- Waterproof exterior walls with liquid rubber and footer tile, The sump pump collects the water and sends it out to the street.
This home is in Tampa FL. Water was trapped under the slab. Hardwood buckled and moisture puched up through the floor.
Digging down to the footer we found huge roots entering the foundation, Water table had risen and came through the foundation wall.
The Solution .. Dig out the footer, Clean the wall and remove the root system, Seal the wall with liquid rubber, add footer tile and sump basins and pumps to sent the water out to the street.

The timing was perfect when I stumbled upon your video. I purchased a house constructed in 1960 with crawl space foundations last year. I embarked on a project to pour a 4-inch concrete sidewalk, 6 feet in width, atop a 4-inch base layer of gravel around the house in the backyard to safeguard the foundation. After watching your video, I'm thrilled to have learned about this rubber coating, which will serve as an additional layer of protection. Thank you.
These gotta be the best water "diy" problem solver vids on RUclips. Thanks for all the effort and advice, Chuck.
You will have helped build a house on the opposite side of the world!
Greetings from the south west of Australia!
Thanks again...
Great video. I moved to a flood area and yours was the first video I found when I started when I started researching waterproofing and managing ground water. Your videos and hard work are much appreciated.
Thanks Chuck! You're the best. Have learned a ton from your videos.
Chuck You saved me $1000's of dollars! I had no Idea what I was doing but through the help of your videos I was able complete my project! I had a huge water problem during the heavy rains here in Oahu (even after downspouts were installed) Your videos and positive attitude really gave me the courage to do it myself. THANK YOU
Phillip Rush in 2019 how much do u think a project like this cost???
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. It is hard to find such solid, comprehensive advise. I'm in the Triangle area of NC and you have helped up my drainage game.
Dude, thanks so much for making this video. I live in a part of Japan, which is on the same latitude as Florida and has similar weather. I built a portion of my house with a sub basement, but it was built poorly built and now I have to DIY this exact project. This video is saving my American ass out here.
Love your patient and detailed presentation Chuck. Extremely helpful for the do-it-your-self-er
I watched the whole thing. While your job didn't work in my particular application, I learned a lot about what I'm dealing with, and will be using some of your techniques to solve my problems. Thank you sir!
You are such a great guy!! Thank you for your help. I’m all the up in Michigan in a new home during a ice and rain storm, trying to understand why my basement is taking in water. This explains a lot.
Excellent video! Wow! Thank you for this public service! Very educational!
I am learning a lot. Thank you. My wet basement issue is about to come to an end. Finally.
Ever think about using a pressure washer on the footer when you wash it off. It might help you clean the small roots away easier. Awesome video thanks!
Love your channel. I hope more people subscribe and reward you for your efforts. everything you showed makes sense.
Thank you i learn a lot from your show i live in Colorado and as you say if you think you can do something you can.and i can
Always informative and detailed. Love these videos. I wish you would show the finished product, pics of the property with everything back to normal.
I have tons of pics I've been doing this for 21 years
@@mikeswallows5743 I have a few questions that I would like your input. Do you have an email?
Great video! Really appreciate your work. Lots of knowledge shared in this video.
It’s crazy builders don’t dig trenches and protect the foundation before starting Building !
Totally agree. This is something that makes no sense to me other than trying to save a few dollars
Cut cost for the house and pump the price up.
this one is way more professional than the other videos.
Foundation wrap on the wall is also a good idea after waterproofing.
Thank you Chuck
Looks easy and shallow , up north your footing would be ad least four feet below ground , lot bigger job.
Thank you so much for naming the parts and hardware yaw use
The tile should always be lower than the top of the footing Never on top.
Great video !!! Thanks. Is Tar good in place of rubber seal ? especially in hot countries
I sure am glad I bought a trencher that cuts an 8 inch trench. That should work for one of these drains.
Stupid question because i live in oklahoma but why is the footer below ground level?
Here our footer are usually ground level unless people bring in dirt and landscaping. I ask because your putting the tile on top of the footer. I dig along side the footer then lay my tile.
You should use hydrolic grout and create a cant strip to push the water to the exterior edge of the footing. then waterproof.
Chuck you are awesome. These videos are great
Hi Chuck,
Everyday is a learning day! - never thought it would be fun too.
Your YT's are great, approach & explanations most helpful - thanks

EXCELLENT VIDEO! I live in Melbourne Fl (east coast) and have rain water coming in my workshop. This video helped me a lot. IN this video, you show the french drain with pipe, fabric, and gravel. Have you ever seen or used EZ Drain? It's Prefabricated French Drain with Pipe
that you can get at most big box stores or direct. Light weight, fast, and rather inexpensive.
Does Blackjack cause spalling on bricks that are holding moisture the way painting them does? I've seen some major issues with painted chimneys and I'm wondering about this before I seal my brick foundation. I don't want to make the problem worse.
realy a master job,,,,I did learn some,,,,,,many thanks for sharing
what a help this was! wish you guys were in my city
I'm in md accurate builders of the Chesapeake what state are u in
Mike Swallows In Ohio . Too far unfortunately.
Awesome job, I need you guys here to help my problems....I don't trust any around here where I live. Very shady jobs...I want it do t right!!
Would cleaning the foundation with an acid help the rubber coating last longer
Great stuff. Very helpful keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thx Chuck . Your tutorials are very helpful.
Wow this is the best video yet. I do have a similar problem out here in California. My garage is 2 feet lower then my neighbors dirt and the rain flooded garage floor. Everything like this story. I am clear with the steps leading to the Gravel and perforated pipe. The video did not show that installation on top of the footing is was already laid down. I would like to get some details on process in the reply would be fine? Also, would like your advice on drainage? I don't plan on needing a sump pump cause my grade is 2 feet below my neighbors I would place the liquid rubber, one gutter, a down drain, the gravel and perforated pipe on his side and then drill a hole in the dividing wall to let water drain to the street down my driveway cause I have slop or you can give me your suggestion? Also when I add this gutter and drain should I run it into the gravel perforated pipe or just in to the soil? Please give me your suggestions? :-)

Thanks Chuck for sharing great video
Hello sir how much do you think it will cost something like this like cost by foot?
Great vid! Thanks for all the helpful info.
Great video indeed !!!!
Thanks Chuck very helpful .
Great video and work on the property.
Looking for some help! I have a Rancher with a walkout basement front door and steps Center of house to the left of steps in basement leaks. My downspouts are running into my backyard causing a river and puddles. I recently built a shed in the back of my yard. Want to keep all the extra water away without flooding neighbors yard down hill from me. My question is can I create a sub pump out back bottom of hill and send up hill out to street with sub pump for basement? I was going to put drains in corrugated pipe around the shed and send it behind but I don't want to play all the water from the house in my neighbor's yard they did just pay for irrigation closest drain is out front of their house in the gutter. If I pump it out to the street it runs downhill in the gutter to their drain about a football field or so of traveling
Nice work. Thanks for sharing.
hey use a high pressure gurney to clean the footer
Supper informative video, deff a thumbs up
What brand of liquid rubber is recommended? Can "flex seal" be used? My Dad's old house - built in 1947, in California, has issue with water seepage on one wall in garage.
So Chuck, or whoever wants to answer this- you put the perf pipe down. How does that prevent water from gaining access by seepage even further beneath the pipe? Ie, it keeps fanning out under the structure below where your pipe is resting?
How far did you dig for that particular house?
Nice video. You keep working further and further south. Soon you'll be in Cuba.
Just had water come through my foundation inside my living room after Irma. How much a project like this one tipically cost if I were to hire someone? Do you know if insurance will cover fixing and sealing the foundation?
Great job!

Blackjack rubber coat 57. Noted
Why do you not use the geo fabric on some of your other jobs, but you do use it here?
What do you do to ensure future tree roots don’t break the rubber seal?
Thanks for sharing
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that liquid rubber doesn't last as long as concrete. At least that's what I was told by a contractor. I'm getting ready to patch and seal my foundation, but was going to do it with concrete. Is the liquid rubber really necessary?
Iam doing a French system along the side of my detached garage. I live I'm the city and my parents live in garage so water is been getting in there. I was gonna have the corrugated pipe run all the way to street from garage for water to exit but garage kinnda far from where garage is. So my question is if I use one of those emmiter pop up elbows somewhere down the pipe for water to exit, will I need to slope the corrugated pipe down to emmiter elbow so water can escape there if pipe gets filled up with water or emmiter pop up will work regardless of pipe slope?
Hi Chuck! Thank you for sharing this video - really enjoyed watching it. Do you know if Black Jack Aqua-Tite is a good product to use for a brand new foundation wall waterproofing? It seems to be the only Black Jack product available in Canada foundation waterproofing sealant. Thank you.
How do you waterproof foundation of a center unit townhome, when there is nowhere for the water to go?
How do you decide whether you need French or trench drain
Hi Apple Drains, Would there be any benefit to use pressure washer vs garden hose for washing off the walls?
there is no grade to the pipe!? what makes the water flow?
I used one of those attachments that you put on your drill (I know it's called something else but it looks like a drill) to mix thinset and grout and mixed my Black Jack up in just a few minutes. It's about 2' long, worked great. It was way too thick to stir by hand. I was happy I had that because I just don't think I could have gotten an acceptable mix by hand.
We are in the process of doing this job right now. Had to go almost 70 linear ft and the wall was buried 5'. Lots of fun...lol. My tar got rained on with an unexpected storm about 4 hours after second coat. I put it very thick on seam of footer and block. Any idea if this will be a big issue? I plan to let it dry back out completely and 3rd coat that footer area just to be safe.
I would've done a indoor perimeter drain with the sump pit outside
You are great
thank you for the video.
what's the name of the fabric you put around the tub?
Have you taken a vote on a lesser fisheye lens or standard no distortion? I’d prefer it
I'm honestly surprised more people haven't said something. Helpful video, great guy, but what's with the fisheye? (I just rhymed unintentionally, lol) That fisheye was hard to ignore.
nice video papa
Tell me when you come to Tampa again
What about winter ? Where is located this house?
Thank you very much for the sharing of knowledge and know how. Teaching others is a like bonus credits to good living. Detroit
Great vid but didn't you tell us on another vid to lay your pipe next to the footer instead of on top?
He said along side or on top in this video
Do you need a permit for this if I want to DIY?
how to you waterproof block and beam foundations? Great videos by the way
ames blue max, rub-r-wall, superpro work better than the lowes brand..dries faster too..
im surprised he didn't patch or angle the footer with some patch mix like a plug ..like..make it a downward triangle to get rid of that dimple formation.. then the water cant pool at the base..works better
Come to LA please
so did you have to wait for the foundation to dry first before the rubber
Yes bituthene is better then just the rubber of u can find it
What is the brand of the pump
SUPER
How much a job like that ?
how much this type of job will cost in 2021?
Are you able to paint over that rubberized coating?
Shouldn’t have to it should be below grade level just a couple inches
have you got a membrane under the concrete floor ?
On the inside you use a waffle board to keep from pinching the floor to the wall when you pour crete
Thought you always put the pipe under the footer?
Below the top of the fitter not below u can cause the ground to erosion and the week in the strength of the wall
How about straight down from the top of the footer next to it but not under it?
NICE 4:59 minutes.
Where do you (do I) find regulations for pumping excess water into the storm runoff (street)? I have already found that pumping untreated (crawlspace) water into my sewage line is illegal. ALSO - Is "Everbilt" as good a pump as Zoeller? Thank you for posting these excellent videos. (p.s. sometimes it is hard to hear your audio)
Don't understand, the water run-off should be going into a storm drain which then goes back into the bay. It's illegal to put storm water run-off into the sewer system in our state as well, but your run-off should be going into the street.
Chuck...I am so grateful I found your channel. I live in Lincolnwood Illinois bordering Chicago and it has been raining pretty good today and the last few days. I have a basement and the water is coming up through the basement floor. I believe it is caused by hydrostatic pressure from water going underneath the concrete floor. My foundation wall is 4ft high. Would you recommend that I dig along the foundation 4ft or can I go about 2ft and install the French drain? Anyway, thanks again and love your work ethic and explanation.
I tried 2ft..doesnt work.. back again this yr to do it "right" down to the footer.. if I have room i'm gonna load the area with tile and gravel..not use just one..sick of water..
Hey chuck nice video have you ever had any issues with the liquid rubber #57 cause I was looking into use some to seal one side of my foundation but I see lots of negative reviews of that product what's your recommendation should I go head and use it or get some thing else thanks
Do I really need a sump pump? Couldn't I just put the pipe down grade?
yeah but its Florida, there is no grade
Put geo textile on the understurbed soil . drain tile on top of that then rock if you put rock under the tile water will set there and that's not good.
You do free estimates? I could use a few pointers
Yes contact me at 443 955 0601 I'm in md but I can walk u threw it
How much does a job like this cost?
50 a foot is close number plus extra like drains n pumps
has to be asked, are you using cpvc glue on pvc?
he said orange or red
Only on sump pump lines clear is stronger but both will work
The lense your using don't look good
where do you buy 6" pipe? home depot only sells 4"
Possibly ferguson's if not call around u can get pipe 8 n 12 inch
Yo
