Have you ever wondered if the enterprising merchants of Ugarit might have invested in a restaurant which catered to Hittites or Assyrians, where they might have gotten home-cooked dishes reminding them of their native lands? I thought the Hittite pub would be called "At the Sign of Teshub" or the Assyrian one might be "Asshur's Best". If the Minoans could have buildings decorated in their style, why not restaurants in Ugarit? ;)
🤣🤣🤣 I wouldn't be surprised. My guess is that there were probably some Hittites already in Ugarit doing that... maybe Assyrian merchants too although I can't recall any tablet or evidence confirming they were there. My guess is that if they could have traveled all the way to central Anatolia several hundred years prior, they could have also had a presence in a cosmopolitan port city like Ugarit. Haha l like the restaurant names though!
From watching this, which you did a good job, but it seems when it comes down to fighting the Assyrians, the kings and commanders are the first to flee. For example, Irhuleni of Hamath, Ahuni of Bit-Adini and Hazael of Aram-Damascus.
about the moabite rebellion - both the king of Moab (Mesha) and the second book of kings present their version of the event an interesting comparison, and the story of the Mesha steele is quite cool video idea on the house
Hi, thanks so much for the suggestion, appreciate it! It's funny, I had king Mesha and the Moabite stele/stone in the original script, but in production I took it out because the video was already so long and I actually covered it in another video where I read part of the inscription on the stone. Ancient Israel and Assyria were neighboring civilizations with a tense and often hostile relationship. Israel, a kingdom divided into Israel in the north and Judah in the south, faced constant threats from the powerful Assyrian Empire. Assyria, known for its military prowess and brutal conquest tactics, sought to expand its territory, leading to the conquest and exile of Israel's northern kingdom in 722 BCE. This marked the end of the northern kingdom, with many Israelites dispersed throughout the Assyrian Empire, a turning point that deeply influenced the region’s history and biblical narratives.
Very impressive. You’re always well prepared and well searched for these videos. It’s not a secret to recognize how much work you’ve put into this. I assume you have a sequel? If so, can you include a minute or two on some of these questions: - direct comparison between Israel and Judah? The reason for the naming. - conflicts between the two? - religions of the various groups in these two areas? I think you may one time had mentioned that the majority of the population ad been workshopping various gods. - relations between the two and phonecia, phillistia, and Egypt Can you go over the naming of the small kingdoms. Of why for example it’s called “Aram” Damascus or Moab or “Rabbath” ammon. Lastly, did all these Levantine kingdoms spear aramaeic in the early Iron Age (say around 800 BCE)? Thanks!
Hi, thanks for stopping by and the questions, appreciate them! Yes, there will be a part II, hopefully out by mid December. I'll do my best to answer as many of them as possible, though some of them are difficult because there is less to answer them with regard to archaeology - for example, conflicts between Israel and Judah and the naming come from the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, not archaeology. There are actually very few sources from Israel and Judah itself outside the Bible; most of what we know comes from others, mostly other groups within Canaan and then Assyrian and Babylonian sources which sometimes confirm and other times contradict what is written there. But, I'll do my best. Thanks again for stopping by, really appreciate it. Stay safe my friend!
Hi there Cy, I would like to thank you for your educational videos. By the way , I just wanna ask your opinion, if I may, does the account in the bible coincides with the archeological bases?
Hi, thanks so much for stopping by, really appreciate it! In some instances, yes, in others no. I really depends on people/civilization and the book. A lot of the Assyrian stuff and a good deal of the Persian conforms with it, though often different names are used for the people. In other cases, there's hasn't been a relation discovered. So, yeah, it really depends. Thanks again for stopping by, really appreciate it! More to come, stay safe!
The history of the Assyrian Empire in the Bible refers to Israel, only what is relevant is written. It is not the purpose of the Bible to record the whole history of Assyria. The Empires recorded are relevant to Israel as in; Babylonian. Persian, Greek (Byzantine) & Roman in Daniel.

This is a superb presentation. It puts Levantine history in the Iron Age in its proper context. I imagine archaeologists who work in this area (whom I've known at the Ecole biblique in Jerusalem [I was the librarian]) watching this and calmly nodding their heads in agreement. Maybe they dispute a detail here or there, but saying, in general, good work. For viewers who are less scholarly and more faith centered, they may be shocked to learn that Israel and Judah were minor kingdoms that emerged from an era of chaos and fragmentation, and subsequently, in their weakness, were conquered by more historically significant powers to the east. There's miniscule historical evidence for the Kingdom of David. One or two inscriptions, at most? (Tel Dan) And those contested by modern scholars. I'm not a polemicist in these matters, not having the knowledge to be such. I just want to say that it's refreshing to view a presentation such as this that's informative, clearly and engagingly presented, and that sheds light on a subject that can often be shrouded in ignorance and used for partisan and even violently political purposes.
Hi, thanks so much for your feedback, it's always great and refreshing to hear your view on all this. Yeah I know what you mean...I get a lot of slack from those who come here expecting this to be a Bible channel or present the facts solely in light of it, which as you know is not my goal; my objective is to tell the story as best as I can using whatever facts/texts/sources that may be available and then the view can either make their own opinion or research more on their own. Glad that you seem to agree! As always, thanks so much for stopping and offering your insight, it's really great to hear, especially since you've been exposed to a lot of this material at the École biblique. Stay safe my friend!

The Lost and Untold History of the Kurds: Rediscovering the Beginning of the Western Civilisation and the Origin of the Indo-European Languages. Soran Hamarash is a Kurdish writer, academic, historian and linguist who has dedicated nearly 30 years of his life to the study of the Kurds and their history. This book is a comprehensive journey into the beginning of writing and agriculture and, consequently, that of the history of the Kurds which is integral to these two foundational elements of the earliest civilisations. In this book, Mr. Hamarash demonstrates that the modern foundation of our understanding of ancient history and the origin of civilisation was not set for the purpose of knowing the past; rather, it was to serve ideological, religious, and political agendas. This manifested non-objective approaches among scholars, which has resulted in dealing with the people in historical records selectively and in isolation from each other. Consequently, the organic nature of human society is not currently reflected in the existing historiography, and this has led to a significant misunderstanding about ancient history. For the Kurds, it has led to a lost and untold history. A core argument stated here relates to the Sumerians who founded the first writing and one of the most advanced civilisations in human history. Their language is currently considered an isolated one, and allegedly died as a spoken language around 4000 years ago. Nevertheless, this book clearly demonstrates that Sumerian is not only still spoken in its newer form by the Kurds, but that the language is related to modern languages such as English, French, German, Russian and others. This book strongly opposes the conventional understandings of the ancient history of Mesopotamia and Anatolia. It evidences that the key to understanding that history, is the Kurds, the Indigenous people of “the cradle of mankind”. It argues unequivocally that without understanding the history of the Kurds, the origin of the western civilisation and that of the Indo-European languages will remain unknown.
during the late bronze age collapse, many invaders claim victories, although much evidence suggests they were taking advantage of environmental disasters which led to widespread instability, These environmental disasters seem to be downplayed or omitted in some of the records, so as not to distract from the claim of military superiority.
Haha thanks man, I try to sound like the people I'm quote but never thought that I was very good at it. Well done... Easy to listen to and not as obsessive about reinventing the history of the universe acoording to and all around the hebrew bible as others. Carefull about the coastal rivers though... The Orontis flows east then northward into Cilicya in modern day Turkey, not west then southward like the Jordan and most other rivers in the area (hence its Aramaic / Arabic name, 'Assi, meaning defiant).

Yeah, I've used multiple effects before, especially with various backgrounds (moving them while making increasing the size), will keep experiementing. That's one of things that I love about making these... every so often I learn a new trick, which slowly makes these videos a little better visually. Still have a ways to go though.
Dining in an Ugarithic buffet* restaurant would have been interesting.

From watching this, which you did a good job, but it seems when it comes down to fighting the Assyrians, the kings and commanders are the first to flee. For example, Irhuleni of Hamath, Ahuni of Bit-Adini and Hazael of Aram-Damascus.

both the king of Moab (Mesha) and the second book of kings present their version of the event
an interesting comparison, and the story of the Mesha steele is quite cool
video idea on the house
Hi, thanks so much for the suggestion, appreciate it! It's funny, I had king Mesha and the Moabite stele/stone in the original script, but in production I took it out because the video was already so long and I actually covered it in another video where I read part of the inscription on the stone. You can check out a short history of Moab in this video around the three minute mark.

U ppl r NOT their descendants
@@Itsme-um3vj are you saying the Assyrian Empire didn't exist because they were different peoples? But that is the Definition of Empire - conquering different peoples!
It's me show me any person outside your people who called you Aramean? You won’t find any. Since Assyrians took Syria you don’t hear of arameans any more. Your just like Lebanon and claiming you guys are Phonecian when in reality you guys went missing for hundreds of years

If so, can you include a minute or two on some of these questions:
- direct comparison between Israel and Judah? The reason for the naming.
- conflicts between the two?
- religions of the various groups in these two areas? I think you may one time had mentioned that the majority of the population ad been workshopping various gods.
- relations between the two and phonecia, phillistia, and Egypt
Can you go over the naming of the small kingdoms.
Big fan here, love your stuff!
Thanks man, appreciate it! Glad people like you find this stuff interesting. More to come, stay safe!
I'm assyrian for assyria ashur and Im proud because I come assyrian

Loved this episode as well! Very informative, always fact-based which is a rarity nowadays. Also, i even loved the intro to the promotion, the bors phone call - funny! :)

Which video is part 2?
during the late bronze age collapse, many invaders claim victories, although much evidence suggests they were taking advantage of environmental disasters which led to widespread instability, These environmental disasters seem to be downplayed or omitted in some of the records, so as not to distract from the claim of military superiority.
