Sublimate a Dollar Tree Glass Cutting Board (no paper cleanup required)

- Опубликовано: 20 ноя 2024
- I did a video recently where I sublimated a couple of cute gnomes on a glass cutting board from the Dollar Tree. It turned out super cute, but I had to clean a lot of paper off the back of the cutting board that was stuck to the vinyl. In this video, I tried a new brand of sublimation paper and it peeled right off the cutting board without any cleanup necessary. I had seen other people on RUclips use it and couldn't believe the difference, so I just had to try it. Boy am I glad I did! A viewer helped me find this image later and I have since purchased it but as of August 2022 that Etsy Shop no longer exists. If you google "blue flower faith" and look at images, you will find the design. Also, I found it in another Etsy Shop today. www.etsy.com/l...

Thank you so much!!! I am glad you found it helpful.
Me too!
So smart with the magnets on your heat press for the paper!! I am going to do that!
Thank you so much!!!
I watched your prior video yesterday and watched this video today. I have to say Marilyn you have the most soothing and comfortable voice ever. I really appreciate you didn't bring your dog/cat on the video for 5 minutes. This is exactly the video I was needing since I bought 4 cases (yes, cases) of the DT square cutting boards. You rock!!! (although now I'm concerned about the pictures fading and the toxic chemicals that can come through.) A problem for another day. Thanks, again you're amazing!!!
Thank you so much, Carol, for your inspiring comment!! I appreciate it very much.
Great video...not too much talking and easy to follow. I saw a guy wet hit first before he pulled it off. I've had these cutting boards for years and was trying to figure out to utilize them.
Thanks so much! If I use other paper, I have to wet them down also. They are fun to make and I love that you can customize them.
1. This was a phenomenal video
2. You are a phenomenal instructor
3. The fact that you have replied to every comment on this video speaks volumes.
Definitely subscribing to your channel! Thanks for being you!!
Thank you so so much Alisha!!! Such a wonderful comment to read!
Thank you for explaining everything so well! I have watched several videos on this subject and no one ever explained it as well as you. Thank you!
You're very welcome. Thanks so much for taking time to watch and comment!
I agree. She explained so well. I watched 3 videos this morning and was thinking I would not be trying it. but now I feel like going to the dollar tree and grabbing some cutting boards.
@@sarah28681 go for it! These are so fun and inexpensive to make.
I watched the man who suggested the Rapid Tac, have to lay his glass cutting board in the sink and work like crazy to scrub off his paper. Thanks for your paper suggestion.
That's what I had to do on my first cutting board so was happy to see a video recommending this paper as well:)
You have a relaxing voice. I listened to your video even though it was not what I was looking for. :)
Thank you for such a nice comment! So sweet:)
Wow! My mind is blown! I never knew you could use vinyl to sublimate like that! Also, that is THE best transfer paper! I have a massive roll of it because I refuse to use anything else.
Yes, it is a fun way to make a unique and inexpensive cutting board or trivet! I don't know if all vinyls will work, but the oracal 651 does so I just stick with that. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!!
I have watched so many videos Sublimating on DT Cutting Boards. Thank You, it was so spot on and concise and yes your voice is perfect for videos
Thank you soooo much for your feedback!!! I tend to cringe when I hear my voice, so I am glad it is not annoying to others:)
A little dish soap and water works great.
Thank you for the suggestion🙂
Beautiful! Your tutorial is perfect! I just made a couple and wanted to tell you that I did 1 with Oracal 651 and the other with just some cheapie vinyl from a bundle I bought from Amazon. They both worked perfect! And fyi...if you screw up after pressing...(I did 4 x 90 minutes!) The vinyl comes off very easily and very cleanly. It was about an hour later, so it was completely cooled. Thanks again!
I am sorry my reply is so late. I thought I had replied to your message but apparently I failed to get it out. I really appreciate you letting us know that the non-Oracal vinyl worked well! I appreciate it.
Thank you for the video. At first I thought the vinyl was melting and sublimation print was not coming through but all worked out with more time…
That is great!!! These are so fun and inexpensive to make!
@@MakingwithMarilyn yes they are!
Awesome video
Thank you so much!!!
I appreciate your videos and they have helped me so much, especially the sublimation on the glass cutting boards. I follow your process and it works very well. I have noticed that over time, a few of my trivets are getting fuzzy (for lack of a better word). They used to be crisp and clear and now they are a little muddy over time. Wondering if you have any input about what I could be doing wrong. Thanks in advance.
I think it is a result of the hack. I believe the ink migrates a bit in the vinyl over time. For a hack, I think it is a great project, but I would not sell these due to that issue. If it gets to where you do not want to use it, you can soak it for a long time and get the vinyl off to make another one.
@@MakingwithMarilyn thanks for your reply. Wondering if you’ve ever used transparent vinyl and if they do the same thing over time?
Great video. I’ll try this tomorrow.
Thank you!!! Good luck with yours!
Marilyn, this turned out beautifully!
Thank you!!!
That is so pretty, tfs.
Thank you so much!
I ❤ your tutorials! So easy to understand!
Thank you so much!
Very pretty
Thanks so much!!!
Good morning Marilyn! I ran across this video while trying to decide what to make for gifts. I think this is it! Quick, easy and cost effective. Thank you for the awesome video.
Thanks for watching Stacey!!! Yes, these are so much fun and I love that you can customize them any way you want.
OMG I have to try this! Thank you ever so much for the video
Thanks so much for watching! These are so much fun and I love that you can personalize them for special events. It is just a hack so doesn't last forever the way a "real" sublimation blank does but they are really fun to make.
Wow can't wait to try this tomorrow!
Yes, other than getting the vinyl on without bubbles, it is a super fun and easy project. If you have issues with your vinyl, I have heard of people just spraying a little water on and then squeezing it out. Let me know how it goes.
Girl you are amazing! I have been wondering what I have been doing wrong with my plate sublimation. Thanks to you and this video, I figured it out. Amazing! thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!
You are very welcome! Thank you for taking the time to leave such a positive comment! I really appreciate it🙂
what was you doing wrong?
@@RainorShine1 I was not rotating my plates
It's gorgeous!
Thank you so much!
Beautiful. Can this be done without a heat press? Are you able to use the cricut hand held heat press for iron on vinyl?
You can use the Cricut easy press for iron on vinyl. I think you would need the easy press 2 or later for sublimation due to the heat required. It might be difficult to keep even pressure against the cutting board for long enough to do this process, but might be worth a try. If you do try it, let me know how it comes out. Thanks for watching!!!
@@MakingwithMarilyn thanks Marilyn
Thanks for explaining this in detail. It came out Great
Thank you Connie🙂
WOW, thank you for the great video. I’m just getting into sublimation, so something new to try. This is the first time I’ve seen using vinyl. Need to give a try.
Get ready to be addicted!!! It's so much fun:) Good luck with all of your new projects. I just ordered some new things from Amazon to try.

What a neat idea!
I wish I could take credit for thinking of it:) I saw someone on RUclips use this process, so I decided to try it myself. This is the second video I have done using the process and I love how it turned out. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Very helpful video. I'm anxious to get all the supplies I need to try it, myself.
You said you used TexPrint R paper, but the link you included is for TexPrint DTr Heavy paper. Which one should it be?
Interesting. The paper I bought was TexPrint R but the link now goes to another paper even though it used to go to the TexPrint R paper. Amazon must have changed something. Thank so much!
@@MakingwithMarilyn Thank you. I just wanted to be sure to get the right thing. Great videos!

I came across your video and loved your tutorial method. Just a joy to learn from your video. Thank you
Thank you so much Anisa!!! I appreciate it.
Beautiful!
Thank you very much!!!
Thank you for sharing. Do you need something to make it waterproof or hand washing only?
I wash mine with a soapy dish rag and then rinse it off under the faucet. I haven't done anything to it other than shown in the video. Thanks for watching!!!
Marilyn....I was wondering what your thoughts are on trying to use the DTF film and powder and putting in on a glass cutting board from dollar tree??
If you want it for decoration only, it might work to put it on the back (smooth) side since once the adhesive powder cures, it is pretty clear. Even for just decoration, I feel like it would not stick well to the pebbly textured top. If you try it, I would love to hear about your results!
Good video thanks looks good ❤
Thanks Jessie!
Ok great video question.. i didn't mirror my image so why did my image show up backwards? The writing is backwards what did I do wrong? Other than that it turned out beautifully tk u for your time
Did you put your vinyl and image on the bottom side of the cutting board but image facing up?
Thank you for making such a detailed video.
Thank you so much!!!
That was so cool!
Thank you so much!!!
great demo ! I wonder if you can "wash" the glass after you added the vinyl and sublimation print ?
I use a soapy dish rag and wipe off anything on it, and then rinse it under the faucet. I don't think it would fare too well in the dishwasher but have never tried it. Thanks so much for watching!!!
Do you think if I used the vinyl on a ceramic tile and then placed my print face down on the vinyl it would work the same?
I am not sure, but what I have done and have seen others do is to add lamination film to ceramic tiles and then sublimate onto that. I have only done this on white tiles, though. Some people use the 3M lamination pouches and pull them apart. I prefer this really thin laminating film. amzn.to/37bHNf0 If you end up trying the vinyl, I would love to hear if it works for you:)
Thank you for sharing
Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you so much for sharing! Is it washable?
I just run mine under the faucet and use a soapy washcloth to clean it off. I would not put it in the dishwasher or soak it for very long.
For oracle 651 vinyl does it matter if it's glossy or matte?
I have seen others say it doesn't matter, but I've only used this one.
I loved your video. It is so clear to understand. I couldn’t wait to get to Dollar Tree. Our Dollar Tree doesn’t have the trivets. Could I ask where you got your design or did you make it? Thank you.
Thank you very much! I got the design off of Etsy. Search ETSY for Faith PNG Sublimation and I believe you will find it. It looks like it is a different seller, but the person I bought it from on Etsy no longer has it listed.
I also saw someone use windex and it also worked well. FYI
Thank you for letting us know Regina!
Hi Marilyn, great tutorial! I hope I'm not being redundant with my question since I didn't read all the comments. I use dye-sub cutting boards & they are super durable but quite expensive, so I would like to try the vinyl method you showed.
My question is, are these boards dishwasher safe, or does the vinyl come off?
I have never put mine in the dishwasher. I just wash the top with a soapy rag and rinse it off under the faucet. I don’t think they would do too well going through the dishwasher in the long run.
@@MakingwithMarilyn That was quick!! LOL Thanks for the reply. When I do the dye-sub boards, I know that the dishwasher is ok, but I was concerned about the vinyl.
Love this image and the word Faith! Can you tell me where to get the image and what font is the word faith? I don't have a way to sublimate, but have another idea for making a wall hanging.
I bought the entire design (flower and word) off Etsy, but I checked my link to it and the store is no longer on Etsy. Originally, I found the image online by googling images. When a viewer saw it, she let me know where to get the file, so I bought it. You might be able to find the image on google. (added later - I just did a google search for "blue flower and faith" and found it.
@@MakingwithMarilyn Thank you very much! I will search it.
I found the image in another Etsy Shop www.etsy.com/listing/1149239693/faith-png-sublimation?ref=cart
Thank you for this video! So clever and it’s easy to follow.
Thanks so much!!
Thank you so much for this! I have already made several. Someone mentioned doing this on FB and said that the image faded after several months, have you noticed that at all?
Someone asked me about that awhile back so I got it out and looked at it. It's possible that it has faded a little, but nothing really noticeable. I assume if you use it as a heating block, it would fade from the heat. I don't sell mine and I often pull the vinyl off (after letting it soak in water a few hours and it's still tough to get off) after a few months to put a new design on, so it would not bother me if it were to fade given the inexpensiveness of it.
@@MakingwithMarilyn Thanks for your reply! :)
Great video! Where did you got your mats for yout heat press?
They actually came with my press. Here is one that appears to be similar though a different color. There are a few different ones on Amazon in varying sizes. Good, informative video. I just want to add that normally with sublimation printing you would reverse/mirror the image before printing but with this method/item you do not reverse/mirror it....not sure if you mentioned that. Great job.
Thank you! I am not sure if I did but even if I did, repetition is a good thing when learning new concepts:) Thanks for watching!
absolutely stunning!! this is such a great idea. thank you

how does this do with washing, I'm guessing a person wouldn't put it in a dish washer? thanks, great tutorial!
I just wash the top off with a damp soapy rag and then rinse. I don't soak it at all.
@@MakingwithMarilyn ok thank you
Thank you so much!
You are very welcome! Thank you for watching Cheryl!!!
I have read people say after a few months the image gets blury .. how long these have lasted for you ? And have you tried the laminate method?
I have had varying results. I have one that I did at least two years ago and it looks great (not quite as perfect as the day I did it, but close), but I have had two others that became blurry after some months. If I were selling these, I would use real sublimation blanks but for fun things for my home or family, they are really fun to make.
Love your video! When I click on the link for the image it says it's no longer available. Are you able to share it? TY
I purchased it so am not able to share it on, but google "blue faith flower" and click on images and you will find something you can work with. It's this image but you will have to be able to manipulate it. Let me know if you have any questions about it.
I found it in another store www.etsy.com/listing/1149239693/faith-png-sublimation?ref=cart
@@MakingwithMarilyn Thank you!!
Hi!! I tried your method and one turned out great and then the other after putting the vinyl on with the tack you mentioned it was perfect no bubbles then I put it in the heat press for 15 sec like you did and it came with some bubbles. And some where big and caused the vinyl to crease.
Can you remove the vinyl anyway or heat the image off?
Oh no! I am sorry that happened. Heat will cause any little bubbles to expend. If you soak your cutting board in water for awhile, you can pull it off. It’s not real easy to do but I have definitely done that.
Did you press it with vinyl side down? Permanent vinyl can't take direct heat.
My board is more like 8" so should I make the vinyl round 8" and then the sub a tad bigger or still do the vinyl round at 7.75 and the sub a tad bigger? I'm still pretty new to sublimation. But now I know why people want the bigger print printers. lol
I would make the vinyl just slightly smaller than the board so it doesn’t accidentally show a bit from the back. And then I would make the print slightly larger than that so it goes just beyond the vinyl.
@@MakingwithMarilyn Thank you so much!!! I'm so glad I found this channel. :)
Could you leave the cutting board overnight before removing the sublimation? I'd like to do a few at a time, production line style.
I am not totally sure, but I imagine you could. If you try one out to test it, let us know how it works out and I am sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Hopefully these cutting boards are safe to heat. And not causing stress and cracking to happen at a later date.
I haven't had any problems with any that I have done. If eventually one that cracks, the vinyl will keep it from falling all apart and being dangerous and I have very little money in it. However, if you aren't comfortable, they do make actual sublimation cutting boards that you can buy from companies like Conde (DyeTrans), etc. that you could use. Always a good idea to be cautious.
Thank you so much for sharing! That was amazing and turned out beautifully.
Thanks so much! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!
Thank you for the video! What a great image & it came out beautifully. Just to clarify for myself, you put the vinyl sticky side down on the smooth side of the cutting board. Then you press the image on what would have been the "front" of the vinyl. The image will show through the vinyl to the top of the glass?
Yes that is correct. Thanks so much for watching!!!
@@MakingwithMarilyn thank you for sharing your knowledge w/us!!
Thank you this is great! Just to confirm from bottom to top it is sublimation paper, vinyl and then glass? So the top platen is pressing against the glass and not the sub paper? thank you!
Yes, that is correct. Since the sublimation print is on the bottom and you are heating from the top, it takes a lot more time than a typical sublimation project.
Amazing!
Thank you!!!
Thanks so much for sharing. Do you have to mirror your sublimation image?
Thank you! Since you are putting the image on the bottom and it is coming up through the vinyl, you do not mirror it.
beautiful
Thank you!!!
Great video!
Could you place this in a dishwasher?
I have not tried to, but I don't think it would fare too well. I just wipe the top of mine off with a damp rag. Thank you for watching!!!
Thank you for the video. You mention that the vinyl is HTV but the Amazon link says Permanent Matte, (I am still new to sublimation and vinyl) is HTV the same as Permanent Matte ?
Thanks so much for letting me know that I said HTV in the video. It is definitely adhesive vinyl and not HTV. I watched back through the first half of the video and I say the right type of vinyl there. Do you remember generally where I called it HTV? I want to add words to correct the mistake so that it doesn't confuse people. Thanks again!
So wait...I am in process of getting my stuff to start sublimation so I know nothing and why I have been watching videos...so the sub ink basically infuses with the vinyl to make the image visible? This is very interesting
Yes. It doesn't work with all vinyl, but it does work with the vinyl used in the video. This is a fun, very inexpensive and easy project to start with. My advise is when you get started, practice on inexpensive items and scraps of polyester fabric before working with your more expensive blanks. Good luck and reach out if you have questions along the way.
Can you share where you got the svg for this product?
Yes, I got it off of Etsy. The store I bought it from no longer exists, but I found another store that has it and have a link to the design in the video description. Happy crafting!
I can't find if you mention what kind of printer you use to print your image. I have converted an Epson ET2720 to a sublimation printer. Would that work with the TexPrint R paper?
I used an Epson 2760 that I converted to sublimation. Yes, your printer will work with the TexPrint R paper. TexPrint has a couple different papers, and someone else told me that the other one (the one I did not use) sticks to the vinyl. So, be sure to purchase the paper used in the video if you decide to get some and let it cool down some before you pull the paper off. Otherwise, it will stretch your hot vinyl. Thanks for watching!!!
Where did you get that wonderful large squeegee? It is perfect for projects like this. I haven't been able to find anything like it.

Does your heat press heat on the bottom and the top?
@@eliazarsoto527 no, just the top.
Did u place the vinyl facing down on to the sublimation? Or is vinyl side facing up
The vinyl was added to the glass cutting board first. Then I placed the sublimation print under and against the vinyl. The vinyl is on the bottom of the glass cutting board, so facing down. Let me know if this did not answer your question and thank you for watching!
I had bought a different spray adhesive that was repositional. The vinyl went on perfect but after i pressed it bubbles appeared. Does this happen with rapid tack?
Rapid tac isn't really an adhesive, it is just a liquid that helps you be able to move your adhesive around before you heat it to the surface you are putting it on. As. long as you squeegee out all of the liquid, the vinyl goes on smoothly. But, you do have to make sure you squeegee it all out, just like when you are removing air from under the vinyl. I think I may have shown a close up of this cutting board after using the rapid tac. It was very very smooth.
ThankS for the video MWM
Thank you so much!!!
Will most vinyls work or does it have to be that specific type or bond?
I have only tried this brand, so I'm sorry I can't answer the question.
Did you mirror the image on this? :) I did one today using laminate sheets. Great video
No, since I put the vinyl on the bottom and the image is coming up through it from the bottom, you do not mirror it. Thanks for watching!!!
Thank you so much!! Ive been making these but you have shown me some new tips!! . I'm worried about the pencil line around the image--do you know what happens if your pencil mark gets "subbed" in error ? what happens ? would you see a pencil mark... ? or does it not seep through the vinyl
I make sure to keep the pencil mark outside what will actually touch the glass because I had concerns about that as well:) Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment!
If the pencil line gets in the glass it becomes part of the design.
@@JL-il6vk thank you so much
Is there any way to do this without a heat press? Obviously I don't have any experience. 😉
I'm sorry Julie, but I don't think so. I wish I had better news for you.
Where can I buy the spray u used on the rabi tac at??
There are various sizes available amzn.to/40NIVfj
The paper specifies for sawgrass and another printer… are we able to use it with an Epson tank printer?
Yes, I only have Epson ecotank converted printers and it works fine.
Can you give us an update on how these still look after time?
I still have the glass cutting board. The image is not as crisp as it was when I made it, but it still looks nice. For a hack so that I could make customized cutting boards, I am still happy with it. If I were selling sublimation cutting boards, I would go with the more expensive blanks.
What sublimation paper did you use? That came off with no issues
I used Tex Print R paper. Yes, it came off so cleanly!!!
Can you use cricut infusible ink sheets with this method?
I have not used infusible ink sheets with the method, but I feel very confident they would work. The issue I see is that the marks around the ink pieces and take that you use may show in the texture of the board. They probably shouldn't show from the top side though. Let me now if you try it.
Can you put the vinyl on the plate, use infusible ink then heat press?
You can probably replace the sublimation print with infusible ink, but I haven't actually tried it. Let me know if you decide to go for it!
@@MakingwithMarilyn thx I will
Ink jet print or laser print? Are both fine for the image?
It is an Ink jet printer that has sublimation ink in it. This project requires sublimation ink.
Do you seal or otherwise protect the sublimated side?
No, I didn't. Since it doesn't come in contact with food, I didn't worry about it. To clean the top, I just use a soap washcloth and then rinse it under the faucet. Thanks so much for watching!
Will this work on ceramic tile, or do you recommend another method
You can definitely sublimate on a ceramic tile, but you would need some type of coating for the sublimation to "take". Some people use clear laminate film on them and others apply a couple coats of polycrylic. The polycrylic method takes longer and your paper will likely stick to it, so would need to be rinsed off. I remember seeing a small RUclips channel named "The Oily Crafter" sublimate on tile, if you want to search for their videos. Of course, you would not use them to cut on since the image would be on the front instead of coming through from the backside. Thanks for watching!!!
