I know there are lots of people struggling far worse than I have and I’d like to try to help. It’d make my day if you joined me in contributing to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (even a few dollars would help). Your story is very similar to mine, I thought I was having blood sugar issues because I was dizzy and sick and having vision problems but turns out it was anxiety. I have always been an anxious person but these were the first real physical symptoms. Once I realized this after talking to my doctor, it was easy to gain control again. Thank you for sharing - hearing similar stories and sharing helps.

That’s not uncommon and fortunately you can work through it with some counseling as mentioned above. Compulsive and recurrent thoughts about things past can be debilitating regardless of how little importance the actual issue is. Free yourself from that and try counseling. Best of luck.

You and Matt have no idea how far your content actually reaches. And it's awesome. Every now and then, a few more people discover the liberating way of life that's minimalism. By clearing ourselves from redundant stuff and affairs, we gain time for what really matters: taking care of our home, body, soul and the people around us through rest, laughter, cooking, reading, conversations and utter relaxation. Thank you for helping us navigate to the right direction.

  • @Weirder_the_better

Thanks for doing this. I have been told for so long: “You’re such a worry wart.”... “You’re too sensitive.” ... “Just stop thinking about it.” People without chronic anxiety just can’t understand how it feels. To feel frozen in ice. To be a prisoner in your own mind and feel dread over things that will probably never happen.
For me, I had to stop saying it. Anxiety. Panic attacks. I had to stop making jokes about it in an attempt to normalize it. “I have crippling anxiety, haha”... For a long time, that was my only way of dealing with it, but all it did was make me label myself. I felt like I was worthless. I was nothing but a person controlled by what made her anxious. It was all I thought about. I would look back at things I’d done and think, “Wow I could never do that now... with my anxiety.”
It was my scapegoat for everything. “I can’t do it. It makes me anxious.” The more I did it, the harder it became to push myself to do anything at all. I didn’t want to leave the house for fear that someone would so much as look at me. But that is not all that I am. That is not what you will know me for. Even if anxiety was the reason, I had to stop saying it out loud. I had to own it and say, “I’m choosing not to do this thing because I let the fear win.” It wasn’t anxiety keeping me from living. It was my own self for letting it get that out of control. I never tried to fight it... so it continued to creep it’s way into every aspect of my life. I would dread going to bed because of the way my thoughts would haunt me once I closed my eyes. I would lay there and ruminate until there was an hour or two left to sleep.
I know this won’t work for everyone, so I’m not offering this as advice. I, personally, had to give myself some tough love in order to start facing things that terrified me. I remind myself during moments of anxiety or panic, “This is a bad moment. Not a bad day.” I started listening to guided meditation at bedtime. It gave me things to think about and took me away from myself.
To anyone who is struggling. You are strong enough. You are brave enough to take your life back. You can face what worries you and you will feel empowered. It won’t always be a victory, there are still bad days, but every moment you face it head-on makes you even stronger. I’m rooting for you.

BlackPommes🌴 well...it’s called mental illness for a reason. It should be treated the same as any physical illness. From what I’ve learned is that one area of health effects the other. For example, If you don’t take care of yourself mentally, you lose some wellness in your physical health and other areas like spiritual health. Take care of ALL the parts of you and DONT label one as more important than the other. Take care of yourself love :)

This is going to help a lot of people, including me! When we see a massive creator with tons of success, we automatically assume that their life & mental health is perfect (or at least much better than ours).
You being so open about your anxiety paints a very realistic picture: mental health has very little to do with materialistic success. Therefore, we should not strive for success at the risk of our health, because so many of us gain one and lose the other.
Thanks for the tips, and best of luck moving forward with less self-judgment & more acceptance!

What helped me with my anxiety was, just going outside and doing something that took me out of my house. Literally, sitting at Starbucks with the jazz playing helped me mentally calm down and just have a much better mental state.
Also, I would suggest that you write down somethings that trigger your anxiety. This is what helped me out as well!
Physical Activity: Swimming legit helped me deal with this and, a nice run on the treadmill.
Social Outlets: Sure, you can drink at home and have a great time. But, a nice vibe and a room full of awesome people may help also.
I really wish you the best with this! So many people deal with this and, they're too shame-filled to share how they truly feel with family and friends.

You may have heard this again and again but it is true. You Have to ACCEPT that anxiety is a part of you and that it's okay. Once you welcome it and make friends with it, the less you will be bothered by it and eventually and it wont bother you anymore. This is coming from a person who went through 3 years of bad anxiety and today I'm proud to say I have overcame it since then 2 years ago and it has become a friend, a part of me. 2:51 the sentence 'to feel normal again' is what i have want to achieve for a long time. i was actually productive, confident, not lazy, always wanting to finish my work. One day I dont know why i all of the sudden spent more time on my phone and i eventually forgot to do my homework. The big feeling of guilt for not doing homework, spending too much time on my phone made me worried alot. I was getting the fear of not gonna be succesful soccer player, when i was feeling myself, feeling normal, i have strong belief every single day that i will make it as a soccer player, and then the world just seems like upside down for me. I started to sleep late, train less, more time on my phone and i kept feeling guilty on everytime i spent on my phone and being lazy. I hope this video will eventually help me get back on track of who i was.

Omg that Hypochondriac reaction is so relatable.... It's just so easy to blame it on health. We're all perfectionists and we think our lives are either completely awesome or completely suck with no in-between, and we forget that there are transitioning phases and mild lows in which, as you pointed out, it's healthy to let go, stop chasing control in everything. Be disciplined in pursuit your of goals, but let the chips fall where they may on the less important things (which are kinda hard to identify when you're a perfectionist).
P.S. 4:10 that thing about you feeling good when laying on the ground, that has scientific background, because your shoulders are narrowed all the time while sitting, as well as your hips being behind your back, and even in bed your hips are curved down because of weight, and both of these are anterior pelvic tilt positions (apt). Both narrow shoulders and apt are considered of feminine anatomy, and something funny about your body is that very often it emulates in your hormones physiologically what you are doing physically. That's why when you lay on the ground, your shoulders fall wide naturally, your hips get in front of your spine (posterior pelvic tilt), and you're overall relaxed you get a surge of testosterone, and testosterone has amazing benefits for your body and mind. Even if he doesn't realise it, that's why Jordan Peterson's 1st rule for life: "Walk with proper posture" is so so so important and good.

Man this video hit me. Especially the part about the apartment. I moved out of my family’s house at the (oldish) age of 25 to my own place. Also, I was a first year teacher. I had so much frustration, fear, panic and anxiety over all the change. I began to resent my apartment. Unable to sleep throughout the night, hated the way it looked, spent hundreds of dollars on “decorating” things, constantly had company over to avoid being alone, going back for sleepovers at my parents house, staying in my bedroom with the door unlocked all day, eating unhealthy (to the point that I gained 20 pounds and the oh so pleasant acid reflux). I was in a downward spiral. I cheated on my loving boyfriend crushing his heart and mine(he forgave me), I finally told my family about being raped by a coworker while I was still getting my degree, I told my mom about the abuse I endured with my stepfather, and teaching was so hard and parents were so mean that I ended up being sick and in the hospital for spring break. I just watched two of your videos and have instantly subscribed. You’re content is unmatched on RUclips. Thank you for all the stories you tell. First of all, sorry for my english, I'm italian mothertongue and I speak and write english very rarely. I understand every single symptoms that you talked about in this video. I had a very hard time in 2012, a lot of pression at college, no friends, no money. I clearly remember the first panic attack as a huge amount of fear. Every single muscle of my body was contracted, I cannot breathe, my heart was pumping very fast. A nightmare. I've made a judgment to myself. I wanted to heal from this. But I can't beacause anxiety is a useful state of mind. It helps you at work, in sport, in love. We are just a little bit more sensible about anxiety. And in certain period, when you are stressed and in your mind there are a lot of things you're thinking about; anxiety gain power. Now I can identify anxiety and symptoms. I haven't no more panic attack (since 2/3 years ago). I learned how to control my anxiety. Sometimes it's hard but not impossible. Mindfullness, working out, talking with someone about what is going on; these are the keys for the success. But the most important, for myself, is focusing about your passions and interesting, and share this with someone who you love ( I found a friend that helps me a lot). Thank you very much for your video. You have the power to understand your anxiety and I'm sure that the worse period it's over. And one day, not so far from now, you're remembering this hard time saying "I've done it !".

I still do suffer from anxiety but it was FAR worse. There would be days where I couldn't bring myself to the idea of going to college. There was nothing to fear, but it literally destroyed me mentally. Little things like going for interviews, meeting new people and trying new things were a challenge for me. I don't know why I suddenly got it but it was awful. My friends thought I was being anti social where it was a completely different story. I couldn't bring myself to talk to them about it. When I did however to some specific friends and family it was like a massive burden off my shoulders. I began to read loads in topics I have a particular interest in such as Science, genetic, astrophysics/Quantum mechanics and technology in general. Reading helped, takes you away from the hell that's goes on in your brain. I also adopted new breathing patterns when I sensed that I was going to have another episode, breathe in for 4 seconds, breathe out after 5 seconds. This is the new way in which I keep my sanity whilst hell breaks loose in my mind. There would literally be days where I would literally throw up, it was awful. All left in the past though 🙂🙂

I started a new job about a year ago now and have slowly started drinking more and more coffee (espresso really) to be able to come to work and function. I started experiencing a lot of the symptoms of depersonalization/derealization and decided to give up my coffee to see if that helps. thebetatester800 this is a bit more extreme but that happened to me with smoking weed. I felt hella disconnected with people in general like everything I did was fabricated and remote. Then I dropped the habit for a month or so. I started drinking only water. And then I noticed a huge change in how I felt but my only problem left was my anxiety. But after the experience I could finally name what was bothering and it was anxiety. So I’m tryna work through that, and I feel like it gets easier the more you rationalize and accept your feelings.

I can't explain how many panic attacks i've not been able to control because of therapists telling me to 'just breathe' when I think a panic attack is coming. That's not how anxiety works, and for someone with anxiety to think that they are supposed to be able to 'just breathe' and everything will be ok, made me feel less normal than I already did. I never wanted to end my life, but I was always scared there would be a day where I snap and just do it. I definitely feel you, I would try to just express everything going on to a therapist just so that it's out in the world and off your chest, but you don't always have to take their advice.

Jessica Cunningham it seems the body-mind relationship goes both ways. When you panic, your heart rate increases. But if your heart rate increases through normal physical exertion, the mind reads that as a cue that a panic attack is under way and reacts accordingly. This has happened to me with an upset stomach or nausea. I have a bad digestive episode and I start to read that as panic, even if I know the cause. The association between body and mind are so inextricable that they’re almost impossible to separate or distinguish.

Thank you so much for talking about this. The physical elements of anxiety are often overlooked and if you are not super educated on the topic or have access to a professional the situation can get very scary very fast. So again, thank you so much for sharing this! I hope your anxiety is already and will contintue to get better ☀

This is amazing that you are talking about this, RIGHT NOW. I am terrified, for no reason that I can explain, of earthquakes. I live in a high rise tower in Las Vegas, NV (I realize how crazy this sounds, but this was a barrier I thought would put me out of my comfort zone and overcome my fear). I was not home for the 6.4 earthquake on the 4th of July that made it to Las Vegas from Ridgecrest. I happened to be out of town. But I did get home in time (20 minutes or so) to experiment the 7.1 earthquake on July 5th. I was home. In my apartment. On the 23rd floor. It lasted for 45-50 seconds. I headed downstairs as soon as it felt safe to move, sat in the lobby for 45 minutes until I had the courage to go back upstairs. The after-shock came as quickly as I plugged my phone in. As the cable swung back and forth I thought to myself, "This serious isn't happening." 5.4 magnitude. 10-15 for this one. Everything moving stuff falling from the walls. Pure torture for me. Luckily my girlfriend is a stronger person than myself and kept calm, I didn't stay at home that night. I slept on the floor at my business. It has been a battle to feel comfortable at home with constant vertigo phases that I can't stop. Constantly checking if fluids are shaking, if wires are swinging. I can't for the life of me feel comfortable at home anymore. Just hearing you mention that vertigo is a sign of anxiety feels 100x better but as you say, it doesn't cure the problem. I am fortunate enough to run my own business and have free hours throughout the day, but still have clients that need projects completed. For these out hours, I force myself to sit at home, in the same spot where "it all happened" to try to break this feeling. It has been 4 days now and the vertigo doesn't seem to want to subside. I wake up every hour in the middle of the night for what seems like no reason, but my mind tells me that it's because the building is moving again. I seriously contemplate selling my home and moving back into a house (closer to the ground.) It just feels so irrational to do something like that, it makes me feel absolutely crazy. I thank you for this video. I've been fighting anxiety my whole life and this is the second spell of "extreme anxiety" that I've experienced. I frequently experience chest pains (what I can only imagine a heart attack feels like. It's awful). So this is just another step that feels like the wrong way, I just worry that things will get worse. But there is comfort in knowing "I'm not the only one" and this will help me to push through. I do believe things will get better. Back to the old way, I just hope it isn't months or even years for that to happen. Thank you for opening up and sharing your experience with this monster we call "anxiety."

I suffer from depression and anxiety but the depression at least for the moment has been left behind and anxiety has still keep pushing some times. For days or longer I do not know that it has returned until later, just like you , I dance to "get rid of" that and be in a more relaxed mood, that was inspired by Grey's Anatomy because they danced in sad moments, it also helps me to walk, listen to certain types of music, I like to drink a lot of water, as well as touch my violin and running, I think maybe this come back because I keep pushing my emotions on me and I have to learn how to express myself more, that's why all the above things work because they let me express myself. Thank you for your great content.

My meditation teacher (Tara Brach) taught me the following: when anxiety becomes physically debilitating:
    Pause,
do a body sensation scan, toes to head,
Say “I have room for these thoughts and sensations, they’ll be gone soon”.
This will open the door to more thoughts, say “this too, I have room... this too” as they arise
**kicker: try to make the physical sensations bigger, like taking a deeper breath of stinky air, defy the sensations, grow them
This sounds nuts, but it works for me. I can only liken it to popping a pimple.

An absolutely beautiful video, Matt. The honesty and genuineness of your videos has always made me feel so welcomed on your channel, and videos as personal as this only increase it. The ending about learning to accept it and to work through it is truly inspiring. Thank you.

My doctor explained that anxiety is like a lot of dots outside of a circle. To get it back in the circle, you sometimes need medication for a sort period. Even if it’s natural medication. After handle (or not handle) it for a couple of months, I decided to take medication. I haven’t regretted of it, so far. I realized that after trying everything, or nothing, there was no other way to get better. Now I can tell that I almost feel myself again. I’m close. Hope you get better soon. Best, Karen

LISTEN, THE DANCING WORKS!! I discovered this at the beginning of the year when I was working through emotions around a break-up with my now ex-boyfriend. For me, it was a way to use all the emotions I was feeling. no matter how terrible and awful, to create something beautiful through movement. A chance to create anything at all when I was being consumed by all I was feeling. It was through creation that I rebuilt parts of myself I had lost or let go of.

Cognitive Behavioural therapy was probably the best thing I went through. I have tried everything else, and I could not get through it without CBT.

What baffles me about anxiety, is that each time it hits me, i logically know that im just exagerating , that i have been here before and i survived just fine, that things doesnt turn out to be so terrible like you imagine it, yet still it gets me each time . I swear as you were sayin that i was saying to myself just accept it, that was exactly what i said to myself yesterday when i was i the mids of it, it is what it is , see things as they are, that helps alot , thnx for sharing this video.

I don't know if this will help anyone, but the way I finally overcame my anxiety was to stop judging myself for it. It took years to realize that whenever it did hit, I would have a reaction of "this shouldn't be happening" or "I should be more put together than this". Eventually I got to the point that when it would hit, I would have a reaction of "this is my anxiety, I know I hate it, but it will pass, and I'm going to be ok". It took years of practice but how we treat ourselves makes a big difference. I don't avoid it now, I accept it as part of myself and as a warning sign that I need to look at some part of my life or that I've let someone else take up a bit too much of my mental space. Great video.

I know very well your struggle. Breathing is easier when you lie down (specially if you are in a middle of an anxiety crisis or a panic attack) I learned that recently from the Reiky community. Love your channel. Kisses and hugs from Caracas, Venezuela
