    I remember the dinky eagle coming out when I was 7 years old, there was a craze for them in my school ! The funny thing is everyone complained about the green colour being unrealistic & jealous of the kid with the white freighter, I think dinky definitely got it wrong about kids & the colour! Lol

    I have the Eagle Transporter Green with chrome and yellow thrusters. I receive it as a gift in 1976 and I still have it very well preserved, almost intact. It has been 46 years! Damm I am getting old 😅

    My Mum bought me the blue freighter in 1978 and I'm very happy to say I still have it. It's in very good condition, still has it's magnet that works, the only thing missing is two of the four radioactive container barrels that have gone missing but not bad for a toy I've owned for 43 years. It is one of my most precious possessions as I desperately wanted it but we didn't have much money at the time and Mum scraped together the money to buy it for me. Now it has pride of place in my home in it's own protective case. 😊

  • @petetube99
    @petetube99 5 лет назад +11

    I vaguely recall the yellow barrels with the radioactive symbols caused a minor panic when someone found them on their lawn and informed the authorities who then sent bomb disposal to the address. It was during the cold war after all. I think it was on John Craven's Newsround circa 1979.

    Space Eagle is one of my favorite sci-fi ship designs. (I think it kinda inspired the look of the Tantive IV....Princess Leia's ship in Star Wars, and various Corellian Corvettes seen through the movie and animated series.)
    I love the near-future look of the Eagle. It looks like something NASA or another current day space program could have designed. The look of Space: 1999 was clearly influenced by Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey film....especially Moonbase Alpha when you look at the moonbase in 2001: ASO.
    Thanks for the video, Toy Polloi. :)

    • @DavidShepheard
      @DavidShepheard 4 года назад +2

      It's the other way around actually.
      The original model of the Millenium Falcon was made and then George Lucus saw the Eagle from Space 1999 and was worried people would think the Eagle design was ripped off by him, so he got the people who made the model to change it a bit an reused it as Princess Leia's Tantive IV.

    I got the green transporter eagle for Christmas in what my memory insists was 1978. But it had the yellow thrusters and chrome rocket bells. I painted all the green and yellow fixtures with whiteout as well as the red engine tanks and doors,which open to reveal the still red interior steps. I left the red windows alone. For all that it still holds up nicely, sitting proudly on my desk. Great video!

    Awesome vid. I have three of these to restore. One is mine from when I was a youngster. I have talked about this one with a guy who said he worked for Dinky as a sales rep. It is unusual in it being an all white transporter. (I didn't entertain the idea of a green one at all, they just didn't look right) he said they released very few all white ones but they didn't prove popular for some reason. I don't know where Mum got mine from but it was probably a supermarket called Grandways in Leeds where I grew up. As I said I still have this one. It lost it's rocket pack over the years but I bought a replacement from acme3000 on ebay and this will be the last one I restore. The other two are green ones which I will repaint white (yep, me bad) and look out for transport or freighter pods for them. Off to look at your other vids. Will subscibe too.

    I had 6 of these and recently sold 4 on eBay - what an idiot.
    I still have a nice green one with red thrusters and a blue and red transporter with the magnet. The stickers on the nuclear waste containers were removed and are, I thought, quite rare after a John Craven's Newsround report of a woman finding one in her back garden and calling the bomb squad.
    I wish I kept the other 4 and did a show correct version but I would have done it matt white and with white engines with the chrome cones. Nice restoration besides that.
    Re-watching Space:1999 at the moment on the horror channel. Some pretty poor story lines but great acting, especially Landau. The forced introduction of loads of Italian actors brought the level of acting down though. So many of our household named big stars were in it. A great looking show that would still look futuristic if released now. The expensive designer furniture would be worth a bomb today.

    I really don't understand the urge to have made them in colors. I wish there was some scientific way to determine how they would have fared in sales if looking more authentic to the show color-wise. I know they're first and foremost toys, but I really think kids (particularly nerdy kids) have always leaned towards screen-authenticity more than the sometimes over-thinking toy companies would believe. I was far more preoccupied with it than the average kid, probably, even borderline manic, but I know I'm at least not alone.

      Yeah mine did they were plastic rivets with one posi screw in the centre of the rocket fuselage frame.
      Other common faults those flimsy plastic feet on the module would snap off and the jet boosters on the the four individual leg arms also the girder work has plastic slotted teeth to grip to each side of the die cast frame which could also snap off.

    It always irritated me, as a child, when a company wouldn't make the toy the same as the eagle on the show. I had the big plastic toy with the stupid black door on the top of the command module. Black? Really? I painted mine white. Also didn't care for the red tanks on the model by the main engines. Make it like the one on the show. That's what we want!!

    so which company made the Eagle spaceship that had sound and lasers? I had one in my possession as a child and would like to know who made that one and what it was called.
