Wondering if Vitamin D3 is good for the kidney??? If you are with an inmune system low the type of food and vitamins are a variety but not sure if kidneys will be affected in the same way or not
Great chat filled with alot of info. I was just hit with a bomb, my recent lab shows my eGFR at 57 low and 66 high, my potassium at 4.7, Creatnine at 1.28. I met with a dietician who said I can consume potassium but not to exceed 2000 mg per day. Just trying to get a second opinion. Your thoughts, thanks. James
I would think that you’d also want to run that advice by your nephrologist. I erred on the side of caution, limiting my potassium intake to under 2,000-mg daily and after two months, my BP had skyrocketed from 100-110/60-70 to 160+/90! A subsequent blood test showed my potassium level dropped to 3.3! Once I added back in more dietary potassium, my BP quickly returned to normal. But I hasten to add that while doing so, I made sure to keep dietary sodium to around 1,000-mg daily. A potassium to sodium ratio at least 2:1 is normally considered vital to maintaining your BP. But don’t self-experiment: make such changes after receiving medical advice.
I’m 65. My potassium is 4.4. I’ve been eating wfpb with some clean meats like fish, chicken 1 or 2x/week. Juicing a few times a week. 1 coffee or tea a day. My most recent gfr is 86. I’m just wondering listening to you guys should I be choosing consciously low potassium now in case it rises in the future.? I do 10 000 steps 4 or 5 days/wk. I’m 45 kg. 1.54m.
In general it is not beneficial to restrict potassium intake unless labs indicate needing to limit intake (especially in early stages of CKD). Always check with your nephrologist/renal dietitian for individualized advice though!
My daughter hyperglycemia, and I am struggling to feed her a variety of foods, she's has special needs and is on a blended food diet. I have a varied menu that I make for her but I am feeding her the same things over and over again. I need some advice on this. If you would ha e the time.
We would definitely recommend working 1:1 with a dietitian as this is a very specialized case and requires individualized recommendations for what to feed her! This is a database of renal dietitians that you can check out to help find one: sites.google.com/view/ckdrd/home

@@PlantBasedKidneyHealth Thank you, I took a look at that. Is papaya enzyme ok? That’s sometimes recommended for CKD. Got my potassium down in a week and a half due to diet from 5.5 to 5. Wanted to take medicinal mushroom supplement, ie - Cordyceps, lion’s mane, shiitake, reishi & turkey tail, as they help pull out toxins from the body & help with liver & kidney function. Do your patients w/ hyperkalemia have good or bad experiences taking these functional foods? I’m hesitant, because they say mushrooms are high in potassium, but I don’t know if these medicinal mushroom supplements have an effect on the body’s potassium levels. Thanks!
Hello! First time here. My potassium has increased little lately. I’m a pure vegetarian. Can I eat orange, cantaloupe, Papaya,Oats & whole grain tortillas? 2% Milk is good? Please suggest
1 tablespoon of tomato paste is ~ 165 mg potassium. So this amount spread amongst a few servings in a recipe would definitely not be high in potassium!
I’m worried because my husband has CKD Stage 3A and also has been limited to under 2,000 mg of dietary potassium daily. He’s noticed that his blood pressure, historically about 110/66 for years, has just started to climb over the past two weeks. Ditto for his pulse. My question is this: I know that his lower intake of potassium can lead to a rise in blood pressure over time and if so, what can interventions can be done to bring his blood pressure back down? Thank you so much.
You will want to talk with his doctor and renal dietitian to make sure that he needs such a tight potassium restricted diet. Potassium is beneficial for lowering blood pressure and often times people in earlier stages of kidney disease with normal potassium blood levels have no potassium restriction in their diet.
ACE inhibitors are one of the preferred blood pressure medications for people with CKD. They can raise blood potassium levels, so that has so be considered/monitored when a person is prescribed it depending on the stage of CKD they have.
I have to take potassium to combat leg cramps and have polycystic kidney disease. I only take the supplement every other day and that seems to do the job. Is this a problem?
You'll want to discuss any concerns with prescribed medications/supplements with your physician. Some people with CKD have low blood potassium levels and are prescribed potassium supplements though. You can also discuss increasing potassium in your diet with your physician/dietitian as well!
I wish we had more drs like these. Western drs these days are careless, they are not thorough. We have to do our homework and then have a plan, because they don't care.
Oatmeal is a great whole grain option. Just make sure the only ingredients are oats. Instant oatmeal packets generally have sugar or artificial sweetener added and often phosphorus additives!
That would depend on the person and blood potassium levels. If someone with CKD (especially stage 1-3) has normal blood potassium levels, there is no reason for them to restrict potassium. However, it is important to get variety/diversity of different foods in the diet vs getting most/all potassium from just one food. We always recommend working 1:1 with a renal dietitian so they can assess your intake and needs and make individualized recommendations!
@@PlantBasedKidneyHealth I have lots of food sensitivities and I am limited in what I can eat. I heard a renal dietician say that if I keep below 2500mg of K per day I would be ok.
Definitely check out our diet playlist for more videos specifically on food! What to eat is highly individualized based on stage of CKD, health history, size, etc. We highly recommend working 1:1 with a renal dietitian so they can customize recommendations!

You'll want to check with his physician and renal dietitian for individualized recommendations. In general, coconut water is high in potassium (~400 mg per 8 oz) so that will depend on individual potassium needs. Some brands have added sugar which I would not recommend.

I even asked my nephrologist and cardiologist if my ckd had anything to do with my afib and they gave me indirect answers.
i was going to ask i just watched your lil episode, will oatmeal be consider low or high potassium levels and what type of oatmeal will be consider low. Will it be steel cut oats, roll oats or old fashion oats? Thank you: Cefe
Thanks!
When I had high Potassium they hospitalized me and gave me a intravenious saline drip for the day and then they took more tests and let me go home.
After listening to you, I wonder what they did give me in the hospital that tiime I had high potassium. I'm not sure.
@grandmajane2593,
They gave you saline because your sodium level might've been too low, is it? I think potassium and sodium levels have to be balanced!
I hope you're much better now. God bless you🙏
@@skinnydee1886 - Thank you. Yes, I am much better now. I'm being more careful with my diet. Thanks for your kind words.
@grandmajane2593
I'm happy to hear that you're now much better; God is great!
Take care and God bless 🙏
Im told that eldearly ppl and diabetes 2 patients had to take potasium. I am in that category. I hav also kidney stones for ever and often urinary infection and uric acid. What shall I do about potassium?
Check your oxalate levels,,they are the main cause of kidney stones
Amazing video
I just went to my nephrologist last week and they said I need to go on a low potassium but high magnesium diet. All the foods that was suggested to me by searching the internet said that it was high in both minerals. Also they increased my Lokelma to 20g a day
Oh I was eating two medium sized bananas for breakfast everyday, I guessed that's what did it.
@@Jahalang82 absolutely!
Loved this, super awesome
So with stage 3 kidney disease I can eat close to 2000 g of potassium in a day?
Do you have a video on the use of Allopurinol ? And Calcitrol. .? Is Atenolol ok to add to medications telamesartin and amlodipine for high blood pressure. I have auto immune contributing to very high inflammation rate in blood vessels . Hope to hear back from you. Can I email you for the information?
Be careful with Allopurinol, for my own experience made me cough a lot to a point will make you pass out , I told my Dr. a butcher called Christopher Penoyar in Shelton WA. he told me to ignore it, until I end up in a car accident that left me with DOUBLE VISION, to this day and he got away with it, because the State democrat Atty. Grl. did nothing about it.
DO you do any paid virtual consulting?
Leafy greens - Arugula, curly kale
Cabbage
Green beans
Onion
Berries - blue berries
Apples
Pineapple
Brown Rice
Millet
Legumes
Green peas
Tofu
Pumfu
Walnuts
Macadamia nuts
Chia seeds
Flax seeds
All great options! :)
Is flax seeds and black cumin safe for kidney tranplant patients?
Add pecan nuts to list. Pumfu is made of pumpkin seeds so I guess you can have the seeds just like chia and flax

I just had my potassium checked 2 weeks ago it was 4.7 is that good or ok?
That is in the normal range for potassium (3.5-5.2)

Cowgirl,
There are a lot of things that diabetics can not consume!
How can you messure potassium in your body at home?
You cannot measure potassium in your blood at home. You can track your intake and see how much potassium you're consuming from your food though!
@@PlantBasedKidneyHealth I experiencing a bit high Creatinine, what suitable food should I take?
Hi, I had an ultrasound saying I had mild prominent renal pelvis and just had bloodwork and says my potassium is 5.5. Could that be the cause? Only thing urine test showed was moderate leukocytes... never had kidney issues before.
Do you have a meal plan example?
I eat Pumfu. It has a nice nutty, umami kind of flavor.
I am in celery juice regimen every morning with an empty stomach for two weeks now my renal function is 17.7 with 50 50 ration 8+ ea. Will this increase my potassium level
I'm eating oat bran regularly, 6 times a week and now aware of the potassium in oats. Ok or not?
Do you have any discussions, about what happens when someone has one kidney ?
We do! Episode 10, Living With One Kidney. It is under Kidney Disease Overview playlist.

Mom has been admitted with her potassium was 2. She was delirius, obviously dehydrated. She is 86 the doctor said she must have blood tests every month and the Specialist didn't want to involve any discussion about what's wrong with kidney. Maybe because he didn't want thr risk of invasive surgery. She has frontal load dementia still in early stages. Has had numerous serious falls where surgery was needed. Can you advise. She NOW drinks lots of water. Being Scots only tea. But I would just like some insight on what could be wrong with kidney. Could you advise me. Thank you both. COLLEEN FROM SOUTH AFRICA

Thanks!
Brazilian? My brothers are both into it.
Can you use bicarbonate of soda if you have CKD daily

Can you do jiu jitsu with CKD?
What would you say - is a tablespoon of tomato paste on the safe side?
1 tablespoon of tomato paste is ~ 165 mg potassium. So this amount spread amongst a few servings in a recipe would definitely not be high in potassium!
Dude makes me want to do ju jitsu
Only 3 visitss and its already a WOW.

So don't eating's like bananas or stuff that has potassium in it, but eat more foods with magnesium? But don't you also need potassium
So, at 8:30, are ACE inhibitors good or bad, reduce or increase, potassium in the blood? Unclear, as you only say that they're common medications.
ACE inhibitors are one of the preferred blood pressure medications for people with CKD. They can raise blood potassium levels, so that has so be considered/monitored when a person is prescribed it depending on the stage of CKD they have.
can exercise help lower potassium????
My partner has very high potassium levels so cannot eat potassium foods!
I bloat with water in legs and abdomen i am diabetic 2 i got chronic obstructive lung disease and allergic astma and from food. High pottassium
Is hydrochoratizide retains potassium in the body?
I have to take potassium to combat leg cramps and have polycystic kidney disease. I only take the supplement every other day and that seems to do the job. Is this a problem?
You'll want to discuss any concerns with prescribed medications/supplements with your physician. Some people with CKD have low blood potassium levels and are prescribed potassium supplements though. You can also discuss increasing potassium in your diet with your physician/dietitian as well!
I was on losartan medicine but I got worsened

Me too. That’s the electrolyte I’m afraid of the most.
I eat 2-3 avocados a day. I am stage 3. Is that too much avocados?
