had the s1000r for 2 years loved it, didnt care for its looks, but that motor was amazing, never thought I would part with it.....till I found and rode a R1200R...OMG it has changed everything, I love this bike so much. It is truly an amazing bike.
Whilst I enjoyed this review, in my opinion this is a good example of how difficult it is to be unbiased when one is financially and emotionally invested in a bike. I'm in the market for naked litre bike and rode both of these back to back last week, there is really no comparison. The Z, whilst being an absolutely awesome bike, is not the bike the S is. You were impressed by the power at around 8:30 which illustrates just how much more power there is (if the Z felt close to this, I don't think it would've had such an impact on you) and you didn't actually use the assisted upshift, if you had done I think you would've been even more impressed. The S is significantly more powerful and significantly lighter, for me, this combination produces a stark difference in the bikes and made the Z feel sluggish in comparison. In addition you dwell on the wheel base but they are only 4mm different in wheelbase, nothing any road rider could ever notice. After riding both I felt like the S was clearly significantly faster but also felt like the more advanced bike due to the exceptional tech on the bike (you didn't touch on or test the suspension on the S which is a huge deal for many). I don't mean to be disrespectful but I do feel this review is at best somewhat biased and at worst misleading. To anyone reading this, please try them out before you buy. You might still want the Z but I don't think you'd make that choice for the reasons put forward in this video.
krisknave It was just me and a GoPro having a ride out. I never set out to mislead anyone it was just my thoughts. To be honest with you the BMW did not excite me sorry it's just how it was. The Sugomi edition with the Akrapovic exhausts sounds stunning in my opinion. I do explain my exact feelings in the video saying they are both amazing bikes. I didn't use the word review because I wasn't going to get into details it was just me having a ride out with a camera that's all. As you say and I said in the video people should test ride both bikes before buying. What some people love others will hate.
Fair play, and I've subscribed so there's no hard feelings from my end. the reason I felt compelled to respond was really because I felt they were night and day, if I'd watched your video then rode them, I'd think I was riding 2 different bikes as the video suggests there's not much between them when I felt there was a huge difference, a difference which set the S apart. As you say, horses for courses. Anyway, you've got a new sub, just watched the s1000rr video, brilliant! :-)
@@krisknave im gonna agree with you i am a former z1000 owner recently tried a s1000r and the braking corner entry speed and top end rush are miles ahead of the z. gonna give mid corner stability to the BMW as well, cruise control, heated grips, how refined and linear the power is on the s1000r is. honestly its just better sorry but lets be factual brembos are better than Nissin calipers
@@angry_z_rider4275 I'm an ex S 1,000 R owner and haven't ridden the Z he's got but find it very hard to imagine it being as good in any way as that BMW. I absolutely loved mine and couldn't imagine anything being much better if at all. I loved tight twisty roads on mine too so I don't understand his implied cornering fails, or lack of equivalent ability, it was an amazing handling bike for a 1,000ccs. I got messed up while riding it by an idiot in a wagon so can't ride anything less comfortable and relaxed than a cruiser style bike now unfortunately but in 53 years riding I've never ridden anything remotely as good as that BMW.
So true about sound being a very important reason for choosing a bike. That is something that only a true bike enthusiast can understand and Harley haters will never comprehend. Ride safe.
I agree with you 150% about the sound. I had a Street Triple, then an FZ-07, and now my GSXR 600 in the last 3 years. I had to get rid of the Triumph because the exhaust config bothered my ears at cruising speed. The FZ-07 was fun, but I hate the way a 2 cylinder sounds. So I opted to forego the comfort of a naked to give me that 4 cylinder howl and speed in a GSXR instead. I am considering getting a Z1000 down the road, but now you've got me thinking S1000R as well, lol. Thanks for the vid!
After owning many bikes the sound of a bike when I open it up is everything to me. I have not tried electric yet but people say it feels so flat. I have never been called an old punk before that’s funny.👍
Certainly S1000R - I do have one, and love it! Nice torque, nice riding.. just awesome! Had installed an akrapovic and full exhaust that is about fun :)
I have an S1000R, and I agree. If you have a 2010 or newer 1000cc naked, there is no real need for an "upgrade", just as I don't see any point in replacing my -14 for the new -17 S1000R. Phenomenal bike for sure, and the competition is so close that any swap is not worth it. I think it mostly down to which you personally prefer, seating, comfort etc. As for power, yes it is pretty insane, I actually have a 500hp car, and the thrill is nowhere near the bike, I suspect you would need 7-800hp in a car to get a similar "kick" as this bike gives you.
I just got mine s1000R 2017 and what a beautiful machine, don't buy the bike if you don't have the quick shifter with it.... the sound is so beautiful.
Alan Dubbel V I am getting a GSA next and I might get one of them as well. BMW have really designed a stunning bike there and yes I need a quick shifter. Enjoy mate

Once you remove the cat, that bike sounds a lot more grunty. The cat is so restrictive, you can ride it without an exhaust can and still not sound obnoxious. for the 2017 model will it have completely different styling? I was going to get this later next year but if the new styling comes out 2017-2018 i could wait a little.
The dealership said to me that the next model is due next March. I am going to do the same I think wait to see what it looks like. If you got one then it gives you plenty of time to run it in before the summer months. I hope they improve the looks a bit
I have not ridden the Z but I've test ridden the s1000r & its a peach of a motorbike. The dash of the Z is a turn off for me personally...it looks to x-box like. Now 2020 & the s1000s is as refined as you will find in a naked bike that does everything from pottering around town, to commuting to work daily, weekend rides, touring and down to a track bike. I'm sure the Z does the same but its a degree of differences these days.
I don't think you have the one with all the options like active suspension and which power mode were you using? Mine is a 2016 and has 4 power modes, I prefer the road or dynamic mode
Is this a new bike or did hit have the first service yet? There is a difference. Also, with 160 hp on about 300 kg (bike + rider) that would be more like 900 hp on a car like BMW 520 and maybe 700 hp on a Ferrari.
FredricF it was test bike so I am not sure on the service. When I was riding and concentrating I couldn't remember the exact power to wait between a 160hp bike and a car. My Fireblade was equivalent to a 675hp car. Sorry chatting and riding is really hard to do at the same time. Thanks mate
Hi Buddy, great video! I still love my S1000 and as I only ever keep my bikes about 2yrs I will be after something new next autumn, will be interesting to see if the changes they make to the S1000R will be worth me getting a new one or trying something different, I'm guessing the looks will be very similar and they will perhaps just add a few things like the gear change blipper and cornering traction control and other bits from the RR and XR, very hard to see how they can improve it much more, ps, got my new mic to use in my lid so hopefully it will much improve my chat! Cheers, GMAN
Considering the S1000R, MT-10 and Speed Triple R. Love the character of the triple on the Speed Triple (used to have a Street), but really feeling the need to get nekkid again. Z1000 doesn't do it for me (sorry - but partly because I've had a Z1000SX and I just didn't feel any character from the engine). The acceleration of the S1000R is enticing, but not sure that "character" element is strong enough for me. Completely agree with your thoughts on it being more important how it delivers the power and makes you feel, rather than baseline numbers too... Oh the choices :D
YarekBalear if you can wait a bit of time the new 2017 BMW 1000s looks stunning. I am looking forward to having a go on it and seeing it at the bike show. I love the way the MT 10 looks though.
Nice review mate, and good point regarding the brake fluid reservoir on the BMW.. it looks like a sample bottle ffs! I'd go for the BMW as the looks of the Z are too mad max for me, plus that engine is a peach 😁 ride safe and thanks for the post. 👍
chris murray What I have learned about people on RUclips doing bike reviews is this. You could put ten people on both of these bikes and everyone would be a totally different opinion. It's often down to what people are used to and have ridden before. (Expectations are so different). I loved the s1000 and I think the new one looks really good. For me I didn't want all of the tech on my naked bike side of things. I am going to buy the S1000rr as the hole package works for my sports bike needs. That's just how it works for me and I hope it came across on the vid I had one hour to film. Thanks mate
Hey Buddy ... How tall are you? Ive been wanting an Z1000 for a while... But at 6foot1 i feel its a bit too compact for me.. Whilst i fit comfortably on the s1000r . But i LOVE the Z1000 looks. Ohh and can we please get that Z1000 vs GT-R video ?!
I am 5 foot 9 inch. You should go and take one out for a test ride. Hopefully they do some adjustments to the s1000 styling on the next model. I followed my brother on the bikes and I could see people turning around to get a good look at the Z1000.
Bjørn van Rumpt I think it would be an ideal first 1000cc bike as it's so easy to ride and be in total control of. Naked bikes have the power now and they have become so popular. I love it
i really don't know what to buy z1000 - looks better 1000r -more power -more safety electronic -quickshift you get much more on the s1000r for the price but z1000 looks just awesome
That's exactly how I would feel about it. If it was me and I could wait I would see what happens in March when the new BMW comes out. If you park them beside each other people always pick the z1000 for looks.
Yes they are apparently. The salesman said that next March something new is coming. Now I don't know if its a totally new design or what he couldn't tell me.
yep, there are no more in production - the only one's available are the ones left in the dealers. The new version has to be Euro4 compliant, will have a 5hp increase and a re-designed front end. Will be at the NEC for Motorcycle Live.
Yes a revamp, same bike effectively but some updates for euro4 safety compliance. Probably an increase in price too....not too much though because the MT-10 is killing sales right now.
AnotherWayFilms it' was wobbling around to much that's the thing I didn't like about it. Someone said it was to bring air bubbles to the top but I am not sure about that
i agree the s1000r is real nice, but if i had a z1000 i wouldn't switch iether. i wanna have a z1000 one day too. and a cbr1000rr, triumph daytona 657 and a bmw r nine t
Isn't the current RR also called a Fireblade? That's pretty tech heavy. But, I hear ya. I had an 2002 RC51 that didn't have much in gizmos and I wish I still had that bike today.
Max Forster I now have a new top spec GS 1200 Adventure triple black. I sold the z1000 which I wish I had kept it to be honest . I might get something sporty to go in the garage as well.
If you base owning a bike just on how it sounds then you not really into the bike, more about image maybe. There's so much more to worry about than sound, you can tune the hell out of the sound. Lose the cat, install full system.
Lorenzo von Matterhorn Are you talking about the 2017 model? I'm thinking about getting one and I may go for the 2016 they will be a few thousand less next year.
E.S. Slc Yes man, i'll be buying the new model. 2016 is good too and if you buy a 2016 you can update the mapping and get Cornering ABS from the new model ;)
I prefer the S1000R. The Z1000 is way cheaper. we have a lot of deals here for $7500 asking price. the don't like the plastic on top of the tank on the Z1000, it make it look cheap.
Why would anyone get a z1000 over a s1000r you dont get the brembos on the z you dont get the blipper you dont get the quick shifter, no heater grips no suspension settings.... Just doesnt make sense. I choose the bmw over the kawa even though kawa is my favorite bike manufacturer.. Just dont think you compared it like i see it. Good vid bud.
"The last brand new one"? Those tyres say not new and it certainly won't be after you've ridden it either. Also brand new they have the revs limited to 6,000rpm for the first 1,000 ks on the 2014 models and I believe on the latest ones they've taken that up to 9,000rpm. If that is you WON'T get a real feel for it's power because it's from about 9,000rpm that it REALLY gets going. It's NOT comparable to a 500 hp car! That 500 hp car will almost certainly weigh at the very least 1.5 tons and probably more making it's power to weight ratio around 320 odd hp per ton while even with a 100 kg rider making your total weight 300 kgs you've got a power to weight ratio of around 530 hp per ton, quite a lot more and I have seen one beating a Buggatti Veyron on a rolling start repeatedly.

Just curious, when singing the ABC song in the UK, does it end in "W, X, Y, and Zed"?
Yes, zed it is. We have the same in Canada.
ok, cool.
yes, zee is an americanisation. In the English language it is pronounced ZED. Do americans call a zed one a zee one? That would be stupid when the rest of the world knows that ZED is how ya say it bro
joe bloggz Bee, Cee, Dee, Eee, Gee, Pee, Tee... Zee. Not Bed, Ced, Ded, Eed, Ged... Zed. Nah man, Zee is it. It's called consistency! Lol. Just say it how you want, but we are the improved version right? ;)
Hi! Where can I buy the tape to the catalizer scape??
Did you find the s1000r easier to turn in corners than your bike? I found the z1000 harder to turn in corners.
Speaking of sound, what's the z1000 like on overrun?? I like to hear some cracks and pops etc 🤘
How does it compare as far as the torque and acceleration to the fireblade.
I'm thinking about trading my blade for the S1000R. Thank you
I found a 2014 s1000r with 35k mile and they want $8,000 for it.Is that a good or bad deal?
for the 2017 model will it have completely different styling? I was going to get this later next year but if the new styling comes out 2017-2018 i could wait a little.
The dealership said to me that the next model is due next March. I am going to do the same I think wait to see what it looks like. If you got one then it gives you plenty of time to run it in before the summer months. I hope they improve the looks a bit
Buddy's Insight More Shark gills! ahaha hopefully I will wait and see too :D
what's the music at the beginning please?
Evert Hertsenberg How do you like your bike? Thank you
I just sold my CBR1000RR and I'm thinking about the S1000R.
Cheers, GMAN
lol try now with the 2021 model. they didnt change it really till now
who makes the belly pan?
RJ doesn't just change the silencer he puts a full exhaust system on all his bike's . which give's better sound & performance also less weight.
Thanks for that I didn't realise he did the hole thing
Aren't they the same length?80.7 inches.
I was thinking about one of these also but I went for the 2016 BMW R1200R after
Tell us what your thoughts on that bike if you would please?
Interested.
Trust me. You must be very, very careful when choosing this bike. Because it will transform you into a hooligan.
haha just got one and I agree
So true 😂😂😂
"Bloody hell!"
Great stuff.
Nice review mate, and good point regarding the brake fluid reservoir on the BMW.. it looks like a sample bottle ffs! I'd go for the BMW as the looks of the Z are too mad max for me, plus that engine is a peach 😁 ride safe and thanks for the post. 👍
Lovely to see a sunny day in Oxfordshire while I sit in -figures in shitty Canada.
Try the MT10 and let us know what you think.
Great bikes! Have u tried a MT 10? Just curious about your thoughts.🤔
I own the s1000r and it's on a different level to the z1000 which I have rode.
chris murray What I have learned about people on RUclips doing bike reviews is this.
I followed my brother on the bikes and I could see people turning around to get a good look at the Z1000.
diff between naked and sports bike..in which category u would put r1,ducati panegale and then this bmw s1000r..?????
Would the Z1000 be something tomstart with as a first bike?
Bjørn van Rumpt I think it would be an ideal first 1000cc bike as it's so easy to ride and be in total control of. Naked bikes have the power now and they have become so popular. I love it
Bjørn van Rumpt No.
i really don't know what to buy
z1000
- looks better
1000r
-more power
-more safety electronic
-quickshift
you get much more on the s1000r for the price but z1000 looks just awesome
That's exactly how I would feel about it. If it was me and I could wait I would see what happens in March when the new BMW comes out. If you park them beside each other people always pick the z1000 for looks.
have z1000sx 2011 them bmw 1000r are sweet
what do you mean last one in the country? are they discontinuing it?
Yes they are apparently. The salesman said that next March something new is coming. Now I don't know if its a totally new design or what he couldn't tell me.
+Buddy's Insight noooooooooo!
yep, there are no more in production - the only one's available are the ones left in the dealers. The new version has to be Euro4 compliant, will have a 5hp increase and a re-designed front end. Will be at the NEC for Motorcycle Live.
+Big T oh, so it will still be called the S1000? to sum it up, is it a revamp?
Yes a revamp, same bike effectively but some updates for euro4 safety compliance. Probably an increase in price too....not too much though because the MT-10 is killing sales right now.
try an aprilia tuono also
One of the best sounding bikes in my opinion. Can't get enough of that V4.
Is it me or is the brake reservoir jiggling much more than spec?
AnotherWayFilms it' was wobbling around to much that's the thing I didn't like about it. Someone said it was to bring air bubbles to the top but I am not sure about that
i agree the s1000r is real nice, but if i had a z1000 i wouldn't switch iether.
i wanna have a z1000 one day too. and a cbr1000rr, triumph daytona 657 and a bmw r nine t
And a KTM 950R and an R1 and and and....
yes i have to give in i'd also love the new r1m, and the s1000rr, and the superduke gt, and the r1200gs.. the list goes on and on and on XD
+Daniel Schlegel For now I have to settle with an FZ1 Gen 1 with goodies. til then
but my ultimate dream is the fireblade despite it's lack of tech
Isn't the current RR also called a Fireblade? That's pretty tech heavy. But, I hear ya. I had an 2002 RC51 that didn't have much in gizmos and I wish I still had that bike today.
the sound over the hp delivery???????????????
You need to ride and review the mt10
damn auto correct. ..vibrate? it looks loose?
I assume you never went with a BMW, do you still have the Z1000
Max Forster I now have a new top spec GS 1200 Adventure triple black. I sold the z1000 which I wish I had kept it to be honest . I might get something sporty to go in the garage as well.
Don't know if you are being honest with yourself. The z is good but that bike is great.
The day I have the money to buy one and not care about it when I drop it, I will set my GPS to the nearest BMW retailer.
nice review of a cracking bike.
If you base owning a bike just on how it sounds then you not really into the bike, more about image maybe. There's so much more to worry about than sound, you can tune the hell out of the sound. Lose the cat, install full system.
And to think that with minor mods and a flash, the BMW can get 20 HP boost.
The BMW for me, thinking of trading my RR for the R
The next generation S1000R will be released in October buddy ;)
Lorenzo von Matterhorn Are you talking about the 2017 model?
I'm thinking about getting one and I may go for the 2016 they will be a few thousand less next year.
E.S. Slc Yes man, i'll be buying the new model. 2016 is good too and if you buy a 2016 you can update the mapping and get Cornering ABS from the new model ;)
I prefer the S1000R. The Z1000 is way cheaper. we have a lot of deals here for $7500 asking price. the don't like the plastic on top of the tank on the Z1000, it make it look cheap.
Quang Lam in the uk, the s1000r is only £400 more
Why would anyone get a z1000 over a s1000r you dont get the brembos on the z you dont get the blipper you dont get the quick shifter, no heater grips no suspension settings.... Just doesnt make sense. I choose the bmw over the kawa even though kawa is my favorite bike manufacturer.. Just dont think you compared it like i see it. Good vid bud.
salut belle prestation video bravo. song music please thank .ride safe peace my friend
i have an fz1, would prefer the s10O0r.
looking at a 2014 for $10k.
Wait, what? A 56.5 inch Kawasaki wheelbase is a "lot shorter" and nimbler than a 56.7 inch BMW wheelbase? You must be a lot more sensitive than me :)
