Does Your Tequila Have Additives?

  • I joined Grover and Scarlet from Tequila Matchmaker as we crashed El Tequileno's brand new tasting room for a blind taste test. Not all tequilas are created equally and we worked our way through ones that are all natural and additive free vs. tequilas that are manipulated. Be sure to download the TMM app as they are the greatest resource for any tequila lover. You can hear more of their story on The Agave Social Club Podcast.

    I like how they didn't completely bash tequilas with additives, but encouraged knowing the difference and taking a chance at different tequilas without additives etc. I was all about Patron when I was younger, then Don Julio and Clase Azul in recent years. Now just this year I took the chance and am now in love with Fortaleza and G4 tequilas. It is still taking me time to figure out certain flavors. I'm not the best with the palate tasting but am trying little by little and am noticing the difference here and there. I'm trying to train hahah. Cheers!!

      Great job, you just expressed most people’s journey. We don’t know what we don’t know and you’re willing to learn and try different things. Going from DJ/CA to Fortaleza/G4 is the ultimate growth. Keep it up as you’re on the right path. Much respect.

      But keep in mind that these are all of the brands that have gone through the program. There are others out there that for whatever reason have not gone through the program that could still be additive free.

      @@iamdougprice Tequila Ocho Plata is my favorite so I'm glad to see it on the list. I'll be in another state next week and plan to buy a few others for vacation, Fortaleza has been on my list to try for a while. Then I had been contemplating Gran Dovejo or Cascahuin but this video may have just moved El Tequileno to the top of the list.

    A topic of interest that seems to be getting more attention is the autoclave. It goes without saying the diffuser is an abomination. However, the autoclave gets some respectability, especially when it is used in a low-pressure method. There are a few tequilas that get raved about that use this low pressure method (Don Fulano for one), but only recently have I noticed some random negative comments about the autoclave itself, except when used in the low-pressure method. El Tequileno, a favorite for many of us, uses the high pressure method and no one seems to comment about the autoclave. To be fair, it’s not the reviewers who are commenting about the autoclave except to say it’s used, but it is the many fans. So, are we giving the auto calve a pass when its our favorite distiller, ie, El Tequileno? Or, is this just hoopla because the hardcore traditionalists want traditional ovens?

    • @iamdougprice
      @iamdougprice  2 года назад +1

      Hi Doug, good input. I personally believe it’s hoopla regarding autoclaves. I think low pressure autoclaves and brick ovens are virtually the same as the atmospheric pressures are very similar. There are some amazing brands such as Cazcanes, Atanasio, anything coming from 1146, and Calle23 to name a few that are utilizing low pressure autoclaves. Could there me an argument made for if high pressure has an impact, sure but I personally still think there are some great options that I wouldn’t turn my nose up at. Regarding El Tequileño, we’ve got a tequila that goes back to 1959 with mature highland agaves. They are using the same autoclaves that I believe were train carts at one time. It’s hard to deny the love and attention to detail that Tony and his team are giving for their tequila as I know other producer are doing the same with their autoclaves.
      For me at the end of the day, it’s a few factors I look for, taste, quality of agaves, care for the land and process as well as the time and passion that each producer puts into their tequila.
      Thanks for watching.

      @@iamdougprice care for the land is another interesting topic that is widely ignored (by the tequila drinkers) as more and more land is clear cut to plant agaves. Coffee sees a similar malady as farmers use methods to get their beans to market that has seen an enormous increase in popularity. I’ve only done a cursory read on the subject of agave but it appears to be one that can affect an entire industry if not cared for properly. Thanks for you insight with the autoclave and live your site. I have my own blind tasting to perform.
