    Finally! I worked on these like 8 months ago and I'm happy to see they're finally released and can talk about them. This is a great overview I can point to when people ask me what the differences are, great video. The 4-pin on the back can also be used to output CRSF or SBUS to a flight controller and still have the PWM outputs as well.

    • @Photonees
      @Photonees Год назад

      I'm not sure you are right, checked the website, not a single mention and no pins to solder on the PCB pictures that show front and back without the sticker. Was already wondering they are not usefull for quads.

    • @CapnBry
      @CapnBry Год назад +12

      @@Photonees You mean the CRSF output port? It definitely puts out the channel data out that port. Source: I wrote it. No soldering to the receiver necessary, just use the supplied cable and hook it to a flight controller like a regular receiver. The PWM outputs can be remapped to any input channel too so you can like do a pan/tilt camera setup and stull run the quad like normal.

      @@CapnBry interesting. But why is there no mention of it on the website? Wanted to DL the manual, but not available yet... So you mean the pins sticking out. The i onderstand I guess. I thought you meant extra "pins" to solder on on the receiver 😅

    • @RCVideoReviews
      @RCVideoReviews  Год назад +1

      Yes, you can output serial and PWM simultaneously on ELRS. I haven't done it on new RM stuff yet, but for PWM: Set Pin 2 to Serial, pick SBUS (3.3+) or CRSF, and PWM pins retain output. No configuration necessary for those.

    • @rjbishop12
      @rjbishop12 10 месяцев назад

      I tried changing the output pins in the ER8 and ER8GV, but they don't support setting their output pins to Serial. It appears you can only use the CRSF port for serial output (which is fine by me) @@RCVideoReviews

    Great video John, good to see these receivers are finally public! I think RM are on to a winner with the ER series. :) btw, the UART on the ER8G and ER8GV is on the side - at 9:59 it was right next to your thumb ;) It'll be interesting to see what happens with that in the future... The presentation and build quality of these look great... I like the attention to small detail like the rubber strain relief for the antenna on the ER6 and ER8.

    • @RCVideoReviews
      @RCVideoReviews  Год назад +7

      Ah, I see it. It's covered by heat shrink. So that has to be cut open. I think there will be a lot of people who appreciate having mainstream ELRS receivers: Cases, pins soldered on, strain relief antenna, 35v vbat, +6 pins. Definitely believe RM is on the right track and has fielded a winner with this lineup.
      I am nearly 100% ELRS on fixed wing.

    Please forgive a noob question, but if a quad requires four channels just for the sticks(?) does that mean a four channel receiver wouldn’t work if I also need a channel for arming, flight mode, beeper, flip after crash, etc?

    • @RCVideoReviews
      @RCVideoReviews  Год назад +2

      Usually quads are managed by Flight Controllers and almost universally need more than 4 channels, so we usually feed them via a serial protocol like CRSF or SBUS (mostly CRSF). Serial protocols can feed 16+ channels over one wire to the FC and the FC can then distribute commands over it's outputs as necessary.

Do the CRSF receivers also only get 4 proportional channels? Also, the UART port for the longer receivers is visible on one of the longer sides just under the shrink wrap.

    What range would you trust the ER4 to? I'm going to be using them in SBUS mode with A3S4's in my 750-1000mm racers. They are small so I won't be flying them at any great distances.🤪 Would you trust them in larger planes as well? I'd like to use one in my Excalibur V2 warm liner since there's not a lot of space in the electronics bay.

      I have a bunch of the Matek/HM RX's, you also have to solder all of those and one little mistake (which people have admitted to making in the comments on retail sites) and your $14.99 is wasted. Also, some of the older hobbyists don't have the same eyes/hands younger hobbyists have, so solutions that come ready to go out of the box are a value add for them.

      Radiomaster produces the hardware. The ELRS team produces the software. SBUS is available in 3.3.0-RC-1. As of the release of these receivers, 3.3.0-RC-1 wasn't available. So they will support SBUS if you upgrade the firmware. Keep in mind as of today, 3.3 is in Release Candidate stage. It should be final soon.

    Please pass this on to Radiomaster,
    They're too expensive. The 8ch receivers are 34.99, vario version is $40. I can make my own 10 or 16ch pwm with vbat (and possibly even current) sense from HM or Matek elrs receivers for around $20-25. If these 8ch receivers (at least the one without vario) were priced a little more competitively at around $20-25, I'd be likely to buy some. At this price I will not buy any, I doubt a lot of others will either. Any receiver over $30 is just too expensive. That is why I stopped buying and using FrSky 8ch sbus receivers. At first when they came out, they were in the mid $20 price range, but slowly they snuck up the price, and I stopped buying them. So please let Radiomaster know they priced these out of reach. I like their products, but the whole point was that everything they make is open-source and I bought their products because they were inexpensive and fairly priced in the past. These are not priced fairly, in my opinion, and are not competitive.

      I've asked for integrated gyros too. I've been flying with vbat for some time with every kind of plane. As long as your batteries are healthy--no big discrepancies in cell to cell IR, overvall vbat is quite effective and accurate. Cell voltage is nice, but vbat is effective in a practical sense. I literally have it on almost everything I own--including 85" Extreme Flight 3D planes and my 90mm F-22 Ultra. The planes that don't have it yet will be getting it.

    The built in VBAT Telemetry kinda piqued my interest over CrossFire which I'm currently using, and which doesn't have that functionality by itself ( I'm using various Matek Adapter Boards for that ).
    *_BUT_* that CH5 Arming situation could require some explanation... I only drive RC Tanks ( ruclips.net/video/l3_RcOU3zo0/видео.html / ruclips.net/video/VNP6Dstz6wc/видео.html ) three of which require at least eight Channels to operate to access all functions with two of them requiring PWM Outputs - So all eight PWM Connectors. Now... As you may guess Arming isn't exactly a thing for RC Tanks ( at least I'm not aware of it being a thing for models of the size I'm frequenting ) so having it block even just one of the eight required PWM Pins is kinda an instant NoGo for me which brings me to the question if Arming can be mapped to a Non existing/physical "virtual" ninth Pin thus freeing up all eight PWM Connections?

      Not only that, I've been watching ELRS telemetry very closely for a few weeks, and the RF link latches on like a pit bull with lock jaw. Even single antenna designs produce ridiculously good RF outcomes. I'm talking RQLY at 333hz of 95%+ and 25mw of dynamic power.
      Let that sink in and you should be saying, "Holy s$!T!" That means 316 understood packets *per second* at a measly 25mw of transmit power with headroom to 1000mw. It's just insane.
