Just like Brokers can red flag and ruin a carrier's reputation.. carriers should be able to red flag bad brokers also..IE when they contract 2 trucks for same load...lie about PU or DEL times..Refuse to pay detention or layovers...fine carriers for being late when they not( have u ever arrived 40 minutes early to shipper but the check in line is extremely long and the check in clerk goes out for a 15 minute smoke break??? Then they take their sweet time and mark u down as late!!) I'm so tired of the abuse and the extraordinary amount of unqualified drivers.before we where making $3,000 -$5,000 take home weekly but now we lucky bringing in $2,000...all these non English speaking drivers need to go!! Not only that but Mexican and Canadian drivers who are running intrastate loads when it's illegal to do so. By law they are only allowed to run directly in and directly back out but often times they run loads within the US and get away with it.

This does change a lot because this leaves an opening for suing the brokers for conflict of interest if they don’t sign you on when you request the paperwork, free money people go sign up for everybody that doesn’t hire you if you request the paperwork . Then sue sue sue . Everybody keep in mind is all about paperwork and paper trails. Keep the application email requesting the documents and when they tell you that you can’t have them make sure you get an email.
Real states are not responsable of anything other than the sell of the property, brokers are direct responsables of paying the customer of load goes lost or stolen, also sometimes brokers also do 3pl for the customers, like warehousing, carrier interchange, they move freight from Mexico - USA - Canada, and 3 different nationality carriers are involved in the same load. The broker has a lot of skin in the game. A realtor makes the sale take their check in the spot and leaves with no liability. Also customers pay 30 - 120 average. They have to take the hit of the cash flow and customers also run away, and by that time carriers been paid long time ago. Brokers do big time more that real state, the biggest issue is that the big ones are always keeping us divided, making the small ones think that divide is better. Become friend of your good brokers and learn.

As we study the load boards and given the past experiences with brokers we know who to run for and not. We know who the highest paying brokers are and those are the brokers we work with. We always no matter how often we run with them read each rate confirmation for our protection before booking. We build on those businesses relationship which ensures consistency.
So what I see as the only road to action. A band of truckers form a freight brokerage and agree to a percentage of profit of the brokerage and guarantee fair profit sharing and provide documents regardless if requested or not as part of the rate contract paper work.
@truckingmadesuccessful I’m willing to get something started to turn things around if I can get a few savy individual that can bring the know how on the broker side and bring in some dispatchers on a contractual basis to funnel load to and a commitment from a large carrier customer base to execute what I suggested and get these other brokerages out of business simply by providing a better customer service experience… too easy.

Thank you for explaining this. Few of us have the time to investigate these important issues. Not sure of the value of disclosure if you can be coerced through financial pressure to avoid seeking the disclosed information. So the broker can say, 'the government might require us to do this upon request, but if you make it an issue you will be punished'.. So if carriers are coerced from getting this information, who else would get it? Certainly motivated to provide some feedback to the FMCA.
Being an Independent OP I do get many of the comments asking for transparency, having said that, the US is a Capitalist nation and the government has no business in telling private companies how much they should charge for their services. Imagine that one day the government says that trucking companies can’t charge over 2.50/mile, we wouldn’t see that fair either. If what is being offered doesn’t suit your needs, don’t take it and move on.
Agreed on over regulation on us, and very little on everyone else in this industry. What I’d like to see is consist rate’s across all lanes. If a truck is needed then the cost has a flats rate of, say $4.00 per mile. Plus detention starts as soon as you’re on sight and checked in! Americold charges $250.00 if you 15 minutes late, but doesn’t give to sh^ts if they take 8 hours to unload or load you. Then the Brokers hardly ever pay detention. And yes the Brokers can blacklist your carrier or worse make up some B.S. to report to carrier411 and alike. Transparency you can keep it, accountability is what I want. Fair margins for their service and truthfulness, while we assume all the liability and equipment expenses.
Worried about the wrong stuff. We don’t care about what the next man is getting paid. We need to lower IFTA taxes and get rid of toll booths on the interstate!!

I have 3 years experience, no accidents and currently drive for ats. I do flatbed and this is my second job. I've been with them for 2 and a half years. Problem is that I only made 70 grand this year. The company is great but my pay kinda sucks for only being home 3 days a month. Anyone know a flatbed company where I could do better?

So, if they don't remove the "language" from the carrier setup packages - basically this change does nothing. If they do remove it, but you as a carrier have to request the documents for it - eventually you will be put on DNU list for that particular broker(and wouldn't be surprised to be reported to carrier411 because why not) The only way this works is if they make it obligatory that the broker sends it without carriers asking for it - by the looks of it that is not going to happen. Not saying this is the case, but if you found out brokers were giving carriers “half” of what shippers were paying, you’d probably be pretty upset. There is too much mystery and small carriers want to know how much brokers are making being the carrier does the high percentage of the work. It goes back to CEO’s shouldn’t be making 10,000 times what the janitor is making. The guy breaking his back shouldn’t have to scrape by while a select few have 1,000+ times more than he could ever need. I’m all for capitalism, but not crony capitalism of an elite class and a slave class.
The CEO generates the business so a company can make money. The better he is the more he is worth. Pay everyone the same, and the company will go broke.
@ You are correct, I do not want major redistribution of wealth, but there is no moral or logical reason for him to make 10+ million a year while 95% of the rest of the company makes $50K a year or less. He can make 1-5 million and the other employees have a better quality of life at $100K a year. Once it gets bad enough that enough people have nothing left to lose, the mega rich will lose everything. There must be balance. If you look at salaries 40-50 years ago, you will see we have heavily tilted the scale to a thin middle class and a very, very large class of poor. People will revolt. Politically or physically. Apparently brokers are scary because truckers and companies are afraid to stand up. I’m only a company driver but what everyone fails to realize is that the brokers are the ones making money for sitting at a desk answering phones. The companies are being cheated out of money so drivers get paid less. I totally understand drivers need to support their families but if we don’t take a stand this will never change. I also know that with so many foreigners out here driving for pennies and washing their feet in the sink and living in a truck so they have no bills makes it difficult. After deregulation under federal law shipping rates are to be disclosed on shipper letter head. Never accept a load that doesn't provide this. I've been with the same company for 20 years all my loads are provided this unless I broker a load.
I will also have the mega carriers not handling loads at all unless there is a contract with the shipper and if they cannot double broke their loads out to the spot market
All of it is big BS until brokers are not limited on 10-15 % of the load price. Transparency is necessary in the order to control their take, but me as you say could not care less We talking here about fare business. Up your model go direct to the Shipper. I have and continued to use brokers. My strength was taking advantage when either were on critical then i would politely take them to the cleaners. Smiling aall the way to the bank. I've never honored the "no compete" clause.
Spot market carrier don’t even read carrier agreement when onboarding. The timing is so limited when you’re trying to book a load and there’s another 100 carriers waiting to snatch that load from you…so, you BLAZE through the onboarding process and you sign it just to book that load.
Obviously since the topic of transparency of brokers makes the brokers nervous or uncomfortable means that there is something obscure happening. There is a broker on RUclips who teaches people skills to become a broker and he goes on stating that brokers should keep as much as possible from the load and it does not matter how bad you screw the carrier. As a carrier I do not agree with what this whole broker transparency push. We should be wary of government overreach at all times, this is a blatant example of such. We don't ask Walmart to provide us with how much they make when we go pick up bread from their shelves, however; if we did want to know their general profits we can check the company's prospectus. Carriers simply must know their operating costs then negotiate around that. The simple answer that everyone usually yells is " stop taking cheap freight," however; there will always be a market for cheap freight because someone can run a 2003 Volvo for .20 cents/mile and make a profit. Again, simply know your costs and operate around that, the market will take care of the rest.
The fmcsa is apparently being paid by brokers. I don’t understand how carriers/ contractors are being completely over looked in this industry I also don’t understand how shippers/receivers aren’t stepping in to help the biggest piece of this industry’s puzzle.
I need to know. These brokers fight you tooth and nail then swear all they have in this load is X amount and can only pay 1.50 per mile but they charged 3.10 per mile. Yes you can just refuse the load and move on. These brokers want to take half the pay if not more. I don’t haul loads just to pay for fuel and this is what these brokers throw at the drivers. They only way things will change is when drivers start refusing these scraps but that won’t happen
She's absolutely right that carriers should be concerned with making the profit they need for each load. It should not matter in the least what the broker's profit is. If the load offered pays you what you need take it. If it doesnt dont take it. Simple. If you dont like working with brokers invest yourself in Salespeople, facilities, back office and operational personnel to take care of what shippers want and need.

Have shared Liability Insurance between Brokers and Carriers. They most certainly claim its their load you are hauling. Since it would be a shared Liability you would carry a lesser Liability Insurance and thus save money every year. Insurance is what's killing mist Carriers.
This issue is most US🎉 Carriers don't understand what Brokers do and that's why transparency is hard to disclose. Cause Brokers and dispatcher are not the same. So the issue becomes more complex.
The simplest thing that can happen is limit the amount a broker can keep! First thing is a dispatcher should get more money than any broker cause they do more to put that load on my trailer than a broker does! My dispatcher get 6% and that's what a broker should be gettin even less like 5%!
I don’t think it’s anyone’s business ever how much someone makes or how much profit they’ve made. We don’t do that for any other industry. I don’t think that’s the problem with brokers, although they are making an exorbitant amount of money and too much money, especially in the case where the trucking company or driver is making not enough to cover basic expenses it doesn’t make sense that they would be getting paid an exorbitant amount of money. If we can’t make money, they shouldn’t be able to make money either and they should increase the price to where we can make a profit.
Finally at least something something is better than nothing it is not okay for broker to know how much is Carrier making and for Carrier to do not know how much is broker making. Broker already threat in their packets to block carrier and go after them if they solicit their customer so what's the problem then ???

Yeah broker's don't deserve more than 25% of what a shipper pays to move frieght. I would prefer the fmcsa construct a platform agency for shippers to go to that would remove the need for a broker
Bottom line the should have a standard fee like realtors. Also required pay all their debt to carriers before closing the business. Every year i get a charge back because a broker ran off without paying. Im convinced some brokers are slim of a human being. That doesn’t belong in trucking.

I remember I did a load from LA to Vegas. I got the load for $1600 the broker told me that was all he had in the load. He accidently sent me the real price this load was paying and it was $ 3000. They ripping off the carriers.
Also no one has realized that the past 2 years a lot of brokers went out of business also, why if they are making all the money. Maybe the problem is carriers that take the loads too cheap and customers take advantage of the whole situation. Hundreds of customers are also investing in AI and they go by supply and demand. They don’t care about brokers or carriers making money.
Here is opportunity ladies and gentleman with our new administration. This document can easily be used to explain what carriers really want. I believe this administration wants to correct this problem for hard working carriers.

That s not how the market works. A broker cannot take consistently big commissions on his loads, . That ll open the door for other brokers to come in, quote the shipper cheaper, take the load and sell it while still being profitable and make the shipper happier. There is enough broker competition, there s no monopoly or barriers of entry for new players. What you re describing is not a realistic scenario.

The only way left to get transparency it for ALL CARRIERS to refuse to haul loads for specific brokers who choose to dish out retribution to those carriers who ask for these documents. Put enough out of business, and others will come in line. The reality is, there will always be enough carriers who will do business with these brokers, and there will never be the desired outcome. So long as we surrender these rights, they will always be abused!

I started in 96’, trust me they don’t care about you or me. It’s all about risks, although I don’t care anymore at this point in my career a broker can ruin you for the remaining days, weeks or months you want to stay in business.

We carriers are humiliated and bullied by literally everyone in this shitty industry. The carriers has no balls, as long as we just write here messages and comments and show our frustration around the corner in quiet - we are pussy. We need to stand and do something about it, prostest, strike etc.
Look how ports get their problems fixed - they strike, they have balls and you can't say otherwise. We just talk a lot and we do nothing about it, we cry like babies.

This does change a lot because this leaves an opening for suing the brokers for conflict of interest if they don’t sign you on when you request the paperwork, free money people go sign up for everybody that doesn’t hire you if you request the paperwork . Then sue sue sue . Everybody keep in mind is all about paperwork and paper trails. Keep the application email requesting the documents and when they tell you that you can’t have them make sure you get an email.

O brokers should be capped at 10 percent. Freight brokers have nothing to do with grocery stores. What kind of question is that?
Real states are not responsable of anything other than the sell of the property, brokers are direct responsables of paying the customer of load goes lost or stolen, also sometimes brokers also do 3pl for the customers, like warehousing, carrier interchange, they move freight from Mexico - USA - Canada, and 3 different nationality carriers are involved in the same load. The broker has a lot of skin in the game. A realtor makes the sale take their check in the spot and leaves with no liability. Also customers pay 30 - 120 average. They have to take the hit of the cash flow and customers also run away, and by that time carriers been paid long time ago. Brokers do big time more that real state, the biggest issue is that the big ones are always keeping us divided, making the small ones think that divide is better. Become friend of your good brokers and learn.

It's not benefitting the shippers,drivers,or the safety of the public sharing the roads with trucks that are running on minimal maintenance.
Greed isn't good for anyone or the nation.
As we study the load boards and given the past experiences with brokers we know who to run for and not. We know who the highest paying brokers are and those are the brokers we work with. We always no matter how often we run with them read each rate confirmation for our protection before booking. We build on those businesses relationship which ensures consistency.
So what I see as the only road to action. A band of truckers form a freight brokerage and agree to a percentage of profit of the brokerage and guarantee fair profit sharing and provide documents regardless if requested or not as part of the rate contract paper work.
@truckingmadesuccessful I’m willing to get something started to turn things around if I can get a few savy individual that can bring the know how on the broker side and bring in some dispatchers on a contractual basis to funnel load to and a commitment from a large carrier customer base to execute what I suggested and get these other brokerages out of business simply by providing a better customer service experience… too easy.

Thank you for explaining this. Few of us have the time to investigate these important issues. Not sure of the value of disclosure if you can be coerced through financial pressure to avoid seeking the disclosed information. So the broker can say, 'the government might require us to do this upon request, but if you make it an issue you will be punished'.. So if carriers are coerced from getting this information, who else would get it? Certainly motivated to provide some feedback to the FMCA.

Being an Independent OP I do get many of the comments asking for transparency, having said that, the US is a Capitalist nation and the government has no business in telling private companies how much they should charge for their services. Imagine that one day the government says that trucking companies can’t charge over 2.50/mile, we wouldn’t see that fair either. If what is being offered doesn’t suit your needs, don’t take it and move on.
Agreed on over regulation on us, and very little on everyone else in this industry. What I’d like to see is consist rate’s across all lanes. If a truck is needed then the cost has a flats rate of, say $4.00 per mile. Plus detention starts as soon as you’re on sight and checked in! Americold charges $250.00 if you 15 minutes late, but doesn’t give to sh^ts if they take 8 hours to unload or load you. Then the Brokers hardly ever pay detention.
And yes the Brokers can blacklist your carrier or worse make up some B.S. to report to carrier411 and alike. Transparency you can keep it, accountability is what I want. Fair margins for their service and truthfulness, while we assume all the liability and equipment expenses.
Worried about the wrong stuff. We don’t care about what the next man is getting paid. We need to lower IFTA taxes and get rid of toll booths on the interstate!!
@VB26, I like your thinking. And I'll add: relax the hours of service and make if the driver is stopped and checked, as long as he passes the physical eye test he should be able to go. If he doesn't, place him out ion service for 8 hours. Let us give the country what it needs.

I have 3 years experience, no accidents and currently drive for ats. I do flatbed and this is my second job. I've been with them for 2 and a half years. Problem is that I only made 70 grand this year. The company is great but my pay kinda sucks for only being home 3 days a month. Anyone know a flatbed company where I could do better?

Transparency is not full disclosure
So, if they don't remove the "language" from the carrier setup packages - basically this change does nothing.
If they do remove it, but you as a carrier have to request the documents for it - eventually you will be put on DNU list for that particular broker(and wouldn't be surprised to be reported to carrier411 because why not)
The only way this works is if they make it obligatory that the broker sends it without carriers asking for it - by the looks of it that is not going to happen.

Not saying this is the case, but if you found out brokers were giving carriers “half” of what shippers were paying, you’d probably be pretty upset.
There is too much mystery and small carriers want to know how much brokers are making being the carrier does the high percentage of the work.
It goes back to CEO’s shouldn’t be making 10,000 times what the janitor is making.
The guy breaking his back shouldn’t have to scrape by while a select few have 1,000+ times more than he could ever need.

There must be balance. If you look at salaries 40-50 years ago, you will see we have heavily tilted the scale to a thin middle class and a very, very large class of poor.

Apparently brokers are scary because truckers and companies are afraid to stand up. I’m only a company driver but what everyone fails to realize is that the brokers are the ones making money for sitting at a desk answering phones. The companies are being cheated out of money so drivers get paid less. I totally understand drivers need to support their families but if we don’t take a stand this will never change. I also know that with so many foreigners out here driving for pennies and washing their feet in the sink and living in a truck so they have no bills makes it difficult. As I said I am a company driver but I have shut down several times when these were planned and nobody else did. What do we do?

After deregulation under federal law shipping rates are to be disclosed on shipper letter head. Never accept a load that doesn't provide this. I've been with the same company for 20 years all my loads are provided this unless I broker a load.
I will also have the mega carriers not handling loads at all unless there is a contract with the shipper and if they cannot double broke their loads out to the spot market
Carriers should make brokers sign a version of their own packet

Broker transparency would give better insights on the market in all lanes, which would give better negotiating power. Does DAT and Truckstop get the info on what brokers are getting paid? Probably not. Their market rates are an average of what rates are being posted on the board. I may be wrong, so please correct me
It’s should be automatic. If the fmcsa say you have to request the documents to get them then a broker has grounds to blackball you for requesting them on the grounds of “being difficult”.

Up your model go direct to the Shipper. I have and continued to use brokers. My strength was taking advantage when either were on critical then i would politely take them to the cleaners. Smiling aall the way to the bank. I've never honored the "no compete" clause.
Spot market carrier don’t even read carrier agreement when onboarding. The timing is so limited when you’re trying to book a load and there’s another 100 carriers waiting to snatch that load from you…so, you BLAZE through the onboarding process and you sign it just to book that load.

As a carrier I do not agree with what this whole broker transparency push. We should be wary of government overreach at all times, this is a blatant example of such. We don't ask Walmart to provide us with how much they make when we go pick up bread from their shelves, however; if we did want to know their general profits we can check the company's prospectus. Carriers simply must know their operating costs then negotiate around that. The simple answer that everyone usually yells is " stop taking cheap freight," however; there will always be a market for cheap freight because someone can run a 2003 Volvo for .20 cents/mile and make a profit. Again, simply know your costs and operate around that, the market will take care of the rest.

I need to know. These brokers fight you tooth and nail then swear all they have in this load is X amount and can only pay 1.50 per mile but they charged 3.10 per mile. Yes you can just refuse the load and move on. These brokers want to take half the pay if not more. I don’t haul loads just to pay for fuel and this is what these brokers throw at the drivers. They only way things will change is when drivers start refusing these scraps but that won’t happen
She's absolutely right that carriers should be concerned with making the profit they need for each load. It should not matter in the least what the broker's profit is. If the load offered pays you what you need take it. If it doesnt dont take it. Simple. If you dont like working with brokers invest yourself in Salespeople, facilities, back office and operational personnel to take care of what shippers want and need.

Have shared Liability Insurance between Brokers and Carriers. They most certainly claim its their load you are hauling. Since it would be a shared Liability you would carry a lesser Liability Insurance and thus save money every year.

This issue is most US🎉 Carriers don't understand what Brokers do and that's why transparency is hard to disclose. Cause Brokers and dispatcher are not the same. So the issue becomes more complex.
The simplest thing that can happen is limit the amount a broker can keep! First thing is a dispatcher should get more money than any broker cause they do more to put that load on my trailer than a broker does! My dispatcher get 6% and that's what a broker should be gettin even less like 5%!
I don’t think it’s anyone’s business ever how much someone makes or how much profit they’ve made. We don’t do that for any other industry. I don’t think that’s the problem with brokers, although they are making an exorbitant amount of money and too much money, especially in the case where the trucking company or driver is making not enough to cover basic expenses it doesn’t make sense that they would be getting paid an exorbitant amount of money. If we can’t make money, they shouldn’t be able to make money either and they should increase the price to where we can make a profit.
Finally at least something something is better than nothing it is not okay for broker to know how much is Carrier making and for Carrier to do not know how much is broker making. Broker already threat in their packets to block carrier and go after them if they solicit their customer so what's the problem then ???

Yeah broker's don't deserve more than 25% of what a shipper pays to move frieght. I would prefer the fmcsa construct a platform agency for shippers to go to that would remove the need for a broker
Bottom line the should have a standard fee like realtors. Also required pay all their debt to carriers before closing the business. Every year i get a charge back because a broker ran off without paying. Im convinced some brokers are slim of a human being. That doesn’t belong in trucking.

I remember I did a load from LA to Vegas. I got the load for $1600 the broker told me that was all he had in the load. He accidently sent me the real price this load was paying and it was $ 3000. They ripping off the carriers.
Also no one has realized that the past 2 years a lot of brokers went out of business also, why if they are making all the money. Maybe the problem is carriers that take the loads too cheap and customers take advantage of the whole situation. Hundreds of customers are also investing in AI and they go by supply and demand. They don’t care about brokers or carriers making money.
Here is opportunity ladies and gentleman with our new administration. This document can easily be used to explain what carriers really want. I believe this administration wants to correct this problem for hard working carriers.
