  • Well, I guess I had to upload something at some point or another, right?
This is Backyard Hockey 2005, one of the very last Backyard games ever made (no, nothing from 2007 onward counts, don't let anyone tell you otherwise). I've had this game in my posession for...I think about two years now? I've had it beaten for a good while too, so I guess it was as good a time as any to upload a video of it.
I could have probably recorded this video at a higher resolution but this game honestly doesn't have enough detail to warrant doing such, plus the intro doesn't play if you go higher than 640x480 (minor inconvenience, but eh). Plus the 2D graphics such as the text get all pixellated when you do such (there's no anti-aliasing in this game), so the default had to do.
This is pretty much your standard pick-up game. I haven't unlocked everything in this game as you might have noticed, but I don't have that kind of patience. Once again, I tried to go mostly only Backyard Kids as is my tradition in these videos, often limiting myself to only one pro which I did here. Oh yeah, and I totally picked Team Humongous because why would I not do that? If that weren't an option, I'd probably have gone with the Melonheads instead.
And...yeah, I'm gonna be honest, this game is ridiculously low in difficulty. I barely even had to try to make this game a complete blowout. The biggest issue is that doing a one-timer is pretty much a game breaker. Almost 80% of the time, you can score by going down either side of the rink, then passing the puck to the guy in the middle and shooting. The goalie misses it quite often when you do that. Once you figure out that simple game-breaking technique, this game is almost a complete pushover. Heck, the AI even had pretty good players and I still killed them. You can even tell a bit later in this video that I pretty much gave up and started goofing off and barely playing well, particularly to run the clock down so as to not drag this video out too long. When you have a ten-point lead, why even bother?
In fact, the whole game is just kind of meh. It's really a shame that the easy difficulty really brings this game down enough, there was a lot of clear effort that went into this game. There's a heavy amount of unlockables, the graphics for their time were pretty lively and cartoony in true Backyard fashion, and the new music is seriously quite kick-butt. I especially LOVE the main menu music in this game. I wish I could love this game but unfortunately too many small problems just bring it down.
Oh, and as for the "Goal" and "Penalty" graphics glitching out and going seizure-inducing, that's actually an in-game bug. That's not some incompatibility or computer weirdness, it does this on every computer I've played this game on, even my old Windows XP desktop. Just wanted to clarify that before anyone asked.
Oh, and one last note I want to make. This is the very last Humongous game ever to use the classic cursor that originally debuted in Freddi Fish 1, all the way back in 1994. Since this game was actually released in 2004 (the game was named a year ahead of its actual release date), this means the cursor had a near ten-year run before finally being retired. Hard to imagine that whoever originally drew it wasn't expecting it to become such a staple of these games for almost all of the company's life. Granted, it was showing up much less often around this time; from 2003 to 2005, the only games it appeared in were the two Yaga Junior Adventures and this one. Still, to think it stuck with the company for this long is really something else. Definitely one of the icons of the company to me and I was happy to see it make one final appearance.
    Well, enjoy.

This was the last game to have all of the backyard kids, then they started making the cuts and it all goes downhill from there.

Nope, that would actually be Football 2006.

What do you mean, characters like Ronny Dobbs and Kenny Kawgouchi got cut from that game it was a sign they were starting to cut corners.

Oh, I actually didn't notice that. Haven't played that game enough to know.
But actually, yeah, Football 2006 was the very very last game the original Humongous team was involved with, so I consider it the last "canonical" one. The 2007 games onward were made by a totally different dev team who simply didn't even care. I'm going to say the reason FB2006 ended up as mediocre as it did was because Humongous was probably on their last leg and couldn't really do much, so it at least has an excuse for being a bit disappointing. I'm going to say they probably only cut corners because they really had no choice.
The 2007 games onward, on the other hand, have no excuse, so they're more insulting to me.

Understandable, I had Backyard Baseball 2007 and I hated it the mechanics were terrible and it was just lazy plus it always caused my crappy computer to crash when I lost the CD Rom I got over it pretty quickly

I never played this one, mainly because I was never into hockey growing up as a kid. Last backyard game I played was skateboarding, which I loved immensely. Its cool to see the boardwalk from that game recycled into a hockey stadium in this, as well as the 3d kid models. Seriously sad Humongous isn't around anymore, and that the Backyard series is pretty much dead, but at least the original point and clicks have been remastered and ported onto steam.

I found your channel via your video back in 2010 of pajama man Sam. I love that you still play these types of games. This is what I grew up on and to be honest I miss some of them a lot. I'm glad someone is giving them the love they deserve. Love your video by the way!

Wow, according to the Internet a three-month gap from uploading counts as death now. I didn't think standards had gotten this exceedingly low yet.

Hah. The standards of the Internet just keep getting lower and lower, I suppose.
In all seriousness, there's a lot that has contributed to my huge decrease in activity.
      * Motivation. I don't have anywhere near as much as I used to. This has been caused by my increasing lack of games to actually walkthrough.
      * Lack of resources. This is the biggest one, easily. Because I'm at college, away from home and all my game consoles, computers, and everything in between, the *only* time I have to make any walkthroughs, barring the games I can play on my laptop, are during the brief times I have breaks and get to come home. I'm doing work at my college this summer too, so the usual three-month gap I usually have isn't happening this year either.
      * Spending my free time at other things. Free time is much more precious than it used to be, and frankly I'd just rather not spend it on playing kids' games. During my most active years on this site, I had *no life.* That is not an exaggeration, I never hung out with friends or anything so I had insane amounts of free time.
      * Spending my time elsewhere on the Internet. I'm not going to lie, I haven't been as active in the vintage PC gaming spaces as I used to be. I now do a lot of other things -- old TV preservation, contributing to other sorts of archives, playing games on Steam, hanging out with Internet friends in other circles...the simple fact is I've tried to open up my interests a fair amount, and it means less time dedicated to this one.
Beyond that, I just never felt I had any real identity on this site. Nobody knows me by personality, or what I contribute. People just know that I exist and that I upload these silly videos. And frankly I'm just not proud of that, and it's sunk in quite a bit lately. I definitely am proud of all I've contributed...but simply put, I just never established enough important friendships on this side of my life for it to feel important enough in the grand scheme. And don't get me wrong, I have made valuable friends during my time here...but in the grand scheme, I just don't think it's been enough.
That ended up being a more depressing write-up than anyone probably expected, but eh.

Princess Peach’s +Toads current voice actress Samantha Kelly voices Sunny Day in this version. Believe it or not the original Sunny Day was also voiced by Princess Peach and Toads previous voice actress Jen Taylor who also does Cortana from Halo franchise.

I never played this game when I was a kid, but this is still fun to watch.
Why not anything from 2007 to present? It's not like they have the same story as Putt-Putt: Pep's Birthday Surprise and Pajama Sam 4, so if they do exist, how can they not count at all if this game and prior are part of the same series? (Even the series title is part of the 2007-present games so I'm somewhat confused.)

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  7 лет назад +6

I've lightened up about the Yaga Jr. Adventures since those were still made before Humongous died. The 2007 onward Backyard games though are...something else entirely.
So, Humongous officially closed their doors in 2005 (the Backyard games were named a year ahead of their release date, which makes Football 2006 the very last game the original Humongous we all knew and loved ever made). The 2007 titles onward were made with absolutely none of the original supervision, and it *shows.* They turned all the characters into teenagers (half the original draw of the series was its relatable cast to the target audience. Aiming for an older crowd is frankly ridiculous when EA Sports games existed), and removed a fair amount of characters while adding some others that absolutely nobody liked (oh, and let's not forget how ugly the redesigns were). Oh, and they somehow thought removing Sunny Day was a good idea too. Speaking of which, from what little I've seen of Baseball 2007, the commentator guy in it is the most dull, robotic guy I've ever heard.
And with every game, they just tried less and less. The series was basically a cash cow for major sports leagues. There was no clear effort put into them. It was such a far cry from what the series had started as and a huge insult to anyone who ever was a fan of it when it was actually good. And it frustrates me that they're still making games. Just freaking die already, nobody likes the series as it is anymore.
And if you think I'm being stuck-up and exaggerating, even some of the *former Humongous staff* detest the post-2006 games. One of the artists even responded to a recent mobile app reboot with "This just made me throw up in my mouth a little. Nice to seem them flogging that dead horse." And frankly I'm not sure I can put it any better way.
So yeah, to me, only the games ever officially made by the original Humongous count as actual Backyard games. Anything after that is as good as non-existent to me.
