I have been dipping since March of 2013. I wanted to give you some pointers since that it was your first time.
    - Clean your project with Pre Dip Spray or use 50/50 of rubbing alcohol and water. Using just water isn't going to be good enough to clean.
    - When you're taping leave an inch or more. The closer the tape is the more chance the tape is going to take the dip off. Also having more pulling area to take the dip off around the project.
    - When you're starting to dip, start your layers off thin. Do the first 3 or so layers very thin. Build that base up. The more layers, the more protection, easier to peel.
    - Be 6 inches away from the project. If you spray too close, it's going to run or get bubbles(like you did).
    - You do not need to wait 30 minutes for the last coat. You can remove the tape while the dip is wet. If you do it while it's dry then you have a chance of lifting the dip from the tape. There is a lot of variables to when it comes to dip dry time because of air temp, humidity.
I hope this helps you and others out to when it comes to your projects.

***** You're welcome. Once you get the process down, dipping becomes so much easier. Also dipping other things rather than just your car makes you more of a versatile dipper. It's a trial and error hobby. At least if you make an error then you can take it off and redo it. Happy Dipping!

Pretty good video. Want to make a few notes to people out there doing this for the first time. Some pretty helpful tips:
    1. Warm the cans up in some warm water for half an hour or so before you use them.
    2. Do it on a good day. about 75F out or so. Don't do it in direct sun and when it's 95F out.
    3. Clear the nozzle immediately after you are done. You're gonna lose some pressure from the can but what you will have if you don't is typically a clogged up nozzle that sprays splotchy. Turn the can directly upside down and spray til it clears.
    4. Don't do it too far but not too close either. 4-6 inches is about where you want it.
    5. There's corners you think you've covered but haven't. Definitely spraying from all angles.
First attempt at dipping my grill, I didn't clear the nozzle. I was too far away (like 8 inches) and it was very hot and in the direct sunlight so it came out looking like crap. Basically a texture clump of rubbery pieces. No good.
It holds up pretty nicely. I even hand washed over it without any issues. Just be careful not to scrub at it, or you may end up peeling it off.
I plan on doing this to my rear badges soon along with using a sponge to paint the fronts white.

  • @1duncanjohnston

great video. I tried this on my new Tesla Model 3, and my results were......mixed. The front emblem came out perfect. The rear, a little sloppy. And I found that Plasti Dip works best on BIG letters and numbers; the smaller you go, the more problems you have.

I have a suggestion for you for the q-tips. In the makeup section of Target or Walmart are the really great pointed q-tips women use sometimes to apply eye makeup so you can get hundreds of those for like $3. So you can spend your more money on your ride and less extra products for plasti-dip primers.

Just started plastic dipping my SUV emblem. It came out beautifully without any problem. This stuff is amazin and super easy to apply and peel off the excess dip once they're dried every 15 minute per coat. Seems like you spray it too close creating too much excess drip on yours. I spray from 6" to 8" and spray lightly back and forth that way it doesnt have excess coating drip and dries faster too when you apply light coat and not overspray it.

Quick tips for plastic dipping anything: after the first coat all coats should be wet, if they aren't they will leave texture. Warm up your cans if the spray seems globba. Smoothly move your can from side to side with complete length sprays. Don't stop or start in an area that isn't off the area being dipped. Lastly, when peeling be sure to peel away, not towards, the emblem or object. This will ensure that you don't damage the surface. The more coats you put, the longer it will last and the easier it will be to peel down the line. Sweet spot is around 5 to 6. Have fun! Good video for the basics :)

    • @nathanamons2187
      @nathanamons2187 8 лет назад +2

+Steve Vento if applied correctly plasti dip can have no texture. It can also be textured. It's all in how you coat it. People will go too thick and too thin. 1 50% coverage coats, 1 full coverage coat, and then 3 more fully wet coats will be smooth. If you want texture you can do 2 more light coats and allow them to dry. It's all in experimenting.

Again i'll repeat it cause some people keep saying it wont come off? That couldn't be more incorrect. Plasti-Dip is just that, spray on plastic coating, IT IS NOT PAINT. It will wear off after about 1-2 years depending on how delicate you wash your car. That being said it is totally worth it and a great product!!!

Car badges ALWAYS have polish (not Polish 🤪) buildup that accumulates over many years. I suggest a car wash using the wand sprayer and concentrate spray on the letters before doing one of these projects. This may account for many of the complaints about shrinkage. Usually premature peeling of finished project is due to insufficient prep. Taking extra time preparing the surface is the most important and often overlooked aspect of this type project.
Also, make SURE you mask off a LARGE area surrounding the project and NEVER spray in short close strokes. ALWAYS have the nozzle spraying before and after you pass the target area.

I’m pretty new to this stuff can someone explain exactly what the plasti dip is? Is it something I am going to have to reapply to my car every few months because of rain and snow? Or is it something that once it settles is good to go? How reliable is it? Is it worth doing this over a blacked out emblem replacement? Looking for the best solution to black out my badges/logo.

My neighbor paid a guy a bunch of money to plastidip his rims. First time he took it off road it all chipped and peeled. I suggest not PlastiDipping anything that is going to get beat up much from the road. Back end, doors, sure, but front bumper and stuff, probably going to get messed up

A buddy of mine did his truck's grille and after about two months the chrome was visible through multiple rock chips and tears in the Plastidip. If anything, it shows how much abuse the front of your vehicle endures with simple freeway driving. Plastidip is good stuff, but if you're going to use it on the front of your vehicle, I'd definitely suggest LOTS of coats.
