I just cleaned the throttle body on my 2011 Hyundai Sonata and this video helped a lot. It was the first time to clean the throttle body and was shocked at the amount of build up inside. Now the car runs like new and simply amazed at the difference a simple cleaning can do. Thanks for the video!
I have a 2011 sonata as well. Having some rough idling noise. Fuel injector cleaner helped somewhat. But looking for a better solution. was rough idle the issue you were having and did it come back?
Don't need to relearn the throttle body after?
What issues were you having before cleaning the throttle body?
Thanks for this comment! My hyundai sonata 2014 got the same issue of funny Rpms when idling and I understood that idle has three important parts to check/clean which are: Engine Air filter and mass air flow sensor (MAF), throttle body and IAC (idle air control) sometimes the PCV valve also increase the RPMs when it's clogged.
The choice of music made me relaxed and happy while doing this :)
Thanks for watching!
Great video! My Hyundai dealer did this when they cleaned out the GDI system on my '13 Sonata . As retired tech they were gracious enough to allow me to observe the procedure so I could do it myself next time. I was worried about messing up the calibration of the throttle body, but you put that fear to rest. Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
I can't say enough for this SIMPLE PROCEDURE!!! I have a 2010 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4L and this FIXED rough idling and the sensing mechanism "searching" for the right air-to-fuel ratio!!! The Technical Service Bulletin I found pertaining to the procedure I followed is: TSB "10-FL-009 2.0L AND 2.4L THETA ENGINE ETC THROTTLE BODY CLEANING". Gas mileage range registered by computer for a full tank prior to this procedure was about 230 miles. Mileage range registered by the computer after this procedure was around 317-320 after a fill-up!!! AS A NOTE!!!, in the TSB it was stated at the conclusion of the cleaning process:
"Without starting the engine turn the ignition key ON for at least 10 seconds and then
OFF for at least 10 seconds. This procedure allows the ECM to automatically learn
the throttle valve position.
Throttle Position Learning Enable Conditions that must exist for learning to take
place:
• Battery > 10V,
• Engine coolant temperature >5.3C (41.5F)"
---
Hopefully this info helps more people!!!
Awesome! Thank you for watching!
Thanks, will try that too.
That help me. Thank you for sharing!
ADDING TO @FooKingsOC These are the TORQUE SPECS for the Throttle Body Housing, 2011 and later models 87 to 104 in-lbs 10 to 11.5 NM
I opened by hand the butterfly plate and I was scared. Everything end up right. Thanks for the video and the music calmed my nerves. :)
Thanks for watching!
I just did this to my tired old 09 Sonata. Symptoms were a rough running, stalling engine and a check engine light. I forget the code #, but it tripped from the MAP sensor. My only deviation from the video instructions: I could not get the wires disconnected so I left them connected and gently turned over the throttle air bore for cleaning. It was awkward but I was able to do the cleaning without breaking any wires. I also disconnected the negative cable on my battery before I began disassembly.
Thanks to this great video, I'm back to a smooth running engine. Hope this is helpful to someone.
Is there a chance of washing out the lubrication around the throttle valve pivot (bearing, bushing)? How is the pivot relubricated?
My Hyundai accent 2007 looses power and starts running rough when I exelorate my guages start jumping around and my check engine light comes on but the ECU won't store the code I can't find anything online in regards to this issue
whats the ecu relearn procedure for this hyundai ?
Hey ,, thanks for the instruction ur video is so helpful , but i need Help cuz after what i did as the video the idle never stay the same i didnt know that it may need software calibration ,, its middle east edition 2012
Please feed me back
learn about this video. can you please show me the throttle position sensor located in hyundai santa fe 2010 2.4 4 cylinder engine? or make a video of it. thanks appreciate it.
I have a 2006 CM Hyundai Sante Fe 2.7 litre V6 manual transmission. The engine speed takes a long time to return to idle, when driving changing gears is especially bad having to be gentle as not to get driveline lash. What might it be do you have any thoughts? Thanks for your time.
Hello where is the heater control valve on the 2014 Hyundai Sonata?
7/7/17_Neighbor drove home and car jerking, acting strange. Checked battery and was ok but later we thought was the chain. I used my Ancel AD310 OBD2 I just received yesterday. Told us it was this throttle actuator. We thought it was a computer board. Thanks for your video I learned something new about cars !
Thank you for watching!
@2CarPros, just an observation, your technician did not disconnected to coolant hoses from the body. i believe, it will be easier to clean if they have been disconnected, then you will have easy access to the throttle housing. Thanks.
Not really easier if you have to do extra work now is it? This man did it just fine
same process for a 2015 sonata eco 1.6 turbo?
Im guessing you do it like this still in the hood so as to not disconnect the coolant lines? I've got a hyundai elantra that's alot like this and am kind of glad to come across a config that's similar, since another video said I had to flush the coolant first. My only question here now is if it's safe to move the plate by hand since I know that's bad on some cars :P
is it the same for 2011 kia optima?
What are all the tools I need to do this
If only the rubber hoses that connect to the air intake actually come apart. Mine are hard as a rock and completely stuck even with quality extended needle nose pliers cannot remove. Is there any product to spray to soften the rubber?
Awesome information & tutorial 👏 👌 👍🏿 😀
Thanks for watching Enrique!
Hey bud I liked the ratchet you were using what is it
Nice work!
Thank you for watching!
@@2carpros sir my sonata 2012 is high rpm can u give me a little idea
thank you
You are welcome! Thank you for watching!
Can you tell me what the music is called? Where i can find it?
I had hesitation on acceleration and deceleration issues on my 2016 Sonata. Dealer tech said that VCMA needed replacement and work done on the intake. Is this the same thing? Also, will they need to update ECM after this service?
Yes and I would try this fix first before replacing anything since this is free. And no you don't need to do anything to the ECM. Thanks for watching!
Is there aneed to clean MAP sensor next to the throttle body?
Cause I still have power loss below 5000 rpm after cleaning the throttle
By the way mine 2.4 mpi engine
I have power loss from idle to 3000 rpm, pass that, it takes off. I have not cleaned the TB yet but I wonder the same thing you are on the MAP sensor.
So there are no coolant hoses attached? I have a 2013 Elantra and it has coolant hoses connected to it, so in that case do I need to drain the coolant before taking out the the throttle body? If I don't drain coolant what could happen? Thank you
So that is a coolant pass through that heats up the throttle housing to make the air hotter so it combusts easier. If you take those hoses off it will leak coolant. Probably not a ton just make sure the system isn't under pressure when you do it. Thank you for watching!
Theta II engine I presume?
Is there a calibration/relearn/ programming that needs to be done after the throttle body is reinstalled? If so, how do you do it?
Nope. Thanks for watching!
I have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata limited 2.4 i need to change the throttle body in is there a relearn or reprogram when I replace the throttle body that needs to be done?
No
Ty!!
Hi, n thanks for the video!!! Two questions!...Do we need to disconnect the battery, and what is the torque setting for tightening up the throttle bolts?! Don, TX
No not really and I can't find the factory spec for the torque. Just tight in a cross pattern. Thank you for watching!
2011 and later models 87 to 104 in-lbs 10 to 11.5 NM
Good video and very helpful
Dealer one time changed me at 187$ only for this job being done by them
Why did they service this on your car
Ya, that’s not a normal service that they do to cars lol
I have two Hyundai autos (2015 Elantra and 2014 Sonata) that they have reecommended throttle body cleanings. @@infantrycountry4593
Would this cause a oil light to flicker on n off when given gas light pops off or while driving it happens only at idle..?
Hi, I've changed 2 of these. Oil light never turned on like you mentioned. Seems to he an oil pressure sensor causing the issue. Bad throttle you'll notice bad idle.
Hello,
If I clean the throttle on my Sonata 2011, after that do I need some calibration with software or I start the engine and everythink will be normal???
Sorry for my English!
It will re-calibrate on it's own. No re programing required. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video! Great step by step. I always struggle with dang electrical connectors as it seems they're always different in EVERY car at EVERY connection! I typically end up breaking some dumb snap retainer piece of plastic half the time. Love the University of RUclips!
Thanks for watching!
@@2carpros @2CarPros I have a 2009 Hyundai sonata 2.4 cylinder and I replaced the alternator. Fairly easy job. But after I replaced it I started the car up and went for a ride. Everything seemed fine until I came to a stop sign and as soon as I pressed on the brake the car stalled. Not only does it do that but when the engine is cold the idle looks good but as soon as it warms up the idle drops down to a low 400 to 500 rpm and if I rev it up it will stall when idle comes back down. I had none of these problems before replacing the alternator. I did not touch any vacume lines while replacing the alternator. I'm totally baffled. Before I start replacing things I figured I would try and get some help first. Also I get no codes.
I have 2012 Kia Optima hybrid p2110 and p0605 should I do this cleaning? Would it fix the problem ? Or there be other stuff related to those codes ?
Yeah I would definitely give it a try since its basically free. Clean it up all nice and new then wipe the codes and see if they come back.
Dont use carb cleaner on the plastic intake manifold. Melty it will be
How to relearn after cleaning
Was there a need to replace Gasket for Throttle Body? If so, which one would fit?
If it's in good shape I'd just re use it. But replacing it would be fairly cheap and you can find them at rockauto.com Thanks for watching!
I have a 2000 GLS 2.5 v6 that’s at 3000rpms at 80mph and I feel like that’s not right any suggestions?
I would definitely start with a throttle body service as it's free. Thanks for watching!
Are there torque specs for the throttle housing bolts?
2011 and later models 87 to 104 in-lbs 10 to 11.5 NM, Sorry I'm a year late here lol. But just in case someone else needs it.
Great video. What type (brand & name) of Ratchet Wrench do you use?
Hey thanks! I use a Snap On FLF80A Thanks for watching!
Not a great ratchet for $400 imo. Watch project farms latest video on cordless/electric ratchets, you’ll be surprised which three come out on top.
I do have a question: I have seen people from other car shops stating you cannot touch the insides of the throttle or the calibration setting will be gone. If you happen to touch the inside of it ( like you did on the video) you will need to get the acceleration of your car manually calibrated (probably by the car manufacturer's local retailer or a specialized service car shop). So the question here is did you have to work the calibration out once you finished doing this procedure you explained? I have a Kia sportage 2015 and I'm looking to fully understand the right way to get his done before taking it to the car shop (I'm still not sure I can do this myself even when I previously serviced other old cars I had in the past) Thanks!!!
There was no calibration needed the car started back up. The computer in the car auto calibrates. Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the quick response. So, as long as the ignition is off you can feel free to take the throttle body out, fully clean it out and the put it back in place?
Yep I have never had an issue. Thank you for watching!
I just cleaned the throttle body on my 2011 Hyundai Sonata and there was no problem after starting the car and driving it around.
These guys are wrong you going to have to do a throttle relearn if u open the butterfly plate so if u do before starting discount the battery hold the brake down for 5min and leave battery disconnected for minimum of 2hrs
Do I have to remove the map sensor to spray valve cleaner in through the throttle body?
Not sure if you have to but I normally do when I clean them. Better safe than sorry I guess you could say.
2 Years late here, But I have a video on the MAP Sensor, and I would say anyone trying to do the Cleaner through the Air Intake should remove the MAP sensor. Or be prepared to clean it after you spray in for instance SEAFOAM.
Do we need to reprogram anything?
Nope. Thanks for watching!
What are the symptoms of a dirty throttle actuator ?
Unstable idle, poss set of Map sensor code
I have a 2007 hyundai sonata. It literally accelerates as soon as i put it in gear, weather it is reverse or drive. Already replaced the throttle body but didnt help. Any ideas?
I have similar problem on my Hyundai i20 after throttle body cleaning, idle rpm has been increased and pick up speed of the car has been increased. I have no idea.
BHARATH V R cleaning the buterfly/s on ur throttle body can cause a lot of issues if ur not careful. If u over clean it u run the risk of removing the sealant between the butterfly and the housing of the throttle body wich in turn creates a vacuum leak wich will cause the car to idle higher due to the ecu ( engine computer ) compensating for the extra air entering the engine. With the butterfly in the closed position u shouldn’t be able to see any light passing through it If you hold it towards the sun or a bright light. When ur car is idleing and ur foot is not on the pedal air enters the engine through what’s called and iac valve ( air idle control valve )
Louis: TPS sensor ( throttle position sensor ) usually located under ur pedal or at the throttle body itself. Easy to change and inexpensive, however I’m not sure whether u would need to calibrate the sensor once fitted so the sensor knows what is 100% open throttle and 0% closed throttle
Would this work for 2015?
Sorry they patched it with an update 😞😞
Where's the MAF and how can I find it in these models?
The Sonata Doesn't have a MAF it has a MAP I have a video on my channel if you need assistance.
be careful not to damage. this is electric throttle so parts inside it can break if clean it harshly
By "replace," you actually mean just place back in. Correct? Not new parts.
Correct
What was the symptom?
Mine has been idling like garbage for a while! Just cleaned this out. Replaced my MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor as well, as it was throwing a code, and since everything was out of the way. I also disconnected and cleaned out the gas lines too. Idles like a newborn baby again!
Can I do the same to my 2015 Santa Fe sport 2.4
Yes, thank you for watching!
My 2015 Santa fe sport shake at idle. If I clean the throttle body, will it solve the problem? Thank you for the video. It help a lot!
What size socket is used on the intake? As well, what size socket is used on the throttle body? Do you need to replace a gasket where the throttle body mates to the engine?
10 mm
10MM and these are the Torque Specs 2011 and later models 87 to 104 in-lbs 10 to 11.5 NM
i did the same service at my 2014 sonata but dtc p0106 came up MAP/BARO Pressure Circuit Out of Range
Did you plug your mass air flow sensor back in? Leaving that unplugged can cause this. Thanks for watching!
Next time you have to do a throttle relearn by disconnecting the battery hold the brake down for 5min and leave battery disconnected for a minimum of 2hrs
What solved it for you? I just did this today and got the same results. My plan is to check/clean electrical connector and pull map to clean and new air filter. But experience is GOLDEN... pls : )
BTW, throttle bodies need cleaning on many and by many I mean almost all vehicles.
I let the car sit unplugged from the battery for 3hrs
Also if it continues to come up just changed the map sensor
You can't clean the throttle body like that if it's the electronic type, you will mess up the calibration then you have to reprogram it as far as i know
No, the computer is pre-programmed to work with the throttle body clean. So when it gets dirty is the problem. When you clean it, it returns back to factory specification. Thank you for watching!
It has a spring return mechanism....with return sense.....if it can't return to zero caused by build-up from carbon and other varnish type compounds, It "hunts" for zero, which causes rough idling!!!
Warning , electric throttle body do not messing with the throttle body plate just clean it do not open it or you will mess it up , your throttle plate will be open up and will not close anymore and you will have high rpm when starting up your vehicle or it have to be replace .
So there's no gasket???
Nope. Thanks for watching!
Would this give me hesitation?
Yeah it can. Thanks for watching!
When is the time to clean throttle body?
Every time you change the spark plugs is a good idea or if you experiencing an idling problem. You'd be surprised how often it fixes that.
Tens of thousands of dollars on a new vehicle. And you still have to do this bullshit smh
HIGH-AND-DIE sonata! The music sounds like its from gran turismo almost, thumbs up from me!
I am certain it is the same public domain music they used. Thank you for watching.
@@2carpros hello, My mechanic has cleaned my car's Electronic throttle body, but after cleaning I have high idling. I did idle relearn procedure, it didnt help. Any help?
How much should a shop charge to do this?? Looks like $69.99 job.
70 isn't a terrible price. Thank you for watching!
I was recently charged 115.00, now that I saw this video, I can see I can do it myself.
You should disconect batarie first
Haider Ali
If you disconnect the electrical connector for the body then you're fine.
