- Welcome to another video from our garage VAG Technic.
This time we have this Audi S5 B8.5 with a 3.0TFSI Supercharged engine. Originally the owner just wanted a down pipe to fit what he supplied. After a few phone calls he decided to do the PCV, water pump , thermostat and carbon cleaning at the same time. Job was estimated to be two working days but it turned into a 4 days job instead because of this... Not only that , on collection the engine started making a strange noise in front of the owner . So humiliating ...
Thank you for watching

Nice to have a honest mechanic 👍
Honest mechanic😂😂😂
Sounds like a very reasonable price for the amount of parts & labor, and for the quality workmanship, it's absolute bargain.
this channel is one of the best car repair channel out there
Its not humiliating, shit can happen to anyone. what i like about you is that you don't sugarcoat anything, you give us the whole story.
The green Audis interior looks amazing
Comparing to prices here in US, I think yours are very affordable. Not to mention stellar work you provide.
Great content as ever. I thought that was cheap considering the amount of work involved with that job. Respect to you guys. 👍🏼
Thank you for your transparency, It's refreshing. Especially during these crappy times the world is going through.
Your forte of working on cars of this age and complexity is never going to be easy. Brave of the owner to be waiting to collect his car while you’re screwing it back together. The exhaust modification was very professionally done. All in all , a good job. Thanks for the education and making us aware how deep the water can be on this old Audi stuff. I sold my last Audi 15 years ago. I might get wet now and again but at least I’m not drowning 😂
The B6 S4 came out nicely, the white interior goes with the green perfectly. Lots of cool projects going through the shop
I go to car meets every week and when i see a 90s or before car it's all so simple in the engine bay. You could literally work on a lot at home. These things need so much specialist gear now.
Great work guys! The more I watch how many of these Audi's have the engine removed, the more I know I will NEVER buy one! 🙂
2.5 l 5 cylinder is the way
Not as bad as you think lmao. I have a B8.5 S5. Maintain it properly and you won’t have problems.
That's about $5800 here in Aus i think its more than a fair price considering the sheer amount of work involved plus parts . Not to mention the expertise that you carry working on these Audi's ! Im a mechanic in Australia and worked on quite a few Audi / VW there challenging to say the least . Thankyou for the videos mate !
Great work! I also agree it sounds more pleasant prior to the de-cat 👍
Not trying to tell you guys how to do your job as you clearly know your stuff but hopefully this info helps yourselves and other viewers:
The latest revision of that PCV valve with the "AH" at the end of it is only for the B8.5 facelift models (late 2012 onwards I believe).
If the original valve had "AC" at the end then the ecu needs flashed with the latest firmware to let the car know about running the slightly reduced pressure through the revised PCV breather system.
That car is a 62 plate so should be ok, but there have been instances reported where a few of the really early facelift models came with the original AC revision so it's always best to check.
Great work again and for the work involved I think £3k wasn't bad at all as that engine will be good to go for a long time as long as the owner keeps up with frequent oil changes, etc.
Resealing the timing chain covers was a smart move as well, it can be done from the top of the engine but it is really awkward due to access.
Keep up the good work guys!
You look like a Norwegian..and sound Finnish...
Very tedious work..well done..
We are working on v8 Chevy...happy we have it soo easy..well done brother...from another continent
Videos are always brilliant
I wish we had Audi specialist like VAG Technik in Australia. I can’t even get a second hand RS5 key fob reprogrammed here. Great work guys.
Love the green machine, looked like it had no orange peel in the paint.
Great job guys. Quality work. The humiliating thing, these things can happen. Main thing is you sorted it. Reason why you guys are one of if not the best, and people travel miles to have their Audi worked on by you. 🙏🏻
i work at a VAG Specialist south of the uk and did this for my mate with a stronic box it was a horrendous job
The green s4 is good to go all around for some many more years now
If only there were more workshops like yours around
the quality of your workmanship is so high, I wish you were in my area in the US lol. you would love the rates mechanics charge here, $300/h+++. I think what you did here might cost me like $7-8k USD here lmao
I agree with you, it is not the best when customers put pressure on you to get the things done quickly. We also get that quite often as most of the time they are coming from 4 hours away from as and they stay at a hotel whilst their car is being fixed. Unfortunately this is not an easy business to be in and things can't be predicted as a "3 bolt job" can turn into a 3 day job.
Well done guys and thumbs up for the attitude! ;)
Some great work and also a good example of how things can escalate with older car repairs - especially exhaust parts that have been subject to thousands of heat cycles and corrosion.
Be careful posting decat type videos though, as I was reading about an owner who had had a Golf modified similarly and reprogrammed.
He was subsequently stopped by the police due to the noise and was nicked, but they also made him say where the car was modified and the firm also got taken to court and fined £5,000!.
I believe the story was on one of Ricky's video's from RE Performance, (another great RUclips channel).
Keep up the good work.
Great job ,like all jobs though, you never know just how they might end ,love your videos, keep up the great content
Audi Spa this place is ❤ They come back rejuvenated 😁 Best Audi garage 💯
Love these videos really professional 👍
If you havent removed any timing components, try cranking the engine, remove ignition fuse and fuel pump fuses first, remember to have a towel over it to catch it dont put your handdirectly over it but it works
That air filter looks so small,
1 of the greatest VAG engines ever, had the same in my 2010 S4😊
Btw: that huge dent in the new exhaust that can’t be good
A very fair price. Modifying is $ by the hour .
Love the hot air intake! :p
How does he pass the Mot emissions test with no cats?
Not your fault the stud broke or the downpipe needed welded.
The gasket was just one of those things when working to a deadline.
nice work love the videos 👍👍👍👍
Wonderful content. Customers should know that these cars are not straight-forward, especially on UK roads with given our weather, studs rust or shear when you apply force. Do you ever use magnetic induction heaters before tackling exhaust nuts?
Love B4 btw!!
Seems very reasonable price considering 4 days labour !!
I personally think the price was fair for the works involved and parts 👍🏼
I did chains on a 15 SQ5 last year engine in, trans out. Bank2 correlation faults. Bank 2 guides broken. Replaced everything using proper tools. Engine code ccud I think? Didn't replace intake adjuster. Car ran fine. Bank 2 timing falt returns. Base timing is spot on. Remove Bank 2 cat and upper timing cover again. Replaced adjuster. Put back together and guess what? Same fault. Recheck base timing, good. Perform compression test with Pico scope. Everything looks good. Swapped timing solenoids, no change. Bank 2 intake cam tone wheel had moved just enough to trick ecu. Engine was in perfect time. Remove Bank 2 cat an timing cover for a 4th time. Remove both valve covers and supercharger. Again 4th time for everything. Removed Bank 2 cam bridge. Replaced Bank 2 intake camshaft. Reinstalled everything. Fault never returned. Welcome to getting your ass handed to you as a tech. 26 years and going. Parts manager is treating me much better. Vag tecnic is top notch.
The cam trigger wheel on the intake cam was out of sync with the cam? Are they not welded together?
@bilaltariq7819 nope. Everything is hollow cam, press fit lobes and trigger wheel..
@@aaronhempy9906 wow impressive that you found the problem, what a nightmare
Run a fuel additive regularly (as well as top quality fuel) like RedLine to keep the injectors clean… the active chemical to look out for in an injector / fuel system cleaner is PEA (Polyetheramine)
Sound was nicer to begin with
Very reasonable for what you have done
Sounds better before de-cat, imo. Horribly raspy after.
Sounds worse, costs a lot to do, bad for the environment, overall stupid mod for the owner to want to do, imo.
The s4 b6 looks mint!
Nice 🎥 man 👍
19:13 to 19:16 the PCV / supercharger coupling pipe isn't installed. Or am I blind? Great video as always!
It Was on the charger
@VAGTechnic
Sorry, my bad. I always put it on the pcv because of the locating tab... I'm worried that it won't sit correctly otherwise.
Thanks for replying!
Those small hydraulic tables look to be more handy / manouverable than the big AGA Tools table we have.
With that amount of work, I don’t think the bill is unreasonable and you clearly worked over and above. Not a criticism of the customer, but if you’re sending your car away for major work you need to be realistic - problems happen and they can delay things. The problem is a lot workshops will sit on cars and customers have to chase things through to wrestle the car back from them!
The aftermarket test pipes always sound like crap, gutting the stock cats sound way better 💯 stage 2+ ready!
For the work and time, I reckon 3K is pretty reasonable actually. Hard to have an opinion on the pipes until you sit in the car and drive it (as you mention). Resonations would drive me nuts, especially on a quality vehicle. Was the cat removal only done for the engine note or was there some other issue? How does the vehicle pass an MOT now, do they not do an exhaust quality test? I thought it was illegal to remove them?
Might bring my Volvo s80 to have flared arches and a supercharger fitted. Also want a 911 gtr whale tail fitted.
I have a 2015 185bhp A3....with 8k on clock....Will probably call for engine improvement if possible
3000 for Audi repair including engine out job? That is a very reasonable price!
Can you please tell us how you removed the injector that was stuck in the cylinder head? I’m dealing with this right now and I would like to hear from you what would be the best approach. It’s on cylinder nr 4. Please and thank you!
Does cleaning the fins on the intercooler, AC condensor and radiator make any noticeable difference?
Chevron techron fuel system cleaner (a PEA detergent) is the best at removing carbon. Tell customer to do it every 3000 miles. Oh, you make working on these complex engines look easy & hire a student to do your video editing!
These 3.0 never sound good regardless of the exhaust. Even worse with the cats off where they develop that tin can raspiness but performance wise of course it makes sense. The only B8 that sounded amazing was the 4.2. The 3.0 is just cheaper and easier to to modify for power. Great job as always though guys.
how do you get DECAT cars to pass inspection, doesn't the UK do exhaust tests?
Brill mate
9:40 why not piston soak? "nothing we can do"
Why would anyone faff around with removing the cats? Stock is the way forward.
Great video! Is a good practice to always use super unleaded fuel in my car to stop carbon buildup?
Nice video! Is there something I can do as an owner to reduce the carbon buildup in the intake ports? Any special driving behaviour, warming up etc? Thanks!
When do you recommend a good carbon cleaning on our B8/B8.5 3.0 engines ??
What about the rocker arms? And cam cover gaskets
Never did like how these motors sound without cats. Too raspy
It is unfathomable to look at the carbon build-up of these engines and their susceptibility to failure. I drive a 20 year old A8 with a 4.2 liter V8 that is not direct injection. 285,000 kilometers doesn't eat oil and the car works, without any fault notifications (yes, air suspension works great), maybe I'm lucky or cars were made very well at that time.
Finally! I de-cat video on a supercharged V6T......WE FEEL YOUR PAIN! One of the most hated jobs ever, but you've cheated and dropped the engine. Boooo! lol *jk* I have found a great solution for people who have fitted cat-less downpipes and want to get rid of the exhaust rasp. Reply to me if you need that info. It took AGES to get the setup right. 3000 pounds is a bargain for the work done and parts delivered. In New Zealand, the shops would ask 1500 pounds IN LABOUR alone to install the downpipes.
Surely you can see the cats are missing without removing anything and the noise is a big clue so what the MOT man gonna say??
Probably 'hang on a mo, I'll just fetch the donor car for the emission test'
Will there be a problem with the emission value at the technical test?
Hi, is it worth getting a carbon clean with that machine in the shop that they say dont need to disassemble the intake?
well you do a super job these cars a are very high maintenance ,not for me
Audi please bring the Avant back to USA
3k isn't that bad.
For the amount of parts bought and time spent that's not to bad. I've seen a worse repair bill.
If you can't afford to own one of these amazing cars then buy yourself a electric scooter. 😊
Ca 3000 pounds to norway ca 41 tusen, not bad ,same jobb in norway its 4000 t pounds,
Do you guys don't have the habit of adding oil retainer valves that can be placed under the PCV instead of the plugs that the car comes from factory?
I did it on my A7 with aliexpress valves and year later all good.
Where does the owner stand when it comes to the MOT? Wont it fail on emissions with no cats?
Yes it would fail a proper mot. Mot station owner here
What is a ceramic coating?
It's like wax -- for the paint -- but harder & more durable. A high quality ceramic _can_ last several years.
On my phone doesn't sound to good, raspy like when you wereca kid a used to blow into foil cupcake cups.
Great job, but did u really put old nuts on the exhaust which is in sh&t conditiond >.
"sounds" like owner wanted a V8. I've never like the sound of open exhaust V6 engines.
Buy a Lexus. Problem sorted.
All I can say, that is CHEAP parts an labour, £3000, Audi dealership would have broke your car for that much and then send it to you 🤣🤣🤣
thats suuuper cheap if u ask me :D
Don't be eating the cost of unintended consequences, you didn't design, manufacture or buy the cars, just let the customers know up front there will be unintended consequences.... it's an Audi.
Far too rasspy for a daily,
Lol .speed up the video 2 times and then he actually speaks very good English 😅😂
😂
@@VAGTechnic awesome awesome I'm always learning from you.from cape town south Africa
Those V6 are terrible engines for mapping. They run too hot they are already over stretched from factory
They actually respond very good to mapping. Plenty of them run Stage 2, around 480hp with no cooling mods. Here in the UK you really only benefit from extra cooling if tracking/dragging or kicking the arse out if it regularly. Mines has ran near 500hp/600nm for nearly 5 years with no cooling issues at all.
These engines are garbage. That's a fact and the only reason this channel is here.
What car you drive ?
I don't want to be rude, but you are complaining too much. A car mechanic needs to solve problems, not just replace parts. Come on, you are better than this. Sounds amazing 👏
@DontDrinkTheFlavorAid they did, but too many, unfortunatelys, bro, a car owner doesn't want to hear that from his mechanic, any problem comes up, what i like to hear is , we can easily sort it out, we have all the equipment, just cut a bit from the pipe, weld it back. DONE! As simple as that. People love drama and get a little more cash 💸 just because of this and that. If you know what I mean 😏
He's telling it like it is, nothing wrong with that. You said you didn't want to be rude but still went on to have a good moan..
Maybe you missed it, but I just watched someone both diagnose and do a complete job but also adapted to the extra problems that arose. All while keeping his customer informed over stuff he has no control over. Something that all mechanics must face every day. If that's not your idea of solving problems then maybe watch another channel where nothing ever goes wrong (if one actually exists)?
It looks like you (and every mechanic i have seen apart from Sreten from m539 reatorations) are allergic to torque wrench. Polish car mechanics eh. Shame on you.
According to the video we didn’t even put the wheels back on 🤣
fair play to them for staying behind late at night, i think not many others would have done it i think it shows us he really cares about his customers :) and for all the things done price was mor than fair
Really enjoy your honest videos, goes to say if i had a audi i would be more than happy for you guys to work on it...👍👍
Great stuff Thomas... so glad you talk about the things that can go wrong.. if only everything German made was perfect🙄 I really thought that bill was gonna be million pound😂😂. You are obviously getting older when you can't stand the growlers anymore😂😂
Kudos to audi for making you guys perfect the art of pulling engines from their cars lol
for what was done i think the bill is surprisingly fair. Owner will have been told exhaust bolts shear= engine out. I would trust these lads as they have pride in their work and will do the right thing and not cut corners. Would be the place to go for me with an Audi S class.
I have an S5, the price is fair but learning to do it yourself even over a month or more is gonna be half the cost. Key to owning a German car: don’t pay shops to do the work.
Brilliant video as always, unfortunate mistake on the supercharger seal but that's garage life. Do you have a merchandise link for t shirts with the V.a.g logo 🤔🤔
Audi charges $2700 for replacing an N80 valve on my CFSA, which is a $40 item and 45 min work. You guys are working for free, practically. The owner better be happy.
I definitely think you need a break from these cars - I honestly cannot believe how many hours you work
I think I speak for all your subscribers we love your videos
Oh and I'm an old dinosaur myself so prefer the Catalytic converter staying on the car sounds great as it is in my opinion
Thank you for all your efforts getting these videos out!
3000 pounds for ALL that ?!!! In Kansas that's about 8-9 thousand dollars!!!! wow...
3000 pounds it a little over $3550 USD and almost $5300 CAD. 😮😢
