes correct he talked about the invitation dispenser at length. I believe it was one of his videos about trying to be a gallery artist and Tom Sachs telling him to just focus on the videos.
Good video
Mine is a Minolta Hi-Matic E made in the 1960s I acquired from my stepdad on his passing, I still shoot with it and even have had it tattooed on my arm.
Rocks.

What's happened to the merch store? All links seem to be unavailable - well here in the UK anyway???
Kodak DC4800..... my magic feather! wow
Was wondering what you were saying about the "Wii at ..." in Morse code LOL. Reminds me of the notice board in my first grade classroom. It made no sense to me that the top of the board said it was "NOT ICE".
Ok. Since we're on the subject of materialism. What are the blue shirts you wear? I have wanted to ask and avoided it for over a year, looking everywhere to try and find them myself but have had no luck. Please and thank you.
Now I’m concerned about Tom.
Hmmm….maybe it’s his workplace culture that’s been in the headlines?…or something else?
@@havefunbesafeWhar do you mean about the workplace culture?
And yeah I thought that was a strange thing to drop in as an aside.
@@dustyoldhateh basically someone came out and said that his rigorous “10 bullets” philosophy is oppressive and cult like. Which to be fair there is some truth to it. Nike’s canceled their deal with him over this and he’s been a bit more careful about what he says and i imagine the studio has become a bit more lax.
This video released a year ago. It was the thick of it.
@@CaptainRemixerOfficial “Play stupid games win stupid prizes” - Nike, probably 😩🪦
Please do a Black & White episode. I beg you. That Land Cruiser shot haunted me.
Hey! What pen do you use to engrave your cameras snd such?
What does that comment about Tom Sachs mean?
Google it
EVERLASTING HOPE
"The camera smells like hands." Yup.
I kind of think a good camera does give you special powers like Dumbo. Seems to me when i pull out a fancy camera with an epic lens that suddenly, people dont block my view and think i work at the venue, or at least they think I'm way more important than i really am...etc!
It's funny how often the people who constantly buy new things, especially if they're for tech items or for 'productivity', will turn around and tell you 'oh I'm a minimalist, actually'.
merch link broken?
When will we see this Van Neistat @wranglerstar arc? maybe over the next few years...
Van. You are a genius. Creative beauty. Peace and love brother.
Nought
anyone know what pencil lead hardness he uses?
There’s a certain raw creativity to your videos that keeps me coming back. It’s like seeing the world thru your eyes. Thanks for another gem
I wonder why he didn't bring up the Swiss Champ

What’s going on with Tom Sachs?
Tom is depressed right now, about people misspelling his last name.

Babe, stop what you're doing, Van posted on RUclips.
LEFTY GANG
That chalk though…. The box is in Korean….
I always thought it was “momentos”
Both are acceptable. Memento is more acceptable since it comes from “remember”
Momentos is not “acceptable” lol the word is mementos. As in Memento Mori. A momento is a different thing related to time.
Dense like a firearm, heavy and reliable is how I often describe myself.
Maybe first?
Confirmed.
🎉
Was the Irish flag thumbnail on purpose?
Us awkward lefties gotta stick together.
I somewhat hope Van Neistat improves on his projects, because it feels he is rehashing old ideas now. I still like it, but how often have we seen his pencils, truck and camera's by now?
