Dr. Karen Lee - Opportunities to Synergize Health and Sustainability Outcome

  • Dr. Karen Lee, MD MHSc FRCPC, is an Associate Professor in the Division of Preventive Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta. In 2017, the Canadian Institute of Planners awarded Dr. Lee its President’s Award for her significant contributions to integrating health into municipal planning in Canadian communities and globally. Prior to returning to Canada, Dr Lee was in the US for a decade and a half and worked at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention In Atlanta and the New York City Health Dept. One of her projects was creating a peer-to-peer mentoring network for Healthy Community Environments involving 15 US communities. Since returning to Canada in 2018, in addition to her academic role as an Associate Professor, Dr. Lee is also a part-time Medical Officer of Health with Alberta Health Services Provincial Public and Population Health. As the Director of the Housing for Health project (www.uab.ca/H4H ) at the University of Alberta, she has worked with over 250 multi-sector partners from six provinces in Canada. Project successes have included the publication of the Healthy Community Guidelines (www.uab.ca/hcg ). She is also author of the book Fit Cities published by Penguin Random House.
