I have used both regular Sharpies and also the oil-based paint Sharpies. some things to be aware of. If you have any finger oils on the cup, the paints will not adhere (absorb) After washing the cup and rinsing well, use alcohol to wipe the area you will be tangling thoroughly!. (2) Avoid depositing more finger oils on the cup by using cotton gloves when handling. (3) I DOUBLE BAKE the cups. first time bring oven and cup to 425 Degrees F and bake for 30 minutes, then turn off oven and let cups and oven cool naturally. Reset oven to 450 degrees F and let oven and cup warm up together. Let bake for 45 minutes. Turn oven off and let both cool naturally.
When done this way, the cups have stood up to dishwashers at the local Senior Center for 6 months of use, so far. Using this method, sometimes the Sharpie metallic paints will undergo changes. Example: the Rose gold will change to plain gold metallic.
Mildred Galliher Thanks for your suggestions Mildred, I'm sure they'll help some people out :)
can I use any colors?
like red..blue..green..silver..gold
Sylvia Taylor I believe so
Hi :) Can this be done on glasses as well, or just mugs? Thank you :)
Mildred Galliher which sharpies do you think work better
I made one using a dark purple sharpie and it faded to a nice light purple. My has lasted at least over 20 washes and still going strong. Thanks so much for this tutorial. It is absolutely spot on
Dollor store mugs are cheap but still good mugs, thin glaze too.
*Datrix* Absolutely!
I am so glad i saw this before i tried the sharpie mug
same! :)
Important tip: Oil based sharpies work better. They cost a bit more but it's worth it.
Thank you, this is very helpful, very clear and precise😁 will be certainly trying this, I luv drawing my own original designs, mug is a perfect gift idea 👍
Also just to solve all these 220°C to F. It is 428°F for 220°C. So set it to 430 if your oven doesn't go by the ones.
Yep, what Jessica said :)
Thank you
Thank you! You saved me from googling it lol
oil based sharpie markers are the best to use, dont forget to use some rubbing alcohol on the mug then letting it dry again before drawing, then finish everything off with a layer or two of some mod podge to create a protective coat so that you cant scratch anything off
Shelby Cook do you put the mod podge on before or after you bake it
put the mod podge on after you bake it, i put 2-3 coats on them and it turned out great. Make sure not to put any on the upper rim where you'd put your lips, leave an inch of room for that across the entire cup or else youd get sick from toxins.
Shelby Cook
what if we dont have oven? what else can we use
what mod podge do you use? Is there one specifically for glassware/stoneware?
what kind of mod podge did you use?
I would also suggest that instead of using regular sharpies, to use oil-based paint marker sharpies. I baked mine with the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes and it works fine. It's also dishwasher safe! :)
THANK YOU! I am going to do these mugs for Christmas and I wanna make sure there 100% good, useable, and the sharpie will stay on.
Super excited! I'm making a pair of mugs for my one year anniversary for my boyfriend. I'm putting all our favorite quotes and sayings on them. He'll get one, I'll get the other; like a his and hers thing.
Anna Kay Super cute. How did they turn out!?
They turned out pretty awesome, actually. He really enjoyed them. I stuffed them with mini snickers and twix bars so it was extra awesome, haha.
Lovely listening to you and thinking 'That accent... She must be a Kiwi!'
Thank you for the tips, will have a go!
I have a black Prismacolor brush marker & gave a shot at using that instead of the sharpie on one of the mugs I did. It stayed black instead of going dark brown. I'm not sure if other colors of Prismas would be effected by the heat or not.
Followed the directions, including cleaning the mug before painting with alcohol, used Sharpie Oil markers, bake @ HIGH temp, etc. Mugs looked great going into the oven, but when cooled & removed - the colors had almost all changed. Red was vibrant going in, came out almost black. Navy blue came out brown, turquoise became light brown - only black emerged as it went in.
I wish I knew what I did wrong, or if anyone else has had this disappointing experience and figured out how to fix it. Lots of hours seemingly down the tube....
The video mentioned the colors would change. You did nothing wrong. That's just what happens when you heat them. You might want to test the colors on a similar surface before using on your project so you know how they will turn out and can plan accordingly.
Hi there trying to make one here though...can we put in microwave or simply an oven heat is a must.....thx in advance
Thank you very much for all these tips. I am going to make Sharpie mugs as a gift for Christmas to my friends and I have seen the mugs done with ceramic paint but I think its a lot more convenient for me to do it in sharpie.
Great idea Jessica, they'll love that you've put your time and effort into their gifts x
Thank you so much! My other sharpie mugs were failing after the first wash and now I know why! I will definitely try your method!
Larissalove55 That's great Larissa, I have a mother mug decorating video coming out next month too :)
Thanks so much for your video!! I'm making mugs as Christmas presents and this really helped a ton!!!
I bought some mugs from ASDA for £4, used a regular black sharpie and baked for 25 minutes at 150 degrees Celsius, leaving them to cool completely with the oven door cracked open slowly. So far the mugs seem fine, no fade in colour after baking. When I was designing I wiped down the surface with some weak salicylate acid (actually in my face cleanser) and tried to avoid touching it afterwards. No cracks, haven't tried washing them yet but I'd leave them for a few days before first use! Hope this helps someone
Great tips on your video. I have used the sharpie oil based paint pens. My designs are on mugs and wine glasses which I use both sharpies and enamel paints. I follow the baking instructions for the paints, and after baking I have found the sharpie pens have faded. I also apply a clear glaze for added durability and the sharpie pen bleed. Do you have any recommendation on glazes that won't make the sharpie pens bleed. Thanks for your help. Elaine
how long will this last for
Would a regular black sharpie work to?
I have microwave not OTG then what should I do to prevent fire. Should I use water to prevent fire?
Glad I saw this before I give this a try!
I plan to do this with my friend (you know, two mugs with the classic long-distance best friends quote) some time.
Aw, thanks Elisa! Spread the word! x
can i use normal permanent marker?
what do u mean ny letting it heat up with the oven? like putting it in the oven before the timer goes off? if so do u start the 30mins for the mugs then or after the timer for the warming of the oven goes off???? Sorry this might be confusing! :)
Don't preheat the oven before putting the mugs in. Let the mugs heat as the temperature rises. If not the mugs might break from the sudden heat change. Same goes for removing them from the oven. Let them cool in the oven.
put the mug in, and then preheat the oven while the mug is already in
What happens if you re-bake it? Will it possibly brake? I baked it once but the sharpie just scratched off. It didn't come off with water, but when lightly scratched it just comes off. Can I re-bake it?
the sharpie has to be oil based
that happened to me too and I did it with oil based paint. I baked it twice at 425 but it did not work :/
Great ideas! Thanks. I found really cheap and cute mugs at the Dollar Tree.
Great tip Danielle - hope people read that one :)
I used the Oil Based sharpies and only had to apply one coat. The mugs came out great and are not washing away.
+Meredith McGee well where do you buy oil ones? mine don't say anything on?
+Caleb kendyl Ya most of the time when they say Sharpie Mugs they are referring to the oil paint permanent type of sharpie. I had to go looking for them, but you can get the at Michaels for a little under $20.00 for a pack of 4 colors... so they are more expensive then normal Sharpies, but thats because they are not Permanent Markers, they are Paint Markers. They come in Water color and Oil.. but so far the oil works best to stay on glass for myself. You can also buy them online at places like Amazon and craft places. But if you are still not sure what I mean check out sharpie.com and according to Amazon they are called Sharpie Oil-Based Paint Markers....
www.amazon.com/Sharpie-Oil-Based-Markers-Assorted-1770459/dp/B003VQ9M04/ref=as_sl_pc_tf_til?tag=thecozoldfar-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=LCLJVKSJL7OC3JBG&creativeASIN=B003VQ9M04
I hope this helps...
Thanks for the link. I just ordered the oil based metallic markers. Lets see how they turn out. THANKS!
Hi Kate, hard to tell really. The mug side of things can be a bit hit and miss. If it is too shiny, it means it has a heavy glaze and your sharpie may not stay.... Thanks for watching. Hope you give it a try. If it doesn't work, you can scrub it off and still use the mug :)
Hey i have a single mug that i can bear to part with but it is a matt mug ,would it work?and also we dont get sharpies here so could i use an ordinary thin permanent matker?!
Hi, will the colours definitely not fade in the oven if you put two coats of sharpies?
Thank you!! :333
Tanks for the tips. It's in the oven, so lets just see.
I used both brand name and no name sharpies. Fingers crossed
+teenerqm How did it go?
This vid helped me so much I made a Mother's Day mug thanx.
She would of loved that Kaya! Thanks for watching :)
It worked!! Thank you!
thx for the video. will there be significant colour change when I bake the cups? i have useda variety of colors using the oil based sharpie paint markers such as pink, blue, purple, red and yellow. also would u recommend using a water based varnish as extra protection after baking?
What is 220c in Fahrenheit? And also how long should we bake the mugs for if we let it heat up with the oven because other videos said to preheat and put in the oven for a certain time.
Great video but I got a question if I'm only tracing the image on the glass and then I paint the image can I put it in the oven?
I’m trying to make a mug for Father’s Day and I’m kind of in a rush!!! Can you use Permanent markers or do you have to use the oil based sharpies??!!!
will this work for sharpie coasters? have you tried alcohol inks for coasters and if so can they be baked at the same temp? than you
Would this work for other colors as well, and would you be able to use metallic colored sharpies?
hi sorry if you already got this question, is it save for plate surface? I mean is it safe for eating/drinking purpose??
Do you have to use sharpies or will any oil based paint markers work
Do you have to have a white mug? Do you have to use a sharpie? I have many sharpies but also have a more heavy duty marker, just wondering if it would have the same result, the marker is a calligraphy pure black marker
I am baking my mugs right now.... I am nervous 😁😁😁. .. I am following your directions step by step.... Let's wait for the final result. ;)
How'd they turn out?
Ohh Amazing! I loved them and all my guests loved them too. I made them for my wedding gift which was very intimate and small. Thank you so much!!! 😄
+Carol Vzla C
did you use regular or oil based sharpies? Thanks. Did you bake at the 220-230?
I actually used DecoArt glass paint marker. I placed them in the oven for 30 min (375 ° F) after a year my mugs are still cute and perfect.
can you do this on colored mug? I have red mugs and was wondering if it would affect the outcome
Jami olesh I don't think there will be a problem , but pay attention to how your sharpie color might mix with the red. (blue might turn purplish)
Can I use a colored ceramic cups or the color will fade if I put it in an oven? Thanks!
I totally love how you explained every details in this video and it is absolutely SUPER DUPER useful but I have a small problem, can I microwave my mug instead? Because the label stated not to place it in the oven. What should I do?
You can't heat-treat the decoration in a microwave. If you don't have an oven, borrow one or do something else with the mug.
Great! Let's hope you find that perfect mug aye! Thanks for watching x
loved the tutorial and it has helped with my coffee mugs idea for my bridesmaids. I will let you know how they turn out.
howd they turn out?
Echo Bug they turned out really cute but I am not able to draw very well so mine were super simple!
@@mrs.thomas8077 im sure they looked great the way they are, and thank you
Very helpful, thank you.
I heard that using and oil based paint sharpie works best and stays on through even vigorous washes! Hope that helps in the future maybe you could try it out! :)
Really helpful video! I got a cute $2 mug from target and I will try it tomorrow :)
Maggie Moffat did it work for you, out of curiosity? I am about to attempt mine and I’m a bit nervous😹
can you suggest where to get the mugs from? somewhere online if possible? and what pen to use?
This has been extremely helpful and I love your work. My issue today is that I am wanting to paint these AMAZING clear glass soup mugs I found at a local dollar store. I've not yet used the markers on clear glass, just the little cheaper ceramic. I do let each color dry before applying second coat, and in addition let sit to cure for 24 hours before baking. But my question is, is the baking step going to work as well for the clear glass? Any tutorials I've watched thus far from others don't use this step, just paint, let dry and hand wash. Just feel like this would be a good step to add.
Use oil based pain markers. Less colour fade. I have had no dramas with them.
When do you use the decoupage
so how long does it stay in the oven by the way loved the video thank you !
Thanks for the tips! I was wondering how and why it can go wrong lol.. Yay! xo
can u use the convection ovens or like i guess u could call them mini ovens?
Yeeaah, this tutorial is fantastic! I think I'm going to do it :)
Thank u very helpful 😊👍
Love the tips on this video!
Literally sooo HELPFUL! THANK YOU!! :DD
I am searching for an extra fine ceramic marker pen. Any ideas.
I've already bought a mug, it is thick and shines
(I haven't bought it by myself)
Will that work ? :x
If you want something that will REALLY adhere to plastic, ceramic, glass or metal try NAIL POLISH.All nail polishes sold (in Canada at least) are free of harmfull chemicals. However, you need GOOD Ventillation when painting with nail polish because it's highly flamable. Also I dont think the nail polish will be free of cracks if you wash it.Nail polish (and permanent markers) are best used on artworks (like decorative plates) that are not used for actually drinking or eating off of.
Can I try it in an oven toaster? It might bake it too but is it safe ?
hey I don't have a convection oven will it still work
Corelle mugs should work fine right?
Did you try oil based sharpies? I heard those work well and want to get the best results
This helped a lot, thank you!!!!
I wonder if putting a ceramic glaze over the Sharpie would help? Or does a kitchen oven get hot enough for that?
I wonder if you could use dishwasher safe mode podge.
Where can you buy the oil base sharpie markers
I have a convection microwave oven. I want to make it. but don't know how to bake it in convection microwave. please help me. how much temperature will it need?
Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I know you said that other colours besides black would fade after being in the oven. But would it fade by a lot if I had did several layers of the colour (e.g. the colour red changes completely to another colour like yellow)?
You may find you end up with a darker shade of brown, rather than a lighter one ;)
StyleNovice oh okay. thanks!
Hi, thank's for the tips! I use an acrylic spray to seal after oven and it works, my mug seems perfect! But i have a doubt... although i'm very careful and don't put spray where the lips touch and inside the mug, i don't know if it's dangerous. What do you think? Did you use it too or just use the oven? Thank you
Ana Rita Cardoso Hi Ana, I only used the oven, so setting spray afterwards. Unless you are using a ceramic specific spray, I would be careful :)
Thanks for the tips! I was wondering, when you bake the mugs, will it end up emitting an odor because of the heating of the ink?
Roshel1102 yeah when i do mine they usually create a bad odor while baking but that just means its baking right into the glaze
I love this video it helpped so much thanks :)
Very welcome Patricia, thanks for watching x
ASDA sells them for 65p and the mug with the sharpie has lasted me one month and counting!
(ASDA is the U.K version of walmart).
+Mátyás Hale Asda sells the oil based Sharpies for 65p or the mug for 65p?
the mug
Asda is not the uk based version of Walmart, it is just a supermarket
+AllThingsSquare it literally Is called Asda walmart. ...
@@lydiah6857 Asda most definitely is the UK version of Walmart.
I used regular perm sharpies. I baked at 350 for 30 minutes. My colors changed a bit during the process. They were not vibrant anymore and / or they changed colors all together. Is this due to using the regular perm sharpies?
Could you use some sandpaper or nail file to scruff up outside on places where you are going to paint??
Judy Obrien Hi Judy, I don't know why you would need to? I wouldn't recommend it...
Great video!!!
is it nesry to use a oil base sharpie?
is that the same for using promarkers?
Can it be any type of sharpie?
Can we use any marker ?
Does the cup still have the art on it?
Is that ceramic mug or subli mug?
Will it work if I put it in a microwave instead of an oven? Anyway thanks for the tips! :)
for how long on the baking? thanks.
How many washes has your mugs lasted?
Hey great video. Question if I used a glass to do this do I still bake in oven and is it safe?? Thanks
Diane Mawdsley Hi there. No, don't put glass in the oven. Glass will require a different medium specific to drawing on glass. :)
Thanks StyleNovice.
Okay, So I didn't get oil based but I already personalized the mug and I don't have time to re do it so does it have to he oil based??
+BrandyJ Hancock Try it and see, I'm wondering the same
I tried it and it stays when you touch it but if you were to wash it it would most likely come off. It's just going to be a decoration I guess 😕
+BrandyJ Hancock just go over it with a waterproof glaze over the whole mug and it should work fine
A question I have wondered.....I plan on trying this and learning as MUCH as I can to make sure my first shot sticks right. For the 30 minute bake time, do you set your timer as SOON as the mugs go in (meaning the mugs run time is also during the heat up time) or do you NOT start the timer TILL the oven hits the 220c mark?
Zetamoon Start the timer once it reaches temperature :)
I put my mugs in for 40-45min, starting the timer at the very start. That way it includes the warm up as well as 30min bake time. My mugs have worked a treat with no issues.
thank you!
What is a matte mug? I got a cheap white one from a store and I am new to this an don't know how to tell the difference? Thanks :)
Hi there, a glaze is the shiny clear coat on a mug. A matte mug would be purely made of just ceramic
