So many people tell me that they can easily understand what I say and follow along with my lessons. However, when listening to movies, music, or TV shows, it's really difficult to understand what people are saying.
I want to help you understand why this is happening. The key is familiarizing yourself connected speech, which is the reason why some sentences and phrases sound like they are one long word.
In this lesson, we are going to look at some common and simple sentences and talk about how people would say them in fast speech. I'll break it down so that you can see exactly what is happening, which will help you if you would like to speak faster. But more importantly, this is going to help you comprehend fast speech.

Thanks Wes. It's something true that when it comes to understand the movies or tv shows it becomes harder to our ears and Brain to distinguish the words and phrases. I think one other reason is that in movies we often have a lot of background sound that makes it hard for us.
I usually understand RUclips videos pretty good but movies are a whole 'nother animal. Everything is as fast as the speed of light. 😅

Thanks a bunch for making the video on connected speech and breaking it down succintely in a way that anybody can wrap their head around it. It's utterly critical that everybody master connected speech If they're itching to understand fast speaking natives. So I can't thank you enough. Please make more videos on that since such videos are pretty much scarce on RUclips.

Hi. I have problem understanding songs in English. I've been living in the U.S. for 35 years. I have college education. I started learning English when I was 12 years old. The primary language at home is English. I have no problem understanding TV shows, movies, News, and scientific/documentary programs but I have problem understanding songs. I have to look at the lyrics to understand them. Any idea? Thanks.
