I would not visit an Oregon Coast shipwreck because I am, what police refer to as a "sh*t magnet" (allow me to explain). I spent 5th grade in Los Angles. During that year, the city was hit by a 7.1 earthquake. During a visit to Yosemite park in 1997, a major earthquake hit. If I visited the Oregon coast, the Juan De Fuca plate would choose that moment to slip, causing a 9.1 quake with a subsequent tsunami. If I stay away, the people on the coast get to live another day.
@@The_Dudester oh my god 😂 my state is one of the number one states for small earthquakes so come on over! We are prepared 😂 I'm not in Oregon but I'm on the west coast 😂
Of course I don't live in the pacific northwest, but I've been around there alot for work, upto a couple years ago! I know very little about the Columbia bar, but I know it keeps the US coast guard very busy. There are alot of pleasure craft & small fishing vessels lost in that area as well. I would love to visit a shipwreck in the area, but I don't know if my breathing would allow me to? What shipwreck do you recommend, keeping in mind someone with permanent lung/respiratory problems? 😊 Got an idea for you, if you do the plane crash series? This isn't a plane crash exactly, but it is right in your backyard almost. The DB Cooper case still baffles law enforcement after more than 52 years!
Dropped the video I had on in the background as soon as the noti hit for this 🥳 video totally has me wanting to go try diving in Oregon for shipwrecks!
Thanks so much, friend! I am right there with you - being so close to Oregon myself and having family there makes that coast and those wrecks closer to my heart!
@@shipwrecksunday Totally get it 😁 I'm the same way with the Mississippi and STL. I could imagine seeing those wrecks in person in tandem with your family living close makes them that much more tragic and real. Shoutout for all you do to honor those lost 🫡
I really enjoyed this video; you covered the topic very well! I think it's so cool to be able to physically touch history. I didn't know about the wrecks near Nehalem and Florence -- I smell a road trip!
great video Elinor. I live in Dungeness and have visited many of the wrecks. also, the tally ho. Leo started the rebuild less than a mile from my house, before he moved it to port Townsend. I've also been cough in foul weather, when I was out fishing and crabbing. 😎💚💙👍👍🍺🍺🍻
The number of shipwrecks in the Great Lakes is commonly listed at approximately 6,000. The freighter Michipicoten was trying to be another one this month. But I absolutely love learning about other concentrations of shipwrecks. Keep it up!
It's a difficult number - in my research I found the estimation between 5,000 and 6,000, so it's hard to decipher! I do need to look into Michipicoten - I just want to make sure I have all the facts first. I never like making sensationalized videos at the time of disaster. Thank you so much for your support and watching this video!! I really appreciate you!
I don't know how the "Graveyard of the Pacific" is defined. It's an over used reference to different areas of the coastline labeled by different authors/historians. For instance, a point just north of Pt. Arguello known as Honda/Pt. Pedernales/Devil's Jaw is the resting place of ten shipwrecks within swimming distance of each other. It too has been called the "Graveyard of the Pacific." Any particular area of the American pacific coastline shouldn't be referred to as "the" but rather "a" graveyard of the pacific as there are several areas where a number of ships sank or stranded.
Quite frankly, should I ever visit W Coast USA, I`d rather see Tally Ho in Port Townsend, WA. Over 100yrs old, she has been restored/rebuilt in an (almost!) completed project lasting a `Rolling 2 Years`. If you are interested in Traditional Wooden Boat Construction, I can highly recommend `Sampson Boat Company` Videos on You Tube. Incidentaly, Tally Ho recently ran aground during Sea Trials, floating off, unharmed on a Rising Tide - almost qualifying as a Shipwreck? Big shout out to Leo his amazing Crew of helpers and the folks of Port T. I`m a Patreon of the project and hope to visit this wonderful Vessel when she eventually returns home to England. Well done Elinor for the extra Friday vids - Purrfect Supplementary Topics (saying `HI` to Peaches & Co!).
Good job E. Your mispronounced words are my favorite. Not gonna lie. It endears me to the channel. Strait of Juan De Fuca. You were close. I like that Friday segways Sunday. Looking forward to Sunday as you usually get the obscure details everyone ignores. Looking forward to the pictures as well.
Could you do a story on a "nearly shipwrecked" ship? I'd love to hear about the ferry Ocean City, which now sits derelict on the shore of Oro Bay, WA... it's visible in satelite photos.
I've been in the pacific northwest quite often for work, upto a couple years ago. I know full well what you mean about the weather in areas, due to the Juan De Fuca plate. That is especially prevalent up in north west of Washington, around Port Angeles. I've followed the Columbia River along the Oregon/Washington state line so many times, & the Columbia again around the Port of Kalama in southwest Washington. I don't know nearly as much as you do about the area, but I do know how dangerous it is around the Columbia Bar. It's no wonder it's the graveyard of the pacific.
It's a dangerous spot for sure! I know quite a bit about the area but that's because I have family there, so my whole childhood was spent driving next to the Columbia River 😂 the weather is beautiful, but hazardous at the same time! Cheers, friend!
I'll apologise in advance if this has been suggested before I've only recently subscribed, however you and Mike Brady from Ocean Liners Designs should do a collaboration, if thats ok, keep up the great work 😊

Come to think of it, this would actually make a good topic for a future Fast Fact Fridays. Shipwrecks that are accessible enough to visit.
