A GREAT vanilla+ mod for portraits is the seasonal outfits mod. Doesn't at all change their faces or personalities, but gives them outfits that vary between seasons (hats and scarves in the snow, for some) and whether or not they're indoors (don't need that cap inside). Changes their sprites too but it's very in character, practically ought to be in vanilla.
It's a good, chill game as long as the gameplay interests you. There's a lot to it. But it's amazing that it was made by basically one man (at least in it's original incarnation)
I definitely recommend playing it for yourself if you think you might like it. There is plenty to do and different ways to play it-and loads of achievements and ways to keep pushing yourself if you choose to. Worth every penny.
One of these days I'll play this game long enough to get past year 3 and get into late game content. I just restart every time, put in 60 hours, do it again a few years later.
