Once it came back up not all of my lights continue to work and over time they all stopped working. Brilliant to see at least some reference to more basic ways of controlling stuff as well as the nerdy ways (I'm a nerd), Just one question, you say your wifi is good for 40 something feet in your garden. What the heck is that in metres ?? something that everyone under 65 years old in Europe understands? Keep up the great work.

    I started out with a strand of Govee bias lighting behind my main TV, and added more Govee products from there. I've been fairly impressed with this "lesser known" brand's products. Color accuracy is still a problem, but you learn how to 'tweak' it to get what you want.

  • @dsample
    @dsample Год назад +2

    I'm usually against WiFi-based bulbs/sockets, but I don't like that most of the sockets, like the one you linked to, are unsafe in that you can plug the neutral pin in upside down which makes them potentially dangerous with kids. This is the main reason we've got Tapo P110 WiFi sockets. They work fine with HA, and have the bonus of energy monitoring

    What I do like about Philips Hue is the possibility to daisy chain them with zigbee. As mentioned at the end of the video, with solutions like Govee, you'll need a very good WiFi signal, which is not needed with Hue.
    But yes, Hue is expensive and substandard in term of quality (got already one garden light of fours giving issues after three years).

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  Год назад

      I tested the daisy chain thing once and found it didn't extend the range at all! I was using a Hue lamp, and a hue bulb, when I took the hue bulb out on a extension reel I found it stopped responding at the same distance regardless of if the lamp was connected or not.

  • @TechRealityGlasgow

    Another great production! Here's a suggestion on a video you could do as a mid-week release... Show us how you are powering the devices from your external wall power socket, into whatever outdoor box(es) you may be using etc... I'm about to do (ok thinking about it) an outdoor garden light show myself, but only have a couple of external power points that I can use, and know that I will have to get an outdoor power strip somehow into a waterproof box... but when you want to run light further away from the house/power point, how on earth do you safely extend the cables on the likes of a Govee product?? I think this could make for an exciting project to let others see the pitfalls that could be ahead! And of course... because you suck at DIY like me, I and many others could take joy in seeing your disaster and also watching that good lady of your packing a suitcase and leaving it on the doorstep for you :) - Again, another great production Paul, always makes Saturday a great day!

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  Год назад +1

      I think my advice is likely to risk lives 🤣
      In all seriousness I think as long as connection points are properly housed in waterproof boxes and you use a proper out door extension it's just a case of getting the cables behind things so you don't wreck them with a strimmer!

    • @TechRealityGlasgow
      @TechRealityGlasgow Год назад +3

      @@paulhibbert You called this the "Live Dangerously Series" :) - I mentioned this because you see the huge plugs on the end of the Govee stuff etc, but then the cable from the power end usually looks so short! All fine and dandy when doing an unboxing or demonstrating in the house, but to see an actual install, and the pitfalls encountered I think would make interesting watching! More so with your skills :) - Maybe this is more a project for Stu :) He at least has a Gimp he fires things at, so using them as fodder to the electrical Gods would be fine :) - ONce again great video Paul appreciated.

    I have experimented with both the IKEA motion sensor and the Hue outdoor sensor. Neither is ideal. Both need to be positioned away from direct sunlight. Even a reflection from a car windscreen will trigger them. And on a windy, blowing leaves and branches will also trigger the.
    Worth also saying that the IKEA sensors can be sprayed to blend in with their background - just mask off the lense. Mine are sprayed matt black and are mainly mounted under the soffits.

    I have many govee lights throughout the house. And generally I am impressed. Just be careful when selecting a model, especially on Amazon as it can completely change the characteristics of the product that you think is in the same range as you’ve been reading. For instance I chose an Alexa controlled light strip and changed the length in the selection. When it arrived and set up I then discovered it’s not Alexa controlled!

    So I'm building a house, and while the entire inside is set with LIFX, the entire outside is... Philips Hue.
    I can understand the hype around their outdoor system. They are great, if expensive. I started with three and moved up to about 15 over time to light my garden at my current place. Including a couple of their Christmas tree lights that came out last year. The lights link up on the same cable system seemlessly, which allows for all sorts of flexible placements coming off the same power point... If you get inventive with how you run your cables. They also range extend for each other so I've been able to string them all the way down my driveway even though it's about 50m from my nearest wifi point.
    I'd struggled with all sorts of cheap garden light alternatives and so far most of the ones in my garden have survived five Australian summers. So I was happy to invest in the system for my new place...
    It's nice to see a great looking alternative, although sadly I'm too far gone as all the Philips products are sitting on my shelf ready to be installed. One thing Philips hasn't done, which I'm really mad at, is multi coloured outdoor LEDs. Those great big white snakes they have, can only be programmed to one colour at a time. Don't ask me why! Their indoor strips can do multiple colours at once. You'd thing with the outdoor strips they'd just put the indoor strip in a waterproof housing, but nooooo. So these ones look amazing and I might have to see about integrating them into my plans.
    As always, great video Paul! I often wonder if your wife is embarrassed by your antics when you're filming not enough yachts in public... Or if she encourages them 😂🤣😂

    "Power supply appropriate to your country... unless you're a RUclipsr in the U.K.": I suspect this is going to be a running gag for a while. Unfortunately, the gag is mostly at the expense of the aforementioned "RUclipsr in the U.K."
    The actual full garden effect sort of reminds me of Christmas at the Griswold's but the increasingly apocryphal teenager in me did appreciate the TikTok worthy "upbeat music." The thing that really captured my attention was the hellish landscape created by the motion-sensing routine. "Scare the burglars" indeed. Perhaps you should make the camera message "It's over Anakin. I have the high ground." (except I doubt the burglars would get it.)
    To be honest, given "preposterous garden party" mode, I'm oscillating between thinking that I wouldn't much like to be your neighbor and knowing full well that I'd enjoy the heck out of it. (Some of my neighbors think nighttime ambiance consists of "out of state" pyrotechnics. (Some fireworks are sold as "out of state" because they're not legal in your state so you have to sign an absolutely useless statement that says you're buying them for use out of state.))
    Loved the "Not Enough Yachts" bit.
    I also have to say that I really appreciate your "What's Wrong with It?" segment. It contained just the sort of things I'd like to know before (purposely) investing in Home Assocation seizure-inducing outdoor lighting.
    Great review as always. Keep up the great work. You more than occasionally make my Saturday.

    How do you connect Ikea motion sensor to Alexa? Do you need Ikea hub? Or do you use home assistant as bridge?

      I'm using HA, but if I remember rightly I think you can actually connect them straight to the amazon echo (if you have one with built in zigbee)

    😂 Another Great Video. 1. Receiving US power adapters is telling you to move to US where we can go get a beer together and talk tech. 2. Create a calendar with all of your funny photos like "on the fly" etc.

    Okay but serious question (I'm just watching and it's the first time that comes up in my mind and may be a n/a for you.)
    Do they attract bugs? I'm sooooo allergic to mosquitoes! 😭 We live in a trailer so we can't have any kind of fire in out yard, infact we barely have grass in the yard, muchless foliage or anything other then our garden fence around the yard to keep the dogs and kids in. I would love to do this when we buy a house.
    Almost pulled the trigger on getting a new modern, was thinking about you and your advice(it just works! when you just change everything back, yeah I know, but it works most of the time and I just can't bring myself to buy a new one when this works most of the time. 😭)
    Regardless, love your videos and look forward to them every week. 🥰

      ❤️ Bugs are different in every location, a lot of it is to do with how close you are to water and certain foliage. There are plants you can put in that they don't like too.
      My garden suffers with them very little, but they're still out there now and then depending on the recent weather.

    Hey Mr H, always a pleasure to watch your vids. Quick question, I can't find the link to your weather-proof box you mention. I have outdoor sockets in the garden, but they don't shut properly with the size of the various wifi plugs I own, & the ones I've seen on the market. Love the weather-proof box you mention and think that could be the solution I'm looking for. KR Daz.

    My problem with the Govee lights is that the lights themselves are water rated, however the plug is not! You HAVE to put the plug in some sort of waterproof box.

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  Год назад +1

      I'm not saying this to be mocking I genuinely don't know the answer to this... Isn't this the case for all outdoor lights? Surely there aren't plug sockets that you can leave open to the elements for a waterproof plug to be useful? I've never seen a proper outdoor socket that didn't have a waterproof flap to cover the plug. I'm only using a waterproof box because I needed a 4 bar extension and because I using an adapter that would make it too big for the proper socket housing.

    In defense of Philips Hue, "it just works" is pretty much the highest praise you can give smart home equipment.
    Not saying other alternatives aren't worth it, but Philips Hue "just works", and if you're a person who just wants smart lights without hassle, and you're willing to pay for it, then Hue is a good option.

      They’re also better due to higher lumens compared to govee.

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  Год назад +1

      The absolute opposite of that is true. Philips have the lowest lumen count of any of the bulbs and strips I've tried. Go through any of my side by side comparison videos where I used a lux meter. Govee are WAAAAAAAY brighter than Hue.
