David Seymour: School lunches and charter school ambitions | Q+A 2024

  • Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
  • Associate Education Minister David Seymour wants cheaper school lunches for students that need it. Q+A asks him how effective the revamped programme could be and whether he will give schools the support they need to deliver it.
Meanwhile, the first charter schools are expected to be up and running by Term 1 next year. Seymour says he's taking inspiration from England, where 80% of secondary schools are run under the academy programme, which has many similarities to New Zealand charter schools.
Join Jack Tame and the Q+A team and find the answers to the questions that matter. Made with the support of NZ on Air.

Why are schools the only institutions in the world where if your child is terrorized, attacked, beaten, labeled etc, parents are forced to place them in these abusive environments? An attack is called an "incident", and any other forms of abuse in schools are referred to as "bullying". Sickness isn't the only issue that causes absenteeism.

Great discussion David. I still value the importance for teachers to have a teachers only day as it was for those during my school days and as we know teachers may still be doing things at home and some weekends for their jobs and these children. More attendance is good, speaking to the youth police officers was awesome to hear, the option of some public schools to change into a charter school sounds appropriate, some children get sick more often and I can see a matter could be because of them going through puberty (they're having huge growth spurt a lot earlier). Some children are difficult for their parents. I believe times will change for the better. Ones have done well shutting down schools and adult education providers over these years that were poorly operating and having the Ministry of Development being able to refer beneficiaries onto these courses, monitoring all the schools is great 😊.

It is my opinion that Jack Tame was rude throughout this discussion and if the tables were turned and the very patient David Seymour had behaved the way Jack Tame did, he would have been chastised by the NZ public, no doubt led by our duplicitous NZ media.
It's is this combative demeanor, game playing and inability to let interviewees finish their points that has led me to stop watching the New Zealand news and now this Q&A RUclips thing.
This is the first and last thing I will watch on this channel, I was only here to see what David Seymour had to say and due to Tame's constant interruptions, I couldn't even do that.
There is a reason the Diary of a CEO hosted by Stephen Bartlett has over 7 million subscribers. It's because he listens and enables his interviewees to talk. It's a joyful, educational, deeply intimate experience, and it's 100 times better than this old-school, argumentative, 'hard hitting' journalistic BS.
Note to David - it would be great to see you chat with Stephen on his podcast - you'd definitely be allowed to finish your sentences there.

It’s good a journalist is corrected when they start pandering to perceptions. Objectively, there are genuine efforts to create a framework that addresses challenges here. Good.
Also, acknowledging the rights of parents was well done.
I think cooperation is important. Education is at a point of evolutions. Passing down knowledge through education is good, but also, creating environments in which the expressions, gifts and talents of these young souls can flourish.
As has been suggested elsewhere, schools could be growing gardens, cooking, making things etc, and learning subjects through these actions. Meditating together or sitting in silence. It is harmonising. Older cultures do it.
I think it’s understandable to a point, that children don’t want to go. Sitting at a desk all those hours. It’s literally a ‘concentration camp’.
I know many are already enriching classrooms and children’s lives. That’s wonderful and we build on that.
