How to unlock BIOS Supervisor Password from Lenovo Thinkpad Laptop (no damage to laptop)

- I demonstrate how to remove/clear BIOS supervisor password from lenovo thinkpad laptops. I have tested this method repeatedly to clear supervisor password of my personal thinkpad W520 and W510. I have been using these laptop since, with absolutely no problem.
Theoretically, this method should work most of the Lenovo laptops. All you need to do is to find the location of EEPROM chip on your laptop (You can google it !). - Наука
I came in and watched this video expecting it to be another bogus "fix it" video but son of a bitch, it worked! I can't believe it. I have a T510 laptop. Thanks!
Should be mentioned somewhere that this only works with 30-series laptops and older (T530/T430/L530/L430/X230/etc.). On newer models (40-series and newer) Lenovo changed the way the passwords are stored and doesn't use the extra EEPROM anymore.
For EEPROM locations check this forum post: www.allservice.ro/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3521#3521

@@Knaeckebrotsaege so you are saying it won't work with my t420s?😢
@@raviei426 It works on anything up to (and including) the 30-series, so it will work on any T400/410/420/430, but not T440 and newer (using the 14" T4xx models as an example). EEPROM location for your T420s is between the southbridge and the battery connector: www.allservice.ro/forum/images/t420s.jpg
@@raviei426 just did it to my t420
it works
So what method do i use for t460s? Since its newer.
Can confirm this works -- just did it to my X61, worked the first time. You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.
I can confirm that this worked on an x200s. The pins you need to connect are the SCL and the SCA pins. You need then to press F1 several times after you jumped the pins. Do not try to set "a new password" but leave it blank just as he says. Then the "release" of the pins at the right moment is crucial. Thanks a bunch man for this tutorial. Saved my month (or so).
How did you know when to release the pins?
Thanks so much for this video! I purchased a msata drive to find out my BIOS was locked and I could not change boot order. After watching this video I was able to reset the supervisor password on my T520 that I had purchased online. Note to anyone attempting this. Make sure you are properly grounded and that you don't short any other portion of the board while you are attempting this. I used electrical tape to cover the underside of the board after this was done and reassembled the laptop. Everything has been working fine for a few days now. THANKS AGAIN!
How do you make sure you're grounded? haha! I'm watching all these videos and can't help but think that doing this would give an electric shock : )
i was able to unlock x61s. it took 3 attempts. during the last one i shorted the pins before powering up the laptop and tapped on F1 multiple times. i navigated to the "supervisor password - disabled" entry, hit Enter, released the pins and pressed Enter two more times (password and confirmation), then saved and restarted. it worked.
thank you Arpan for putting your time and effort into sharing your knowledge.
Thank you Sir! This method bring back to life my ThinkPad T61 laptop. Do all instructions carefully, especially shorting the pins on the eeprom chip. Have a nice day, repair your ThinkPad!
It works with the correct chip, pin(s) and ground. It's a great skill to have on 1 or more models.
Thank you so much for the video!I have recently removed the supervisor password from Thinkpad models T61, T61p, T400 and R500 by using this method.I used an external monitor and a keyboard (along with the laptop's own keyboard, as it is needed to turn the laptop on). It makes the job somewhat easier.
Hi, I was struggling last night with my T400, managed to boot to BIOS but could not modify anything. Were you just shorting these two pins with screwdriver?
Any grounding needed?
Just after shorting the pins, Did you have to press F1 to initiate booting to BIOS? Or does it start booting BIOS by itself after you shirt the pins? I'd appreciate some advise.
@@zgagacz I don't remember the whole procedure that I did, but with the T400, according to my notes, I 1) booted the computer 2) pressed the F1 button 3) shorted the pins only AFTER the BIOS asked for the password.
It worked!!!
I tried it on my Thinkpad L420 and worked!
You have to follow the directions TO THE LETTER however.
First time I forgot to remove the pin after entering the first blank password and it did not work. Viewed the video a second time and found where I made a mistake. Second time worked perfect
On the L420 the EEPROM is under the palmrest and very close to the pc express card slot barely covered by black insulation. Very easy to disassemble
Thanks Again!!!
Worked great on Lenovo X61 Tablet, just had to try various timings of power, ThinkVantage button and pins. Thank you.
good to know
Excellent explanation and very detailed, I followed it your instruction step by step and it worked on T420, Thanks
On my T500 it works too. Thank you very much.
I find the mainboard is somewhat more difficult to expand. I took a few experiments. The eeprom is also on the bottom of the board. Description U77 / 8 pin chip (SMD), a P24S08. Short Pin SCL+SDA
Best video about this subject. Worked as a charm on T410
Pls where is the bios place i cant found it and what side
the steps in this video is the most detailed! i failed to change the superviso password by following other video because of the lack of details of the changinging password step. with this video my x61 is freed now! thanks
thanks .
Confirmed this worked for Thinkpad L430. Thanks for your good job. :)
Worked perfect on my T520. Thank you :)
The best description of actions!!! Confirmed working on a Lenovo x201 bios v1.40
Are u able to help with my x201?
Worked on W530 I got on ebay with BIOS locked, it was a lot of work and some sparks, but worked great in the end, thank you!!
OMG! I almost took my laptop into a computer shop when it's something I was able 2 do myself n didn't cost me a dime, lol! U were very helpful. Thx u so much!
It tried that with two Thinkpads and booth i broke. Its not as easy as u think
Thank you. Well done, Confirmed working on a Lenovo T510
Worked for me too on lenovo thinkpad twist, I have tried during hours but when i removed the laptop battery , this has worked from the first next try
Thx man
Dude Thaaank yoouuu. I was watching other videos on how to disable the password and was pratically thre same as you but they didn't work. The trick was the one you explained: With the pin shorted hit enter on "New Password" RELEASE SHORT and hit enter again on "Confirm Password" and finally F10 to save changes. Tha did the trick.
Many Thanks my friend
Thanks you! Man I got in the bios 4 times but it wouldn't save, thanks again for the tip ! This is awesome
Please HELP.. Does it work for Lenovo T470???
@@moz_binary_deriv258 hi did you find a way to unlock t470s ? Im also having that pls help
Fellas,
Please make sure to correctly identify and locate the chip as well as the pins to short. Once this is OK, please remain determined and persevere, as it might take many tries.
Dear Arpan,
Thank you Mate, for this excellent service.
It worked for me on a T410! Ik kept holding the pins when I entered the bios after 10 trials. The pins on a T410 are pretty easy to access, when keyboard and cover are removed you should see them straight down the middle in the area where the touchpad should be.
Amazing, thank you. I bought a used t61 which had a supervisor pwd the seller didn't know, and i was able to reset it using your tutorial.
I have a t61 too. Did you have to press f1 or just short the two pins to make the bios come up?
It worked for lenovo T420... thanks for this informative video.
It works! Fantastic! Thanks! 100% teted Thinkpad W500 EEPROM P24S08 U77 and Thinkpad T61P EEPROM P24S08 U77. And I also think that the module WLAN must be installed on the board when the password is reset.
Yes! It worked! On L530. Had to make sure I found the correct chip. You also need to wait about 30s+ _while shorting the pin_ I think before pressing F1. At least, that seemed to work for me. Pressing F1 too fast just prompted me for the password
Hi bro can you help me find the chip in my L530 laptop?
This worked for me! For the T520 the chip is on top of the motherboard, so no need to remove the bottom of the case. It's basically under the touchpad, on the right side (as seen from the top.)
Same with t530
Worked perfectly on Lenovo Thinkpad t510! Thanks
💯% working after many attempts. Thank you. Lenovo Thinkpad T510.
Grat help that solved my problem. I purchased an thinkpad x301 that came with a supoervisor passoword the pervious owner didn't know about. Was a bit tricky to find the eprom tho short the two pins and a bit of patience to find the right timing to short these pins . I my case I had to wait about 1 sec. after the thinkpad logo... shorting immediately after thinkpad logo apeears resulted to a data error. But after about 20 attemps it worked as discribed. Thanks a lot for this video!
With a lot of attempts I got it in X201 Tablet, thanks!!!
where did you found the chip on X201 ?
Got it done on a T510! Thanks for the video.
Where is the location please
Did this with a Y40-80 Lenovo, it worked!
In my case I had to stop shorting the pins once the BIOS half loaded and I was able to navigate and change the password.
Thanks Arpan! I can confirm that it worked on the Thinkpad T410, great!
Thanks man! I got a defective E540 which has BIOS password, now it works like a charm (had to find where the BIOS chip is on other site) :)
Please where did u locate the bios chip
Thank you so much for your help! This worked on my t430
From all the posts I've read, they say that changing the password is impossible. I just wanted to not have a password there anymore and I followed the instructions and it worked. Was real easy. If you just want to change the password go to the supervisor password and type in your password. Then for the new password just click enter. Voila! A BIOS without a password!
Thanks bro!! Works perfect in t430. You are the best
It really worked for me. thanks for sharing the information and the steps.
Thank you, my X230 tablet uses the same IC. I managed to reset the BIOS password after a few tries.
Where are the pins on your X230?
Thks for your video,
you save my W520 .i search for month for a solution, but nothing works.
Good job.
Thanks, dude! This helped a lot!
Bless you, got working a W520 with unknown bios password, thank u very much
Thanks bro
I was tired using other methods cmos battery removal and jumper shorting nothing was working on my pc
Wasted my whole 2 days trying random methods
Finally it helped and my password got removed, thanks.
Fantastic. Worked on my L530.
What is the name of the chip?
Dude i love you
it worked on my X201
may you and your famaly live in peace and health
Works for X230i also, only needs to press F1 just after shortening pins. Thanks!
Super helpful Video. I tried and it worked perfectly! Thanks a lot great stuff!!!
mac Tevi bro... Im trying it on the t440p, do i have to wait for few minutes befor it enters supervisor mood automatically?
I have tested and worked in Lenovo R61, Thanks Arpan.
My T530 had supervisor password few years ago, of course I forgot. Your video really works. Thanks alot!!!!
Where was your chip ? Located
Thank you so much for this amazing video and for teaching us. Brilliantly done!
Masya Allah,,
you are a great person. Today my ThinkPad Edge 11 laptop is back on, and I'm looking for a way to access locked bios. thank you very much sir, success for you
It's working for my W510 yeah buddy! 😏🤙 Thanks a lot ... 😍😍😍😍😍
This worked on Lenovo ThinkPad E590 .. Thank you.
can someone explain me where I can find the eprom on E590?
Thanks, worked for me on W520
Thank you very much! I appreciate for this video :D
Hello,
It works flawlessly on an X61s. A couple of minutes to resurrect a nice little machine; Thanks Arpan ! :)
W.
I tried it and can confirm it for an Lenovo L450! It worked great, ok I needed 10 tries for the right moment..... and i had to press F1 to enter the BIOS.
hi Deldarion could you help me with eeprom location on L450. Regards.
It effectively worked for me (with a T410), I've found the chip/I, short those terminals and with a lot of attempts I got it (but it was kind of a glitch, cause I was trying and failing when suddently the sys reboot with no lock).
im not able to find chip on T410 could you please help me
on the lenovo r61i it is also working.
Thank you for an idea!
I can confirm that this worked on a T420. You don't need to keep the short until you clear the first password! After you entered in bios and you can change password, just put a new password and then reboot, enter the bios with your new password an clear it.
Thank you, Worked on T530.
It's even work on lenovo e41-15. Thank you very much bro
This worked perfectly for my W500
This worked for me. As you short it then keep pushing F1!!!!!
Thanks very much. Helped me out a lot. 👍
T500 owned. Thanks a lot.
The key tip was after setting the supervisor password blank, release the pins and only then confirm the password.
I could just hug the world that shit worked.
Confirmed working on a Lenovo R61
Thank god too I thought I bricked the damn thing.
Infosus Going to try on an R61i
My EEPROM looked a little then what was in the video. The directions were a little off for the R61 in my experience but it did work. All of my tape came off and for some reason had to reapply my own tape. I just used clear duct tape lol.
I does follow you and work nice!, all my laptop very well, thanks very much,
I have tried this on my Thinkpad T510, when the thinkpad logo appeared we have shoted 5and 6 on Eprom. But the logo stuck their untill i remove shorting. continues beep also heard at this time. Please answer.
I came here just to find the location of the EEPROM (I spent a solid hour looking for it on the board), thank you.
Confirmed to work on a bricked Lenovo W520 with error 0199 on startup. It was a bit tricky to disassemble the laptop, but thanks a lot for the useful video!
Thanks. It worked on T520.
I can confirm this works. Ex-corporate T400.
Timing looks harder than it is. You need to Hit F1 and IMMEDIATELY short the two pins. Too soon and it doesn't boot. You have done it right when the BIOS setup shows the UUID as all Fs.
Thanks.
Thank you so much! I did this on my T42, I had to do it a little different.
1. Press power button.
2. When the ThinkPad logo show, press F1.
3. Look at the processing symbol (The cylinder with an arrow)
4. When it flashes the last time before the lock usually appears, short the two middle pins on the right side of the U53 chip.
5. This got me into the bios.
6. I released the short at this point.
7. All the password settings were disabled, and i could not change anything.
8. Press F10, and windows loaded right up.
I switched it off and on to see if the changes remained and they did.
DCandVision, help! I can't get this to work on my T42. I don't have a processing symbol... no symbol with an arrow, nothing flashing. Just the entering BIOS text
Jeff McConnell
The bar with different symbols on your screen bezel. (Under your screen) There is a cylinder there, that is the symbol.
Hope this helps
@@DCandVision Thank you for the clarification - I had removed my HDD so that explains the difference, but even with the HDD in now, I cannot get your solution to work for me. And to be clear, you shorted the 2 middle pins on the right side. Not the bottom two which are SCL & SDA? I'm referring to www.ja.axxs.net/T40_series.htm It's driving me crazy!
Jeff McConnell
Yes, I shorted the middle pins. You could try to short it everytime the symbol flashes once, this will stop the processing symbol, so you have to let it go again, wait for an other flash, and repeat this. To make sure you short it at the right time.
The pins on the same side those red wires are connected in the picture, but instead of the two on the bottom, i did the two in the middle.
@Dcandvision Hi does your method work on a LENOVO YOGA 260 THINKPAD LAPTOP PLEASE THANKYOU.
I have a t420 and it worked thanks so much
same
Thank You Bro. Worked for Me, Best regards
The above method, which I doubted will work, worked on my Thinkpad X201 . After googling, I came to the conclusion that the EEPROM for the X201Tablet version is in the same location. When you search online, the wrong documentation will point you to two very tiny holes on the motherboard to be the EEPROM location which if you are trying the above method, it is impossible and won't work. It might be the right one if you programme the EEPROM . To short EEPROM, its on the back side of the motherboard near the CPU/Heatsink. You gotta listen to the instructions word for word in order to achieve the result you are hoping for. I never thought this would work but I can confirm that it worked like a charm. Another video, on RUclips suggested that you take out the CMOS battery and that was what I had initially done and it put me in a greater problem as the computer won't boot at all due to the Date/Time Error. Thanks for this beautiful video - a vitally beautiful video for my Thinkpad.
Worked perfectly for me on a Lenovo T520.
I didn't use the internal Lenovo keyboard. I used an external USB keyboard !!
Thanks à lot !!!!
just did this on a t410 and this actually works i was very surprised

Thanks for the video. It was super helpful =). I would also suggest to improve the video quality for future videos and you should be all set ;)
Very good tutorial, Do you know how to remove supervisor password on Thinkpad x100e?
Thank you very much!
Thanks for the video! For those who have Lenovo Thinkpad X230 here's the picture where the chip is located:
cloud.mail.ru/public/Hr8V%2F2mqVqc43y
You should power your laptop, wait one second, short circuit those contacts, then press F1 (it enters to bios without password prompt right away), enter the bios and do settings like in this video.
Hallo
I have lenovo X240... Is it the same..
THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU SAVED MY LIFE
Thank you for your sharing this information useful.
Hello, Arpan. When you say short the pins A & B, do you mean connect the wire to either A or B, or both by placing the wire between them. I can see it in the video but It's not clear to me how exactly you are shorting. Thanks
On the edge E430c the chip was u8. You can try shorting it out from under the cmos battery if you dont want to tear your laptop apart.. you just have to figure out which holes to stick the wires into.
Thanks, it worked for me, ibm t60 model🙂
Bro who , where did you find the chip in the mother borad
Funcionó perfecto en un lenovo r61, llevaba como 3 días sin ningún avance muchas gracias!!❤❤
Thank you ! Perfect with x220t
I also have a x220t. When you did this to yours was the process the same as with this thinkpad? The EEPROM was the same location? And the two A and B pins the same? Thank you
Hé this realy worked thanks a lot.........according to Lenovo you have to buy a new motherboard
well they don't want you to know it's relatively easy to get around the strongest password they have...
Will this work for IBM Thinkpad T30?
