Nice video. I'm making these right now as bridesmaids gifts so of course I want to make sure they're legit and last forever. I got my white mugs at Walmart. Walmart didn't have the oil-based sharpies so I went to Michael's and I asked one of the girls there about this project and she said the oil-based sharpie doesn't work as well as an actual ceramic oil-based paint marker and she said lots of people have come in saying even the oil-based sharpie didn't hold up in the long run. So I got the ceramic oil-based paint markers instead. The brand is "DecoArt" and on the package it says they're meant for glass, tile, and glazed ceramics (aka mugs). Another thing I just thought of tonight is if there's a way to protect the mug even more by spraying a clear glossy acrylic sealant over it and sure enough I did find an article on Google about this. Hope this helps someone! I think these steps will ensure success.
Hi Carla! may you please tell me what ''clear glossy acrylic sealant'' did you use? I see your comment is from 4 yrs ago but you made that for bridesmaids gifts so it was special moment and maybe you still remember haha. I'm starting a little project and I wanna make sure my art lasts! I would appreciate it! :)
Just a few weeks ago I started designing my own mugs and in my research the oil based sharpies were used the most, were most successful in lasting longer, able to be put in the dishwasher and microwave. This was a great tutorial. It's a blast!
You're AMAZING! I was thinking about DIYing mugs for Christmas gifts and a video this year. Would have been crap presents without this video haha thank you :)
I was skeptical about this project too. My mom wanted to do this project as Christmas gifts for all her siblings (she has 10 of them) and now I know that she'll need the oil based Sharpie instead of the regular Sharpies. Thank you so much for this video!
I'm actually glad i watched this before i started making my own because i was about to make the DIY sharpie mug as a christmas gift and now that i see the normal sharpie failed i need to get the oil based one. Thanks for doing this video it helped me a lot :)
Thank you for changing the most important variables of this experiment (the mugs and the sharpies) because most people just try it once, with one mug type and one sharpie type, then either give it a pass or fail. You, my friend, have stuck to the scientific method and did the world much good. You also gave it a full test (doing both dishwasher washing and handwash). My only question now is how long do the oil-based sharpie mugs hold after MULTIPLE washes. Guess that's something I'll have to find out :)
I can't guarantee that because I haven't tried a ton of different mugs, but yes - that seems to be the case. (After doing a lot of research on this, it seems that cheaper mugs are the best to use because they have less of a glaze on them so it's easier for the design to penetrate the surface. That might be getting too technical but basically the point is -- get a cheap mug!)
Thanks for the heads up! I was able to find mine at a local craft store but had trouble finding any in places like Walmart. Ordering online is probably the best bet!
I really like this video and the whole idea behind the Pinterest Truth or Fail! One thing I thought I'd mention though is even the oil-based sharpies don't hold up in the long run. Mine, too, held up for the first couple rounds through the dishwasher, but by the fifth or sixth time, the ink was starting to fade. Not entirely sure about handwashing, but still, I wouldn't recommend this project as a gift to anyone else.
Since I didn't test the difference b/w 1 and 2 layers, I'm not exactly sure. I'd imagine that it would still work BUT I always like making sure that something will be durable and since it didn't take longer than a minute or two to go over the original design, I just did it to be sure.
just observed how you scrubbed the special sharpie mugs, seems that you scrubbed lightly. i can tell by the way you hold the scrubbing brush. 3:22 vs 3:29:(
This video is fantastic! I have a question: you put the mugs into the oven. Your mugs didn't indicate on the bottom if they were oven safe. Does it matter what kind of mug you use? I bought some porcelain mugs from Walmart that state that they're microwave and freezer safe, but they don't say that they're oven safe. I'm assuming that they are, but I'm worried about putting them in the oven. I just wanted to know your thoughts on that. Thanks!
really awesome series idea. I was thinking about doing something like this, but since I'm a cooking channel, I was going to test out the food tips that Pinterest gives. simpleDIYs
I watched a few from different ppl but your video was by far best most explanatory and exactly what i wanted to know which would work best. Great job!!! Impressive. Thumbs up.
Lol sorry for all of the questions but people said to cook the mug for 30 minutes so do you start that timer while it is heating up with the oven or do you start it after the oven has fully heated up? thanks so much! :)
Thank you for doing this awesome test! I'm about to try this with a sculptural cocktail mug I recently was able to ask the artist to sign so this video was incredibly helpful.
Every other tutorial I've seen on this topic says DO NOT wash in a dishwasher but hand wash ONLY as Kali Stanland said below! It was, however, an interesting experiment. Thanks for doing it and posting the results.
You have no idea how much I appreciate this video... I am just about to start crafting for real (to sell painted mugs) and I had just seen another video on this topic which she had used:: Deco Color Foil Marker and (same brand) glass paint for ceramics... The oil based pens were better... I always bake my cups at 350* for 30 min. Thank YOU so much for sharing this video/tutorial... great job.
:) Very Good. Just starting this project and you answered my questions saving me all the trial and error. I had a feeling the oil based sharpie was necessary.
Thanks for sharing this! This was EXACTLY what I wanted to know. I did some regular Sharpie decorated mugs last year but realized they weren't holding up well so I didn't give them out as gifts. I now have the oil based Sharpies so I can give it another go this year. I also like that you tried out different mugs because I was wondering about that, too. Thanks again.
The only DIY article I’ve read, before I found this video, was from popsugar.com. In addition to recommending the oil-based marker (though I agree-Why not get the DecorArt ones designed for such a purpose?), she also lists in her instruction steps letting the ink dry for several hours before putting the mugs in the oven. Does this step matter? Who knows? But just wanted to add that.
Thank you so much for doing this!!!!!! I have been wanting to do this for a while and didn't want to test what works!!!! You tested everything I needed to know the answer to and you gained a subscriber!
Don't worry, just avoid car/jet washes and use a cloth or something soft instead because in the dishwasher I suppose everything's submerged in water (idk because I don't have one) and probably put under extreme pressure like a jet wash. Or you could search for some type of sealer that could seal in your design. I'm not sure if there's such thing though :)
i love the calm voice in these videos so much? and i like the theme of testing pins for whether theyre doable, which threadbanger does too, but theyre so aggressive and weird about it and not very thorough, unlike these videos. ♥
Thanks for mentioning that the mugs need to be put in the oven before you heat it up and leave them to cool in there after as well. This will make a world of difference when I try this out myself ✨
thanks a lot for this video. i was out n about today searching for oil paint sharpies for my xmas gift and found them no where. almost decided to use regular sharpie and so glad i didn't.
What if you already baked it and drew over it again cause the color came off and you just filled it in (oil based sharpie) and baked it again. Would it mess it up?
Thank you for doing this! I wanted to do a project like this on a full tea set but I really didn't want to waste Sharpie ink or my time doing something that wouldn't last! :) It helps a ton to have the information you provided!
Thank you so much. I tried the regular perm sharpies on the dollar store plates. They were somewhat streaky. I baked at 350 for 30 minutes. Colors changed and they were not as vibrant. I will get some oil based and see how that works. I really love the idea but I want it to be a lasting project. Thanks Bunches~
most sites and videos say to wait 72 hrs before using them and you have to hand wash them or use the soft side of a sponge. you can also buy sealing spray to have them last longer

Carla Turner was wondering about a sealer coat. Thanks for the tests.
I didn't understand anything what the video talks about help me plz
The oil base sharpie in Walmart are in the hand craft section. That's where I got mine.
Hi Carla! may you please tell me what ''clear glossy acrylic sealant'' did you use? I see your comment is from 4 yrs ago but you made that for bridesmaids gifts so it was special moment and maybe you still remember haha. I'm starting a little project and I wanna make sure my art lasts! I would appreciate it! :)
Carla Alexander I’m actually using this idea for my bridesmaids gifts as well!!
If you haven't seen Episode 1 & 2 of this series, check out the playlist. Will definitely be filming an Episode 4 soon! :) Stay tuned.
I was skeptical about this project too. My mom wanted to do this project as Christmas gifts for all her siblings (she has 10 of them) and now I know that she'll need the oil based Sharpie instead of the regular Sharpies.
Thank you so much for this video!
if im doing 2 mugs can i bake them both at the same time?
I'm actually glad i watched this before i started making my own because i was about to make the DIY sharpie mug as a christmas gift and now that i see the normal sharpie failed i need to get the oil based one. Thanks for doing this video it helped me a lot :)

Very nice.. can I bake and use these on tiles ? I'm going to make a coster
I can't guarantee that because I haven't tried a ton of different mugs, but yes - that seems to be the case. I've gotten a few requests for tinted mason jars so I'll definitely try to come up with a DIY mason jar tutorial soon.
I know that you can for sure find them online. I'd guess that Hobby Lobby might have them or any other specialty craft stores in your area.
I love the Dollar store mug style. Thank you for doing the demo with both types of markers.
Thanks for the heads up! I was able to find mine at a local craft store but had trouble finding any in places like Walmart. Ordering online is probably the best bet!

I've seen both of those! And I think both are awesome. Will definitely try to pick at least one of those to do soon.
Since I didn't test the difference b/w 1 and 2 layers, I'm not exactly sure. I'd imagine that it would still work BUT I always like making sure that something will be durable and since it didn't take longer than a minute or two to go over the original design, I just did it to be sure.
Great comparison. Did you happen to try colored oil based markers? They changed colors for me.
i love the twisty handle, dollar store, huh, who knew
Just curious... What type of cup did you use? Where they ceramic?
Loved the video thanks!!
just observed how you scrubbed the special sharpie mugs, seems that you scrubbed lightly. i can tell by the way you hold the scrubbing brush. 3:22 vs 3:29:(
PJ Sinohin I noticed that too
Yeah, it looks like she barely grazed it.
true
She’s definitely being paid off by the big oil sharpie industry.
Do i have to use an oil based sharpie... Can i use a regular dollar store oil based marker?
Super cool! Can this damage an oven in anyway? Just want to be a little careful before I try it for myself.
I've definitely seen that pin before. I'll look into it.
This video is fantastic! I have a question: you put the mugs into the oven. Your mugs didn't indicate on the bottom if they were oven safe. Does it matter what kind of mug you use? What a great idea for a video series! Can't wait for #4!
Great video! have you tried the sharpies who do not need the passage in the oven ?
really awesome series idea. I was thinking about doing something like this, but since I'm a cooking channel, I was going to test out the food tips that Pinterest gives. simpleDIYs
Really nice dollar store mugs😉 The whole curve thing is gorgeous!! 👏
I watched a few from different ppl but your video was by far best most explanatory and exactly what i wanted to know which would work best. Great job!!! Impressive. Thumbs up.
this is awesome... im going to do this for my family for christmas. do you know where i might be able to find the oil based sharpie?
Hi, where can you buy the letters that you used for templates please? Great project Thankyou
Thank you for clearing that up for everyone! Common confusion for many DIYS
i'm not sure if I missed it but where were you able to find the oil based paint sharpie?
Lol sorry for all of the questions but people said to cook the mug for 30 minutes so do you start that timer while it is heating up with the oven or do you start it after the oven has fully heated up? thanks so much! :)
Thank you for doing this awesome test! I'm about to try this with a sculptural cocktail mug I recently was able to ask the artist to sign so this video was incredibly helpful.
I love your ideas !!! Simple and fun :)
will the sharpie color adhere OK if there is sticky material under the stencil?
Every other tutorial I've seen on this topic says DO NOT wash in a dishwasher but hand wash ONLY as Kali Stanland said below! It was, however, an interesting experiment. Thanks for doing it and posting the results.
Do you think using a regular sharpie and coating with dishwasher safe mod podge would work??
Love these pintrest truth or fail videos! Keep it up!
should i use a special mug or anyone can be used for this?
PLEASE ANSWER!
did you wait 24 hours to bake them or bake them right away? another video said to leave them for 24 hours first
I am curious. If you do this with a microwave safe mug will the sharpie mark still be in tact?
is there an alternative step for putting the mugs in the oven? our oven is broken and I can't use it but i really wanna try this. please reply.
You have no idea how much I appreciate
this video... I am just about to start crafting for

I'm glad you found it helpful! Good luck with your next round of mugs!
simpleDIYs i just made the mugs with the normal sharpie and thought this could be a great gift for my mom for christmas. Now I see that it is a mess:(
Dieverdog hi Jim
They were letter stickers from Michael's. The brand is "Momenta." Good luck!
Where did you get the letter stencils? They're awesome. Great christmas DIY gift I might do! :)
Was wondering where you got your sticker letters? I really like the font, size and that it's not paper thin, so it's easy to trace around.
The faded letters on the fail ones actually look good! Kinda distressed and grungy. Loved this!
Do u have to clean the mug because I already put the design on?!
is two layers of oil sharpie necessary or would it work with one?
do you think it would work with any oil-based marker?
Oh no! Maybe try to get your hands on an oil based sharpie and try to go over the design?
Really glad that I saw this, I was planning to make a bunch as gifts.
I like ur video style and ur voice is soothing and easy to listen to. Good stuff.
absolutely excellent video. easy to understand and answered all my questions regarding making these. Great job!

I posted a wire bow ring tutorial awhile back. You can find it in the jewelry playlist!
Do you think a permeant marker will work ?
And I absolutely love making these kinds of videos!
if you were to use dishwasher safe mod podge, should you put it on before or after you bake it?
Can I use a regular marker because I can't find Sharpies anywhere in Croatia?
Have you tried Amazon for any oil makers? :(
Thank you so much for doing this!!!!!! I have been wanting to do this for a while and didn't want to test what works!!!! You tested everything I needed to know the answer to and you gained a subscriber!
Is the oil based still intact? If so these could make such easy, awesome gifts or just make your own personalized mug? Who knows. Awesome either way!
Do you have to have a plain mug?
Were the mugs oven safe? I'm having a really hard time finding oven safe mugs anywhere especially the Dollar Store
Of course!
Where can you find an Oil based sharpie? Could Walmart work or no?
We really like these types of videos!
Please do more like this
Can I use a paint marker instead of a sharpie??
This is bad news for my sharpie painted car.
Finally a video that tests them properly instead of claiming to be "dishwasher safe" without actually putting them in the dishwasher. Kudos!
hi, did you extra fine, fine, or medium point?
i love the calm voice in these videos so much? and i like the theme of testing pins for whether theyre doable, which threadbanger does too, but theyre so aggressive and weird about it and not very thorough, unlike these videos. ♥
For sure!
That's a good way to look at it!
Thank you for sharing!! I just purchased a few mugs and normal Sharpies. Now I know I need to get oil based Sharpies. Thanks again!
How long do you let the sharpie dry?
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT WHEN YOU MAKE THESE KINDS OF VIDEOS
Thanks for mentioning that the mugs need to be put in the oven before you heat it up and leave them to cool in there after as well. This will make a world of difference when I try this out myself ✨
Can you use a fine water resistant/fade resistant sharpie if no where sells the oil based?
Mine didn't work even though I followed all those steps do u know why and what can I do to solve it?
I'll definitely do a search for that one!
Does it work with water-based sharpies?
thanks a lot for this video. i was out n about today searching for oil paint sharpies for my xmas gift and found them no where. almost decided to use regular sharpie and so glad i didn't.
If you covered it with clear modge podge after the baking, do you think that would help?
You know, I'm honestly not sure how that would work. I usually use Mod Podge as an adhesive so I don't know how well it seals in ink.
What if you already baked it and drew over it again cause the color came off and you just filled it in (oil based sharpie) and baked it again. Would it mess it up?
Can i use microwave instead of oven?
Thank you for doing this! I wanted to do a project like this on a full tea set but I really didn't want to waste Sharpie ink or my time doing something that wouldn't last! :) It helps a ton to have the information you provided!
I know this vid is very old but can you tell me where you got the letter stencils?
That was a great video =) Thank you! I was wondering about that project with the sharpies and coffee mugs =)
Thanks Bunches~
try it with the new fade resistant sharpies!!
most sites and videos say to wait 72 hrs before using them and you have to hand wash them or use the soft side of a sponge. you can also buy sealing spray to have them last longer
How are the J & C mugs holding up? It has been a while since you posted the video.
:)
Do you have a video where you test sharpies on glass? (ex. wine glasses?)
can I use alcohol based markers and then apply laquers?
