  • The Hong Kong international airport is the largest civil engineering project in history and the largest enclosed space in the world. It is also 16 miles out to sea and built on a platform that was constructed by leveling two small islands. S01E07

I've been watching documentaries like this for the past week - SR71, nuclear submarines, dams, aircraft carriers, and now airports. It's truly amazing what our species has been able to conceive, design, and make into a reality. We truly could solve any and all worldwide problems we face (poverty, hunger, clean water, shelter) if we wanted to.

Hong Kong International Airport is the busiest airport by cargo volume from 2010-2019, and 2021. The passenger traffic is lower than London Heathrow, busiest in Europe. But the cargo volume is 4 times as much.
HKIA has a very large cargo apron and 4 cargo terminals -- HACTL, AAT, CPCT (by Cathay Pacific) and DHL, each still have extra land for further expansions of the handling facilities. It has a massive concentration of cargo freighters, while in most international airports freight is restricted to passenger jet cargo holds only.

This is one of the most difficult yet successful engineering projects ever. Hong Kong airport has become one of the best airports in the world. Kudo to everyone who made this possible.

Kai Tak was a lot safer than this documentary made it out to be.
It was certainly high risk, but things were very controlled and saw hardly much incident/accident.
I admit with enough time possibly something could've happened. This project was necessary.

39:40 Hurricane Sam this was the worst the airport faced a plane landing in a storm and a severe fire. China Air 642 tried to land during the storm but got caught in gravity well when Sam's eye hit the airport. The plane flipped upside down, skidded across Runway 7L, and smashed into the pappy and dadum lights at the end of the runway and burst into flames. 208 passengers and crew were injured and the first officer, flight engineer, and the captain were killed. Since that incident there have been six accidents at the airport. 2006 Cathy Pacific 780 landed at the airport with an engine fire in both engines cause of the crash was contaminated gas from a hydrant in Surabaya. 2021 UPS 5X003 suffered an engine fire and had to go around NTSB is still investigating it. and 2022 United 2831 suffered a bird strike and fire and had to go around NTSB is still investigating the incident.

just to confirm - they didn't move all the airport equipment in seven hours! 99% of the ground equipment's was moved to the new airport over several weeks before the airport closed. Only the essential were left at Kai Tak to operate the scheduled flights. The dramatics is a bit much, I guess made for TV.

Hong Kong International is still growing. The reason they built it is to replace Kaitak. Everyone knows Kaitak is the most dangerous airport in the world. Every day from 1925 to 1998 big giant 747s landed on people's roofs. The citizens of Hong Kong did not like it so they built the new airport on Chek Lap Kok Island.
22 miles of road, 12 tunnels, 14 bridges, 30 miles of high speed rail, 4 new cities, two theme parks, one stadium, two terminal buildings, an underground subway, 47 miles of cable cars, six concorses, and four of the worlds largest cargo hubs complete the project.
Here is another fact when they leveled Chek Lap Kok Island it took 12 million lbs of dynamite and 4 dredgers to clear the channel so the runways could be built. For the third runway they did not dredge they capped it and used deep cement mixing and pile driving to form the runways base. In 2023 Terminal 2 and Concourse H will open and more planes will arrive as Hong Kong International Airport continues to expand.
In its history Hong Kong International only had three accidents First one was in 99 China Air 642 got caught in the gravity well of Hurricane Sam the plane was flipped upside down and hit the pappy and dadum lights on the runway causing a fire 208 passengers were injured and the captain, first officer, and chief engineer were killed that was the worse one.
