This was my first firearm. I purchased it for plinking and to introduce my son to shooting. My only firearm experience before was military. I love this gun, and because of it fell in love with the Ruger brand. This was a way better use of my time than watching Netflix. 😊
i bought this gun to teach my mom to shoot and she still shoots it. 3000 + rounds and any weird things was caused by ammo im positive of that big box winchester and federal caused the bobbles. I got her some 22 stingers for it as well and it shoots like a dream.
Just received my SR-22 yesterday. Replaced guide rod & spring (Galloway). Greased slides & Rem oil on rest. Out on the range today. 30 feet distance. 1 ft targets.4 new mags. 5 different types ammo - CCI-SV, Rem-Thunderbolt, Rem-Golden, CCI-HP, and 50 very old rounds??? 232/250 on paper. No failures. No problems. Not bad for a 63 year old newbie shooter. Read every thread, review and you tube videos before I chose the Ruger. So far I am in plinker heaven. Heading out to the range again tomorrow !!!!!
I always rely on your knowledge of firearms before I purchase. The vid is 5 years old, but the experience is long lasting. Getting into small caliber target clubs and thanks again for your thoughtfulness and sharing of the workmanship.
I am a Brit and I live in the wilds of Scotland or as we call it, God's own country. (I wish that we could have guns here). However, when I see your videos I wish that I lived in the USA. God bless and keep on shooting.
Know how you feel I live in the wild west of Ireland I have two 12guage shotguns for hunting but it's expensive to get into. 22 pistol shooting here and very strict
Every video I've seen you post so far is very informative and professional. You stay honest even when a round doesn't chamber and I appreciate that a lot. Thank you for staying professionally honest and giving the info needed to make an informed purchase. God bless
steve stamps No, no. After Sandy hook they made availability of .22 ammo miniscule, now whenever places, especially Wal-Mart gets .22 ammo some people go out of their way to get to it first so it doesn't get bought out.
PJ MasterDiddy Where do you get your info? There was a shortage because the .22LR is the most widely used caliber in the country and after Sandy Hook people panicked and started cleaning out ALL the ammo. Since more people use .22 and it's relatively inexpensive it sold out faster and has stayed sold out since. Ammunition companies have gone on record saying that they've been producing .22LR 3 shifts per day since. It will come back when people feel like they've horded enough!
AwesomeFinish where are yo getting your info from?? The same factory that makes .22 also makes other caliber ammo. So why continually retool the factory to produce the least profitable ammo when you can produce something that is 3 to 4 times more profitable? So manufacturing is down and demand is up.
Mr. Hickock, Thank you for your your time and effort in putting together these videos. They have done quite a bit to educate me on firearms, and safety and handling. It's thanks to this video, I decided on my first firearm, the SR22, and acquired it before it went off roster here in California. Keep up the great work!
I have watched this video at least three times. Tonight I tried "soft inserting" the mag on my SR22, and it always works properly. No need to "slap it in", at least in my experience. The SR22 is my favorite firearm thus far. It just works. I have probably 400? rounds through mine, without a single malfunction.
Amazing gun im in love with it. Its one of my EDC pistols, many dislike and disagree with carrying a .22 but I dont see anyone lining up to be shot by one.
I carry mine occasionally too. I guess people forget that the assassin's favor .22's much of the time. The biggest problem with .22 for edc imo is the unreliability of the ammo, not the gun......
Ryan Satter that is old ammunition. Modern quality 22lr is very reliable. Lucky gunner did a reliability video trying to get cci to fail and couldn’t. He put one batch of 500 in a vibrating brass tumbler for an hour and 500 more were exposed to salt water for 24 hours. 500 more were straight out of the box. There were zero failures of any kind.
This video sold me on the Ruger SR22. I've been looking for a plinker, something reliable, something inexpensive in both price of the gun and ammo, and something that'll eat anything. And above all, something that'll be fun to shoot. This gun seems to have it all. I can't say I'm surprised as Ruger doesn't half-ass anything. Great video.
I've had this gun for almost a year. Great little 22. Feels nice in the hands and its fun to shoot. As far as the failure to feed issues. Mine started doing that a lot. Thought it was a mag issue at first. Then tried different ammo. Turns out its finicky when it gets dirty. I use this gun a lot for target practice. I find that if I clean it (I use break free CLP and a brass brush) every 200 to 400 rounds it solves the FTF issue.
I have had this pistol for awhile and just love it. I purchased the treaded barrel kit recently since it wasn’t available when I originally purchased the gun. Just a great little 22 and very comfortable to shoot.
Bought my wife an SR22 for her birthday a couple years ago. She came with a S&W Lady Smith .38 and with age she decided she didn't like the .38. Sadly her health took a dive and she passed away this past February. I had read quite a bit about the SR22 before the purchase and others had commented to feed only "quality" ammunition for reliable operation. I've never fed it other than Remington Golden Bullets and have never had a single problem. I enjoyed watching you figure out the problem, even if I did talk gruffly to the television. (I do that these days) I really enjoy shooting Barbie's SR22. I'm wondering now why I left in the box for two years, waiting for her I guess. I hope you do decide to keep that one and I hope to see more videos on it.
Traded my Walther p22 away yesterday- had it two weeks, lost $150 on the trade. Got it for xmas from my wife. Sorriest pistol I ever owned. Got a Ruger SR22 in trade. Instantly all my ftf fte, ftc problems went away. Talked to Walther they told me to only use CCI mini mag. I was, but also wanted to use other ammo. Would not shoot other HI-Vel ammo, and most definitely no non-premium ammo. They said it was in the manual. It's not, only to use 22LR. If it takes a specific cartridge it should be posted on the box. Internet is full of videos on how to modify the Walther to make it work . I call BS on the Walther. I got the gun to shoot, not have to repair it new out of the box, or send it in new for warranty, or not be able to use it if I can't find special ammo.. Stay away from the Walthers- get a Ruger.
Richard Alexander no manufacturer should make a gun that only shoots one brand/kind of ammo that's dumb I have a sr22 as well before I had a 130 dollar pheonix arms .22 and all it liked was Cci ammo almost everything else would fte or ftf so I bought the Ruger.
That was how my Beretta 21a bobcat was.. basically a single shot gun with bulk ammo. Also no extractor so you couldn't just rack to clear&reload. Worked great with cci though
bad bad mc bad It wasn't a .22 but Kimber 1911 was super reliable with anything.. seriously regret selling it and think i might get another with my stimulus check.
bad bad mc bad For sure. I just feel like I see a lot of Kimber hate while my experience was just the opposite. Anyway, got my quarantine money.. ultimately it's a tough call between a nice 1911 or a mini14 folder. The later has been on my list for years.
My pistol permit letter of approval just arrived in the mail today, I live in New York State got it in 5 months so happy, this little Britt is already on hold at my local gun shop! Can't wait!
my wife and i both have SR22's (hers is Rasberry) and we put through about 300 rounds each a week......love them better than some of our others handguns.
I bought one right after you made this video, I love it! I still have it, it came with the laser and all the other Goody's. I love the educational video's. keep up the good work!!
Another great video. I've been wanting a semi auto .22 pistol for a while and have been torn between a few different ones. Finally decided to jump on one today when a local shop offered one I couldn't pass up. Got me a sr22 stainless. They even threw in some of that "rare" .22 ammo so I could play with it right away. Thanks again for the info. Very helpful as always. Keep them coming Hickok!
I got a little Bersa Thunder 22 after liking my .380 so much. It's pretty fun to plink with at the range and cost me like 5-10 cents/round. The cost of a day at the range brought me from $80/day (9mm/380/40) to about $20 with 22LR, so the wife is happy about that. It's funny about ammo though. It likes CCI but a lot of others fail to eject.
The wife bought a SR22 for her first gun. We've put several different type of ammo through it with reasonable results. The thunderbolt ammo I've had for years seemed to be the worst, but hey you get to teach clearing a malfunction. Other ammo worked fine, CCI blazer, mini mags solid, fed bulk .36gr HP, CCI standard velocity worked fine too. The high velocity ammo and .40gr bullet weights is the key to reliability. HVHPs or .40Gr standard V. The thunderbolts being old (10+yrs) are not reliable in a 10/22 so fresh ones may work better, I'm just not going to pay the price for junk ammo when you can get crappy ammo for the same price.
My first Ruger pistol was a Mark 2 22/45 and I still have it today. Disassembly is not that easy would be my only complaint. When I bought the Mark 4 22/45 disassembly was so easy it brought a tear to my eye! LOL Ruger has GREAT Customer service hands down!
In India you wouldn't be able to buy even one bullet 😞 only the cops, gangsters and politicians have guns...I have to satisfy my passion for firearms by watching RUclips videos, 😖 nice video bdw☺
Lots of people online talking about how bad the .22 round is in terms of defense. Unlike 98% of them, I’ve actually seen people die from the round and a few others severely injured. Bullets, of any caliber, can you put a man down with just one, well placed shot.
Where that is true. I think many are referring to being in a self-defense situation. Having the adrenaline flowing, and everything going on around you it can be difficult to place that one well placed shot.
Saw this video a little while ago and I recently took my fiance to the range for the first time. We rented this firearm and she absolutely loved it and subsequently is in love with shooting now haha. Definitely a great gun for first time shooters. Going to buy one soon.
Picked up one last weekend. Shot low but the sights adjusted easily. On the money windage wise. 200 rounds of Thunderbolt and 100 rounds of CCI in the first day. No failures. Feels great in my hand. Bought in large part due to Hickoks review. Thanks!
I bought RUGER SR22 , 2 yrs ago . Gun must have 2.5k to 3k rounds thru it . I run anything from cheap bulk pack , CCI , whatever was on sale . Love that little gun ! Keep it clean , it’s accurate too . Lots of fun .. have one for my wife also
I like stingers! In pistols it gives you the fire ball, like you're shooting a big magnum round. You never get a dud either which is good if you ever use it as a carry gun.
I enjoyed this clip. I recently purchased SR22 and shot some 30 year old ammo made older. I never had any problems after 500+ rounds. I to enjoy shooting this weapon. Thanks again for the great post.
Awesome video and review as always. I just reviewed the SR22 in my video as well and I love this gun. It is a ton of fun to shoot and will take pretty much any type of ammo. Some types of ammo work better than others, but overall I haven't had any real (non-ammo related) problems with the gun.
I’m not a professional, but I do have a fair amount of range time with SR22’s since my wife and I each own one. They run great with higher velocity rounds like CCI Mini Mags, and not as well with standard velocity. Hickok45’s issues here look a lot like what happens with ours with the weaker rounds or bulk pack stuff.
You may not see this but I do have one of these that I use for the classes that I teach. After about 15,000 rounds I started having several misfire issues. I replaced the recoil spring rod with a steel one. That started to reduce the misfires. I also found that with my big hands, I switched to the big floor plate so that my pinky is underneath the mag. If found that without moving to that, there is enough play in the magazine to cause downward pressure if I did not out my finger underneath. The only other thing I had a problem with is that you need to use solvent to spray down through the firing pin to keep it clean. The disassembly of the firing pin block was more than I want to do every cleaning. The very last issue I found with mine is that it does not like a very tight crip on the gun. With those issues resolved and using 1280 fps rounds, I am now around 35,000 rounds through that gun.
Tracers are so fun to shoot! I used to enjoy in the Navy when we'd have night gun shoots, and you can really see the Arc of the bullet and you think a 308 or 762X51 shoot a long way until you see it up against the fifty-caliber or a 25 mm chain gun it makes the M14 & M60 look like a peashooter...
While the 22 lr would not be my first choice as a defensive weapon, I myself would not want to get hit with one of these little bullets. Anyone that thinks that the 22 lr round is useless as a defensive cartridge should take a look at the President Reagan shooting and what the shooter was able to do with just a little 22 revolver.
Derick Rogers Pretty much muzzle velocity (V) and the mass of the bullet in grams (m) by this formula W=m×V2 divided by 2. You get the energy of the bullet in joules.
I have heard for years and I don't really know how true it is, but the .22 caliber bullet is a surgeons nightmare. I'm assuming it bouncing off bones or organs internally. I would not want to find out myself.
I picked one up the other day for my girlfriend to use at the range. She likes the feel of the grip and the weight. I enjoy plinking with it. A great gun to introduce anyone to firearms as it is not intimidating at all. Thanks for the videos.
I bought some tracer 22 rounds a few years back ~DON'T~ on the 3rd shot from my beat up old revolver it sounded kinda funny, nothing funny about the 4th shot, fire and lead came out everywhere except to end of the barrel. The 3rd round had stuck in the tube when I fired. Gives a whole new meaning to the words " gun shy". Had a tough time getting those rounds out and my old revolver clean up. Really lucky it was just 22 ammo and a strong old pistol.
Purchased sr22 mid 2014 love this gun like you very very fun to shoot. Mine will actually cycle some of 22 longs pretty consistently. Your channel is absolutely best.
I had one of these for a few months about a year ago. No matter how much I cleaned it or what ammunition I used I never once got it to run a full magazine without a malfunction. I finally gave up and traded it in. And I have a Mark IV and a 9E, big fan of Ruger.
Just picked up the last one at Sportsmans Warehouse today. $299. Great gun. Nice trigger. Dropped 100 rounds of CCI thru her. No issues. It has a feel about like a Taurus 111 G2 8mm. Nice length grip. Not like a Glock 23 with the stubby grip. Not as heavy as a Walther P22. Thanks Hickok! As always enjoyable video and review.
When I first bought my RS22 I had a lot of FTFeed incidents. I discovered than 3 of the five magazines I bought from Ruger has assembly or manufacturing problems -- burrs on the feed lips, loose or tight gaps, even two with the follower button installed upside down! The dealer replaced all three and after a thousand rounds I can truthfully say I haven't had another problem with the gun. Accurate, reliable and. inexpensive...nice combination
I love the details you put into your videos....that leather sheet you put on your table makes it look way nicer and like something out of an advertisement, the laser joke cracked me up lol good job. You ever tried the tracers in 10/22 with gat trigger conversion? lots of fun at dusk.
Would love to see a follow-up Chapter 2 video on the SR22 if you still have it Hickok! I'm a new shooter trying to decide between a 22/45 Lite and an SR22.
Love this gun! Have yet to have a jam and I have ran hundreds of rounds with varieties of ammo. I use it as my home defense so my wife can shoot it and not wake the neighbors.
If I had to describe this pistol in one word it would be “fun”. The ergonomics on this pistol is off the charts. It fit both our hands like a glove. We took several of our own guns to the range yesterday including an older Ruger MKll 22/45. I decided to rent a Ruger SR 22. The trigger on the SR -22 was a good one as you have a small amount of take up and a nice predictable break. My older Ruger has a mushy trigger that makes it hard to tell when it’ll break
i've had mine since 2012 as well.. now it's got well over 50k rounds thru it.. and still just as reliable as any other pistol with good ammo.. polished internals... trigger job all done at home.
my girlfriend was looking at this or the walther P22, after reading a few review and watching this video (hickok45 is the only gun videos i watch on youtube) not only am i going to tell my girl that she should get a ruger SR-22 but i think im going to buy one too
@@a_single_white_female It’s good for planking and maybe conceal carrying. It’s harder to hit targets from distances that would have been easy with a 9mm

About time for a chapter 2 on this 22
I agree!
oldbandguy with the 4.5" barrel!
Still waiting for chapter 2

Hickock45 has the biggest happiest ants on that range. So much free soda.
My first Ruger pistol was a Mark 2 22/45 and I still have it today. Disassembly is not that easy would be my only complaint. When I bought the Mark 4 22/45 disassembly was so easy it brought a tear to my eye! LOL
Ruger has GREAT Customer service hands down!
In India you wouldn't be able to buy even one bullet 😞 only the cops, gangsters and politicians have guns...I have to satisfy my passion for firearms by watching RUclips videos, 😖 nice video bdw☺
am here for ur company...
Yeah, but India probably is getting that Kawasaki ZX25r, so it probably balances out.
Same in China, but I think India is kinda safe right?
clive 123 it’s time to move
Guns for show,knives for pro
Classic Hickok slow mo laugh! Kills me every time.
The 22 is the caliber some assassins use
Saw this video a little while ago and I recently took my fiance to the range for the first time. We rented this firearm and she absolutely loved it and subsequently is in love with shooting now haha. Definitely a great gun for first time shooters. Going to buy one soon.
Picked up one last weekend. Shot low but the sights adjusted easily. On the money windage wise. 200 rounds of Thunderbolt and 100 rounds of CCI in the first day. No failures. Feels great in my hand. Bought in large part due to Hickoks review. Thanks!
I gotta admit they did a good job butching that gun up. it looks mean as hell. At first glance it doesn't look like a 22.
Yes, it is a very handsome gun !!!😎👍
That’s the most important part tbh
Seeing a bulky gun pointed at you is the best deterrent, no matter the caliber
This was a great video, I was all jacked up on the SR22 after watching this video. Went and picked one up at a local store yesterday. Thank ya sir!
The SR22 is a great gun for training. Mine has been very reliable and tremendously fun to shoot. Thanks for your videos. Always a joy to watch.

I bought RUGER SR22 , 2 yrs ago . Gun must have 2.5k to 3k rounds thru it . I run anything from cheap bulk pack , CCI , whatever was on sale . Love that little gun ! Keep it clean , it’s accurate too . Lots of fun .. have one for my wife also
Years later I still love watching you guys shoot...hope you all are well
Love your videos! Just bought a SR22. Love the gun, keep making these great videos!
CCI Stingers are fantastic in these semi-auto .22LR pistols, and in any .22LR firearm for that matter. Great ammo.
I like stingers! In pistols it gives you the fire ball, like you're shooting a big magnum round. You never get a dud either which is good if you ever use it as a carry gun.
Stinger are slightly longer than regular .22 so some have trouble cycling , otherwise you are very correct
My wife's 22 lr Henry hates them.
I recently picked up a taurus tx22 and that's the only ammo it doesn't like..hmmmm I think it's the longer case but who knows
12:02 Yeeeee haaaaaa... WOW!!!! wow GO AT IT!
LOL :) You got excited when that 2 liter started spinning.
I enjoyed this clip. I recently purchased SR22 and shot some 30 year old ammo made older. I never had any problems after 500+ rounds. I to enjoy shooting this weapon. Thanks again for the great post.
I like the clean metallic sound instead of polymer or plastic scratching sound it makes when you pull the Ruger SR22 slide back and forth!
I recently got into shooting 22 because shooting 45acp is too expensive. Its so fun I keep buying more new 22 handguns! I been using CCI 40 grain.
Awesome video and review as always. I just reviewed the SR22 in my video as well and I love this gun. It is a ton of fun to shoot and will take pretty much any type of ammo. Some types of ammo work better than others, but overall I haven't had any real (non-ammo related) problems with the gun.
The round not feeding problem you experienced is a short stroke of the slide. That's an ammo problem. Professional opinion.
9:58 this is why I love RUGERS !
Got my license a little over a year ago and the next day I went and bought my first gun. The Ruger SR22 and my carry gun. Very nice gun
I own an SR22 and have had no problems with it with the exception of sub-sonic ammo it just wont eject the round. Love this gun!!! Great Job Ruger !
This guy reminds me of a cool laid back shop teachers I always enjoy his videos
He is a teacher.
well that explains it
😉 your Camera man a doing a a great job, good videos and also close up when needed 👍
ENOUGH! I've watched like 5 of your videos and after each one... I WANT ONE! Seriously, I'm going to go broke.
😂😂😂
That is a lot of rounds for any gun. That's not bad for a $300 gun
4:57 $3.25 for a box of 22's.
Them was the good old days.
Been seeing CCI quiet at my local Walmart. For 3.50 the past couple weeks.
Good for bolt and levers for plinking won't run a semi tho.
Love your videos, I always watch before I purchase a firearm, I understand everyone has their preference but your videos are very good.
0:07 this is why im falling in love with Rugers
I absolutely love mine. I carry it for grouse when I'm hunting big game. It's also perfect for kids to learn on.
I remember shooting Western Super X with my dad when I was little. Good memories. One of the guns he left me when he passed away was a SR-22.
He hates these cans!
The new phone book's here! The new phone book's here!

Go find a girlfriend and get some extra work.
He found his special purpose.
This is all I need and this chair
Gsfbffx Pdhhdf FiveseveN, your welcome.
I have had mine for about 4 years. This a great gun to have fun with!....I would like to see a chapter 2
You did so good with this, I bought one!! Love it!!
One of my recent purchases. Love it
Just bought shot it for the first time today and is one of the best guns i bought good job ruger hickock45 made my decision
And I have a Mark IV and a 9E, big fan of Ruger.
you should do a chapter 2 of how it has held up since this video.
I saw a new SR22 yesterday that was over $400. $435 I think.
Wow! Wonder what's driving the price up?
^^Taurus 111 G2 9mm^^ I can't find the durn edit button to change original post.
I've edited my posts before but usually stumble on the button to do it.
michael therrien I wouldn't shop there any more if I were you. Usually 300-350
I looked at it ,and i dont think it worth 100 more than a p22
Man! The good ole days, when you can get 22 ammo!
These videos are the best, it really just feels like going and shooting on a Sunday with your dad.
My wife loves this gun! This is her conceal carry gun
Just make sure she uses decent ammo 😁👍
Just bought one and loving these videos
Thanks for your engagement.
Great video. My SR has been in the back of the safe for awhile. After this it is getting cleaned and back in play. 👍
Over 90k rounds thru mine now.. bolt retaining roll pin starting to get worn.. but still eats everything.. love it
Love this gun! Have yet to have a jam and I have ran hundreds of rounds with varieties of ammo. I use it as my home defense so my wife can shoot it and not wake the neighbors.
You better be on good terms with the wife then...
LOL. So far so good...
If you shoot an intruder, your neighbors will be woken up twenty minutes later when the cops show up with lights and sirons on.
Man, he's a good shot.
He is, BUT it's a VERY accurate little gun.
small enough for carry conceal?????
Yes easily.
Ok, thanks
Use the match grade ammo or cci for reliability reasons.
Yes! It's pretty small! I have an inside the waistband holster. It's invisible even wearing a Tshirt.
You do know you can slide those trays out or the CCI cover back and dump out ten rounds at a time Right?
my girlfriend was looking at this or the walther P22, after reading a few review and watching this video (hickok45 is the only gun videos i watch on youtube) not only am i going to tell my girl that she should get a ruger SR-22 but i think im going to buy one too
every review or person i have talked to say to go with the ruger over the walther
I love this pistol I think it’s a great training gun because it’s kinda difficult to shoot
What do you find difficult about it?
@@a_single_white_female It’s good for planking and maybe conceal carrying. It’s harder to hit targets from distances that would have been easy with a 9mm
Had mine since they were first made.not difficult to shoot if sighted in properly. 😂
I've got one... with around 5/6000 rounds through it.. & THANKFUL it has never give the first Hiccup
I have one. It's a great little gun. Buy some bulk ammo and it's all-day fun. I never get tired of shooting it. Great job as always, hickok45!
