Lasers can cut some vinyl, but it has to be labeled 'laser safe' otherwise it omits toxic fumes. I don't have the tumbler attachment for the S1 but I do for other xTool lasers and it's the same process. It's easy to do and they come out great.
You could engrave from the front but you need to coat the mirror. Diode lasers don't do well with reflective surfaces. Use a marking spray or tempera paint to test.
Great question. When you add text each letter is separate, in cursive fonts like this one you want the ends of the letters to "weld" together so it cuts or engraves as one piece. It's more important in cutting but I make it a habit to do it with all words.
You can also back the mirror with colored paper to give a cool effect where engraved, gradients are possible too.

Yes you can, use the diode laser and play with the settings but you will get the same effect.
