The "Odd Thomas" books, are my absolute favorite of D.K. However, I've never been disappointed w/ any of his books. And I've consumed a heck of a lot of his books. This is my 1st experience w/ an audiobook of his. Absolutely loving it. Over halfway through atm. Brilliant storyteller

loved it....parts of it are funny to me yet it holds together as a very good spooker book. Very good narrator to...Buck schirmer did an xlnt job..................somebody on goodreads complained about the endless confusion about what the dark force is but i found that part of the suspense.
SPOILERS (stray thoughts while listening): (Also despite knocking it I do kinda love this book, it holds a special place in my heart; but revisiting it, man are some of the creative decisions amusing / baffling). 01:14:19 this passage freaked me out so much as a kid 01:57:44 Koontz’s most effective observation on evil in the whole novel imo 03:22:37 love the perspective, the sense of time during this scene; is the sort of thing that doesn’t translate when adapted to film. gives a ton of weight to the ‘looming threat’ for the rest of the novel 03:37:46 lost sleep over Tal Whitman’s “macabre image” first time I read this 😅 06:21:05 why spend HALF YOUR BOOK setting up the mystery only to reveal the nature of the Ancient Enemy in a *random aside about woodland critters?* Twenty squirrels turning into four raccoons, all just to mess with a FOX-ah, okay? THAT’S how you reveal it huh? How about two creepy kids turn into one Wargle? Imagine if the protagonists (the ones we’ve spent all this time coming to care about) witness the weird splitting and merging shapeshiftery stuff, if we got that from their perspective. 7:53:36 This is one of the most striking visuals in the whole novel for me. When I think of the “Phantoms” book, I think of this. 09:23:00 1. Radio announces police officer is missing or dead as of previous evening. 2. Escaped murderer knows police officer has ultimate mountain hideout. 3. Escaped murderer enters officer’s home, swaps prison duds for civilian clothing. 4. Escaped murderer *completely trashes officer’s home for the fun of it, leaving fingerprints everywhere*. 5. Escaped murderer holes up in ultimate mountain hideout. 6. Santa Mira PD begin investigation by checking missing officer’s home, immediately find evidence of struggle. 7. Lab matches fingerprints to escaped murderer. 8. Dog team at cabin effortlessly sniff out secret cave. 9. “Next stage of human evolution”, behind bars once again, wonders where he went wrong. 10:45:13 Ok, ok, despite the woodland critter thing this is a pretty sick reveal 🤘🏼 13:24:20 The narrator sounds like he is having so much fun doing the Dennis Hopper / Charles Manson voice :) Genuinely makes me squirm to boot
I really love this author Dean Kunz he bases everything in California situations happen. Also, it’s good and evil and really bad evil stuff one thing for sure …. There’s really demons out there. But truly, I say they’re really is a God Jesus is real and the angels… I’ve owned over 20 dean koonts books .. and they’re all very good one day. There was a fire and they all burned and there was pieces of every book all over the front yard the house burnt down all the way, and even the firefighters were looking at the hundreds of pages have burnt, but one thing always on my mind the Bible didn’t burn. It got a little black from the ashes, 😮 ..
I loved this book when I read it over 20 years ago. I hope I enjoy the audiobook. I’m trying to get into them after enjoying Christine Kersey’s audiobooks!

Not criticising ,but am just pointing out that there is no way anyone is going to ride a Harley up a mountain track through the woods. Unless it was specially modified for the purpose, not the most versatile of motorcycles. However it does not detract from the story, in my opinion.
Koontz does that a lot... obvious oversights, comic book heroes and villains, painfully hokey romance and some of the worst written women and children by any writer from his era and popularity bracket. The unique and interesting plots are what carry the mediocre writing. He'd have been more successful, I think, selling story ideas to better writers for a royalty.
Great narration .. but ... as soon as they seen the severed hands and heads, she should have gotten her and Lisa the hell out of there ... drove to a phone , then to the hospital...also they don't make 10 shot 9mm revolvers.
This was a good one I didn't have to get it on autable. I didn't get to here the end thank you for listening to phantoms why coundt hey leave the final minute. Was this really the devil or a creature? Or both ? Did his son ever wake up we never know ? Great ending. Not sure if it's the best I read so far 18 books now it's between lighting and this and key to midnight and then whispers probably top 4. Lighting might still be first thisnone is close with key to midnight and whispers maybe a tiny bit better. Next servants of twilight then twilight eyes I think that should be great. Im kinda going in order now even thought I started with lighting. I give this like a 4.6

This one started off promising to midway through but just wasn't my cup of tea. It got a bit too wacky IMHO, but I suppose he has to switch it up. Will say it kept my attention for the most part. As always thanks for the upload!

Was it a darkness or fog? James Herbert wrote "The Fog." It was published in the 70s. It is an awesome book. The only other book (really, a graphic novel) that is 100% darkness is 30 Days of Night.

Dean has two styles, quick and terrifying and long and detailed terrifying... This was the second and we don't need to wonder even one little, fleeting thought of a character, I am too impatient to listen to every word by the 8 hour mark.
Since about the sixth grade i've thought stephen king, dean Koontz and a few others are just a think tank. All their works are ridiculously similar. But that could just be the theft from Lovecraft.
This is fearful unknown science fiction real people monster good vs evil mysterious to egomaniacal cat and mouse horror chase to fight back being alone feel with evil merciless enemy story

He has somewhat of a diversity in his books. I haven't read all that many of those books but I think Dean has evolved since this came out in 83.
