4:35 I definitely think part of the bit is playing on how caucasian teachers often struggle to pronounce the names of African-American students. I taught in areas that are entirely people of color, and I made an extreme effort because I didn't want to disrespect anyone, but it was a challenge for me to learn the pronunciation of everyone's name.

@@thorkagemob1297 Actually, he pronounced it "Inner-City-Correct", if you will, in that he pronounced it [I'll try not to butcher the transliteration, here; but here goes] "Tim-OH-theey", and Peele's character replied accordingly with "Pree-ZENT."
So, according to Mr. Garvey, both words apparently were pronounced correctly, according to how both given names and - indeed - some words are reputed to be pronounced in the main stereotypically within, uh, within... uh... the... uh... the Inner City.

I don't know about all schools in America, but in the schools that i went to,teachers usually dress in a way that can be described as "business casual" on most days, but on Fridays, they often wear T-shirts of the school they're working for with a pair of jeans. Fridays are "school spirit" days.

I teach at a public high school in San Francisco, and my usual dress is a shirt and tie, but the sleeves are rolled up and it's paired with jeans and boots. Here's my take on this skit: it's actually a pretty specific parody of a certain type of movie, where a teacher goes to a school in an impoverished area (as Mr. Garvey puts it, the inner city) and whips a primarily black class into shape. Think Dangerous Minds or Lean On Me. So Mr Garvey is basically a character from one of those movies coming to a more affluent (and white) school. This explains the way he dresses and his vocabulary ("Insubordinate, and churlish"), meant to show he's educated, respectable and straightlaced (and conservative), to contrast him with the "hood" kids he's teaching.
I'm a white European though so I could be talking complete nonsense, but that's the vibe I'm getting.

    Kabir:
The strange names you mentioned are African-American/Black names. I know someone who used to be a teacher and one of her students was an African-American girl with the name Shithéad (pronounced She tade) Yes, the name is spelled Shithead with an accent mark over the letter E. Normally, accent marks are not used in America, so her license would indeed say SHITHEAD SMITH or whatever surname she had.
It is also common to see many foreign names in the US due to the large foreign population studying here. Do you have any problems with the pronunciation of Kabir? My Mexican friend whose mother is British had problems in England because of surname. His last name is Muñoz. No one could pronounce the name correctly. The correct pronunciation in MOON YOS. The letter ñ is pronounced like the first N in onion. He got so tired of the bad pronunciation of his surname that he began to use his mother´s surname instead. Her surname is Johnson.

First to Kabir. The fact that you were a teacher and relating so much to the skit made it even more enjoyable. Both my wife and daughter were teachers.
To Esusamex (and Kabir, of course). I live in the very white (read, Caucasian Republican/MAGA) state of South Dakota, although we are getting more and more people from other counties moving here. I worked (now retired) 18 years at a local pork production plant where we had people from over 50 countries working. Most of the non-Americans in the department I worked in with were from the Eastern European (Bosnia, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, etc), Central mid-Africa (Ethiopia, South Sudan) and a few from China, Laos, Nepal, etc. I came across many interesting names to say the least. One name that stuck to me in particular was a fella from South Sudan named Albino. The name is pronounce Al-bee-no, not Al-bye-no. For those that don't know, people from South Sudan are on the opposite side of the scale of an albino. I'd tease him about once in a while and he'd tease me by offering 20 cattle to marry my daughter. 😁 On a side note, he introduced me to Manute Bol of NBA fame which was pretty cool
Anyway, I wanted to say that I'm going to remember Shithéad and the proper way to pronounce it, just in case I ever meet one. On another note, my older sister married an Muñoz.

The actual reason for him pronouncing the names wrong was to play on the fact that in schools in america, teachers often mispronounce African Americans students names and just names of any person of color in general. A lot of the time they don’t even bother to try to say their name correctly and immediately ask if there’s a nickname they can call them. It’s a mild form of racism so he was trying to show if it was the opposite way towards traditionally Caucasian names. Highlighting the ridiculousness of not respecting someone’s name.

I think I came back one week after was it racing or being sick and we had a substitute teacher who could not find the actual subjects we were supposed to do
And this was the last substitute teacher I had when I was in school I think it was in 12th grade what teacher came back she was upset with us but I was like I wasn't here when you made the plans for the for this teacher but okay you can be mad at me if you want but she the normal teacher had buried the actual substitute teachers agenda below a bunch of other stuff on her desk so no one could actually find it
So the whole class basically got a day off even though the class actually like this substitute teacher
Because she was like a constant
Till we ended up getting to go to the gym messing around the computers it was kind of fun day it was a relaxing day for me cuz I had no clue what was even going on

  • @annp9704

This is flipping the roles. Normally it's a white teacher mispronouncing the names of Black (and honestly student with names that don't have an English origin.). The teacher then would get angry about the name not pronounced as they expected or just ignoring the student's feedback of the pronunciation. It's kind of like showing, "See how rude and dumb you look." by switching the roles. But it's done in a super funny way that I think is helpful to people who my not understand how rude they are otherwise.
