How to Fix a Rough Idle by Cleaning the Throttle Body

  • If your car or truck is experiencing idle problems then this is one thing you could check for. Carbon buildup in the engine throttle Body can restrict air flow. This will cause the engine to stumble as the engine reduces speed. As the idle decreases the engine will be "choked" for air due to the carbon build up so the engine changes the mixture temporarily to make up for the restricted air, the idle raises back up then starts to let itself down to idle and the process repeats.

Our corolla was having a rough time during cold starts, almost stalling. Cleaned the throttle body and now it runs smooth, can't tell this car has almost 200k miles

Some vehicles may require an idle speed adjustment with a scan tool after doing this, so be careful. Also, you shouldn't spray it directly into the throttle. Use only a rag soaked in cleaner. Also, unplug the connector so there is no chance of the blade pinching your fingers on a drive by wire throttle.

    Incorrect way to do it

  • @rwallace1625

I like the 1A Auto videos but I disagree with this one. I always remove the throttle body to clean it and use a designated cleaner for throttle bodies, not carb cleaner. Some vehicle makes will require an idle relearn either by a scanner or another method. Failure to do this may result in a high idle until the ECM relearns the throttle body position but eventually the idle will even out on it's own.

using carb cleaner is a bad idea, you can damage sensors. carb cleaner is very very harsh stuff, especially on plastic and rubber.. even good quality throttle body cleaner has damaged sensors in the past for me.... trust me, ive been there. best thing is to use good quality throttle body cleaner and take out any sensors that it may come in contact with..

I used an entire can of cleaner on one throttle body. Can the runoff make its way to the pistons and go past the rings when started and then contaminate the oil?

+kvrmv oes Thanks for watching! You just want to avoid any from getting into the electronics as that could cause issues. Other than that you can use a lot if it without issue!

I have a 96 jeep cherokee with a revving problem. It doesn't happen while idling but while driving. The engine will start running ruff then rpm drops down until the engine almost dies then revs up to normal then down, up down, up. about every 2-3 seconds. After a couple minutes it will run normal. Would you consider this a symptom of a bad throttle position sensor? Can you suggest any other cause? Thank you.

Not sure if you still have this problem, but I also had a jeep with this same problem, and it got to the point that my vehicle would stall as a result because the carbon in the throttle body had created a vacuum. Get this taken care of if you haven't already, it's a relatively cheap job to have done if you can't do it yourself.
