Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. I'm so glad other painters have dirty pallets! My pallets always end up so muddled! But I think it helps woth the harmony of my pieces!

I’ve noticed I make the best paintings when my palette is so unaesthetic it looks dirty. Rich, natural colors. Of course it depends, it’s not so good if you’re painting galaxies or neon/bright art, but it’s a good friend when you make still life paintings or organic subjects. I love that palette and i should get back to watercolor.

i just wash a water colour palette but i like to keep some muddy bits to tone down vibrancy a bit. I used to love acrylic because you can peal it of like leather after a few sessions (i just smudge everything together after painting day
Just wet a paper towel with hpt water and lay it over the palette, let it sit and them wipe it. Like people do for make up pallets
Why would you replace it- it’s water colour; just spritz it with water and wipe with a paper towel
The paintings look amazing though. Maybe a keep a home palette and a outside palette.

It is interesting how come the paintings look like they’ve been painted with tempera or gouache and not in watercolour
You should get the watercolor paint tubes that way every time you can squeeze out a little bit and start with clean. Watercolors
Yeah but then probably a big glob is picked up when you need just a little
I dont ever clean out my palette. It looks as messy as hers lol. At a certain point the more you add colors and get it all mixed up overtime by water etc., i find the colors become the perfect shades i use often. I use the dried up mixed up parts for shadows or transitions. Its nice, its like food leftovers that you keep heating up and it gets tastier everytime.

Why would you replace a dirty palette especially with water color??? Just clean it?
If it’s watercolor, run it under water and just king of stir the water onto your pallet with your hand, it’ll come off
Palette mud is the best colour

Clean colors are amateur, I mean you will mix anyway do get harmony and balance, there can be some clean-er colors but dirt around is what makes them pop. Yay to dirty used palettes 🎉
