Great to meet you all! Thanks again Bob for creating this amazing piece of kit, it's definitely going to come in handy. I appreciate you!
It was so great to get to hang out and shoot some video together, FINALLY! Thanks for everything Pat, we'll see you again soon 👍🏼
Had you thought about using chassis connectors instead of having the cables coiled up? I've built a few streaming flight cases and use Neutrik connectors on the outside, that way the internal cables can be hidden away and stops them getting damaged, as you're only plugging in and out of the side of the box.
Yeah I would use chassis mount sockets myself. Maybe Pat requested not to do it that way to cut down on setup time, and to avoid losing cables? I know someone might borrow a cable, and next thing I know I’m left with 3/4 xlr cables lol
This is the way. Or use a a DB25 fan out so you only need to plug in one connector to the side of the unit…
To quickly identify cables in a rig like this, I’ve used small colored zips effectively…
I was wondering how you were going to pull up on that walnut, to release the catch, without snapping that thin walnut. The leather tab sharing a rivet with the catch itself was brilliant. What a simple, and 100% effective solution.
Literally when I saw that I said to myself “Damn that’s smart.”
Lol.
Literally brilliant.
I love how the build started with the Rodecaster Pro and ended with the Pro 2 inside the box
Bob! You are the reaosn I found SPI, and Pat, back when you were on epsosde???. And now to see him on your channel and he is partially why I have my own business today! Fantastic man!
When Bob squeezed the foam with the squeaky sound effect added, my dog perked up, lifted his head, raised his ears, and did that head tilt thing.
That sound effect must have been created with a dog toy. 🐕🧸😅
After the third time I rewound it for the laughs he had to get up and go check the TV area for any wayward toys! 😅
I'm such a sucker for box builds like this! Anything music/gig related looks so damn cool. Thanks for another great video!
This thing is incredible!
As a podcast who travels frequently to events, I really want one of these! 👏🏻
Great idea. I love the idea of a portable studio
Glad you like it!
lol 16:42 "damn, i wish i thought of that"
sick build btw
I like the battery LED in the box as he opens it 😂 that’s some movie magic lolol
10:40 That drill extension looks handy. Don't think I've ever seen one of those before!
Much more elaborate ones are needed sometimes in automotive work
Ever since you made the Clamp Champ Clamp I’ve been waiting for a moment like this to see you use it.
The moment FINALLY arrives and you DIDN’T USE IT?!?!?!?
I nearly screamed and cried 😭😫😭😫😭
Awesome video! I watched Pat's tutorials to start my own podcast, and I love ILTMS, perfect combo!
Box question: Would it have been easier to make a normal box the size you want, and then cut it into two halves at the angle you want? Looks like making two sides made it difficult to match up perfectly.
A lot of boxes are made exactly that way. I’m not sure about any advantage this way provides that building whole and cutting does not.
Apperently it should be. Check out Adam Savage box building at Tested :)
if it was a straight 90 or 45 cut i could see that as not an issue but judging by the angle of that box matching it up exactly on both sides once it was all closed in is potential for misalignment. it's possible but I would still cut my side walls and assemble after that to ensure it would open/close without being janky.
Yes, doing it that way would be far easier, but there's no real advantage as far as strength of construction either way. It would be a bit more math potentially because you have to line up your blade angle to the angle of the sides, but it's a minor trade off at worst
What?! A great Collab. Love it.
i made an effects pedal box for guitar pedal with all these exact same things a few years back. only difference was that i has a built in port to run the cables out of the box (to connect power and to the amp) and i did the inside with a fuzzy type liner, so that i only had to put velcro on whatever i put in there and it stuck to the inside. same latches, corners, hinges, handles, covering, it brought back memories.
Glad this collaboration finally happened! Great video & cool project.
Very cool. and noticed the RODEcaster Pro 2 in the final unboxing!🔥
Great bit of kit. My only question is why not use a magnet instead of the clasp for the walnut lid?
If i had to guess it would be the age old logic of " Because I had it ". Could also be not wanting to put magnets near the microphones or electronics or easier install than mounting magnets. But I'm sure it was just a "because we wanted to" I doubt there is a specific reason for it
While I was watching I had the same thought, but then I figured that if the case was jostled enough, it might undo a magnet. And I'm sure they wouldn't want anything to come loose while travelling!
Beautiful work.
Cool build. One option to consider is just putting the 4 XLR connections on the outside of the box with a nice cover. Pat's comment about the power bank is a pretty cool idea, it would be neat to see a small power system (Jackery 240/290??) repackaged to fit in the box and provide power.
This guy is wrapping is a wood box in semi rigid material and I cant even wrap christmas gifts. I make a shoe box look like a basketball. Amazing project and explaination ILTMS as always. Keep up the great work.
What an epic video! It has echoes of Back to the Future, some Wilhelm Scream and "Q" introducing James Bond to a new gadget scene. And a strong return of Clamp Champ! Love the Easter Egg sticker under the Rodecaster. Masterfully done!
I LOVE THIS!!! Great idea, awesome execution!
Needs a specific slot for Pokemon card pack storage.
Haha. Fact.
Yes, very much yes.
Soooo cool! Trying to figure out a good light mobile podcast setup
That little "clamp war" was just absofrigginlutely hilarious!😂😂😂
I loved the idea! I'm making my own podcast with some friends, and this is a great way to take the studio anywhre. I'd just need to know a bit more about the recording hardware used here.
Oh, and only one complain: not enough clamps! :P
Nice. Be cool to see how far you can take this idea and still have functionality.
This is so cool - again. Maybe it would cool with rolls for traveling. Really great job. Thanks for sharing.
I loved this build Bob! I almost didn’t watch it b/c I’m not interested in podcasting but the techniques you showed are super transferable to many projects.
Very nice and very clean design guys. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friends keep making. God bless.
As a musician, sometimes I would love to record a jam session….THIS would be the sweetest piece of equipment to have! Great job and great idea!
I watch this channel and my 9 year old loves Pats channel. Funny to see you both on the same channel. Small world.
Awesome build!
Amazing build
I must say that's a lovely custom case. At the same time I was wondering about two of your choices.
Why such thick and heavy wood if the case is ment for traveling? And why didn't you use recessed latches and handle hardware on the outside?
Also I would paint the wood black before attaching the Tolex in case it gets cut or torn during transportation.
All probably a time and budget based choice... Love your channel, keep up the good work!
Excellent! I love this.👍🏼
That rack of tubs in the back of your shop with orange tape could be a fun build 👀 maybe them on tracks and a cataloging system? Just spitballin.
Such a cool project and great implementation! It looks really professional! Great job!
I've built a similar pedalboard for my gigs (with compartments and hidden cables) long time ago, but this gave me an idea to build a new one with more cool features 😁 (And I can store more cables)
an upgrade to consider, they make sd card extenders/relocators that have a stub to plug into the card slot, a ribbon cable, and a new sd card cube. one of those could be put in an easily accessable location so you dont have to find the slot in the small space in the back.
Fantastic, Bob! Really amazing work! 😃
I know audio doesn't work like that, you still need a quiet place to record... But imagine if it was possible to use something like that on a bar table with friends! 😂
(I thought about this because when I lived in Sao Paulo I used to meet friends at an specific bar once a month, always on Saturdays! And it was great, many of them had RUclips channels - in Portuguese, of course - and so on!)
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
BTW, I really miss those meetings!
I really like this, but I would want to change 2 things on this build. 1. the mixer/recorder is recessed into the box - I would want the box to be no higher than the edge of the board so I can ergonomically keep my hands on the faders and not feel like i'm bumping the box near the bottom. (it would drive me nuts). this *could* be accomplished by simply adding spacers to the bottom of the recorder with the current implementation to bring the surface of the recorder's control panel flush with the top of the box. 2. as Pat was saying, the recorder can be operated with full portability, I would want to dedicate an area of the box to at least 2 100wh capacity (the legal limit for flying on an airplane) lithium ion usb battery banks (so you can have a field backup). this would allow this rig to record anywhere unhindered by power concerns. I would suggest securing these power banks with some removable velcro (I personally favor 3m command picture hanging strips for most electronics because they are thin, strong, but easily removable from the device without residue but also really easy to mount and unmount (i have giant white boards hung on my wall with them, they are fantastic)
nice work looks great..
Hi, Pat! Looking forward to checking out your content!
nice work bob keep it up
Clamp champ competition was awesome
Great work!!!!!!
Wow love it
That hoverboard is so 2015 lol.
Love the idea of a portable studio, in my case more for music production than podcasting so a little more hardware to fit in one box but anything is doable.
You should do this with the rodecaster duo which is a mini broadcaster two pretty much and you could make a pretty small setup
So awesome to have talent like that.
Nice craftsmanship. However, it seems a bit big. Does it fit within airline carry on specs?
This looks great! I got excited when you were installing the hardware - nice little touches that felt like icing on the cake. I need to see how I can incorporate tolex into some of my next projects too :)
The “Clamp Champ” battle made me audibly lol
Now we got something useful here.
This is exactly what I'm wanting to start.
Round Table podcast
Amazing work on it, good job
sadly you guys put the velcro on backwards. if the soft side was on the rodecaster it could be removed and sat on a table without scratching what it's sitting on. Love the catch choices and the use of the walnut and leather.
One could say that 11:05 was a...Clampsclation of force. I'll see myself out.
Interesting technique. I usually see the full box made, then cut in half after, but I’m sure that would be a tougher cut in this… case.
Nice translation present time to past! 🤣🤣🤣
Love it! Would be cool wrapped in leather 😃
hi Bob could you tell the make of Heavy Duty Velcro you used please love the show
I imagine we can further reduce weight, at least internally, by using foam core aluminium panels for the internals? I was thinking that for the exterior case, but it probably needs the plywood for durability
Pat was super excited to use his Back to the Future stuff, I bet.
100% 😅
Yoooo it’s Deep Pocket Monster! I never knew he had a podcast!
I liked the back to the future references
Wow, you rented a van to drive that all the way to CA? Dedication. :) Thanks for another great video.
😄😉
Ok read the comments and haven’t seen this. For working with audio (mixing, scrubbing through recordings, clipping, tagging, sorting and cataloging) what are some of the best solutions. It seems there are many good options for video but not so much for audio. I would appreciate any suggestions.
Dark - love ur videoes
I think you should attach a brand sticker or something like an identification
quick question: a laser cut wouldn't get a better finish on that foam?
Hello iltms I have a question can you also let us see how to make a transport box for your own 1/14 truck brand Scania for transporting it ????
Hi great video. I can't find the wrap around you used ( collax) I think you said it was. Hope you might be able to point me in the right direction.
it’s called tolex. that will help.
Will the plans for this be made available? I so need this for my “office studio”
Wait... is that CNC-3PO? I love it 🤣
😉
You should make the blind surfer one of these since he is a voice actor and needs a sound proof box
Best way to make a box like that is to make one big box (six sides) and then cut it where you want it to split. Perfect match.
That is so cool
tell me you have a unhealthy addiction with clamps without telling me
ILTMS : 11:17
Quite curious why not use a magnet instead of the latch?
Welcome to California!! Bob, have you met Laura? Seems, like just an amazing gal, very creative like you!!
I have and she is great!!
Sick
Thanks!
All of your vids are amazing
What was the purpose of the grooves cut on the inside of the side panels?
what would be cool (practical...not sure) would be having all 4 mic cables inside on a self retracting spool thing (like a measuring tape), that you can pull out of a little door on the side or something
Clamp King had me laughing
What are those hinges called? @12:15
Which foam did you use?
Anyone know where to find adjustable 90 degree XLR cables, I need some for my podcast setup 13:59
I did not know that Pat did podcasts about business lol, I just know him from Deep Pocket Monster!
The Rodecaster Pro turned into a Rodecaster Pro II! Plot twist I didn’t see coming!!
Always watching at 2x
What kind of CA glue was that? It looked black and usually it’s clear.
That was a Starbond CA glue but if you were doing the same thing E6000 would probably hold better in the long run.
Probably the Loctite one, which is reinforced with black rubber. Designed for glueing things like rubber seals and mats together. I use it to make drive belts out of stretched ones, till the right one comes in, though it does normally last a long time.
Just curious, would anyone else want like a slot or place to put the wood backer thingy in the case?
How come you didn't make the microphones swing out from the case. It would have been so cool if yould have just unfolded the case, flipped out the mics and staeted podcasting.
Curious as to the reasoning it took 2 years? Just other projects?
