I believe in one of the books by Rich Hobson he describes how the initial trail this road follows was put in by Pan Phillips so they could get a plow from the docks in Bella Coola to their ranch. All done by pack horse. For those not in the know They started the Frontier Cattle Company. There is a movie and subsequent TV series based (loosely) on the books. Has the some cast that made it pretty big after on different TV shows.
It’s about 30 km that aren’t paved, and the province won’t pave it unless they build it…and they aren’t willing to build a road to Bella Coola. It’s called the “Freedom Highway” because the people in the valley built it themselves so they could drive in and out.
@@trwent A few reasons. one. the cost. They would have to upgrade all the existing road so the asphalt would stand up. Otherwise it would crack and major potholes almost right away. Two. the locals prefer it the way it is. It's a country thing. Three. it's cheaper to maintain as a gravel road. especially in the winter. a lot of people also believe its safer that way because people drive slower. Originally engineers said it would be impossible to do so the highway stopped at the top of the hill. The locals took over and finished it off. The premier at the time liked that they were doing it themselves and kicked in money as they progressed.
What are you trying to "say" with this video? That road is not bad at all if you know how to drive. You don't need an SUV, you don't need a 4x4, it's just a gravel road which is actually in pretty good shape. I have seen at least a dozen videos about that road and each one of them is talking about the steepness etc.. All a bunch of BS. I drove that road from Williams Lake all the way down to Bella Coola on a beautyful but very cold winter day ( -40 C) and back to Williams on the same day. Not a single problem. Rear wheel drive truck with studded winters, no chains! All you guys are trying to make money by showing nothing!

rocks + trees
I almost did this with a 32 foot rented motorhome, until I saw a similar video.
I immediately cancelled my campground reservation in Hagensborg.
never fails ? somebody else is always rushing
You could have pulled over more often, whenever a "local" got slowed down behind you. Not required but appreciated.
Looks like nearly the entire highway is paved except for that relatively short section. Why don't they just pave that section too and be done with it?
To keep you off it
@@scottc4433 Me personally?

Maybe this highway should be called the "Holy Shit! Highway".
It isn't that bad, I've been driving it for over 30yrs. Slid off the road once in my life time on this road and that was near Green River
Beautiful road. Great car to do it in, but hardly "off road". People drive 30 foot RVs down that hill.
Nice video! did you have to air down? and did you need to have all terrain tires?
Hi, no, I didn't air down the tires and I used regular all season tired M+S.
@@DenisAstahov thank you for the quick response! got this trip on my bucket list! hopefully this year/summer, I get to do it! :)
@@alecdelacroooz Amazing views on the way! in Bella Coola we took Ferry to Port Hardy, also nice 10 hours cruise.
@@DenisAstahov thank you! I heard from a friend the cruise can be pricey but worth it! will definitely need new tires tho!
How fast were you driving?
40-60km/h
And very slow in the turns
самые страшные 10км в моей жизни :)
Сколы на авто есть ?
Неа, всё гуд
How were the mosquitoes in that area?
When we was there, no mosquitos attacked us at all.

I am trying to say nothing.

@@retogetzmann7144no closures unless there has been a rock slide or snow slide. It's good most of the year
You were driving too fast.
