Crighton was a man ahead of his time. For example, his book "Prey". Using nanotechnology for good and evil, having it become sentient, something that is happening now as we speak with AI....

I love how (if you’re familiar with Heinlein😅) you can see what a fan Koontz is of Heinlein. I’m guessing that the worm faces are a reference to “Have Spacesuit, Will Travel”. In fact, so far, this story reminds me a lot of that Heinlein classic.

As a resident of southern arizona, a retired border patrol agent, and being intimately familiar with the local geography, I appreciate this novel but I also instantly recognize mistakes in descriptions and pronounciations. Ajo is spanish for garlic and the J is soft like the letter H. Its pronounced ah hoe not ah joe.

Excellent book that cleverly depicts the parallels to current times.
But I do find the narrator's style overly flippant sometimes. His overly comedic delivery can border on irritating at times, considering the high stakes involved.
