    The modx was my first synth purchase after a 10 year break in making music. I did research for about a month. I went ahead and purchased it but was disappointed. I told myself I would exchange it the next day but that night I stayed up all night with it and by the morning I decided it was not going anywhere. I learned that synth in and out and 4 years later I am so glad I made that choice to keep it.

    Cracking open the manual and actually understanding what workflow, terminology and synth basics meaning is elementary. Took me a minute too. As my understanding went up the complexity became simpler as all synths,samplers and midi are the same just we have learn them. Wise words Bolo.

    Whenever I get overwhelmed with learning gear, I make myself learn at least one new thing everyday. The only way for the knowledge to stick is for me to manually follow the manual and do the tasks on the computer or hardware. Since one task a day is easy, I build momentum and eventually do more than one task per day.

    I purchased mine in December 2021. With performances you can be a live one man band, drum, fiils & patterns for the bridge verse and chorus. Also really good for sketching ideas. I think it has a sampler, but I haven’t even got that far yet. now I’m encouraged to do so.

    It is few and far between we find someone who admits to not deep diving on a piece of tech and feeling it does work for them. Me too, with a high-end compressor I bought ($2,200), until I did more research, deep dove and found out why it was a jewel indeed and now I cannot mix without it. When we humble ourselves we can discover many a thing. Joe

    This was a very good video. It’s good to jump in and get a taste of a piece of hardware, but when you get stuck or in some cases with more sophisticated stuff, reading the manual is going to lessen the frustration. What I do is first play around a bit and then skim the manual enough to get a basic understanding and know where to look for specific answers. I then go back and start using the gear and when I get stuck go to the manual and figure out the solution. The fact is with something like a synth remembering everything immediately is tough if not impossible and until to use it in a practical way it’s not going to stick.

    Well this just pooped up in my feed. Your MODX story sounds similar to mine, except I'm just a hobbyist and never wanted to send it back. Cutting my teeth on Roland in the 80s and 90s then getting an original Motif 8 in 2022 was a whole culture change with the workflow, and I never used the Motif with a DAW. Got rid of it in 2020 and got the MODX8 in 2021 and started learning how to use Cubase...freebie version that came with the MODX. That was a double whammy to "try" learning both at the same time. The manual just confused the fk out of me, but just playing around and figuring things out has been a game changer. Glad you kept yours!

  • @ckatheman
    @ckatheman Год назад +3

    The most lacking item is some sort of a "visual" editor for those arpeggios and the sequencer. Even a super basic "piano" roll editor or a simple track representation of the pattern would be extremely helpful. Otherwise, I love mine.

  • @kvmoore1
    @kvmoore1 Год назад +7

    Wow. I actually thought you sent it back. Anyway, I'm glad you decided to keep it. I agree with you about the sounds in that keyboard. They are really nice and have a very good quality to them, especially the pianos, guitars, and organs.
    Of course, I will say the same about Roland and Korg keyboards as well. They all sound very good. It's just a matter of personal preference and budget. Also, if there is a specific type of sound you're after (like a Rhodes electric piano emulation for example) and you've tried them all, then maybe you can decide on the one that is best at reproducing that specific sound.

Every manufacture does it differently from an implementation standpoint. I have had to deep dive manuals even for my guitar gear. Most stuff being made now a days is like a mini computer and you have to learn how it’s setup.

    Same thing happened to me when I bought a Montage back when they first came out. I bought a Montage 6 intending to put it on top of an 88 controller. Then found out that you could not do that (at the time) because the pianos on the Montage were split across multiple MIDI channels. I sent it back and was mad that it did not work like the Motif's that I owned over the years. Now I want a MODX Plus, but I want it to be a DX7 with extras. I have no expectation of making it the center of a MIDI setup like I planned for the Montage.

    Guess what: Wrote, arranged and mixed a Song in just half a Day.
    Its just time to splitt the process back to its Parts:
    Composing -> arranging -> producing-> Mastering.
    Maybe "everything all at once" works for Generation Z (and as a movie...^^), it don't work for me in the Studio. But took me almopst 10 years to realise....

    I purchased as a 2nd tier gigging board and it is fantastic for that. If Yamaha would expand the sequencer to be more of a true workstation it could be even more valuable to me. I also wish they would allow more flexibility of MIDI receive instead of primarily locking you into parts per channel. Hybrid mode helps but not really the way I want it to work.

    In order to customised anything, you MUST do deep menu diving, pressing lots of buttons. At first it seems like, "this isn't right", but when you understand how sounds are built, it starts to makes sense. Pressing lots of buttons (on the touch screen) is the normal way to achieve anything interesting. It's an extremely powerful synth and can create a surprising amount of effects and sounds, which seems only limited by imagination and button-pressing. Every time someone reviews a different synth, I think to myself "yep the MODX can do that, and more", but it's not easy to achieve at times.

    Think Different. Brain Groove. 2 things that i needed to learn in life. Started on old PC learnt it got brain groove. Got annoyed even though it was my business to build PC systems tryng to do music 245 years ago!, so finally bought a Mac. Think Different, Got annoyed again on Mac and ffinally after id figured something id smack my head like im a dummy. Well iwasnt , I just trained my brain to think and work in a certain way. Now I can use Windows, Linux and OSX systems cause I know how the guy who made it thinks. You nailed it when you said Yamaha, Roland and Korg do the same. Thinking differently so you have to start to learn how THEY think, It hurts the brain!, Im lazy! but once I start learning properly I can reprogram my head and it starts to make sense and work properly. Ive been reading Roland Fantom O and Modx reviews trying to figure what to buy cause they both seem different. Have not bought either yet. if I was rich id grab the Montage , modx lacks physical controls, but i like the layout of the Fantom O but somethings i dont ! . Where's the perfect Keyboard! LOL.
    I suppose it doesn't exist. Id be really interested for you to expand in a video what key things you learnt in how Roland and Yamaha approach and think differently. Learning that helps so much in working it out and not getting stuck. cheers bro. your awesome.

    Who knew something like actually sitting down and reading the manual would work to your advantage! I'm impressed that you figured this magical concept out on your own! 😗😉

    Yeah, like the Montage, the "unusual" MIDI implementation on the MODX is a minefield. Bad Mister needs a medal for putting up with all of our questions on this before Yamaha added the necessary option.

      its what they have done for the last 25 plus years so if you know their gear from way back its simple enough to figure out . trying something completely different though to newbies is eas, can be quite confusing. unlearning basiclly

    Oh, he is wrong about the credit at Zzounds . You can get a ModX with no credit check and one payment down. I got the Helix that way = $1800+, payments of $141. Pd off. MPC X, with 433 down and payments of $140 a month. You can get up to $3000 in credit, I don't know if history counts but I've never been late on a payment and bought over $9000 in gear within 3 years. Next on the radar is the MPC 61 in September, after that, I will get Modx 76 by Spring 2024.

    Haha, reading the manual is a wise decision, but it's also a sign that we are getting old. We would have never done that 20 years ago.

    I think Yamaha should really improve its workflows... I felt the same and took a long time to get used to it. It shouldn't be that hard, specially nowadays we have a lot of other products that lets you create songs way easier than that...
